Donno refutes reports that #1 prospect Jackson Cantwell chose the Canes strictly for money! What are the benefits of an offensive linemen choosing to attend UM? How does this team differ from last year's roster? How will Carson Beck's style of play differ from Cam Ward's?

00:00and we are familiar with the petty we love the petty and it appears we have some petty crimes
00:05going against our beloved miami hurricanes so we turn to an expert a man who hosts the
00:10locked on canes podcast you can hear me on wqam on the canes post game show he is alex dono a
00:17canes lifer joining us on the toyota of hollywood guest line shop over 2 000 on sale at one location
00:23at toyota of hollywood on 441 between hollywood and sheridan toyota of hollywood.com dono how are
00:28you buddy i'm good tobin and i'm also petty you and i are have a lot in common in that area so
00:35seeing jimmy bounce brought a smile to my face and and seeing the florida panthers not only beat
00:40toronto last night but they took their souls like the maple leaves were completely lifeless
00:47throughout that entire game and man six to one i hope we beat those fools eight nothing tomorrow
00:53night in the elimination game well dono it could have been six nothing the game beforehand
00:59i mean they just got some stellar goal goalie play so that's kind of what happened when there's a reason
01:06why he's your backup goal let's be clear that he has moments but he's not going to play on a consistent
01:12basis night in and night out yeah no that's true and hopefully he's so shell-shocked after giving up
01:20six goals the other night that he'll give up uh 36 next time so dono we're very excited this week
01:28you're very you're boots on the ground with everything with the canes and all that jackson
01:32can't well top recruit i'm following your twitter account all this is as this is all going and i can't
01:39believe the belly aching that is going on because the miami hurricanes landed a good player can you take
01:46us a little bit into the drama of this the canes land this stud and like all hell breaks loose with
01:51other team fan bases whining because the miami hurricanes got them yeah i mean in miami uh as
01:59other schools have but miami has been recruiting jackson can't well literally for over a year if not
02:05multiple years so it's it's not as if you know they woke up a couple days ago or a couple months ago
02:11and said okay we need to have this guy let's offer him a few million or something like that so uh and
02:16there were times you know even a month ago when people thought hey miami is the prohibitive favorite
02:22to land can't well who's a behemoth offensive tackle six foot eight 325 pound he's the the top player in
02:28the class of 2026 and so like there there was a time about a month ago when it looked like this is
02:33going to be a miami player right but then as things often do when you follow recruiting for high school
02:39kids uh the trends seemed to be changing right there was a time oh it looks like oregon's the
02:45favorite and then for a couple weeks before his actual announcement it looked like georgia was the
02:50big favorite but then like a couple hours before he announced he started to get the leaks that hey
02:56it's probably going to be miami and he did indeed choose miami and so um it's one of these uh belly
03:04aches that have become and complaints have become more and more common in this day and age in college
03:08football and you especially hear this a lot from sec fans and it's ironic because nil was kind of a
03:15thing in the sec before it was legal and now that the level uh that the playing field has been leveled
03:22a little bit they don't seem to like it the teams can legally drop bags to land players and so yeah
03:27from the moment jackson can't well picked miami there became an argument very loud from the georgia
03:33fans and from certain national media members the narrative became well well he clearly picked miami
03:39for the money that this was this was a money move he chose the bag and tobin and leroy i'm not saying
03:45miami didn't give him a great monetary offer i'm sure they did and i don't think there's anything wrong
03:51with that because when it's legal you pay what you can to get the best possible players to your program
03:56but i can also tell you with what i know about jackson can't well um this guy is not gonna make
04:03a decision strictly based on that that you know the relationships he's been developing for months if
04:10not years with mario cristobal and alex mirabal and he was going to be a millionaire wherever he went
04:15right so he decided to take the proven offensive line coaching the comfort level he had with miami who
04:22he had mentioned throughout his process he didn't hear from anybody more than he heard from mario
04:27cristobal head coach who's kind of your second offensive line coach and alex mirabal the offensive
04:32line coach and i guess it didn't help that on three sports published a story late last week
04:37where they like mentioned oh miami we heard is offering him you know two million or north of two
04:44million they didn't mention any numbers for any other school so it already kind of planted that money
