00:04The Wonder Years are coming back to TV.
00:06It's been announced that ABC is teaming up with Empire co-creator Lee Daniels
00:10for a reboot of the coming-of-age comedy nearly 30 years since it wrapped its sixth season run,
00:15and this time around the show will center around a black family.
00:18While the original series starred Fred Savage and revolved around a white middle-class family in the 1960s suburbs,
00:24Lee's reboot will focus on how a black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama
00:28in the turbulent late 60s made sure it was the Wonder Years for them too.
00:32Per sources, the goal is for the new Wonder Years to be developed for the 2021-2022 television season.
00:37Comedy veteran Saladin K. Patterson, known for his work on The Big Bang Theory, Frasier, and The Birdie Mack Show,
00:42will pen the script and executive produce alongside Daniels and his lead Daniels Entertainment banner president, Mark Velez.
00:49Meanwhile, Savage, who got his big break with the Wonder Years and has maintained a long career in Hollywood,
00:53will also executive produce and direct the reboot.
00:56The original Wonder Years ran for six seasons between 1988 and 1993,
01:00and earned a prestigious Peabody Award and an Emmy for Best Comedy after its first season.
01:05Savage, at 13, became the youngest actor ever, nominated for a Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy in 1988.
