04:29Oh, yes, I'm going to help with the circus today, and I'm just practicing.
04:39Chuckles the Clown asked me.
04:41I'd really like to ride an elephant.
04:45That's for sure.
04:53Hello!
04:54Oh, you startled me.
04:56Excuse me.
04:57That's what clowns are for.
04:59Well, I just didn't see you back there.
05:01Well, here I am.
05:03And here I am, ready for the circus.
05:07That's what you think.
05:09What do you mean?
05:10You don't have your costume.
05:13Well, where is it?
05:14Right here.
05:16It isn't exactly what I had envisioned.
05:19Give it a try.
05:26Oh, you do it beautifully.
05:28I'd like to show this to Daniel.
05:30Why not?
05:41Oh, no.
05:42The biggest chicken in the world.
05:44Oh, Daniel, it's your friend, Lady Aberloom.
05:46Where are you?
05:48Inside this costume.
05:49Oh, why do I always get so scared of costumes?
05:54Well, it is a pretty big chicken.
05:57Oh, no.
05:58Now what?
06:00Oh, it's just Chuckles the Clown.
06:02Hi, Daniel Tiger.
06:04I'm the funny clown.
06:05Well, sometimes I don't think that clowns are so funny.
06:11Why not?
06:11It's when they surprise me and I don't know what's going to happen.
06:16But clowns never want to hurt anybody.
06:19They don't?
06:20Never.
06:21Well, it's good to know.
06:23I'll try to remember that.
06:25I guess I'm just not very brave.
06:28You're just fine, Daniel.
06:30Just fine exactly the way you are.
06:32And as long as you can tell people how you're feeling, you'll get along all right.
06:36Could you tell that to Nancy Caterpillar?
06:39Sure.
06:39Why?
06:40Because she hasn't become a butterfly yet and she's just about given up.
06:45Where's the sorry caterpillar?
06:47She's over that way.
06:49Come on, Lady A.
06:50Let's cheer her up.
06:51But don't scare her up, okay?
06:54Oh, my promises, promises.
06:57Okay.
06:57Hope you two have a good circus day.
07:00Thanks, Daniel, and thanks for being yourself.
07:03That's all I know how to be.
07:04And you do it so well.
07:06Ugga-mugga.
07:07Ugga-mugga to you.
07:13Nancy Caterpillar, I'd like you to meet Chuckles the Clown.
07:17Hello!
07:19Could you do that for me?
07:21You want to turn into a flower?
07:24No, I want to turn into a butterfly.
07:27But that's something you just grow into, Nancy.
07:30I know, I know, but I want to do it now.
07:35Hello there.
07:36Oh, hi, Daryl.
07:39Daryl Butterfly, I'd like you to meet Chuckles the Clown.
07:41Oh, pleased to meet you.
07:43Nancy really wants to be a butterfly like you, Daryl.
07:46Oh, so what else happens to be new?
07:49It's just so hard to wait.
07:52Why wait?
07:54What do you mean?
07:55Well, Nancy, did anybody ever tell you how nice you are just the way you are?
08:00I don't remember.
08:02Did anybody ever show you how good you look right now?
08:07I don't think so.
08:12Take a look.
08:15See your beautiful hair?
08:17And your dear little face?
08:19And that cute button nose.
08:21And your kindness.
08:23Oh, I never thought of it that way.
08:26I always just kept thinking how different I want to be.
08:30Well, Nancy, I, for one, think you are perfectly, absolutely, positively fine.
08:36Just the way you are.
08:39Just the way I am?
08:40Just exactly.
08:42I do too, Nancy.
08:44Just exactly?
08:45Just exactly.
08:47I must admit that I do too, Nancy.
08:50You're a real pal.
08:52Just the way I am?
08:55Just the way you are.
09:13Oh, thank you all for helping me.
09:17You did it, Nancy.
09:18But you all loved me just the way I was.
09:22And we love you just the way you are now, too.
09:25Yes, and I'm still Nancy.
09:29Come now, Nancy.
09:30We've got flying to do.
09:33Goodbye.
09:33Goodbye.
09:34See you down the road and up the sky.
09:43Come on.
09:44We've got circuses to play.
09:46Yes, she did it all herself, Trolley.
10:01That is the best kind, isn't it?
10:03So Nancy Caterpillar changed into a butterfly, right there with her friends who love her just the way she was and is.
10:26And she and Daryl flew off together.
