Transcript
00:00Melissa McCarthy, everybody, give it up!
00:03What did Sean Spicer think of his surprise cameo at the Emmys?
00:07As he told The Hollywood Reporter afterward,
00:09I thought it was kind of funny.
00:10For better or worse, the most talked about moment
00:13of host Stephen Colbert's opening monologue was Spicer's appearance.
00:17It may have been hard to predict when he exited his post
00:19as White House press secretary in July,
00:21but Spicer's celebrity looked huge.
00:24Sunday, when he practically received a hero's welcome
00:26the moment he stepped off stage.
00:28There were hugs and handshakes in the Microsoft Theater lobby
00:30where Spicer was spotted by The Hollywood Reporter
00:33just before 7 p.m., holding a large beer and posing for pictures.
00:37Then following the show, as Spicer made his way
00:39to the L.A. Convention Center
00:40for the official Governor's Ball afterparty,
00:42he was constantly besieged by more photo requests.
00:45That's when The Hollywood Reporter caught up with him.
00:47It's an honor, Spicer said, of the chance to participate in the Emmys.
00:51I have a lot of respect for folks who do what they do in film
00:54and on television, so it's a real honor to be invited.
00:57And as for how his appearance came together,
00:59Spicer said, I had a conversation with Stephen
01:01and his executive producer.
01:03They came up with a concept, and I thought it was kind of funny.
01:06I said I'd be there.
01:07Spicer pushed out a podium and declared on live television,
01:11This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period.
01:17The statement made light of his assertions about Trump's inauguration.
01:21And that didn't sit well with many Emmy viewers
01:24and members of the media who also had taken a beating
01:26during his White House run.
01:28Sean Spicer's Emmy Awards cameo was a sickening, cynical laugh grab,
01:32read a slate headline.
01:33While the Daily Beast's Kevin Fallon wrote,
01:36Sean Spicer at the Emmys, don't make this guy a folk hero.
01:39This guy doesn't get to be funny.
01:40THR's Daniel Feinberg, for his part,
01:43didn't find the cameo funny in the first place, writing,
01:45It wasn't funny at all. Sean Spicer isn't funny at all,
01:48and giving him not funny material doesn't help.
01:51For more inside info on Spicer's wild and crazy night,
