Creator Dan Fogelman and his stars reveal some of what to expect from season 5 of 'This Is Us.'

00:03No, you were.

00:05But you still got time.

00:07This Is Us is gearing up for its season 5 premiere,

00:09so we're giving fans a refresher on where things left off

00:12and what to expect ahead of the show's super-sized two-hour premiere on Tuesday.

00:16The key points to remember heading into season 5,

00:19Madison is pregnant with twins from her one-night stand with Kevin,

00:23Kate and Toby have decided to adopt another baby,

00:26which a flash-forward reveals will be a girl named Haley,

00:29and Randall and Kevin had an earth-shattering fight, which leads to a major rift.

00:33Flash-forwards from season 4 show that the siblings are not speaking on their 40th birthday.

00:38Speaking of the birthday, a major plot point to note is that

00:41when This Is Us first showed flash-forward scenes from the Pearson's 40th celebration,

00:45COVID-19 wasn't actually a thing.

00:48But now that it's become a global pandemic,

00:50it's very much a theme that the series will touch upon throughout its upcoming fifth season.

00:54Series creator Dan Fogelman told The Hollywood Reporters Leslie Goldberg and Dan Feinberg

00:59on their TV's Top 5 podcast that it was important to mention the strict COVID-19

01:04protocols the family would follow to get together in order to be a model of responsible behavior

01:08on screen. And while he says none of the Pearsons will get COVID, it will still have

01:13a major impact on their lives, as it has on everyone's lives in 2020.

01:17Fogelman adds that it won't be the biggest focus throughout the rest of the season,

01:20but people will still wear masks whenever they would in real life, saying,

01:24we're not going to have pregnant people in a doctor's office not wearing a mask.

01:28Another major event that will not be glossed over are the Black Lives Matter protests.

01:33That's something that will be tackled head-on and will be a part of the two-hour premiere.

01:37Specifically, star Susan Kelechi Watson, who plays Beth Pearson, said the episode will show

01:41how Beth and Randall talk to their daughters about the protests and how it will affect their lives.

01:46Another major plot point that will carry into season five will, of course, be Kevin and Randall's fight.

01:51According to Fogelman, this is not something that will be quickly resolved as the new season begins.

01:57That's a fight that's been building for 40 years between these two boys and now men

02:01who grew up in the same house. It's in the front and center of our premiere,

02:05and it'll be the front and center of our show for quite a bit.

02:08This Is Us premieres Tuesday, October 27th at 9 p.m. on NBC.
