00:00That kid is my whole world and I feel like I'm letting him down.
00:04Our son is always going to choose you. Always.
00:08With This Is Us returning to NBC on January 14th, the cast and creator
00:12Dan Fogelman are offering fans a guide to the second half of season 4,
00:16teasing big guest stars and even bigger storylines. After a two-month hiatus,
00:20Tuesday's new episode picks up in real time with the same amount of time also passing
00:24for the Pearsons on screen, and Dan Fogelman assuring that fans will be caught up
00:29on what's happened in the time since.
00:31The episode picks up with Randall, played by Sterling K. Brown, traveling to Los Angeles
00:35to care for his mother Rebecca, played by Mandy Moore. Meanwhile, Kevin, played by
00:39Justin Hartley, is continuing his quest for romance, and Kate and Toby, played by
00:43Chrissy Metz and Chris Sullivan, meets Toby's CrossFit friends.
00:46One of the biggest things Fogelman teases are major developments for the family.
00:50He reveals that the first episode back will set up a new trilogy of episodes that will,
00:54like in season 2, focus on a single Pearson sibling during the same time period for
00:59three consecutive weeks. It'll also delve deeper into the memory issues Rebecca has been facing.
01:04Fogelman also teases that the first of the trilogy will focus on Randall and his ongoing
01:08battle with anxiety, saying,
01:18Susan Kelechi Watson, who plays Beth in the series, told THR that Randall's mental health will also
01:23affect Beth and their daughters, and the whole family will try to figure out how to deal with it
01:27together. Another focus for the back end of season 4 will be Kate's marriage. The midseason finale
01:32revealed that not only is Toby ripped from CrossFit, he's also texting about the distance between
01:37him and Kate with some of his buddies from the gym. That disconnect will continue to reveal a rift in
01:42their marriage when the show returns, with Metz calling it uncharted territory for the couple.
01:46Additionally, Metz teases,
01:48the Kate-centric episode that's coming up in the trilogy is probably one of my favorite episodes ever for
01:53so many reasons. Another big storyline to tackle in season 4 will be Kevin's love life. A flash
01:59forward in the midseason finale revealed that while Kevin's fatherhood dreams are coming true, with a
02:03yet-to-be revealed pregnant fiancé, he and his brother are not on speaking terms. While the mystery of
02:08who exactly that fiancé is will play out over the course of the season, Vogelman confirmed to THR that
02:13there will be an answer by the end of season 4. And is there a chance that fiancé could be none other
02:19than Sophia Bush? Well, it's a strong guess. The actress has signed on for a guest starring role in the
02:24NBC drama, and while they haven't revealed who she'll be playing, it's said that Bush will be
02:29involved with Kevin's storyline. Other big name guest stars include John Legend, who's set to appear in the
02:34midseason opener along with his new single, Conversations in the Dark, and Pamela Adlin, who will
02:39also guest star intersecting with Randall's storyline. For more details on what to expect from
