00:00It's right with the slight height advantage at five ten and a half an inch taller than Keith both fighters weighed in 153 and three quarters for right 154 pounds for Melling Mullings both fighters stepped on our scales today and you can see Keith Mullings gaining 15 pounds from the weigh-in till now with the fight about to commence Mullings owns a two inch reach advantage. All right it's time now to meet the fighters let's send it back over to Ed Lover. Thank you Fran. Ladies and gentlemen are you ready to meet the fighters.
00:30The first fight of this evening please give it up for Brooklyn's own Keith Mullings.
01:29Keith Mullings has only fought 23 times in his seven-year career but each of his last five fights has been a world championship battle. Definitely Kevin a tough customer.
01:43Definitely he's been to everything including Desert Storm. He's here tonight to take on Winky Wright. Another tough fight in his life. I tell you right now he has nothing to lose and a man in his position is very very dangerous for a guy like Winky Wright.
01:55Well Mullings told us yesterday he knows that this is perhaps his final chance.
02:04Okay ladies and gentlemen are you ready to meet the second fighter this evening. Please put your hands together for Ronald Winky Wright.
02:48This is Wright's second appearance on KO Nation and third total on HBO.
03:04His controversial loss to Fernando Vargas one year ago actually elevated his status
03:08and now Wright is a mandatory challenger hoping to get a shot at Felix Trinidad.
03:13While he's in line right now taking a dangerous fight like Keith Mullins who spoiled the hopes of Terry Norris when he's supposed to fight Oscar De La Hoya.
03:21So like I said, he's in the night with a big, big puncher and right now, tonight, I'm sure that Winky Wright right now is looking to show us and show the world that he's ready for Trinidad.
03:29All right, Kevin, let's send it up to Ed Lover for the official introductions.
03:32Okay, ladies and gentlemen, our first bout of this evening is 12 rounds of action in the junior middleweight division.
03:40First, let's meet our judges from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dana DePaulo.
03:50From Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, George Hill.
03:56And also from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Adelaide Triplett.
04:01Our referee in charge of the action, Ernie Sharif.
04:05Now, ladies and gentlemen, let's meet the principals.
04:11First, fighting out of the blue corner.
04:13He weighed in at 154 pounds.
04:16He brings it to the ring.
04:17A record of 16 wins, six losses, one draw, and 11 wins coming by knockout.
04:23Please give it up for him.
04:25From Brooklyn, New York, Keith Mullins.
04:28His opponent, fighting out of the red corner.
04:35He weighed in at 153 and three-quarter pounds.
04:38He brings it to the ring.
04:39A record of 40 wins, three losses, and 24 of those wins coming by knockout.
04:44From St. Petersburg, Florida.
04:46Please give it up for Ronald Wickey Wright.
05:06Center the ring.
05:09They gotta be clean.
05:10They gotta be clean.
05:11Sit down.
05:12Let's go.
05:14Let's go.
05:16Let's go.
05:18All right.
05:20Let's go.
05:22Come on.
05:24I gave you the instructions in the dressing rooms.
05:26I want you to obey my commands at all times.
05:28Protect yourself at all times.
05:30Do you have any questions?
05:32Have any questions?
05:34Keep it real. Keep it fair.
05:36Come out and fight. Good fight.
05:38Let's go.
05:40Take a look and see who our Internet audience thinks
05:42will win the fight.
05:4469% to 31.
05:46Our fans watching believe Winky Wright should handle
05:48Keith Mullings.
05:50Mullings is key.
05:52He will try to get inside the long jab of the southpaw.
05:54Ronald Winky Wright.
05:56We're underway.
05:58The first of 12 between Mullings and Wright.
06:00Well, one thing that Mullings did right away
06:02is do a straight right hand at Wright.
06:04And that's what he has to do tonight.
06:06But he has to do it off a jab to be effective.
06:08In the corner. Get the belts.
06:10I won.
06:12Like I said, there he goes to the body right away.
06:14He's got to implement that right away.
06:16Body attack. Body attack.
06:18Because Wright is very quick, very tall, and very long.
06:20And I tell you, he can keep you at the end of that reach
06:22all night long.
