00:00I saw the movie and at first I didn't realize it was you with the glasses and
00:04the mustache. How did the physical traits inform your portrayal of the character?
00:08You have to always credit wardrobe and makeup and hair because as they show you
00:14various pants and shirts and coats and stuff you start they help you discover
00:19the character and I knew I wanted to white out my hair and I grew my mustache
00:24bushy and I said it's got a lot of gray in it but white that out and it wasn't
00:29until I put on the glasses where I said oh my god I'm Geppetto. It was a shock but
00:34it was too late to go back and Tom Hanks already got that part so that ship has
00:39sailed. That's pretty impressive though that was your real mustache? Yeah yeah
00:44and and my real hair so I love when you look in the mirror and you don't see
00:51yourself anymore you see the character that's when you know you're getting
00:55close. It's such a hopeful and inspiring film and it's coming out at a time when
01:00it can sometimes feel like the world is actually ending. It's perfect timing
01:04because we're so divided there's such anger and division in this country and
01:10this film is it's positively therapeutic I think. I certainly felt so much better
01:19about everything after seeing it so I hope I hope the word of mouth is strong
01:23because like I say you can't really say well it's about this and describe it you
01:30know in a way you usually would. The movie first premiered at TIFF over nine or
01:36almost nine months ago how does it feel that people finally get to see it in
01:40theaters? Was it that long ago? Oh my gosh. Well that was a revelation because I'd
01:45never I'd seen it once at Mike's house and it was just my wife and me and Mike
01:50and to see it with a full audience was just astonishing they were with us from
01:55the get-go they laughed in all the right places there was scattered applause and
01:59when the lights came up at the end there were people with tears in their eyes it
02:04was really powerful because you never know how people are gonna perceive it I
02:08hope there's I think it's gonna have strong word of mouth fingers crossed. It's a
02:14tear-jerker do you would you suggest that people bring tissues and come
02:17prepared? Yeah well unexpectedly so I don't know that they're gonna use their
02:27sleeves. And Nick Offerman's voice-over plays such an important role in the film
02:32if you had to pick a celebrity to voice-over a movie about your life who
02:36would it be? Well Nick Offerman does such a great job I just saw him oh in the
02:43credits to the Oscars it said announcer Nick Offerman so he's working all the
02:48time and the voice-over community has been a godsend to me I love them all
02:54they're so comfortable in their own skin they're so talented there's no kind of
03:02there's not the kind of competition and rivalry and I'm just astonished at how
03:08talented they are because they come out of the world of stand-up and improv
03:13groundlings and Second City I've been in sessions that were I've laughed so hard I
03:19feel like I owe them a cover charge it's that entertaining. And you recently said
03:24that you're stepping away from the Star Wars universe you've had your time in it
03:28what went into making that decision? Well it's just natural I mean one era ended
03:34and a whole new era began in fact they've produced more original content since I
03:40finished then in all six films that I was in but and it's great stuff I mean I
03:47loved Rogue One and Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett my son said dad you gotta watch
03:54and or so that's on my to-do list
