00:00Julio Cesar Chavez was boxing's most invincible fighter.
00:05Over 13 years and 3 weight classes, he won 87 straight bouts and 5 world titles.
00:12With his relentless style and fabled body attack, he was unquestionably the best fighter
00:19in the world.
00:22But after two decades and 109 fights, time has eroded his skills and he has struggled
00:27through a series of lackluster performances and disastrous losses.
00:33Now, as Chavez faces a champion 8 years his junior, will he be able to defy the passage
00:39of time and regain a final moment of greatness?
00:43We'll find out when the 38-year-old living legend meets WBC super lightweight champion
00:48Kostya Su next.
00:57We'll see you next time.
01:14Welcome to the Valley of the Sun, Phoenix, Arizona,
01:41where the mercury reached a blistering 112 today.
01:44In Arizona, the fight game has had an up-and-down history,
01:47but tonight, Julio Cesar Chavez is hoping history repeats,
01:51for it was 20 years ago, another Mexican legend,
01:54the late Salvador Sanchez, won his first major title at this very site.
02:00It's fight night in Phoenix, as our main event will feature
02:03the highly controversial WBC Super Lightweight Championship.
02:07The fiercely competitive Costezu will defend his title against the legendary,
02:12but aging Julio Cesar Chavez.
02:14First up in this 140-pound twin build,
02:17it'll be the charismatic Hector Camacho Jr.
02:19versus former World Lightweight champ Phillip Holiday
02:22for the WBA North American Super Lightweight Crown.
02:26As we bring you inside to Veterans Memorial Coliseum,
02:30capacity 15,500, early arriving crowd,
02:33near sellout anticipated, tickets ranging from 25 to 300 bucks,
02:38selling at a surprising rate for a fight labeled a gross mismatch.
02:42The fans, well, they're expected to be emotionally charged and pro Chavez.
02:47Hello again everybody, Steve Albert, ringside from Phoenix.
02:55Tonight's featured fight has caused a major stir in the boxing world.
02:58Many believe Julio Cesar Chavez, while once a great champion, shouldn't be here.
03:03The WBC calls him the number one mandatory,
03:05yet he hasn't beaten a fighter in the top ten of any weight class in the past year.
03:10You've got to wonder if it's responsible to allow a 38-year-old man
03:14with clearly diminishing skills into the ring with a ferocious puncher eight years his junior.
03:19Is it possible that Chavez can dig deep and pull off a competitive bout, if not a win?
03:25Yes, possible, but highly unlikely.
03:28And with that, let me bring on my ringside partner, former world champion Bobby Chez.
03:32And Bobby, why is this fight happening?
03:35Well, Steve, we have to be honest for a minute and talk about some of the things
03:38that are very wrong with professional boxing.
03:39The sanctioning bodies are autonomous in their rule
03:42and therefore can rank fighters wherever they like.
03:44I don't have a problem with Julio Cesar Chavez fighting for this title
03:47or even being ranked in the top ten.
03:49But to make him the mandatory challenger means
03:51that Kasia Zhu can't fight anyone else
03:54or he would be stripped of his world championship, and that is ludicrous.
03:57That's why tonight we're here for us to cover this
03:59because Kasia Zhu has a deal to put his fights on showtime.
04:02Yeah, some politicians try to stop it,
04:05and Las Vegas doesn't even have a betting line on the fight,
04:08so that'll tell you something right there.
04:10With that, let us take a look at the WBC top ten ratings
04:13in the super lightweight division.
04:15Despite not fighting at 140 pounds in over two years,
04:18Chavez has remained number one, and just two fights ago,
04:21he was humiliated by a journeyman named Willie Wise.
04:24And Chavez is not ranked in the top ten by any other major sanctioning body.
04:28Now, WBC president Jose Suleiman justifies Chavez's ranking
04:32by pointing out his legendary status among Mexican fans
04:35and his continuing box office appeal.
04:38That Chavez deserves to go out with honor and dignity.
04:41But, Bobby, is he taking Chavez's health and well-being into account?
04:46I don't know that he's taking his health and well-being into account,
04:48but clearly it does suggest that the WBC has an agenda.
04:52Their agenda for this fight is to give Julio Cesar Chavez
04:54something that he might not rightfully deserve.
04:57Again, a top ten ranking, I have no problem.
04:59Fighting for this title, I have no problem.
05:01Being number one mandatory, I'm sorry, it's borderline criminal.
05:04All right, for more on this debate,
05:06let's check in with our roving reporter, Jim Gray.
05:09Jim?
05:09All right, thank you very much, Steve.
05:11I am now joined by the WBC president, Jose Suleiman.
05:14Jose, let me ask you.
05:16Julio Cesar Chavez has not fought in this weight class
05:19in more than two years.
05:21He's lost two of his last five fights.
05:22He's not ranked by any other organization,
05:25yet you have made him the mandatory number one challenger.
05:27How can this be possible?
05:29Julio Cesar Chavez is a super lightweight.
05:33He has never been a welterweight.
05:35He only went off to fight Oscar de la Oya
05:38because that's his weight.
05:40But his authentic weight is super lightweight.
05:42He made it even three weeks before the fight today.
05:45But when people look and point to corruption
05:48and everything that is wrong with boxing,
05:50don't you agree that they point to instances like this?
05:54This is not corruption.
05:56This is justice.
05:57Why not?
05:57Because this is justice.
05:59We are fighting for justice.
06:00If you allow Suleiman, Thomas Harris, Leonard...
06:09Where was Julio Cesar Chavez traded with injustice?
06:12Where's the injustice here?
06:14Let me finish.
06:14The injustice is that it seems that they have picked Chavez
06:17only because he's a Mexican,
06:20not to have the right to fight for the title.
06:22He will show tonight that he has the right to the title.
06:25He hasn't fought in the division in two years.
06:27You are not asking these questions to the people
06:30about the fights when George Foreman, Larry Holmes,
06:36Leonard, Tommy Heron, Durant has fought.
06:38Why have you picked Chavez?
06:40A lot of people, Jose, are talking about.
06:43A lot of people are talking about tonight.
06:45The health and the well-being of Julio Cesar Chavez
06:47based on his last performance against Willie Wise
06:49when he quite honestly looked just awful.