06:24The last two times we've seen Winky Wright,
06:26he took on Fernando Vargas a year ago
06:30and lost a very controversial split decision.
06:34I thought he won that plan.
06:36I really thought he won that fight.
06:38And he's back on trail.
06:40I tell you, he didn't let it discourage him at all.
06:42And also, or check that it was a majority decision.
06:46And also, then he fought Bronco McCart in September.
06:52That was the unanimous decision victory for Winky Wright.
06:56His style, normally, is to stay outside and work the jab.
07:01But in both of those fights,
07:02Winky elected to stand right in front of his opponents,
07:05Vargas and McCart, and bang.
07:08Well, the big thing is he probably had the advantage on Vargas.
07:11He probably had the advantage.
07:13You know, a few times, a few fights,
07:15he's laid in the pocket, as we call it in the box,
07:17he's laid on the inside to exchange.
07:20We told you about Wright's injured left wrist
07:23in sparring about three weeks ago.
07:27Thought about pulling out of the fight,
07:29but then realized he claims
07:33he might not have had another CV date anytime soon.
07:36Didn't want to pass up the opportunity
07:38to showcase his skills to the American public.
07:41One dangerous thing Wright is doing right now,
07:43he's staying right in front of Mullings.
07:45He's not being fleet-footed like he usually is,
07:47utilizing the jab a lot better, more effective,
07:49and keeping Mullings on the outside.
07:51Mullings is getting on the inside and landing punches.
07:55Winky Wright has only unleashed his left hand
07:59twice so far in the first round.
08:03He told us it wouldn't have an effect on him mentally.
08:05You disagreed at the beginning of the show,
08:07and so far, Winky Wright not letting his left hand go.
08:11Well, the big thing, like I said,
08:13when he throws it, he's got to make it count.
08:15Because if you're going to injure it,
08:16he don't want to injure it this early in a fight.
08:18He'd rather do it around 8-9 if he has a comfortable lead.
08:29Keith Mullings has never been knocked down in his career.
08:32He's lost six times, four of those losses
08:34coming on split decisions.
08:36And if you ask Mullings,
08:38he says he was robbed in most of them.
08:40When I talked to Winky Wright earlier,
08:44he explained that he would like to get a knockout tonight.
08:46Mullings doing work to the body
08:49as the first round comes to a close.
08:51He should jab a little more, though.
08:52He should jab a little more, though.
09:01He should jab a little more now.
09:03I heard on that last one.
09:04I know you did.
09:05Breathe.
09:06Breathe.
09:07All right, we need to work the jab more, Winky.
09:08Let the left hand go.
09:09Throw combinations.
09:10All right?
09:11If you're going to load up on the last punch,
09:12you need more punches.
09:13The round was close.
09:14The round was close.
09:15The round was close.
09:16The round was close.
09:17I'm just kidding.
09:18The round was close.
09:19The round was close.
09:23Come here, Mike.
09:26Deliver that right hand.
09:28Step over and hit it with that left hook.
09:30All right.
09:31You know what I'm saying?
09:33You know what it is, don't you?
09:34Mm-hmm.
09:35OK, then.
09:35All right.
09:36Let's see, pull it off on me, OK?
09:38Straighten by your hand, step over and hit it with the left hook.
09:41He's open for it.
09:42OK?
09:46Second's out.
09:47Let's roll.
09:48Second's out.
09:49Come on, Chad.
09:50Second's out.
09:51Second's out, baby.
09:52Let's roll, Chad.
09:53Inside both corners.
09:55You heard Dan Birmingham, the trainer for Winky Wright,
09:59ask his fighter to let go of that left hand.
10:05Kevin, you say that you'll be able to tell if, in fact,
10:10Winky Wright injures his left hand during this foul.
10:14But you only, you only, you know, most of the time,
10:17usually, as they say, a fighter shows you some sign of discomfort
10:21when he hurts his hand.
10:22And, uh, right, I think, is no different.
10:26I believe when he hurts that hand, we will know about it.
10:29He'll stop utilizing it as much as utilizing it right now.
10:32He'll start picking his punches with his right jab and his right hook.