04:49narrative and so i think the problem that people on the miami side have with this narrative and the
04:54problem that jackson can't well should have with this narrative is anytime miami lands a big time
05:00player uh they always throw out there oh well this was look at this big nil offer it's all about money
05:05money money when miami lands a player had had oregon who also bought oregon is probably the biggest nil
05:10spender by the way or georgia landed him it would have been oh he chose this great program he's going to
05:16play for kirby smart or dan lanning so i think that's the issue people have is anytime miami lands
05:21somebody it's all about money and then the last thing i'll say before i'll let you ask me another
05:25question i've been ranting and raving for a while here but the last thing i'll say on this is if you're
05:31going to bring up this narrative uh that jackson can't well would only choose miami for an nil offer
05:37i could at least halfway entertain that argument if this guy played any other position but you're talking
05:46about an offensive lineman who wants to be developed by the guys who developed panay sewell
05:53and the guys who are currently developing cc maui noah who has a chance to be a first round draft pick
05:59next year um if he played any other position i could at least like allow you to carry on this money
06:05narrative but for an offensive lineman who says he sees himself best fitting in miami i don't know
06:11why you would argue that considering the type of o-line coaching miami has i can tell you why dono
06:16and and here's what it is with the sec for so long alabama georgia clemson could sit at a kid's table
06:27and put their rings on the table right and say that what you're getting when you come here are all these
06:36excellent things right but keep in mind when nick saban left he said we don't have enough money
06:42they have it they're just not putting it out there and now you have these other schools
06:47that are saying oh we acknowledge your rings and we can't use that how about an extra meal
06:55and they have a problem with that because for so long their dominance over the sport was
07:02i'm gonna just put my rings on the table and now they can't do that now you can't go in
07:09to a kid's house and only talk about your storied franchise or your storied history
07:17because to be honest with you kids don't give a damn about that yeah and they have a problem with
07:24that that's why more schools like lsu who have a good program but they can't be throwing it around
07:33like alabama or clemson or georgia right you have schools like old miss throwing money at it right
07:43so it's not just miami but it fits because it's one of the guys they thought they were going to get
07:49yeah no i i think you're spot on with that and you know i know it's something that uh can't well
07:57talked about he even actually which i thought was kind of saucy on his part he was doing some
08:02interviews right after he made his announcement uh and he even like he brought up uh pete nako
08:08savant three by name like he called him out because that was someone who wrote an article late last week
08:14who was like oh well miami's offering him two mil and he says players often commit to georgia for the
08:20georgia discount like it's so mo it's so noble to go to georgia for less money so it's like yeah i don't
08:27know how much money georgia offered i don't i don't even know how much money miami offered it's all rumors
08:31and hearsay right because they they don't publish the nil numbers but so so if georgia hypothetically
08:37because a lot of georgia fans are saying this if georgia offered jackson campwell literally half of
08:42what miami offered you're really going to shame the young man for choosing to make double the money
08:48at a place where he knows he can get developed it's like i mean leroy if you were if you were a
08:53free agent in the job market and uh and you know you were offered uh half a mil to do one job and
09:00then a full mil at the other and you were going to be happy at either spot like should they should
09:04they shame you for choosing to make the one mil over the half mil i mean the whole the whole thing is
09:09ridiculous that's the thing i'm talking about dono they're sitting here talking like
09:12oh how dare you turn down uh georgia no matter what we are for you it's georgia right is it true
09:21dono is it true they like they knocked them down the rankings after this happened that's like yeah
09:27people did well here's here's the thing man and i uh i i had some because factually yes that did
09:36happen tobin let me to be fair because uh i i upset some people uh when i was angrily
09:42tweeting about this last night um he was yes they they updated the 24 7 sports recruiting rankings
09:50yesterday the day after can't well committed and he dropped i guess he was number three overall
09:55on that service and they dropped him from three to ten and like i don't think anything's changed like
10:00he hasn't played football in like five or six months so i don't know how they just decide to drop
10:04him but i was ranting about it and i was told um and i'm going to assume this is factually correct