06:52What responsibility will you and your organization take
06:55if something unfortunate should occur?
06:58Boxing is boxing.
07:00Anything can happen to anybody.
07:02We have put Julio Cesar Chavez and Constantine Sule
07:05to do the most thorough medical examinations.
07:08Both have passed them.
07:10Sule is a great champion,
07:13and Chavez has been one of the greatest of all time.
07:16Is that why he got to fight?
07:17Because of his past and nothing to do with the future?
07:20No.
07:20He still is one of the very best in the world,
07:23and if you can contend that he's not number one,
07:26nobody can compare with some sense of responsibility
07:29that he's not one of the best in the world.
07:32Well, he was one of the best.
07:33Jose, we appreciate it.
07:34We got some boxing to do tonight,
07:36but I think a lot of people would have a lot to contend
07:38with your statement.
07:39Thank you for your time.
07:40We'll talk to you after the fight.
07:41After the fight, somebody will be very proud,
07:44and someone will be in the environment.
07:45Maybe it'll be you.
07:46I hope that I will not be.
07:47All right, Steve.
07:48Over to you.
07:49Thank you, Jim.
07:50Well, things already heating up,
07:51and we haven't gotten to our first fight yet.
07:53Lost in the swirl of controversy,
07:55his dominant champion, Kostya Zhu,
07:56in his second defense of the title.
07:59Bobby, in your opinion,
08:00where does Sue rank in the 140-pound division?
08:02Arguably, Steve, right now, Zhu is number one at 140.
08:05Now, Charmbe Mitchell, Zab Judah, Teron Millett,
08:08and the newly crowned Ineer Julio
08:09may have something to say about that,
08:11and they may want to step up and be number one.
08:13But right now, Kostya Zhu has not only dominated him at 140,
08:16he has stopped all but one of the fights he's had at 140,
08:19knocking everybody out, destroying people,
08:21and he's maintained the reputation of being the guy to beat.
08:23What about Julio Cesar Chavez?
08:25Can the guy overcome age, ring wear,
08:28ineffectiveness to compete with Sue?
08:30You know, Steve, it's almost impossible
08:32to turn back the clock as far as he needs to turn it back.
08:35Vintage Chavez would be a great fight,
08:37and it would still be a competitive fight.
08:40I'm worried tonight that he's not even going to be competitive.
08:42He'll be more competitive than he was against Willie Wise,
08:44because I think Willie Wise clearly didn't train.
08:46He did nothing.
08:47Just figuring he could get by on his sheer ability.
08:49But tonight is a different thing.
08:50A young, strong, powerful 140-pounder
08:52is looking to do him some harm.
08:54A lot of people feel that no matter how much
08:56or how hard Chavez trained for this fight,
08:58it won't matter.
08:59We'll see.
09:00So it's Sue versus Chavez coming up later in our main event.
09:03But for openers,
09:03we've got another potential force in the 140-pound division.
09:07He's Hector Camacho Jr.,
09:08and he's coming up soon against former champion
09:11Philip Holliday of South Africa.
09:13And as usual,

09:51Once again, the web address is S-H-O dot com.
09:57Let's get to it.
09:58We close in on our first bout.
10:00Undefeated Hector Camacho Jr.
10:02defends his WBA North American super lightweight title
10:05against former world champion Philip Holliday,
10:07a matchup where speed could be the big difference
10:10in Camacho's favor.
10:13One of South Africa's most successful boxers ever,
10:17that's Philip Holliday.
10:18He won the IBF lightweight title in 95
10:20with six successful defenses
10:22before losing a decision to Shane Mosley in 97.
10:25Among his defenses, an early victory
10:27over three-time world champ Jeff Fennick,
10:29a convincing decision
10:30over previously unbeaten Ivan Robinson.
10:32He's 0-2-1 in the States,
10:34winless in three of his last five.
10:36You gotta wonder if the many battles
10:38have caught up to him as he's a pro since 91.
10:41Bobby, can Holliday turn back the clock?
10:43I mean, can he keep up
10:44with the lightning fast Camacho Jr.?
10:46You know, as we just talked about with Chavez a moment ago,
10:48Holliday's gonna need to turn back the clock,
10:49but not quite as far.
10:51He still has certain aspects of his style, Steve,
10:53that can give Camacho trouble
10:54and offset some of the speed.
10:55He's gonna need to crowd him,
10:56get inside, land to the body effectively,
10:59if he's gonna have any shot at winning this
11:00and pulling off the upset.
11:01As we stand by now for what should be
11:07a theatrical entrance for Hector Camacho Jr.,
11:10cue the band and get ready,
11:13because here we go.
11:15This whole glitzy, show-busy ring entrance stuff
11:19is really interesting because
11:20Hector Camacho Jr. told us yesterday
11:23this is not actually him.
11:24In other words, as you see him ride in
11:27as Emperor Napoleon on a makeshift horse,
11:31it's just for marketing purposes.
11:33Camacho Jr. has a little bit
11:35of that Hector Sr. flashiness,
11:37but he feels he's much different,
11:39approaches life more seriously,
11:41although that's hard to believe
11:42by looking at this.
11:43But he is a family man,
11:44even though he's just 21.
11:46Very humble outside the ring,
11:48likes to play basketball,
11:50do everyday things,
11:50but he's very hungry.
11:52He realizes he has big shoes to fill,
11:54having Hector Camacho Sr. as his father.
11:58Will he someday be considered
11:59better than his dad?
12:00That remains to be seen.
12:01But he's off to an impressive start.
12:04He's got good basic skills,
12:06outstanding straight left hand,
12:08very capable of the one-punch knockout.
12:11He may even have more power
12:13than people think.
12:15He's rated in the top ten
12:16by three of the major organizations,
12:18number one by the WPA.
12:20Bobby, where does this Southpaw stand
12:23overall in the talented 140-pound division?
12:27Is he ready for a title shot?
12:28Well, Steve, he's on the brink
12:29of a title shot,
12:30and being on the brink
12:31of a title shot,
12:31he's on the brink
12:32of possible superstardom.