10:36Um, Mullins has given him the opportunity to throw it by staying in front of him,
10:41but, uh, he's not even punching to the soft tissue area like the body.
10:45The first round indicative of both fighters' styles.
10:48Wright connecting.
10:49Eight of his 12 shots that landed were jabs.
10:52Meanwhile, Mullins, seven of his eight that landed power shots.
10:57Both fighters sticking to the strip.
11:00Wright unloads with a right hook and comes back,
11:03doubles up with a right hand, an uppercut, and a hook,
11:05and now he lets the left hand go.
11:07I really thought Wright would be on the outside trying to box Mullins.
11:11Instead, he's, uh, inviting Mullins in.
11:13He's fighting Mullins' fight.
11:14That's giving Mullins a lot of opportunities.
11:16The last time we saw this was Terry Norris
11:20when, uh, Mullins won his world title.
11:26Wright listening to the advice of his corner.
11:29Getting more comfortable, settling in, popping that jab.
11:41Big right hook that time.
11:42Another one to the head of Keith Mullins,
11:44and one more for good measure.
11:48Wright have to watch out. Mullins can punch.
11:56Keith Mullins makes it very easy for you to find him.
12:00He's not gonna run.
12:02Being the shorter fighter, he has to get inside.
12:04So Mullins stalking his way.
12:08Well, you gotta blame Wright for some of it.
12:10He's allowing Mullins to walk in, get his punches off,
12:13and then he's throwing his own.
12:14He's taking more of a risk.
12:15And he could be on the outside utilizing a jab.
12:21Wright rips off a shot to the midsection.
12:23Fires a strong one-two.
12:27Winky Wright, strong right-hand counter.
12:37And rips off another one-two combination
12:39to the head of Keith Mullins.
12:41Winky Wright definitely busier in the second round.
12:43Good job, good job.
12:44Wait, give me the answer.
12:49Good job.
12:53All right, give me the answer.
13:00Give that back to the series, we'll finish and watch now, OK?
13:06All right, boss man, get that left hook in motion.
13:09He's giving you that left hook, OK, man?
13:11You're catching that jab, all right?
13:13When you catch that jab, turn your left hook forward.
13:16You see what I mean?
13:17All right?
13:18All right?
13:19When you catch that jab, turn your left hook forward.
13:20You see what I mean?
13:21All right?
13:23Because his camera is right here now, a little lower.
13:26All right?
13:27Well, he's shoulder guarding on that side too.
13:29Yeah.
13:30How's that work there?
13:31Come on.
13:32Deep breath.
13:33You there?
13:34OK.
13:35OK, then you put there.
13:36But stay close to him there.
13:37You see what I mean?
13:38You're doing that shoulder guard.
13:39Yeah.
13:40Yeah.
13:41Free.
13:42Hey, good work, man.
13:43Good work.
13:44I know you.
13:45Keep the pace.
13:46Keep the pace.
13:47Keep the pace.
13:48Keep the pace.
13:49Right jab.
13:50Left hand, straight, crisp on the punches, but not back to the jab.
13:54Hey!
13:55Winky Wright trying to capitalize on the momentum he built in the second round.
14:10Keith Mullings hasn't fought in 16 months.
14:13His last bout with the championship match against David Reed.
14:18Reed won a unanimous decision.
14:20Mullings disputing whether...
14:23Winky Wright.
14:24A three-punch combination there.
14:26Mullings disputing whether that decision was accurate.
14:30Yet it soundly looked like Reed controlled that fight by staying on the outside.
14:37Wright's doing some peculiar things here.
14:39He's stepping right into the right hand of Mullings.
14:41And Mullings is not throwing a straight right hand like most lefties get hit with.
14:45When he throws it, he lands it.
14:46But when he's not throwing it, he's stepping right in front of it.
14:49He's throwing a straight right hand.
14:51And all that ring rush you talked about, Fran, you know, Mullings is allowed to shake it.
14:58Mullen's trying to do work inside.
15:03Wright doing a good job of blocking most of those shots.
15:06Wright loads up for a right uppercut.
15:08Comes back with a left hook to the head.
15:13Mullen's doing something that's very dangerous for Wright.
15:18He's leaning forward with his head.