10:11that they actually filed this change it just didn't come into effect till yesterday this change was
10:16filed several days before he committed so even if he had committed to georgia or oregon he still would
10:24have dropped seven spots now obviously sounds convenient i got i got my tinfoil hat with me because it is
10:30convenient because you know i i got this us against the world mentality when it comes to
10:35miami like it's very convenient every time miami lands a five-star player they knock them down a peg
10:40but supposedly this one is just uh an awful coincidence all right if they say so well here's
10:47another one that got kind of crazy this summer because it was cool we saw carson beck starting to
10:51throw so that's that's gonna do so but like he signs with the canes naturally after they get the
10:56number one quarterback drafted another crazy decision that he would make but then all of a
11:00sudden everybody's belly aching about how much the canes paid him and they're like oh he ruined he
11:05ruined the market for everybody tennessee's quarterback is leaving and i'm like how in god's name is that the
11:10canes fault i'm trying to figure this stuff out donna i mean because again people the same way back to
11:17like people just cannot believe a player would choose miami over georgia carson beck already did
11:27that and i know like there's a lot of narrative changing happening in athens where georgia fans
11:31will say oh this guy he sucks we never we never actually wanted him to play for us again he's
11:37terrible gunner stockton that's the truth carson beck old damaged goods we don't want him here
11:41that's the narrative there now uh my understanding is like they didn't want to including kirby smart
11:48did not want him to leave like kirby smart did not want back to leave oh really yeah that that's my
11:54understanding um and you know but again whether they wanted him to leave or not you still the idea
11:59of going from georgia to miami people can't believe it they can't fathom it and then you throw in the
12:04nil the alleged nil money as well um and yet listen as far as carson beck goes
12:10um you know it's it's just unfortunate him coming off of that injury he's healthy now
12:15but with him coming off of the elbow injury you know he wasn't able to participate in spring football
12:20fully like he was out there he just wasn't able to throw which is a pretty big part of what he does
12:24but he was out there working and stuff but you know i haven't really had i've seen him throw in
12:29person i haven't had a chance to to talk to him yet because he hasn't been available to the media
12:33because he was injured uh but he is throwing now he's been cleared to throw for the past several weeks
12:38and uh my understanding i've heard that they're going to start having the player run practices
12:44um on monday so he's going to be able to be throwing with his teammates in the next couple of
12:49days and you know it's you know cam ward is special and irreplaceable but i i think miami going out and
12:55getting somebody like carson beck with his experience level his proven production on the field i think is
13:01a really good move and you know i don't necessarily think miami's going to have the number one offense in
13:06the country again but if the defense is no longer embarrassing uh and i was gonna i was gonna
13:13follow up with that donald like give us a big picture your thoughts before we even get to camp
13:17do you feel like it's fixed because man that was so frustrated by the end of last year to
13:21to be spotted a 21 nothing lead and feel like you have no hope do you feel like they've done enough
13:28hopefully to to plug some of this up i mean i don't know how much else they could have done like
13:33in terms of offseason moves right i mean they they changed defensive coordinators because it was
13:39clearly not working under lance gidry last year um i i like the guy that they hired uh cory heatherman
13:45who uh kind of worked a miracle in minnesota last year you know they were uh 69th in total defense
13:52before he took over then he got them into the top 10 in just one year last year um and a lot more
13:59aggressive and a lot more direct like his defensive philosophy the players seem to like it you know
14:04miami's players who were you know learning the system during spring football so i i think uh i i
14:09think the the defensive scheme is going to suit them better so that's one thing and then i mean miami
14:14went wild in the transfer portal when it came to trying to bring in new players like the the only
14:20position group that they just weren't able to get too much in because there wasn't a lot of quality
14:25available is defensive tackle uh they did get one pretty good player uh back in the first transfer
14:30portal window david blay from louisiana tech who had a had a couple good seasons there and had a good
14:36spring with miami but so many new faces in the defensive secondary and i think uh xavier lucas from
14:42wisconsin a cornerback uh zechariah poyser a safety from jacksonville state who was a stud there the last
14:49couple of years and uh and i also like uh the safety from tennessee jacoby thomas that they brought