12:34Should he beat one of these champions,
12:35a Teron Millett or a Zab Judah,
12:37the winner of that fight,
12:38or a Kashi Zou,
12:39he stands to be a real superstar.
12:41Now, he just adds to the list
12:42of the division,
12:43but what a division he is coming.
12:45A long wait for Philip Holliday
12:49as he waits for Camacho Jr.
12:51to get off his high horse.
12:53Well, I'll tell you what,
12:54he's on a high horse right now, Steve.
12:55It's kind of funny.
13:00Well, folks,
13:01all we can say is
13:02sit back, relax.
13:04Maybe it's a good time
13:05to grab something to eat.
13:09Take a load off your mind,
13:11because this may be a while.
13:12I don't think he's galloping.
13:13I think he's not cantering.
13:16He's not trotting.
13:17I think he's just walking it.
13:19Well, they talk about
13:19the high road to the low road
13:21and the fast,
13:21and it's the slow road,
13:22but I'll tell you what,
13:23it's a lot of show,
13:24but Camacho Jr.
13:25has some of the go-to-boot.
13:26It should be a great fight.
13:29What's your name?
13:30Come on, you're right.
13:31Hector Camacho Jr.
13:34looking to escape
13:35the shadow of his father
13:37who held titles
13:38in three different weight divisions.
13:43Jim Gray just passed on a note
13:45wondering if
13:46Hector Camacho Jr.
13:48will make some hay tonight.
13:50No comment.
13:55This is a good time
13:56for all the aspiring
13:58and would-be comedians
13:59in the audience
13:59to get their shots in.
14:01Well, let's see
14:02if he can get down
14:03off the horse.
14:05You can really hurt
14:06something doing that.
14:07I don't want to tell you,
14:08but I hope you get a real horse,
14:10but he couldn't get one in here.
14:11Well, bringing new meaning
14:14to reasons to wear
14:15an athletic cup for boxing.
14:18All right.
14:19Hector finally makes his way in.
14:21He hears it from the crowd.
14:26Somebody forgot to tell him,
14:27though, about Waterloo.
14:28I'll tell you what,
14:30it wasn't a good stand for
14:31the people wearing that hat.
14:35Thankfully, let's check the numbers
14:36as we go to the tail of the tape.
14:39At 21, Camacho Jr.
14:41is nine years younger than Holiday.
14:42The height and reach are almost even.
14:44Slight edge to Holiday.
14:46At yesterday's weigh-in,
14:47Holiday was actually under,
14:48as you can see, 138.
14:49Fight time waits.
14:50Camacho Jr., a plus 10 at 150.
14:53Holiday, 143.
14:55Just a plus five.
14:56Key rules, no standing eight,
14:58no three knockdown rule.
14:59A fighter cannot be saved
15:00by the belt any round.
15:01Accidental headbutt
15:02before the end of the fourth.
15:03It's a technical draw.
15:04At the end of the fourth,
15:05we go to the scorecards.
15:08So here at Veterans Memorial Coliseum
15:10in Phoenix, Arizona,
15:11I don't know if we're getting ready
15:12for a fight or the rodeo,

19:11Bobby, your keys to victory, please.
19:13Let's start, Steve,
19:15with Hector Camacho Junior.
19:16What he needs to do to win this fight.
19:18His overall speed is prevalent.
19:19He's got to do both hands and feet.
19:21Also,
19:22just quick and sharp counter plunges are deadly.
19:24And a new power,
19:25straight left hand.
19:29For Phillip Holiday,
19:30he's going to need to do some different things.
19:32He's going to have to keep the fresh running crowd,
19:33Camacho,
19:34not give him that room to work.
19:35Also,
19:35work the body.
19:36Weaken those legs,
19:37because he's quick on them.
19:38And he has a nice overhand right
19:39if he can connect.
19:43Holiday at his best,
19:44very talented boxer,
19:45kept a fast pace without work.
19:46His opponents has a good chin,
19:48not much punching power.
19:50Camacho Junior,
19:51a southpaw who may possess
19:52a little more pop than his pop,
19:53a little more macho than macho,
19:55and may be stronger than his father.
19:58Here we go.
19:59Round one scheduled for 12.
20:04There's that left hand right away.
20:06Camacho going right to that new power.
20:07He's found that straight left hand.
20:09A natural right-hander
20:12who had turned southpaw
20:13when he started boxing.
20:14Not many conventional fighters
20:16enjoy fighting southpaws,
20:18as Bobby Chez can attest to.
20:20They just come at you
20:21from different angles.
20:22Don't like them, Steve,
20:23especially the quick ones.
20:24They're really hard to deal with.
20:25Let them go.
20:25He watched tapes of Holiday.
20:27He knows he's busy.
20:28He keeps coming.
20:29He doesn't change.
20:30Says he's faster and stronger,
20:31though, Camacho.
20:32And he is looking to develop more power,
20:35especially with that straight left.
20:37But he's always learning.
20:38The crowd.
20:42See, Phillip Holiday can't stay that far outside, Steve.
20:44Camacho's so quick with his legs and his hands.
20:47He's going to get hit on the way in,
20:48and when he gets in,
20:49Camacho's not going to be there.
20:50And Holiday just got down with a straight left hand.
20:52Holiday normally is an inside-type fighter,
20:55while Camacho is an outside fighter.
20:57You heard the crowd's reaction
20:58to Holiday's tactics.
21:01Holiday said he didn't watch tapes
21:02of Camacho Jr.
21:03Says he never does watch tapes.
21:05He says we make our own fights.
21:08Hey, there are just two styles.
21:10As long as the trainer knows
21:11his opponent's strengths and weaknesses,
21:13he's happy.
21:14You know, I never agreed with that
21:15with fighters saying my trainer watched,
21:17and I just let him watch.
21:18He tells me what to do.
21:19I think a fighter should get a feel for his opponent,
21:21but he's more comfortable that way.
21:23We'll see.
21:23I would think it would be easier
21:25if the fighter himself saw the tapes.
21:30But he said his plan is to apply pressure
21:32from round one,
21:33which he is not doing.
21:34Tire Camacho Jr. out,
21:36slow him down,
21:37and that experience will go a long way
21:38in this fight.
21:39He doesn't want it to go the distance.