10:30Do you ever wish that you could fly up in the air?
10:34There have been times I wished I could.
10:36But that's not what human beings grow up to do.
10:40Except in airplanes.
10:42We grow up to stand and walk on our own feet and learn to be able to love other people.
10:48And that's much better than flying any day.
10:53Well, it's time to go to the circus.
10:56Daniel was afraid of the big chicken costume and the clown.
11:00Let's see how we feel when we meet the different people and animals at the real circus.
11:06Come along.
11:07Well, this is the circus, and Betty told us to meet her over by the elephants.
11:26I think that's right over there.
11:28So let's just go see her now.
11:30So they named her Pee-wee.
11:34Hey, Betty.
11:35Hi, Fred.
11:36I didn't expect to see you clear up there.
11:38I didn't expect to be up here today.
11:40Fred Rogers, I'd like you to meet Fred Logan.
11:43Fred and Fred.
11:43I'm so glad to meet you, Fred.
11:45And this is Pee-wee.
11:47Hello, Pee-wee.
11:48Is it all right if I touch her?
11:51Oh, she feels like sandpaper.
11:53Yeah.
11:53I expected it to be smooth.
11:56You know, it's got those bristles.
11:58Bristles.
11:59Uh-huh.
12:00You take care of Pee-wee, do you?
12:02Yes.
12:02And all the elephants, Fred.
12:04Oh.
12:05Fred and his family take care of the elephants.
12:07And the elephants help take care of the circus.
12:10How do they do that?
12:12Uh, they pull the tent up, they pull the stakes, and also they perform in the big show.
12:18Well, I guess maybe we'll be seeing more of the elephants, won't we?
12:22How did you get up there?
12:23I'll show you.
12:24Fred, help me.
12:25And now, are you going to help me get down now?
12:28All right, down.
12:29Down Pee-wee.
12:30Hi, Pee-wee.
12:34Thank you, Pee-wee.
12:35This way.
12:36And then I just step down like a step.
12:40Now, that didn't hurt her, did it, for you to be up there?
12:43No, no.
12:45Do you have anything I could feed her?
12:49An apple.
12:50How did you...
12:51Thank you, Pee-wee.
12:52Put it right in her trunk.
12:54Oh, thank you.
12:54And she puts it in her mouth.
12:56You eat the whole thing right like that.
12:58All of us are vegetarians.
13:01There you are.
13:03Thank you, Pee-wee.
13:09We're going to see you later, right, Fred?
13:10You'll see me in the big show.
13:12You'll be able to recognize me.
13:13I'll have a bright blue coat on.
13:15Bright blue coat?
13:16Uh-huh.
13:16We'll look for you, Fred.
13:17All right.
13:17I want to show you something else before the circus begins.
13:19Glad to meet you.
13:20Yes, sir.
13:21Bye.
13:22Bye.
13:22Thanks.
13:23And this is Susie.
13:24Susie, Mr. Rogers.
13:26And Helen.
13:28Helen, this is Fred Rogers.
13:30How do you do, Helen?
13:32You're a fine creature you are.
13:34Where are we going?
13:35This way.
13:39Here's what I wanted you to see, Fred.
13:41The tigers?
13:42The tigers.
13:44Oh, how beautiful they are.
13:47So different from the elephants.
13:49They are.
13:51We can't go any closer, though, because the man who takes care of them put this up and told me that this is as close as we can get.
14:00Okay.
14:01They must not be tame tigers, huh?
14:04No, they're not tame.
14:07Well, they won't have to stay in there all the time, will they?
14:11No, they'll be part of the show soon.
14:12Oh, good.
14:13There's something else I wanted to show you.
14:15What is it?
14:15Come to the backyard.
14:17The backyard?
14:18Fred, this is the backyard.
14:25I don't understand.
14:27Well, the families and people who work at the circus need a place to live.
14:30And this is where they live, in these trailers, trucks.
14:34So these are all homes for families.
14:37They are.
14:38And then they move along to another town and set up their little village there.
14:42And so they have their own backyard.
14:45That's the backyard.
14:47Hey, Chela.
14:47Hi, Rana.
14:49They work here.
14:50Oh, they do.
14:51They're part of the family.
14:52Oh, hi, Jimmy.
14:53Oh, Betty.
14:54Good to see you again.
14:55I'd like you to meet Mr. Rogers, Fred Rogers, Jimmy James.
14:59How do you do, Fred?