15:20And if he hits the top of the head with that left hand, he can refraction that wrist.
15:30Winky Wright.
15:32A mandatory challenger for Felix Trinidad.
15:36Not sure if or when he will actually get the opportunity to fight Trinidad.
15:41But he clearly understands the stronger performances that he has will make that fight more enticing.
15:51The public will demand to see it.
15:53It would definitely enhance his chances of it happening, of happening.
15:56But the one thing that he can't make a mistake is do is stand in front of this man, Trinidad,
16:00like he's standing in front of Keith Mullings.
16:03Wright working the jab, Mullings firing off power punches.
16:08Both of those shots from Mullings blocked by Wright.
16:21Wright probably does not feel threatened by Mullings.
16:24Uh, punching power while letting him on the inside.
16:26That's why allowing him on the inside.
16:28Now he's tactically boxing him.
16:30Left and right movement.
16:32Good jab.
16:33He's keeping Mullings with an empty jab like I said earlier.
16:35And that's where Mullings got to be all night.
16:37Mullings has his moments.
16:38He gets on the inside.
16:39But they're too few infrequent.
16:40Both fighters, former world champions, trying to elevate their status back to a higher stage.
16:54All right.
16:55Stay in that rhythm.
16:56Fly for them and let them come inside.
16:57Stay in your rhythm.
16:58Stay in your rhythm like you did the first minute.
16:59I can't touch you then.
17:00Yeah.
17:01Stay in your rhythm, punch and turn them is all you got to do.
17:02Take that body whenever you can.
17:03You need to water on the hand, man.
17:04His water, his head is hot.
17:05You need to water on top of his head.
17:06Use that faint.
17:07Use that faint.
17:08Use that faint.
17:09That faint is working for you.
17:10All right.
17:11Yeah.
17:12You know what?
17:13Well, that's the truth.
17:14That's the truth.
17:15No word.
17:16All right, now, boss, man.
17:17I got you.
17:18Push it in.
17:19Take that body.
17:20Take that body whenever you can.
17:21Take that body whenever you can.
17:22You need to water on the hand, man.
17:23His water, his head is hot.
17:24You need to water on top of his head.
17:25Use that faint.
17:26Use that faint.
17:27Use that faint.
17:28That faint.
17:29That faint is working for you.
17:30Come back.
17:31That is not working.
17:36Sure.
17:37You can't wait too long.
17:38All right.
17:39You know what?
17:40That's the truth.
17:41That's the truth.
17:42No word.
17:43All right, now, boss, man.
17:44Push it in.
17:45Push it in.
17:46All right.
17:47Come on.
17:48Sit down.
17:49Come on.
17:50Look at that.
17:51That's the word.
17:52Come on.
17:57Let's bring in now unofficial ringside scorer.
17:59ringside scorer Julie Letterman to see how she has it through three Julie Fran I've got this two
18:03rounds to one 29 28 for Winky Wright you know in the first round Keith Mullins was able to land
18:08those crisp body shots while Winky Wright would just stick his arm out just to measure him now
18:12Winky's got his movement going moving side to side staying away from Keith Mullins right hand
18:17like right there we see Keith Mullins lunging because Winky Wright is on the move in the third
18:22round right firing 70 punches landing on a connect rate of 39 percent meanwhile Mullins
18:29through 49 punches but landed just eight and now Winky Wright trying to get off the center of the
18:37ring showing more movement than he did in the previous rounds definitely getting loose
18:41this is what kind of fight I thought it was going to be from the first round I guess
18:46Winky Wright went to see what Mullins had early it's very dangerous tactics but it worked out
18:51now he's back on board with his feet dancing around sticking and moving one thing about Mullins
18:58he's very tough one of his good friends light heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr. spent about
19:06six years sparring with Jones Jones has nothing but nice things to say about Mullins boxing skills
19:14I think that Mullins should be used to this kind of speed it's kind of reflexes
19:19um snappy jabby jabby she's not how to get inside he's pretty sure he had to do it in the joint Roy
19:23but he's not effectively doing it here tonight
19:26right showing a little bit more speed than Mullins seems to have a half step advantage
19:36Mullins is sitting by the wayside waiting for Wright to stop so he can hit him
19:43that's not going to happen he has to slow down right like he did in the first round