14:55in and keante scott and nickel from houston and a lot of the players they're bringing in were coached
15:00in previous spots by miami defensive coaches like where they were before including i think one of
15:06the guys who could make a really big impact his linebacker muhammad torre from rutgers who was
15:12coached because uh cory heatherman who's the new dc two years ago he was the linebackers coach at
15:17rutgers and uh and torre had his best season then under heatherman so um honestly if the defense
15:24isn't like dramatically better and you don't set a very hard high bar from last year but if they're
15:29not dramatically better than where they were last year i think you have to start feeling like hey
15:34we're cursed and mario just can't find the right defensive coordinator because they they've done
15:38about all they possibly can to go out there and make that defense i don't know if they're going to be
15:43top 10 necessarily but if you have a top 25 defense and then maybe a top 25 offense this year
15:50i think they could end up having more success on the field hey so dono let me ask you this because
15:57i think a lot of people are gonna the offense is gonna look different because carson beck is not
16:05cam ward um but is it gonna be different because carson beck isn't as good or is it gonna be
16:18different because carson beck plays the position differently and it's gonna probably take a little
16:24bit of time to kind of for the team to find his sweet spot all the above and also um it's gonna look
16:32different because uh his weapons are a lot different from what ward had um you know something
16:37that cam ward had the benefit of last year was a more experienced receiver core uh now miami has a
16:45couple of experienced guys but they brought him in as transfers like cj daniels and keelan marion and
16:50tony johnson like the the ones who were returning from last year uh you know jojo trader who i i think i
16:57think has a potential to blow out to blow up this year but you know he was a true freshman last year
17:02who didn't play a whole lot uh but he's a former you know blue chip guy out of high school um you
17:07know elijah loft in the tight end is gonna you know try to kind of do what elijah arroyo did last
17:12year he's a different player he's more of like a swiss army knife type of guy but really productive um
17:18so i i think and again like all the reasons you stated i think are why the offense is going to look
17:22different but then another one is um it's miami's offense uh i don't believe is going to be nearly as
17:29pass heavy but part of that i believe is going to come from assuming your defense is better um
17:37you're not going to be in shootouts every week because that was a thing last year and you know
17:42miami had the perfect shootout guy it was like having wild bill hickok or something in uh in cam
17:50ward because you you know you you spot that guy a 21 point deficit and say ward we got to throw every
17:55down from here on out giddy up like he loved he was he was built he was built for that um but you
18:01know if you can actually have play with some leads this year you know you can get your running game a
18:05little bit more involved because like miami's running game last year it was it was really good
18:09uh but they didn't have the opportunity to reach their full potential because i look there's a
18:14disconnect here because miami was number six in the country in yards per carry but they were 31st
18:20overall in rushing so like the yards per carry being almost top five didn't really match up with
18:26your overall running game not being in the top 25 and it's because they didn't have an opportunity to
18:30run the ball as much as they would like to so i think that's going to be a part of it as well and
18:34actually one of the transfers that i'm i'm really excited about that miami brought in is um a running
18:40back who played at north dakota state uh chamar brown and north dakota state i know it's in the fcs but
18:46that's like the alabama crimson tide of the fcs they win the championship every year and they they
18:51actually they had a guy drafted in the first round of the nfl this year so it's yeah so it's like it's
18:55like a different it's a different level of fcs program and this dude marty brown uh they call him
19:00marty had you know 1200 yards 15 touchdowns last year he helped them win the fcs national championship
19:06uh so i think he's going to be great in a rotation with mark fletcher and jordan lyle so i think miami
19:13probably by design and this is not to take anything away from carson beck because he just
19:17wants to win in any context but you know be able to run the football a little bit more and you know
19:23if your weapons like in the receiving game are not as dynamic as what ward had last year i think
19:28miami can make up for some of that with the running game is alex dono go check out the locked on canes
19:34podcast as in depth as you can get with your miami hurricanes he bleeds orange and green dono thanks
19:39so much for the time man really appreciate you thank you so much go panthers thanks
19:43i don't know