15:00Welcome to the circus.
15:01Glad to meet you, Jimmy.
15:02You certainly are in a fancy costume.
15:05Fred, I'm the announcer.
15:07And I tell all the boys and girls exactly what is happening in all three rings.
15:11So we'll get to see you when we come inside, is that right?
15:14I'm on the way to today's performance.
15:15And I'll see you inside.
15:17Okay, doke.
15:17We'll listen for you.
15:19Fred, let's go to Clown Alley.
15:21Chuckles is waiting for us there.
15:23Oh, good.
15:23All right.
15:24This way.
15:28Hey, Mike.
15:29Hello, how are you?
15:30Hey, Jeff.
15:30Oh, hello.
15:31Dave, hi.
15:32Hello.
15:33Benny, Fred.
15:34Welcome to Clown Alley.
15:36So good to have you here.
15:37Thank you, Jeff.
15:38Just getting into my costume.
15:40I have to put my big tie on.
15:42Oh, it is a big tie.
15:44It's even bigger than it was in the picture.
15:46And here's my hair.
15:47I'm going to put that on.
15:48And here are my white gloves, you see.
15:50But first, Fred, I have to put on my makeup.
15:53Uh-huh.
15:54Because I'm going to look very different as Chuckles than I do as Jeff.
15:59So here's my makeup.
16:01Clown white.
16:02Clown white.
16:03Oh, it's the stickiest stuff.
16:05Oh.
16:06Oh, you're going to smear that all over your face like this.
16:09Does it smell?
16:10It has a bit of a smell.
16:12It has a bit of a smell.
16:12That's right.
16:12So I'm putting it all over my face.
16:17Now, I'm a white-faced clown, Fred.
16:20But there are other kinds of clowns that have red faces.
16:23And some of them have blue on their face.
16:25All different colors on their faces.
16:28And what about this color hair?
16:30Pink.
16:31Isn't that a festive pink?
16:33That's what I love about being a clown.
16:35You can just wear all kinds of wonderful colors and get paid for it, too.
16:39Isn't that wonderful?
16:40Mind if I do?
16:41Try it on, Fred.
16:43Oh.
16:44And with my nose.
16:45Ah!
16:48Now I have to powder my makeup like this so that it's not sticky any longer.
16:54All right.
16:55The show is almost ready to begin.
16:57You think you should get to your seats?
16:58Oh, maybe so.
17:00But I sure would like to see some of the other clowns here.
17:02Would you?
17:03Well, let me meet them.
17:03Let me take a photo of you all together.
17:06How about that?
17:07Let's get a photo.
17:07Come on, guys.
17:09Jay, Mike, Dave, come on.
17:10Let's get a photo with Mr. Rogers.
17:12Oh, thanks, Jay.
17:12This is beautiful.
17:13And you call this Clown Alley?
17:14This is Clown Alley.
17:16All the funsters are right here.
17:17Now, everyone get lined up.
17:19Come on, let's get into it.
17:19I'm a character here.
17:21Very good.
17:22Oh, Fred, that looks so...
17:23Ready?
17:25One, two, smile.
17:28Beautiful.
17:29Very good.
17:30Hope that turns out well.
17:31It should.
17:32We'll see you under the big top.
17:34Under the big top.
17:35Under the big top.
17:36Take care.
17:38See you at the circus, Fred.
17:40Which way do we go?
17:40Oh, that way.
17:41All right.
17:42Come along.
17:44See you, Charlotte.
17:45Let's get to it.
17:52Well, what about the ticket?
17:54Oh.
17:56There it is.
17:56Oh, thank you.
17:57Can you see all right?
18:12Oh, yes.
18:13There's so much to look at.
18:14I know.
18:15Oh, yeah.
18:16Oh, yeah.
18:17Oh, yeah.
18:17Oh, yeah.

18:45Directing your attention, high above Ring 3, introducing the first family of the year from Mexico, the celebrated Flying Guyona family.

20:15Watch now as Julio Gayona executes the legendary triple somersault.
20:45The Flying Gayona family!
20:55They wonder. Imagine how much they have to practice to be able to do that.
21:01I'll bet they practice every day.
21:04And the band. That band plays so well.
21:07Music is so important to the circus.
21:09Oh, sure.
21:10And all of them play different instruments, and yet they're all playing together to make one song.
21:16Music is so important to the circus.
21:21Music is so important to the circus.
