It looks like Warner Bros. is going to get crazy rich this weekend as it’s latest rom-com is expected to post a five-day debut of $26 million or more, including $19 million-$20 million for the weekend itself.

00:05It looks like Warner Brothers is going to get crazy rich this weekend, as its latest
00:09rom-com is expected to post a five-day debut of $26 million or more, including
00:13$19 to $20 million for the weekend itself.
00:16John M. Chu's Crazy Rich Asians won the Thursday box office race with $3.8 million
00:21for a two-day total of $8.8 million, while fellow Warner Brothers shark pick
00:24The Meg snapped up $3.2 million.
00:27The big question is whether Crazy Rich Asians and The Meg, which heads into its
00:31second weekend, will find themselves in a close race for No. 1.
00:39Chu's modestly budgeted $30 million film, based on Kevin Kwan's best-selling 2013 novel
00:43of the same name, is the first Hollywood studio movie since 1993's The Joy Luck Club
00:48to feature an all-westernized Asian cast.
00:51The story follows American Rachel Chu, played by Constance Wu, as she accompanies
00:55her longtime boyfriend Nick Young, portrayed by Henry Golding, to his best friend's wedding
00:59in Singapore.
01:00As Rachel visits Nick's hometown for the first time, she quickly learns that her boyfriend
01:03is not only from one of the richest families in Asia, but that she'll have a hard time
01:07winning over his mother.
01:09The weekend's two other new offerings are Pete Berg's Mile 22, starring Mark Wahlberg,
01:13and Studio 8's prehistoric adventure drama Alpha, directed by Albert Hughes and starring
01:17Cody Smith-McPhee.
01:19Mile 22, which is tracking to open in the $17 million range, grossed $1 million in Thursday
01:24evening previews. The action thriller, which marks the fourth film Berg and Wahlberg have made
01:28together, tells the story of an elite CIA operative and his team who are tasked with
01:33escorting a high-value asset who is being targeted by terrorists. The film is currently sporting
01:37a Rotten Tomatoes score of 25 percent.
01:40Meanwhile, Alpha took in $525,000 in Thursday previews for a debut of $8 to $10 million.
01:45Set 20,000 years ago during the last ice age, the story centers on a young man who was injured
01:50and left for dead by his tribe while on a hunt. The film's current Rotten Tomatoes score is 83 percent.
