Aaron Sorkin was never able to get 'The Newsroom' to where he wanted it to go, which happened for a number of reasons.
Transcript
00:00Aaron Sorkin is opening up about his time creating the newsroom and explaining why the
00:08show felt like a quote, pebble in the shoe.
00:11In a recent video interview with Vanity Fair in which he discussed his entire career, the
00:15Oscar-winning screenwriter dove into the issues he faced with the HBO series, saying he was
00:19never able to get it quite right.
00:21I always felt like I had a pebble in my shoe.
00:24I felt like I could write a good scene, I could put a couple of good scenes together.
00:29Sorkin compared the situation to a football team that can put together two good quarters
00:33of play, but not a full game's worth.
00:35The newsroom ran for three seasons beginning in 2012 and consisted of 25 episodes.
00:40The political drama followed the behind-the-scenes drama of a television news channel where Jeff
00:44Daniel starred as anchor Will McAvoy.
00:46Sorkin said the problem started immediately in the first episode, a classic moment in the
00:50series where McAvoy suffers a breakdown and gives the America isn't the greatest country
00:55in the world speech.
00:56When you ask what makes us the greatest country in the world, I don't know what the f*** you're
01:00talking about.
01:01It was his, I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore.
01:04I wasn't lecturing America on what was wrong with it.
01:08The other problem, as Sorkin says, was having the show handle actual large news events that
01:12happened.
01:13I think that there was a feeling that I was trying to show the pros how it ought to have
01:18been done.
01:19That we're going to do this again, only we're going to give it the West Wind treatment.
01:22He continued saying,
01:23I didn't feel safe making up news.
01:25I didn't think it would be real.
01:27I didn't want it to be silly.
01:29It was just meant to show people putting on the news in a world where doing the news and
01:32profit concerns are always competing.