21:23Music is so important to the circus.
21:25Music is so important to the circus.

21:39Music is so important to the circus.
21:40Music is so important to the circus.
22:41Oh, I love our jackets.
22:49The elephant act is next.
22:52Oh, well isn't that the one with Fred Logan?
22:55Mr. Logan said that he'd be wearing a bright blue jacket.
22:59Well, there he is.
23:00Oh, well, there he is.
23:30Oh, those elephants are great.
23:39Aren't they?
23:41Well, I think I've had enough.
23:43I don't think you have to see the whole circus every time you come.
23:47No.
23:47Sometimes just a little bit of the circus is just right.
23:50Well, this was just right for me.
23:52I'll get back to my place.
23:53Thank you, Betty.
23:54You're welcome, Fred.
23:55I'm glad you could come.
23:57Started out with the elephants with you on the elephant.
24:00I know.
24:00And then we get to see them here.
24:01What a day.
24:02It has been.
24:03See you later.
24:04Lookie doke.
24:04Bye.
24:05Oh, a lot of very enthusiastic people making a circus for all of us.
24:24Let's go back to my place.
24:25I like to show you things like that.
24:42If you ever go to a circus with your family and friends, maybe you'll think of some of
24:47the things we saw and heard today.
24:50Of course, circuses are different in different neighborhoods, but they all have adults who
24:56want to entertain children and their families.
24:59If the circus seems too long for you, or if there's something you don't like in it, you
25:05can ask your parents to take you out for a while and maybe come back if you want later.
25:12You see, people in the circus want people to have a good time.
25:15I'd just like you to see the keys on the piano here.
25:25Each key plays a different tone.
25:32Each white key plays a different tone.
25:36Each black key plays a different tone.
25:40Every one of them is a different tone.
25:42If all the keys and all the notes were the same, this is how the Good Feeling song would sound.
25:53It's such a good feeling to know you're alive.
25:57It's such a happy feeling.
25:59And that wouldn't be such a good feeling, would it?
26:03It's great that there are all different notes and different animals and different people in the world.
26:11But what's even greater is that we all can learn to play together and care for each other.
26:20All we have to do is want to.
26:23And wanting to is a really good feeling.
26:26It's such a good feeling to know you're alive.
26:31It's such a happy feeling.
26:34You're growing inside.
26:36And when you wake up, ready to say,
26:39I think I'll make a snappy new day.
26:43It's such a good feeling.
26:45It's such a good feeling.
26:46A very good feeling.
26:48The feeling you know that I'll be back when the day is new.
26:54And I'll have more ideas for you.
26:59And you'll have things you'll want to talk about.
27:03I will too.
27:09You always make each day and each week a special one.
27:14You know how.
27:15By just your being yourself.
27:18There's only one person in this whole world exactly like you.
27:22And that's you yourself.
27:24I say that often to you because it's very, very important that you know it.
27:30You are very special.
27:32And I'm very glad to be your television neighbor.
27:35I'll be back next time.
27:36Bye.
27:52Bye.

28:51The original production of this Mr. Rogers Neighborhood program was made possible by a grant from the Sears Roebuck Foundation.
29:21It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor. Would you be mine? Could you be mine?
29:35It's a neighborly day in this beauty wood, a neighborly day for a beauty. Would you be mine? Could you be mine?
29:43I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you. I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.
29:54So let's make the most of this beautiful day. Since we're together, we might as well say, would you be mine? Could you be mine? Won't you be my neighbor?
30:07Won't you please? Won't you please? Please won't you be my neighbor?
30:17Hi, television neighbor. We're together again. And I'm glad of that.
30:23I want you to see something. This is called a flexitone.
30:30It's an instrument that belongs to a friend of mine who has a whole collection of musical instruments.
30:40He likes music so much that whenever he sees a different kind of music maker, he gets it and he tries to learn how to play it.
30:49His name is Tom O'Horgan. I want you to meet him and to see his instruments. It's not quite time to go there yet, though.
30:59So we'll just think of something to do while we're waiting here. Maybe we'll just feed the fish.
31:08Let's think of something to do while we're waiting. While we're waiting for something new to do.
31:16Let's try to think up a song while we're waiting. That's liberating and will be true to you.
31:24Let's think of something to do while we're waiting. While we're waiting till something's through.
31:33You know it's really all right. In fact, it's downright quite bright.