19:46with effective body punching if he doesn't go to the body right will do the next eight rounds
19:53right with a low blow right there acknowledging it
19:59both fighters continue on this isn't the first time that Winky Wright has stepped into a ring
20:06with an injury when he fought Vargas he said he had a fractured right thumb
20:11and that was the main reason why he decided to stand toe to toe
20:16because he figured he couldn't utilize his jab effectively because of the injury
20:20he's got an incredible jab with you right I gotta give him two rules on that
20:24I think that his jab is his most effective weapon
20:27it's so crisp and so straight very sharp jab
20:31seems to be getting back to the style
20:33that he grew up with fighting which is movement
20:36and utilizing his jab
20:39as they say what got you there is going to keep you there
20:42and he's getting back to it
20:44Mullins in all right
20:52come on fight
20:53Mullins jab mouse at the end of the fourth
20:56as you watch today's fights log on to hbo.com slash ko nation and choose paul spadafora's walkout sound
21:12knockout Raquel baldwin firing up the laurence center crowd
21:25from davenport iowa formerly a new york city next dancer
21:30all right let's go
21:46come on wanker come on wanker
21:49four rounds in kevin it seems that riot is controlling the tempo of the fight
21:55what does keith mullins need to do to turn things more into his favor
21:59okay he's got to get on the inside but he's got to do that over a jab
22:03right now he's getting inside slides in when right throws a jab
22:06block shoot his own jab fall in and punch to the body
22:09right now right has good legs he's on the ball to his feet
22:13he's moving around
22:15also another thing that mullins not doing that julie we talked about
22:18is he's not cutting the ring off
22:20he's got to cut the ring off
22:21he's got to stop that movement of right
22:23and he's not doing that he's just following right around the ring
22:26and right's going to oblige him by he's hitting with the jab all day
22:29right was a fighter that not many people knew much about
22:37his first 16 fights
22:39hailed at his home state of florida
22:41he was 16 and a lot of knockouts
22:43since then he's fought 20 fights overseas
22:48just now people starting to get a good look at winky wright
22:56another major obstacle that mullins has to overcome
22:59he's fighting a southpaw he's got those straight right hands
23:02he has to get his left foot outside of winky wright's right foot
23:05that's another problem that he's having
23:07we'll talk more about that when our main event
23:09mullins right now is stepping right in front of winky wright's left hand
23:21mullins now trying to get off
23:33mullins needs to stay in range like he just did
23:42don't step away from wright
23:44every time he steps away he loses his range
23:46and then he's got to make up his difference
23:47and wright is not allowing him to just walk in
23:50you can tell both of these fighters are in excellent condition
23:56for pretty much his entire career wright
23:58has fought at about 150 54 55 pounds
24:03he's got great hand speed at the straight class
24:09connects to mullins on the head
24:11and now wright senses he can do some damage
24:14mullins up against the ropes and wright now trying to get off
24:20a wright hook to the body from winky wright
24:25mullins steadies the shit
24:30pushes the action back into the center of the ring
24:33and goes to work on wright's body
24:36mullins still dangerous you have to watch out
24:43don't open up too wide you go for the attack
24:45mullins will throw a hook
24:46we could be in for the long haul between rinky wright
24:50and keith mullins both of these fighters very difficult to knock down
24:54and clear these questions
25:09give me water
25:13you gotta get your left hook in motion
25:16that's what i want you to do
25:18your left hook have gotta get in motion
25:20I bet you're moving to your right now, okay?
25:24You're moving into his power so that you can hit him
25:26with the right hand and come back to the left wall.
25:28Got to go.
25:29You know, the way to fight him.
25:30Here's the puncher.
25:33Here's the puncher.
25:34Right corner.
25:35It looked like it buckled him a little bit.
25:37Overhand right.
25:38Sam overhand right.
25:39Catches him with it.
25:40Looks like Mullins might have been in trouble,
25:42just maybe going down from the shot.
25:47Mullins rocked a little bit,
25:48but definitely steadied his legs,
25:50and he came right back out.