21:41Wants to stop Camacho Jr.
21:43He's not going to do it at this rate,
21:44and not let the judges decide,
21:46which would risk a hometown decision.
21:48Well, right now,
21:49he's not applying the pressure
21:50that he needs to do.
21:51He's not getting inside.
21:52He's not working the body.
21:53The overhand right has barely been thrown.
21:56And Holiday told us
21:56he's not concerned about
21:57the awkward southpaw style
21:59of Camacho Jr.
22:00He said 80% of the fighters
22:02in his gym back home
22:03are southpaws,
22:04so he's used to it.
22:05But I've been willing to bet
22:06very few are this quick.
22:13Holiday sees this
22:14as an extremely important fight.
22:16He wants to prove to himself
22:18and everyone
22:19that he's still got it
22:20and can win another title.
22:22He's a former lightweight champ.
22:24And while he does have
22:25three losses in his mind,
22:26he only has one real loss.
22:28That was a unanimous decision
22:29against Shane Mosley.
22:32He just walked into a nice,
22:33crisp right hook
22:34by Camacho Jr.
22:35And he's really not keeping
22:36the pressure on he needs to do.
22:38He's not shutting the gap down.
22:39And even when he comes in,
22:40he's not coming behind
22:41two or three jams.
22:42He needs to work his way in.
22:43He has to get there.
22:44He cannot fight
22:44from the outside.
22:45Final seconds of the opening round.
22:52Somewhat uneventful.
22:53Drawing Boone from the crowd.
22:55Interested spectators, the wife of Camacho Jr., Cielo Masonette, and daughter inserts of a seat.
23:13Somebody get her a chair, and she doesn't look too happy.
23:17Water.
23:29We have a round.
23:32We keep boxing, and when he comes to the front, to get the shot with you, we don't want it.
23:38You lunge, and you're trying too hard to get to his distance.
23:41Follow your jab, move to your left, follow your jab, and you get your distance right.
23:45And when you get your distance right, then you stick to it.
23:48That would be better, because he's trying to kind of punch you.
23:51Okay.
23:53Okay.
23:56The crowd expecting more fireworks from these two 140-pounders, especially Camacho Jr.,
24:01and now the referee, Tony Weeks, is putting Holiday and Camacho Jr. in neutral corners
24:06because there's too much moisture in Jr.'s corner.
24:09Try to do some housekeeping there.
24:13Okay.
24:14As this fight is held up momentarily.
24:20It'll be interesting to see if Camacho Jr. picks up the pace a little bit,
24:23because Holiday applied no pressure, gave him nothing to really worry about.
24:27He could pick and choose the spots to fight, to move, pace, everything he could do at his leisure.
24:32And you heard the instructions to Holiday.
24:36If you're a fight fan, you perhaps recognize Harold Albrecht, former Welderweight contender, a southpaw.
24:43In fact, he fought for the title once against Mark Freeland, right here on Showtime several years ago.
24:49He fought for the title twice.
24:51South African champion who made 19 defenses, so a lot of experience in that Holiday corner.
24:56Hector Camacho Jr. comes off a fourth-round knockout over Maynard Reid in June 18th.
25:08And that was a tremendous straight left hand, that level read of that fight.
25:14Hands for me, hands for me, don't hold him.
25:17Right now for this lighter weight, the pace is still pretty slow, even keel, not very fast.
25:22Camacho coming in, doing what he wants, when he wants.
25:25Holiday is giving him nothing to get the respect he needs, giving him nothing to worry about.
25:32Junior turned pro on the card that featured his father in the main event.
25:39Only the third time in modern history that a father and son fought on the same card as professionals.
25:44We have not been able to locate the Hector Sr. and the crown as of yet.
25:50Apparently he is not out here.
25:57Perhaps tied up in traffic because it's a good crowd on him.
26:03Well, the fans want more activity in the ring from these two junior welterweights, super lightweights, 140-pounders.
26:09And it's a little surprising as far as Camacho Jr. is concerned.
26:14Taking a little more time than we expected to rev up.
26:17Camacho's throwing a lot of one at a time right hooks, one at a time straight left hands.
26:21He's not really mixing it up, jab, jab, right hand hook, throwing uppercuts behind him.
26:25He isn't really working hard.
26:28Well, if there is a knock on him, it's that he at times fights a little too defensively.
26:33And we're seeing a little more of that than offense right now.
26:36He does tend to coast, but that's usually in the later rounds after building up a big lead.
26:44He does not like to fight on the inside.
26:47Which is where Holiday needs to be.
26:49Right.
26:55Another thing that's going to cause this fight to be long and ugly probably is the fact that every time they get close,
27:01Camacho just ties Holiday up just like that arm around him.
27:04Holiday wants to work inside, Camacho does not.
27:06And the crowd continues to voice it's disapproval.
27:07The crowd continues to voice it's disapproval.
27:25The WBA Super Lightweight Champion, very interested, putting thumbs down to Hector
27:51Camacho Jr., there could be a showdown between those two, Jr. is rated number one by the WBA
27:57Well, thus far, it's been a stinker
28:12As we get ready for round number three, Philip Holliday getting as much rest as possible there
28:19He's 30 years old, 9 years older than Camacho Jr., 36-3-1 with 21 knockouts
28:26You would think that Camacho might want to press him a little more
28:30Use his age against him, make him wear out himself early
28:34And, you know, he's not pressing the fight, he's not being impressive
28:37He's not making any statements so far
28:39Not at all with this big stage
28:44He's being showcased here as the co-feature to a huge event between Sue and Chavez with a lot of boxing luminaries in the crowd
28:53So I would think you'd really want to take it up to the next level
28:57Every once in a while one wonders when they get that label of a little too cautious
29:03Are they worried about protecting a semi-good chin?
29:06We haven't seen him really tagged, so we won't know
29:08Well, referee Tony Winks dashes in, it's an official knockdown
29:146, 7, 8
29:16Holliday got up quickly
29:18For Holliday, his third knockdown
29:21He stuffed that left cross right down the pipe, and Holliday didn't see it, wasn't that strong, caught more bounce
29:26Good quick shot
29:28Going the third time, he's been off his feet
29:30It happened in his fifth fight, which he came back to win by decision
29:34That was back in 92, and then in 97, against Pete Talofiero
29:38And he came back to win that fight by decision in 12
29:42You see what he just did there, he charged in, no jab, no punches
29:47Just lunging in, looking to get into Camacho and then start from
29:50He's got to work his way in, Camacho's not that foolish, he's launched too quick
29:54There's that vicious straight left hand that scores by Camacho Jr.