31:39To think of something to do that's specific for you. Let's think of something to do while we're waiting.
31:48Were you glad that we thought of that, Fish? Mm-hmm.
31:56Well, I think it's time now to go to Mr. O'Horgan's place and see all of his instruments.
32:02His grandmother was a Native American. I wonder if she helped him to love music.
32:08Well, we'll just take the flexitone back to him and meet Tom O'Horgan. Come along.
32:16This is his apartment house. Let's just go on in.
32:34Hey, Tom. Hello, Fred. How are you?
32:46Fine. I'd like you to know my television neighbor.
32:48Welcome to my house. I see you brought back the little toy.
32:52Yes, well, it does seem like a toy to me.
32:54It's a musical instrument called the flexitone. It can place all kinds. Here's the base of the family.
32:59Can you hear the difference? It's a whole scale, see?
33:09Here, you play a duet.
33:14I like this. You're doing well.
33:19I want them to see your instrument. These are all musical instruments?
33:23Yes, from different parts of the world, and they're made from elements around their house, their backyard.
33:29For instance, this over here is a set of sticks from the Aboriginal people from Australia.
33:41They're used as rhythm sticks. Want to try it?
33:45Sounds like some birds. Yeah, I remember.
33:51And these here are seed pod instruments. Rattles. This is from the Caribbean islands.
33:58Wonderful percussion instruments.
34:01You mean those are just seeds in there?
34:03Mm-hmm. Right off a tree.
34:05And then this here is a...
34:08These are nut cases. That's these.
34:15Higher version.
34:16You mean these are just nuts?
34:18Mm-hmm.
34:19They're from Africa.
34:21And this is one which is really lovely.
34:23It's a...
34:25These are seed cases.
34:27That sounds so soft.
34:28Just like rain.
34:33And these are interesting.
34:35These are from the Amazon Indians. These are dancing instruments.
34:42Want to try it?
34:44I'll give you back the seed.
34:46All right.
34:47Let's see now.
34:51Oh, it just...
34:52It's just a coconut shell.
34:55So you can dance and make your own music at the same time.
35:00I should say.
35:02Is that the kind of thing that you play when you're happy?
35:04Well, I like these over here. These are wonderful little gongs.
35:10But it's just part of a whole series of gongs I have.
35:13Come on, let me show you.
35:14All right.
35:15Let's see.
35:16Let's go.
35:17Let's go.
35:18Oh, my.
35:21Oh, these gongs.
35:22Yes, they are all Indonesian and Chinese and Japanese.
35:26These are wonderful pitched gongs there.
35:29Yeah.
35:30Mm.
35:36The small ones are quite nice.
35:40Do you want to try?
35:49They sound beautiful.
35:57Each one has its own voice.
36:00It sure does.
36:01Now these things up in the ceiling here are quite interesting.
36:10These are Burmese bells.
36:17I love to listen to that.
36:21Tom, what was it that got you so interested in these things?
36:25Well, when I was in fourth grade, there was a teacher who came to our school.
36:28His name was Mr. Sheehan.
36:30And he sort of really guided my interest towards music.
36:33I was a singer.
36:35And I became very interested in musical instruments
36:38and playing together and singing together.
36:41It's been my life ever since.
36:43We've done this all over the world, found these things, haven't we?
36:46That's right.
36:47Would you like to play a duet?
36:48Sure.
36:49Okay, I'll play the bells over here.
36:51And you can play the ceiling instruments.
36:53All right.
36:54Okay?
36:55All right.
36:56I like that, playing together like that.
37:20That's fun.
37:20What is this big thing for?
37:24That's for hitting this great gong here.
37:25Give it a good stroke.
37:27All right.
37:27For Chinese gong.
37:36I like that.
37:37Yeah.
37:38Come on, let me show you some other of my things.
37:40All right.
37:44Here's a trumpet.
37:45It was homemade out of oil cans, cooking oil cans.
37:56Is that wonderful?
37:57Amazing.
37:58Oil cans for a trumpet.
38:00Right.
38:00And here is something I'd like you to play.
38:04If you hold it there, and then you bow it with this here,
38:08down towards the bottom.
38:09What a beautiful sound.
38:22What does sound inside?
38:23Water.
38:24Water.
38:25It's called a waterfall.
38:27The water gives it an echo effect that's very unusual.
38:32I'd like to play you another boat instrument over here,
38:34which I'm very, very close to because it's an Apache fiddle.
