00:00There was a battle about, do they get engaged?
00:03A long...
00:03Okay, we survived it.
00:05We did. We made it through.
00:06But we weren't on the same side of it.
00:07Yeah.
00:08Hi, I'm Jenny Connor.
00:09I'm Erin Foster.
00:10We are here at the Hollywood Reporter cover shoot for Nobody Wants This Season 2.
00:15Woo!
00:22I definitely never set out to write a rom-com,
00:25but once it was absorbed for people as a rom-com,
00:28I think that the romance and the love and the togetherness
00:31is a really big part of what people love and enjoy,
00:34and so I'm not making an artistic choice to kill anybody off,
00:39you know, or find out no is cheating on her.
00:41Yet.
00:42Yet.
00:42Jenny wants to kill everyone off.
00:44I know.
00:44There was a battle about, do they get engaged?
00:47A long...
00:48Okay, we survived it.
00:49We did. We made it through.
00:50But we weren't on the same side of it.
00:52Yeah.
00:52We were against each other, and one of us won.
00:55And it was Jenny.
00:56Okay, it was Jenny.
00:59But we got through it.
01:00And are you excited now?
01:02And I'm very happy.
01:03I would have been happy either way.
01:05But I'm very happy.
01:06Disagree.
01:07And then the other battle was what to do with Sasha and Morgan's,
01:11you know, will they, won't they?
01:13Is there a romance?
01:14What is it?
01:15Is it a flirtation?
01:16How far does it go?
01:17Does it go anywhere?
01:18Does it go nowhere?
01:19That was something we really stressed about Season 1,
01:21and then also Season 2,
01:23trying to figure out how to clean it up properly.
01:24But we also wanted to really keep it grounded and real,
01:28so it wasn't a thing that just disappeared completely,
01:32which is why, you know, right at the beginning,
01:35Esther drags them into the bedroom and is like,
01:38what's happening?
01:39And we're putting a stop to it,
01:41which felt very Esther to us.
01:43In Season 1, it was going to go...
01:46It was going to go further.
01:48And then while we were in the process,
01:50it just didn't feel like it was tracking for us.
01:54Also, we really wanted to get Morgan and Sasha
01:57to be able to hang out in Season 2.
01:59Yeah.
02:00If they had gone too far,
02:02or if there was a lot of tension there,
02:03then we wouldn't be able to do that.
02:05The scene where Esther tells Joanne,
02:07like, you're Jewish,
02:09we shot, like, a month after we wrapped or something.
02:13I mean, I had already gone to the Bahamas.
02:14I was like, guys, I'm done.
02:15We did this.
02:16I went to the Bahamas,
02:17and then all of a sudden I'm getting a phone call.
02:18He is like us, peace.
02:19Literally, I was like, I'm on a boat with my family,
02:22with my phone turned off,
02:23and they're like, you have to rewrite that scene.
02:25So we shot that a month later,
02:26because it just didn't...
02:27It was such an important moment,
02:29and it wasn't right.
02:32We wanted to get it perfect,
02:33and so we shot it at a completely different location
02:35a month later, and it turned out great.
02:39But you would never know that it was shot separately,
02:42differently a month later,
02:43and at a completely different location.
02:45It was perfect.
02:45We really needed to do that.
02:47It turned into a much more emotional scene,
02:50and it tracked where they both were,
02:53and it was...
02:55We always had the idea that she...
02:57Esther would be the one to kind of pivot Joanne,
03:00but we didn't have such a sweet version.
03:03It was really nice.
03:04We really loved this idea that Esther becomes this person
03:08that brings her into the fold and welcomes her
03:10and says, you really are one of us.
03:12It felt like she was making herself so clear all season,
03:16and we loved this idea that Esther doesn't want to be Esther
03:19at Purim, and it was so symbolic
03:21that we really felt like, you know,
03:25we all have friends who've been married a long time.
03:27We're all married.
03:28We're thinking we know what it's like for people
03:30when you really get that itch,
03:32like there's something missing.
03:34You kind of do have to figure it out on your own a lot of times,
03:37and we love the idea of Sasha showing up as this really good guy
03:41and being like, I'll get out of your way
03:43so that you can figure that out.
03:46So it was always the goal,
03:47but there was some...
03:48Some people weren't on board
03:49and wanted us to sort of soften it a bit
03:52and make it, you know...
03:54Not final.
03:55Make it not final and vague,
03:56and for me personally,
03:57I just don't love when I'm watching a TV show
03:59and nothing happens.
04:00Like, I needed something definitive to happen.
04:03Yes.
04:04And who knows if they'll stay apart,
04:07be back together.
04:08Only we know.
04:10Exactly.
04:11There's a lot of happy accidents
04:12that happen in the writing, you know,
04:14where we were aiming for this thing
04:16and then it stood out to us,
04:18wait, this is so similar to the ending of season one.
04:21Are we just repeating ourselves?
04:22And then we thought, wait a second,
04:23no, we're doing it,
04:24but it's going to be in the reverse.
04:25She's going to run to him, you know,
04:28she's going to be trying to find him.
04:30She has this feeling that, you know,
04:33she has this big realization,
04:34and we really liked the idea
04:35that this would be a surprising, unexpected,
04:38I've already been here kind of energy.