29:58So perhaps he's beginning to open it up a little more
30:03But Camacho Jr., for the most part, is performing in very deliberate fashion here
30:08Deliberate and still just a bit too defensive
30:13He's not worried about anything it appears, but yet he's fighting as if he's worried about it
30:18We're waiting to see that blinding speed we've heard so much about and seen on tapes
30:23Watch his head, watch his head
30:25Watch his head
30:27Watch his head
30:28Excellent movement, mobility and quickness
30:31He's a very personable young man, very engaging
30:38Hands free there, now hold him hands free
30:44Go hold him, go hold him
30:45Under 30 seconds remaining in round 3. It's scheduled for 12.
30:57And you hear the crowd's reaction once again.
31:01A little trickle of blood on the forehead of Philip Holliday.
31:05Looks like a scrape, not even a cut really. It looks like a scratch.
31:08There's that straight left hand by Camacho Jr., but not much power behind that one.
31:12Now, Holliday beginning to be a little more aggressive towards the end of the round.
31:22There's Mom, Hector's mother, Myra, Olivia, cheering on Jr.
31:29A fairly simple straight left cross.
31:41Holliday comes in a little slow.
31:42Camacho just leads right in with it.
31:44Catch him all bounced right on the button, but I don't think he had great footing under him.
31:49Holliday goes to the canvas.
31:50From another angle, right down the middle, right on the nose.
31:54We'll take one more look at it.
32:01Very simple. That left hand has been trying to land from the opening bell.
32:05Lands. Not a great big power shot, but effective.
32:08It's round four. Camacho Jr. certainly was flamboyant during his entrance.
32:26But once inside, he's been all of business.
32:31Nothing too flashy.
32:33See, there's a nice counter. Holliday came to the body with the right hand.
32:41Camacho fired a beautiful right hook and stopped and held.
32:44Inside, he's going to hold his hands. He doesn't want to fight on the inside.
32:47Does not like the inside action. Holliday needs to move his hands more on the way in
32:51and keep them moving. It'll be hard to have them held.
32:53I asked Kostya, too, yesterday, if he'd like a shot at Hector Camacho Jr.,
32:58perhaps en route to unification, he said he's in no hurry to fight Camacho Jr.,
33:04not because of anything that he's fearful of.
33:06It's just that Camacho Jr., he feels, is just not in his league as of yet.
33:10He's still learning. He's just 21.
33:12But he respects and admires the young man.
33:15I think that fight would be a genuine...
33:17You think they're booing now? It's going to be a genuine stinker to the great...
33:20A lot of power, Kostya Zou, and a lot of caution, Camacho Jr.
33:26And we're seeing that quite a bit here in this fight,
33:30and this is up against a South African fighter who's not known for his power.
33:34Yeah, not only is he moving up in weight, but he wasn't a big puncher at 135,
33:37now he's 140, clearly less of a puncher.
33:39Anthony!
33:40Holiday out of Benoni, South Africa, outside Johannesburg.
33:59He said it took him about 20 hours to get here,
34:01but he has not had great success fighting in the United States where he's 0-2-1.
34:06Camacho Jr., born in New York City, 112th Street,
34:10lived in the city until he was 12, moved to Orlando,
34:13now makes home in Carolina, Puerto Rico.
34:20Now it's Holiday pressing the attack and digging to the body.
34:23And he threw a nice straight right hand to the body, came up working,
34:26but again, he had to work his way in and keep throwing once he got there.
34:29Camacho got away, but he scored points and won the exchange.
34:32Camacho Jr. continues to be very cautious.
34:36Not taking any risks.
34:39I'll tell you what, Steve, it's too hot for 12 rounds of this.
34:42As mentioned in the open, 112 degrees outside,
34:46and it feels like it's about 100 inside.
34:50It sure does.
34:58Camacho Jr. told us he'd love to fight Julio Cesar Chavez
35:01if Chavez pulls off the upset later.
35:04His dad, of course, lost to Chavez.
35:09That's when Camacho was in decline and Chavez more in his prime.
35:12We did that fight at the Thomas and Mac Center in Las Vegas.
35:15In 1992, September.
35:18Good memory.
35:18It's around four of the books, and again, the crowd reacts.
35:26Boxing celebrities in this Phoenix crowd tonight.
35:30There's five-time world champion Sugar Ray Leonard.
35:34Like everyone else, curious to see what happens later
35:36between Costas Zoo and Julio Cesar Chavez.
35:39Listen, I want you out of the way.
35:40Very talented Fernando Vargas.
35:43Fans would love to see Trinidad Vargas.
35:45Michael Carvajal, former 108-pound champion,
35:49and the personable Danny Romero,
35:51former Junior Bantamweight champion from Albuquerque.
35:53Stay comfortable.
36:07Stay comfortable.
36:09Take it easy.
36:12Take it easy.
36:15He's doing good.
36:17John Rolano, our interpreter.
36:25Not much being said in that corner.
36:27His corner's telling him to take it easy.
36:29He couldn't take it too much easier than he's taking it.
36:30Telling you.
36:32Round five, scheduled for 12.
36:34This is called the WBA North American Junior Weatherway title,
36:37but of more significance.
36:39Camacho Jr. looking to maintain his number one ranking at the WBA.
36:45He's also rated number five, WBC number six,
36:47nine BF.
36:49Camacho Jr. came out throwing a big left hand,
36:51which was blocked.
36:52Holiday came back, pressed him.
36:53Camacho threw a counterpunch,
36:55but again, it was one counter.
36:56One and done seems to be the issue here.
36:59No one's really throwing good combinations on either side.
37:03Camacho Jr. back in 1996,
37:05lost in the opening round of the Olympic trials
37:08to a fellow by the name of Zab Judah.
37:11Zab on hand here tonight.