38:39And my grandmother was a Cherokee, so I feel close to it.
38:45Mm-hmm.
38:55Very gentle.
38:56It is.
39:03I think all of these instruments have the spirit of the people
39:05that made them and the people that played them.
39:07And each one, of course, has a voice of its own
39:11and speaks to me very, very directly.
39:14And that's why I have them all.
39:16I wish I could see them all and hear them all.
39:18Come on.
39:18But I need to be going.
39:20Well, you can come back sometime.
39:21I'd like to.
39:22Let me show you this last one thing.
39:24All right.
39:24This is a great gong from a temple gong from Japan.
39:29And it's also a friction instrument like this, too.
39:32Mm-hmm.
39:33And if you...
39:33When you rub it,
39:38it begins to make a great sound.
39:41Oh, it takes a moment for it to come up.
39:54Amazing.
39:55I feel it.
39:56Mm-hmm.
39:56Thank you, Tom.
40:10Thank you for coming.
40:11I really appreciate it having you.
40:12I appreciate your showing us this.
40:14You're a very special person.
40:16It's my pleasure.
40:16See you soon.
40:18Bye.
40:18I'll give you a gong to go.
40:20Come on.
40:30Let's just go to my place.
40:46Isn't it fun to find out things you never knew before?
40:50If you ask people,
40:52many of them will tell you and show you wonderful things.
40:56I really enjoy learning from my friends.
40:59Now it's time for make-believe.
41:04Trolley.
41:08Let's pretend that this is the time for the Bass Violin Festival.
41:13And people are coming from Westwood, Northwood, and Southwood.
41:18Let's pretend that it's just about to begin.
41:21We'll make-believe that Trolley is carrying a big bass violin.
41:26Ready, Trolley?
41:28Okay.
41:28Yes, Trolley, we're almost ready to begin.
41:47Oh, yes, it's a real nice one.
41:49Oh, it plays your music.
41:59Of course.
42:00Trolley, we're all ready for the festival.
42:03In fact, King Friday's waiting.
42:05But the people from Westwood haven't arrived yet.
42:09Yes, Mayor Maggie.
42:10And she's the one who suggested that we have the festival.
42:14In fact, so that all the neighborhoods could get together.
42:19Well, no, we haven't called her, as a matter of fact.
42:22Gee, thanks, Trolley.
42:23That's a terrific idea.
42:26I'll call her.
42:27Yeah.
42:27Uh, hello, Miss Polifica.
42:39Oh, no, not yet.
42:40We'll let you know.
42:41Would you please get me Westwood?
42:43I want to see whether Mayor Maggie has started out yet.
42:48Oh, hello, Mayor Maggie.
42:52Well, aren't you coming?
42:56What?
42:56Oh, we thought it was supposed to be here.
43:04Well, I'll see.
43:06You mean everyone else is there?
43:09From Southwood?
43:11And Northwood?
43:12Oh, well, I'll talk with Uncle Friday,
43:15and we'll come as soon as we can.
43:18Oh, yes, yes, he's playing,
43:20and we'll have some dancing and some other music.
43:25Oh, good.
43:25We'll come when we can.
43:29Well...
43:29What's going on?
43:31What about that?
43:32You mean the festival's going to be in Westwood?
43:34In Westwood?
43:35Oh, no.
43:35I'm glad we checked.
43:37Oh, well, you go talk to King Friday,
43:38and I'll go see who else wants to go.
43:40But what about the decorations?
43:42Oh, maybe we'll take along a couple of balloons.
43:44Okay, first things first.
43:45Right.
43:52Hello, trio.
43:54Hello.
43:54Lady.
43:55Averlyn.
43:55I need to talk with Uncle Friday.
43:58Here he comes.
44:00Miss Averlyn, I presume?
44:08Correct as usual, Uncle Friday.
44:09And when shall I begin to play my overture?
44:12As soon as we arrive in Westwood.
44:15Westwood?
44:16Why did you say that?
44:17Well, we've just found out that the festival is in Westwood.
44:19Not here?
44:21Uh, no.
44:23You see, everyone who's in it is already there.
44:25Everyone except us?
44:26How did this happen?
44:28I don't know, but I think the best thing for us to do
44:31is to go to Westwood right away.
44:32And think about reasons later.
44:34Exactly.
44:35Fanfare people, please play us to Westwood.
44:39So, Mayor Maggie has just talked with Make-Believe,
44:58and their participants are on their way.