25:51Come on.
26:02The key to Winky Wright's arsenal is very fast.
26:08Right jab.
26:10Throughout the fight, Mullins has been catching
26:13plenty of right jabs.
26:15Right landing, 66.
26:17Mullins just three jabs.
26:21Well, if Mullins is waiting for Wright to slow down
26:23and stop so he can be hit, it's never going to happen.
26:26Mullins has to take the initiative and slow down Wright.
26:29Cut the ring off.
26:30Throw his jab.
26:31Hit to the body.
26:32Well, he's going to be chasing Wright all night long like this
26:34if he doesn't do it, take affirmative action
26:36and do it right away.
26:37It's a problem that he had against David Reed.
26:40It's also a problem that he had in his fight before that
26:44with Jorge Castillo where he lost his world championship
26:49back in January of 99.
26:51Some fighters just can't hit a mover.
26:53Sometimes fighters have that problem.
26:55Now we got a quick mover.
26:57He's very fast.
26:58And he's lefty at that.
26:59Right.
27:00Doubling up with one-twos.
27:04So far, absolutely no problems for Winky Wright with his left wrist.
27:19He's going to collapse Mullins with a right hand.
27:31Like me and Julie said earlier, Mullins is just following him around.
27:34He's not cutting the ring off, taking the angle, taking the initiative.
27:38He's not jabbing his way in.
27:40I don't know when he's going to try to implement his attack
27:42if we're halfway through this fight.
27:43And he's doing the same thing.
27:45Mullins understands at 32 years of age, he'll be 33 next month,
27:59that he won't get that many more opportunities
28:07to have a chance to take on some of the elite competition in the division.
28:13Yet he cannot find a way to combat the quicker Winky Wright.
28:20But he's not fighting like a man that's in desperation,
28:22a man that really needs a win here.
28:24He's, like, going with the flow, going with the action,
28:26allowing Wright to do what he wants to do.
28:28And Wright is doing a very good job at it, too.
28:36Wright continues to pop his jab.
28:38You get the sense, Kevin, that Winky feels he's in complete control.
28:43He can do pretty much anything that he wants.
28:45Oh, he is in control.
28:46You can believe that.
28:47He is definitely in control.
28:48On December 20th at 9 p.m., Sports of the 20th Century presents
29:01Playing the Field, Sports and Sex in America, a documentary that explores how sexes influence the world of sports.
29:16There are some fighters in that special as well.
29:31Every sport is affected by sex, including boxing.
29:33Mostly boxing.
29:34Come on, now.
29:36After your points, push him back.
29:38Don't step back.
29:39He's getting tired because you're making him more corner than you want.
29:42Come on.
29:43Take that off.
29:44Come on, baby.
29:45Let's go.
29:46Come on.
29:47Boss.
29:48Let's go.
29:49Let's go.
29:50Let's go.
29:51Let's go.
29:52Let's go.
29:53Step back, Wright.
29:55Couple of that too far as you see it.
29:56Fight!
30:00Halfway through this 12-round bout between junior middleweights Ronald Winky Wright and Keith Mullins.
30:12Wright looks so relaxed, so comfortable right now.
30:14He's jabbing when he feels like it.
30:16He's punching him because he's got his hands a little bit lower, taking a little more risk,
30:20a little more chances.
30:21Mullins right now is implementing the same thing he did the last round.
30:26He's just following right around.
30:28One thing I've learned from both you and Julie, both of you say styles make fights,
30:32and certainly the style of these two fighters plays completely into the favor of Winky Wright.
30:38Oh, yeah.
30:39You know, it could be a competitive fight, a more competitive fight if Mullins was doing
30:43the things that he's supposed to be doing by cutting the ring off and punching to the body,
30:47rather than lunging like he just did at Winky Wright.
30:50Right on the other hand is the outside boxer, quick movement, quick hands, fast feet,
30:54and he's doing what he's supposed to do.
30:56And the early going, Wright stood pretty much toe-to-toe with Mullins, almost to say,
31:05let me see what you got.
31:06Hit me with what you have, and let me see if I can take it.
31:09Very dangerous tactic.
31:10A lot of fighters have done that.