37:14We'll be chatting with Zab a little bit later
37:15and get his feelings on the main event.
37:17Because he could very well wind up in a showdown with Kostya Zou
37:21if Zou beats Chavez,
37:23which most people think will happen.
37:25Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
37:26Oh, there.
37:27One south of the border there.
37:30One point.
37:31Over here.
37:31Taking a point away.
37:32One point.
37:32Low blow here.
37:33One point.
37:34For the low blow.
37:35Keep him up.
37:36By Phil Holliday.
37:37You okay?
37:38Okay, here we go.
37:39Time in.
37:39I didn't hear too many warnings
37:40before that point got deducted.
37:42That's a no-nonsense type of judge.
37:45He went right to it.
37:47I didn't either.
37:48I don't think there was a warning.
37:51Now, hands free.
37:52Hands free.
37:52As he's pushed down WWF style
37:56by Camacho Jr.
37:58And raises his fist to the crowd.
38:01Crowd turning.
38:02All right, let's keep it clean now.
38:03Let's keep it clean.
38:04Here we go.
38:05Time in.
38:06Let's go.
38:07Tony Weeks trying to take charge.
38:12See right there,
38:12you saw how they ducked Bob,
38:14we threw no punches
38:15and tried to step in.
38:16Before he does that,
38:17he's going to get hit number one.
38:18Number two,
38:19Camacho can easily tie his hands up
38:20once he's on top of him.
38:26I got you.
38:26Bobby, is this just the experience
38:28of Philip Holliday
38:29or is it the fact that
38:30Camacho Jr. is being too defensive
38:32in his own right
38:32and too cautious?
38:34I don't think Holliday's experience
38:36is making one bit of a difference here.
38:37I think he's fighting a poor strategy
38:39going in the way he's going in
38:41and Camacho's just being too defensive.
38:43I think that's part of his nature,
38:44part of his style,
38:45and who he is.
38:45Well, Holliday's strengths
38:49over the years
38:50that he's been fighting
38:50for about nine years,
38:51quality of opposition,
38:52his work ethic,
38:53his dedication,
38:54his boxing ability,
38:55his chin,
38:56and his heart.
38:59His dad was his outpaw,
39:00obviously very quick,
39:01similar style,
39:02very defensive from time to time,
39:03good feet, good hands,
39:05but his dad
39:05would look to put more
39:06of a hurtin' on you
39:07all the time.
39:10I like that.
39:11But it's been few
39:16and far in between.
39:18Sometimes when fighters
39:18start getting knockouts
39:19with a certain punch
39:20or just start getting
39:21knockouts in general,
39:22they start to think
39:23themselves punchers
39:24and maybe
39:24after Camacho Jr.
39:26has in his head
39:26a mindset that
39:27he's more of a puncher
39:28than he really is.
39:29Interesting point
39:30because it has been
39:31one and done
39:32for the most part.
39:32He has been following
39:33punches up.
39:34He's been relying
39:39perhaps too much
39:40on that big left hand.
39:41Time, time.
39:42Here we go.
39:42Okay.
39:48Phillip,
39:49the referee was very
39:49unfair to take a point
39:51from you.
39:52He doesn't know
39:52what he's doing.
39:53You can see
39:54that's right,
39:55but he's got that's right.
39:56Don't let him put you off.
39:58Keep on what you know.
40:02We're going to take a look
40:03at that shot
40:03to go south of the border.
40:05He comes in
40:05with an uppercut.
40:06Not a real hard one,
40:07but both of them
40:08in unison.
40:10One, two.
40:11It was sort of a tag team.
40:12Two right uppercuts
40:13low.
40:14And here,
40:15Camacho Jr.
40:15takes a little wrestling
40:16and the accountant
40:17throws Holiday down.
40:19Little shoulder,
40:20little twist,
40:20little push.
40:25Now we'll see him
40:26where he does his best.
40:28Left hand.
40:29That's the left hand
40:29he's been working on,
40:30but again,
40:31one and done.
40:31He throws the one.
40:33He closes,
40:33but no real punches.
40:35No real punches.
40:36He needs his follow-up
40:37with a right hook
40:38and then an uppercut
40:39with another left hand.
40:41And then you may have heard
40:42in the Holiday Corner,
40:44his trainer,
40:44Harold Volbrecht,
40:45to tell Phillip
40:46he doesn't know
40:47what he's doing
40:48talking about
40:49Hector Camacho Jr.
40:54Let him go,
40:55let him go,
40:56let him go,
40:56let him go.
40:57Let him go.
40:57Let him go.
40:57Let him go.
40:57Let him go.
40:57Let him go.
40:58Round number six.
41:01One knockdown of the fight.
41:0353-second mark
41:04of round three
41:05from a straight left
41:06by Camacho Jr.
41:07as Holiday tasted
41:09the canvas
41:10for the third time
41:11in his career.
41:13This is 41st pro fight.
41:18Camacho Jr.
41:1928-0
41:20with 17 knockouts.
41:23Holiday 36-3-1,
41:2521 knockouts,
41:26former IBF
41:27lightweight champion,
41:28won the title
41:29on a 10th round TKO
41:30over a fighter
41:30named Miguel Julio
41:31in 95.
41:33Six successful defenses,
41:34lost the belt
41:35to Shane Mosley
41:36in 97
41:36via unanimous decision.
41:46Well, it's not a track beat.
41:50And the crowd
41:51lets the fighters
41:52know how they feel.
41:56And it looks like
41:57a good crowd.
41:59As they're getting ready
42:00for the big main event
42:01between Costas Zoo
42:02and Mexican legend
42:03Julio Cesar Chavez.
42:05Play seats
42:05better than 15,000.
42:07This used to be
42:08the home of the Phoenix Suns.
42:10And the crowd
42:11gives us an indication
42:12that they're a little bit
42:12of a rowdy bunch.
42:14And I'd say
42:14there's about 13,000
42:15of the 15-5 possible.
42:17And you know what?
42:18This fight
42:18isn't helping
42:19to get less rowdy.
42:19Give them up, baby.
42:21A very
42:21vociferous crowd,
42:23but they haven't had much
42:24to cheer about
42:24in this fight.
