'The Boys' star Karen Fukuhara talks to THR at San Diego Comic-Con and talks about the final season of the Prime Video show. Plus, she explains how the storylines made the characters more human in season 4.
Transcript
00:00So many of the characters face their past in this season. What was it like doing that for Kimiko?
00:05I love this season because every character, even the heroic ones that we've seen in the past,
00:12we get to see a darker side of them, and I think it just makes it a little more human.
00:18I mean, nobody's perfect, and we see that with Annie's character and how Firecracker confronts her,
00:27and it's kind of the same with Kimiko.
00:30I feel like we've only seen Kimiko as a victim of her environment and circumstances,
00:36and I just think that it gives her a lot more depth when we realize that she's had to face her shitty past as well,
00:47and her being a shitty person.
00:50Yeah, no, it was a dark season. It was a dark season, yeah.
00:54Yeah. The season ends with the boys in probably the worst place we've ever seen them in.
01:00What do you think or hope happens for Kimiko in season five?
01:04Ooh. I mean, I keep joking that she's going to be like this crazy blabbermouth chatterbox now that she can speak.
01:14She's going to be like, no, no, no, no, no, we should get this for dinner.
01:16But I don't know. I kind of am wary of her speaking a ton.
01:27I'm not sure. I don't know.
01:29I feel like the writers always have a better understanding of where the character should go,
01:36and so I don't want to say too much.
01:38But I think up to this point at least, it was really a special aspect of Kimiko,
01:45and she brought something new to the table, and it's kind of what makes her her.
01:51And so I don't want her to lose that identity,
01:54and I would miss that part of her if we decide to go in that direction, yeah.
02:01We got to see Kimiko and Frenchie finally get together, finally kiss.
02:05Do you ship them as a couple?
02:07Yes. Yes. I've been shipping them from day one.
02:10Hashtag kimchi forever.
02:13Anyway, yeah, no, I've been really into that idea of them being romantically together from the beginning,
02:20but I didn't want to say anything because, you know, in the comic books it's a little bit ambiguous,
02:25and they have an iconic moment at the end where they're facing each other,
02:30and he says, you know, it's always been you or something like that,
02:36and I just think that it's, like, such a heartwarming moment.
02:42We'll see. We'll see.
02:45We'll see where their journey goes.
02:47He is going to be trapped probably in the beginning of season five,
02:52so I'll go save him. I'll go save him.
02:54Yeah, I'll take him out. I'll take him out, and we'll go to Marseille together, whatever.
02:59I mean, girls get it done every time, so.
03:02Yeah, that's what we've all been saying.
03:04We were thinking about it.
03:05We have something called estrogen nights with all the girls.
03:09We just have, like, wine, and we stay in, and we order in food,
03:12and one of the days we were saying, oh, like, you know,
03:17it sounds like we're going to have to get the boy, like, we're going to have to go save them.
03:22And then we're like, wait a second. Girls get it done?
03:24So we'll see. We'll see.
03:26The show has grown in viewers every single season.
03:30What do you think it is about this show that not only keeps fans coming back,
03:33but also continues to draw in new viewers?
03:36Honestly, it's such a blessing.
03:38It is incredible that anyone pays attention to the work that you do,
03:43but our fans are fucking phenomenal.
03:47Can I curse on this? I don't know.
03:48But, like, they're phenomenal, and they're loyal,
03:51and not only do we have, you know, the original comic book fans that carried on to our show,
03:56but fans, like, the superhero fan base that decided that, you know,
04:02our chaotic show was something they could enjoy.
04:05I mean, I just can't express how much I'm grateful to have all of our viewers.
04:17We saw some of them in Hall H today, and they ride.
04:22They ride hard.
04:24And so I'm just very, very, very thankful for them.