45:00Oh, wow.
45:00That's so awesome.
45:01That's exciting, huh?
45:01I didn't know what happened.
45:02While we're waiting, Betty Bass Violet from Southwood
45:05has offered to sing us a flower song.
45:07Please.
45:08Wow.
45:08Miss Violet.
45:09What has such grace as a base Violet?
45:14A base Violet is like a lace Violet.
45:19What has a face like a base Violet?
45:23A base Violet can hold the ace Tete-a-tete.
45:27Who keeps the pace while all others are racing
45:32The flowers of life wave and bend, bend and wave.
45:36But ask who thins the space while others are racing.
45:43The face Violet wins this race.
45:48What has such grace as a base Violet, a base Violet is like a lace Violet.
45:58What has a face like a base Violet?
46:02A base Violet can keep the pace that is set.
46:08Oh, terrific.
46:09Oh, that was very nice.
46:10Oh, that was very nice.
46:11Very nice.
46:12We're in festival friends.
46:13I see our neighbors from the neighborhood of Make Believe arriving.
46:16Let's give them a hearty welcome.
46:17Hello, Mayor Maggie.
46:18Hello, Mayor Maggie.
46:19We're sorry to be late.
46:20Hello, Mayor Maggie.
46:21There was a mix-up, but we will not dwell on that.
46:29We have brought balloons and great talent.
46:31Well, then let's begin.
46:32Yes, let's begin.
46:33Yes, let's begin.
46:34Yes, let's begin.
46:38Hi, welcome everyone.
46:41Good to see you.
46:42Good to see you.
46:44The King's Bass.
46:45Very nice.
46:46Thank you, Mr. David.
46:48Yes, thank you.
46:49Ladies and gentlemen, the Bass Violin Festival shall begin.
46:54Our overture will be played by our bass violin player, His Majesty King Friday the 13th.
47:01Who is always so generous with his musical talent.
47:05Who is always so generous with his musical talent.
47:08Yes, I'm prepared now.
47:10Oh, thank you.
47:12Yes, thank you.
47:24Yes, there you have it.
47:31What more needs to be said.
47:38Thank you, King Friday.
47:39A superb beginning.
47:41And now from Northwood, Old Goat will recite his poem about the bass violin.
47:46Mama.
47:48Well, he says he needs someone to play some music while he's reciting his poem.
47:52Well, I'll be glad to do that, toots.
47:54Very well.
47:55Lady Elaine Fairchild then will join Old Goat in this part of the festival.
47:59Sure, you take me.
48:00I'm always ready to help.
48:01Ma.
48:02Ma.
48:03Sure, I'm ready.
48:04I'm always ready.
48:05You start.
48:06Yeah, go on up there and start.
48:07That's good.
48:08Say your name.
48:11Ma.
48:12Ma.
48:13Ma.
48:14Ma.
48:15Ma.
48:16Ma.
48:17Ma.
48:18Ma.
48:19Ma.
48:20Ma.
48:21Ma.
48:22Ma.
48:23Ma.
48:24Ma.
48:25Ma.
48:26Well, if your poem is over, just keep hopping until I finish my piece.
48:28Well, if your poem is over, just keep hopping until I finish my piece.
48:33Oh, that's it.
48:34Oh, that's it.
48:35That was nice.
48:37Thank you, Old Goat and Lady Elaine.
48:40And now we have a bass violin dance by Lady Aberlin and Miss Polificate accompanied by Handyman Negri.
48:45All three from the neighborhood of Make Believe.
48:46One, two, three.
48:47One, two.
48:48One, two, three.
48:49One, two, three.
48:50One, two, three.
48:51One, two, three, three.
48:52And now we have a bass violin dance by Lady Aberlin and Miss Polificate accompanied by Handyman Negri.
48:58Accompanied by Handyman Negri, all three from the neighborhood of make-believe.
49:28A unique presentation in all respects.
49:53We in Westwood are so proud of our neighbors.
49:56Is there something that you would like to do, Daniel?
49:59Oh, no thank you, Mayor Maggie.
50:02I came to be the audience and clapped my paws.
50:06We're very glad you came.
50:07Sometimes I'm very shy.
50:10Well, you're always welcome in Westwood.
50:13What's next for the festival?
50:16Next, two of our Southwood neighbors, Keith David and James Michael Jones,
50:20are going to treat us to a bass violin puppet show.