42:27But you'll hear them
42:28later,
42:29that's for sure,
42:30when Chavez
42:31makes his entrance.
42:33Oh, get up.
42:39Let him go.
42:39Let him go.
42:50So round six
42:51moves on.
42:52Again,
42:53uneventful.
42:57This is beyond
42:58uneventful.
42:59And I had trouble
43:00sleeping last night.
43:00If this was on,
43:01I'd have had no problem.
43:05You've got to be
43:06more honest,
43:06Bobby.
43:07I'll work on this.
43:08Don't hold that.
43:09Don't hold them.
43:10We approach
43:11the final 30 seconds
43:12of round six.
43:13Oh, ho, ho, ho.
43:17Time.
43:18Time.
43:19Now,
43:19Tony Weeks calls time
43:20because of the blood
43:23streaking down
43:24the right side
43:25of Holliday's face.
43:27Holliday claiming
43:28it was an elbow
43:28that clipped him
43:29across the eye.
43:30So he motioned
43:31to his corner
43:31into the referee.
43:32It was an elbow.
43:33It was an elbow.
43:33Yeah,
43:34it's outside
43:34the right eye,
43:35just above
43:35the right eye.
43:37That's in a bad spot
43:39because, of course,
43:40you can get into
43:40the eye
43:40and blur the vision.
43:41That's pretty nasty
43:42too.
43:43See,
43:43that's a deep cut.
43:44Robin McDougal,
43:45the ringside position,
43:48attending to
43:49Philip Holliday.
43:51That's a nasty one.
43:52Pretty deep too.
43:54Yeah,
43:54that's got some
43:55size too
43:55and some depth.
43:56Stopped just like
44:04it started,
44:04uneventful.
44:05And the family,
44:06the mom of
44:07Apector Camacho Jr.
44:09applauding.
44:12Yeah.
44:15Yeah.
44:17Well,
44:19huh,
44:19yeah.
44:20I get the distinct
44:21feeling, Steve,
44:22that nothing serious
44:23was accomplished
44:24here tonight
44:25with this fight.
44:25Yo,
44:26elbow.
44:27Yeah.
44:34So a very,
44:35very boring fight.
44:37Very disappointing
44:39opening fight here
44:40underneath Sue
44:41and Chavez.
44:42Not much offense
44:43from the normally
44:44offensive-minded
44:45and quick,
44:46flashy
44:47Hector Camacho Jr.
44:50And almost nothing
44:52from the experienced
44:53former lightweight champ
44:54Philip Holliday.
44:55He hardly offered
44:56anything up either.
44:58And you hear the crowd
44:59reacting to
45:00Hector Camacho Jr.,
45:02who's going to go back
45:03with another W
45:04to his record,
45:05but he's going to leave
45:06a sour taste
45:09in the mouths
45:11of many of these
45:11local fans
45:12here in Phoenix.
45:13Hector Camacho Jr.,
45:14and he's going to go back
45:14with another W
45:15to his record.
45:16He's going to go back
45:17with another W
45:17So we'll get the official
45:22word from Jimmy
45:25Leonard Jr.
45:26momentarily.
45:27Would you hit him with,
45:28Junior?
45:29Would you hit him with,
45:29right hand?
45:31Just to give you the rules
45:32of a fight is stopped
45:33by an accidental headbutt
45:34before the end of the
45:35fourth round.
45:36The fighters threw
45:36with a technical draw
45:37after the end of the
45:38fourth round.
45:38We were in the sixth.
45:40They go to the scorecards.
45:44Hector Camacho Jr.
45:48in front in the fight.
45:50No doubt about that.
45:52But an extremely boring fight.
45:56Perhaps we can get a chance
45:57to see exactly how
45:58the cut occurred.
46:01All right,
46:01what's going to happen?
46:02Haldick consistently is coming.
46:03He's coming down
46:03toward the body.
46:05And watch Camacho.
46:06What he does,
46:07he takes his elbow right here.
46:08Just kind of shoves it to him.
46:10And it runs right into
46:12Holiday's corner of his eye.
46:14You'll see he comes down.
46:16He's headed down.
46:17Elbow coming up.
46:19Bam.
46:20Right in the eye.
46:21And that may very well
46:22have been what split his eye
46:23wide open.
46:24So definitely accidental,
46:26unintentional.
46:27You see another look.
46:28Watch the elbow
46:29right in the eye.
46:31Although he did raise
46:32that elbow somewhat,
46:33but Holiday sort of
46:34just charged into it
46:35on his own.
46:36Yeah,
46:37I would clearly not
46:38think that was intentional.
46:39That was not intentional.
46:43Who do you want to fight
46:44for the title?
46:45So,
46:45that is it.
46:50I'm not sure
46:51what the delay is
46:52at this point.
46:53The final point.
46:54Philip Holiday,
46:55not a happy guy.
46:58Hector Camacho Jr.
46:59will take it any way he can.
47:02He's going to be 29-0.
47:04Unfortunately,
47:05he's had the makings
47:05of one of the
47:06uneventful fights of the year.
47:08And it wasn't shaping up
47:09to be a terrific fight at all.
47:10But I thought we'd see more
47:14offense out of
47:17Hector Camacho Jr.,
47:18and that he'd step up
47:19the attack
47:20and show everybody
47:21what he's all about.
47:24So somewhat
47:25disappointing there.
47:27Well,
47:27while we're waiting,
47:28coming up next,
47:29the much-debated
47:30main event.
47:32It'll be hard-hitting
47:32Kostya Zou
47:33versus six-time
47:34world champion
47:35Julio Cesar Chavez
47:36for the WBC
47:38Super Lightweight Championship.
47:42Dressing room
47:42of the champion,
47:43the man with
47:44the curious name,
47:45Kostya Zou,
47:46making final preparations
47:47for his second defense
47:48of the title.
47:49Born in Sarov, Russia
47:50in the Ural Mountains,
47:51son of a steel worker,
47:52former soldier,
47:53defected to Australia
47:54in 91 as an amateur,
47:56won a world championship.
47:58Brought his wife,
47:59Natasha,
47:59two sons,
48:00his mom and dad,
48:01to live in Sydney.
48:02Now an Australian citizen.
