Dan Fogelman discusses new characters, major storylines and the NBC drama's final two seasons as it heads closer toward its endgame.
Transcript
00:00You have no idea what it means to actually take care of people.
00:02Oh yes, oh exactly, because I left, right? Because I left and you stayed and played martyrs.
00:05I stayed and I took care of our family.
00:08This Is Us wrapped up its fourth season with an hour that was filled with twists and turns,
00:12which encompassed four different time periods.
00:15Tuesday's hour-long finale found the Pearson clan in the past, present, future, and near future.
00:21In the past, Jack and Rebecca spent the big three's first birthday finally dealing with
00:25the loss of the third triplet, Kyle, featuring a reappearance of Dr. K.
00:28In the present, where a bulk of the drama took place, the Pearsons all gathered to celebrate
00:33Baby Jack's first birthday.
00:35We learned that Rebecca had agreed to Randall's request to participate in the Alzheimer's
00:38study in St. Louis that would take her away from the family for nine months.
00:42This is what leads to Randall and Kevin's big blowout fight that's been teased for months.
00:47Hurtful words were exchanged that won't make the relationship easy to mend.
00:51Big shockers from the finale included Madison revealing to Kevin that she's pregnant with
00:55twins from their one-night stand, and Kate and Toby deciding they want another
00:58child and consider adoption.
01:01Which takes us into the far future, where Kate and Toby's son, Jack Damon, welcome his
01:05first child with his wife.
01:06A mysterious woman rushes to the hospital and is revealed to be Jack's little sister.
01:11And the near future, where previous flash-forwards show the Pearsons gathering on Rebecca's
01:14deathbed, show older Kevin with his twin children, and wearing a wedding band around his finger,
01:19revealing that he is in fact married.
01:21Now with all the twists and turns Tuesday's finale offered, This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman
01:26spoke out about the episode and even answered a few burning questions about the biggest reveals
01:30and what's to come on the series.
01:32Of Kevin and Randall's big blowout, Fogelman says it's easy to forget that the two have
01:36always had a bit of a strained relationship.
01:39These brothers have only really gotten along and had a real adult relationship for the
01:43two and a half, three seasons of the show.
01:45When we first met them until halfway through season one, these brothers felt very estranged,
01:50weren't that close, and developed this relationship in the course of the first couple of seasons.
01:54All that fed into what we tried to execute.
01:56Fogelman also teased how much time will be spent in the future moving forward, saying,
02:00The plan is to kind of tilt into different timelines that go past our present day a little
02:04bit more as we move forward.
02:06More of that is coming, and not just in that deep, deep future where Jack Jr. lives.
02:10And on season six being the end of the series, Fogelman says it was a gift to be picked up
02:15for two consecutive three-season pickups, which was really kind of to plan out and map out
02:19our storytelling in a big-picture way.
02:21That's when the Pearson story will basically come to a close.
02:24Other teases to look forward to in season five is a deeper look into Rebecca and Miguel's
02:29relationship throughout the decades, Kevin's fiancé storyline, and, quote,
02:33something big that'll be happening in the already-written season five premiere.