50:23Oh, good.
50:26These are our two puppets, Keith Bass Violin and Jimmy Bass Violin.
50:32They're brothers.
50:33Now, James is going to make Jimmy talk, and I'll make Keith talk.
50:36Hello, Keith.
50:50I don't want to talk.
50:51What's the matter?
50:54I don't know.
50:55I thought we could play together.
50:58I don't feel like playing with you.
51:00Why not?
51:01You're too young.
51:02But I'm your brother, and I want to play with you.
51:06That's too bad.
51:07I'm going to play with my big friends.
51:10Bye.
51:11Oh, I feel so sad.
51:15I think I'll cry.
51:19Oh.
51:23Oh, Jimmy, I'll play with you.
51:34Who are you?
51:36I'm Daniel Striper Tiger, and I'm a good player.
51:39Well, I didn't expect you to come and help me.
51:41Well, sometimes people get sad, and sometimes they get angry.
51:45And I know all about that.
51:47And do you know about brothers who won't play with you when you want them to?
51:51Yes, I do.
51:53Oh, look.
51:54Here comes your big brother now.
51:56Who are you?
51:57I'm Daniel Tiger.
51:58I'm Jimmy's friend.
52:00Are you part of the puppet show?
52:01Oh, oh, no.
52:04Oh, I'm sorry.
52:06I forgot it was a show.
52:08Excuse me.
52:09Oh, you're welcome to stay, Daniel.
52:11Well, thank you.
52:14My friends didn't want to play with me.
52:17So I came back to play with you, Jimmy.
52:20Well.
52:21Oh, that's really good.
52:23Now you both have somebody to play with.
52:25I liked your show.
52:28And we can all sing our song together.
52:29Oh, good.
52:31Bass violin.
52:33Bass violin.
52:36Bass violin.
52:39Bass violin.
52:41We love you.
52:44Yes, we do.
52:47Yes, we do.
52:49We love you.
52:52I hope I didn't ruin your show.
53:00You helped us a lot, Daniel.
53:01Oh, thank you.
53:03Thank you for that show, all of you.
53:06And now, Charles R.
53:08And I, along with the festival orchestra and chorus, would like to end the festival with one of our favorite selections.
53:15It's a beautiful day.
53:16It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood.
53:18It's a beautiful day for a neighborhood.
53:20Would you be mine?
53:22Could you be mine?
53:24It's a neighborly day in this neighborhood.
53:26Neighborly day in this neighborhood.
53:27Could you be mine?
53:30Could you be mine?
53:32I have always wanted to have any people just like you.
53:36That was a happy festival, wasn't it?
53:53Each person did something special by playing or dancing or talking for puppets.
54:00And then they all sang together, people from all the different neighborhoods,
54:05together.
54:07I guess you know that I really love music.
54:10In fact, it's been very, very important to me since I was very little.
54:15My mom and dad didn't like me to bang when I was angry.
54:19But I found that if I played the piano when I was angry, they didn't mind that.
54:26So that's what I did.
54:30I'd play like that.
54:35And then little by little I'd see that the music would be sounding less and less angry.
54:43So it seemed that the more I played, the more anger got out of me, and I felt better about everything.
54:53That's one reason I wrote that song, Good Feeling.
54:57Because it does give you a good feeling to know that there's something that you can do to help you become the master of the mad that you feel.
55:07And not have to hurt yourself or anybody else.
55:10I hope that you're finding your ways of saying how you feel, ways that don't hurt you or anybody else, really help people to have very good feelings.
55:22It's such a good feeling to know you're alive.
55:26It's such a happy feeling you're growing inside.
55:30And when you wake up ready to say, I think I'll make a snappy new day.
55:38It's such a good feeling, a very good feeling.
55:43The feeling you know that I'll be back when the week is new.
55:48And I'll have more ideas for you.
55:52And you'll have things you'll want to talk about.
55:57I will, too.
56:01You always make each week a special one for me.
56:04You know how.
56:05By just your being yourself.
56:09There's only one person in the whole world like you.
56:12And people can like you exactly as you are.
56:16Bye.
56:22Bye.
56:23Bye.
56:52Bye.
56:53Bye.
56:54Bye.
56:55Bye.
56:56Bye.
56:57Bye.
57:12Bye.
57:13Welcome.
57:14The original production of this Mr. Rogers Neighborhood program was made possible by a grant from the Sears Roebuck Foundation