48:04Speaks perfect English
48:04with a Russian
48:06slash Aussie accent.
48:08And tonight could be
48:08the springboard
48:09to some big money
48:10high-profile
48:11unification showdowns.
48:15All right,
48:16we're ready for
48:17the final word.
48:17Let's get it up
48:18to Jimmy Lennon Jr.
48:21Ladies and gentlemen,
48:22this bout has been
48:23stopped at 2 minutes,
48:2435 seconds
48:25of round number 6.
48:27Bout has been stopped
48:28due to an accidental
48:30blow to the eye.
48:32Cut over Holiday's eye.
48:33He is unable to continue.
48:35Therefore,
48:35we go to the scorecards
48:37and score the bout,
48:38we have a unanimous
48:40technical decision.
48:42Judge at ringside,
48:43Ritchie scores
48:44the bout 57 to 55.
48:46Judges Harris and Kaiser
48:48both score the bout,
48:4959 to 53.
48:52All three in favor
48:53of the winner,
48:54still undefeated
48:56and still champion,
48:58Hector Macho
48:59Camacho Jr.
49:02So a tactical decision
49:07for Hector Camacho Jr.
49:10Once again,
49:10the crowd
49:11showing its displeasure
49:13with the effort
49:15put forth
49:16by Camacho Jr.
49:18He wins it on a cut
49:20in round number 6.
49:21A cut over the right eye
49:22of Phillip Holiday,
49:23the doctor
49:24recommending
49:25that the fight
49:27be stopped
49:27and that's exactly
49:28what they did.
49:29Let's get it up
49:32to Jim Gray.
49:33Jim.
49:33All right,
49:34thank you very much,
49:35Steve.
49:35Hector,
49:36the accidental elbow,
49:37what happened?
49:37He's coming in,
49:40but first I'd say
49:41a little message
49:41to Puerto Rico.
49:42Puerto Rico,
49:42get up,
49:43get up,
49:43get up,
49:43get up.
49:43Do your time.
49:45Actually,
49:46he came in,
49:47he's an awkward fighter,
49:48coming with his head.
49:49So I was trying to
49:49wait that hook,
49:50catch him,
49:50and it seemed like
49:51he came with his head
49:52a little bit too much,
49:52too low,
49:53and the hook just caught him.
49:54How would you assess
49:55your performance,
49:55the fans here?
49:56Not too thrilled,
49:57they're booing.
49:58You have looked very good
49:59in the past three fights.
50:00Was this simply a matter
50:01of styles,
50:01or was this not your best?
50:02First,
50:03I think the fan loves me.
50:04If I get on the ropes,
50:07he didn't come to fight,
50:09he came,
50:09you know,
50:09giving his all best,
50:10coming with whatever he got,
50:11head,
50:11bun,
50:12elbow,
50:12whichever.
50:13Where do you need
50:14to improve?
50:14What point do you have
50:16to work on to improve
50:17to be ready for
50:18Sean Bay Mitchell
50:18and to keep advancing?
50:20Sean Bay,
50:20I don't worry about Sean Bay.
50:21Sean Bay,
50:22you know,
50:22he's a champion,
50:23he'll take a title soon.
50:24I need to improve
50:25in all parts.
50:26I'm only 21 years old,
50:26I'm still a baby.
50:28Let's take a look here
50:28at the monitor,
50:29the knockdown in round three.
50:30Tell us about us,
50:31Hector.
50:32Well,
50:32I was trying to see
50:33what I was doing now
50:33was catching the jab
50:34as soon as he come in
50:35here with the straight left
50:36and you see
50:37it wasn't a hard shot
50:38because he caught me
50:38the same time with a jab
50:39but, you know,
50:40he kept on coming out
50:41on time
50:41with either the left
50:42or the right.
50:42He's an awkward fighter.
50:43Now here comes the elbow.
50:46What happened?
50:47All the time
50:47catching the hook.
50:48See,
50:48the hook was coming out.
50:50See,
50:50he came in too much
50:51of his head.
50:52That's what he'd been
50:52doing all day.
50:53So,
50:54that's what caused
50:54that one.
50:55And of course,
50:56the result was
50:56the ending of the fight
50:57and going to the scorecard.
50:58Sean Bay,
50:58come on in here.
51:00Do you think
51:00that Hector Macho
51:01Macho Jr.
51:02is ready for you?
51:04Hector,
51:04I think he's a young guy.
51:06You know,
51:07he needs to improve
51:07in some things.
51:08I think he will be
51:09a great champion
51:09like his father was
51:10but he's not ready for me.
51:12It's too many big things here.
51:14What did your dad tell you?
51:15What is your dad?
51:15How much advice
51:16has he given you
51:17and how much help
51:17has he been?
51:18I've probably been
51:18a big help.
51:19I mean,
51:20you know,
51:20as you see it is,
51:21the show,
51:21the mockability.
51:22I got everything
51:23that Sean Bay wants.
51:24It's junior time.
51:25You're going to ride off
51:26on your horse?
51:26Where are you going to
51:26ride that horse next?
51:27What's your next plan
51:28coming in on the horse?
51:29Where's he going
51:30to take you next?
51:30I had an open date
51:31for September 9th
51:32but Mr. Goosen here
51:33told me he wants
51:35to give him one more fight
51:36and then get in there
51:37and get his head
51:38knocked off.
51:39What are your plans?
51:40Tell Sean Bay
51:40to raise his hand
51:41and people cheer for him.
51:42My plans are
51:43whatever Dan Goosen
51:43got for me.
51:44I mean,
51:44I got the greatest promoter,
51:46the greatest match
51:47one of the time
51:47but I was up to them.
51:48Thanks, Chairman.
51:49Hey, listen,
51:49after those compliments,
51:50what else can I say?
51:51Who went to get
51:52a fight and who?
51:52We're going to have
51:53a Hector fight again
51:54in September
51:55and then we're going to
51:56look to try to get
51:56this mandatory fight
51:57with Sean Bay
51:58before the end of the year.
51:59We feel that it's going
52:00to be a tremendous fight
52:01since the beginning
52:02with Hector Camacho.
52:03Gentlemen,
52:04thank you.
52:04Hector, congratulations.
52:05Back to you, Steve.