31:11They've been knocked out in the first round.
31:13But since then, it seems as if he's realized his best fight is to enforce a movement.
31:19It's very strange, you know, you don't want to make those assumptions.
31:23Go in there and find out what he's got.
31:24You find out what he's got, it's hard.
31:26He knocks you out.
31:27Could have dynamite in there, huh?
31:28You never know.
31:29You never find out.
31:30Hey, don't open up Padera's box unless you have to.
31:32It seems every time Mullins gets inside, he can't let his hands go quick enough.
31:50Doesn't really seem to be connecting on the body punches.
31:54Yeah, they just want two punches.
31:56You know, Wright's blocking half the punch with a ball.
31:59He's got good defense.
32:00Now he comes back.
32:02You know, he lets Mullins get his little punches off.
32:05You know, he gets Mullins a little confident.
32:07Then he tries to hit him again.
32:09Wright is finding a right tactical fight.
32:11Mullins right now is trying to find himself a tactical fight instead of making one of his own.
32:16Winky Wright right now unloading a number of straight right-hand jabs and left hands to the head,
32:24trying to break through the defense of Keith Mullins.
32:29Mullins has abandoned the jab, loading, leaping, reaching.
32:34You never gonna get the right like that.
32:36Never.
32:38A very clean fight as we head to the close in the seventh round.
32:44Both fighters acting in a very professional manner.
32:47But it's Winky Wright who is certainly getting the best of Keith Mullins.
32:52All right, all right.
32:53Relax.
32:54Breathe.
32:55Breathe.
32:56Breathe.
32:57Breathe.
32:58Good round.
32:59Good round.
33:00Good round.
33:01Good round.
33:02Good round.
33:03Just keep boxing.
33:04Keep boxing.
33:05Jab, jab.
33:06Underneath.
33:07Rip underneath, Winky.
33:08That move.
33:09You letting your hands in.
33:10I knew his head.
33:11You're dropping your hands.
33:12Well, here you guys, Winky Wright, doing a lot of good overhand punches, straight punches.
33:27I mean, he's doing it all night.
33:28Mullins is standing right in front of him.
33:30I see Wright throwing the overhand left, underneath, over.
33:33He's doing whatever he wants to do.
33:34He's actually creating his combinations as he's throwing them.
33:37They go that jab again.
33:38He's utilizing the jab.
33:39These are uppercuts underneath.
33:41There's not much that he hasn't done to Mullins.
33:44Winky Wright told us that yesterday he was gonna go to the head instead of the body
33:52because of the injury to his left wrist, and he's following the script.
33:57Let's bring in Julie Letterman through seven rounds.
34:00Julie?
34:01France, 6-1, 69-64, Winky Wright.
34:04You know, you hit it right on the nose.
34:06Styles makes fights, and Keith Mullins cannot fight his southpaw.
34:09He keeps Winky Wright moving.
34:11Jab, jab, right hand, left hand.
34:13Beautiful, beautiful combinations, and then Keith Mullins leads and winds up hitting Winky Wright
34:17in the back.
34:18Beautiful fight for Winky Wright using his southpaw advantage.
34:21Like Julie said, the boxer is beating the slugger right here.
34:27Mullins is the slugger.
34:29Wright's the boxer.
34:30He's outboxing Mullins.
34:31He's not making it into a wall like he did the first round.
34:34He's not allowing Mullins to have the opportunities that he had in the first round.
34:38Mullins has to make the opportunities happen for himself, and he's not doing that.
34:41Kevin, explain the strategy by Wright.
34:44Him saying he's gonna go to the head if the wrist is bothering him
34:48as opposed to using his left hand to go to the body.
34:52I guess he feels that, you know, when you go to the body, that's a commitment punch.
34:56You make a total commitment punching to the body, which leaves you wide open.
35:00And I believe he's going to the head and taking a risk of the hand
35:03because he knows he outfeeds him.
35:05He's got the reach on him with the jab.
35:07So I can only figure that.
35:08But my strategy would be punch the shoulders.
35:10You don't have to hit the stomach.
35:12You can punch the shoulders.
35:13You can punch the arms.
35:14You can punch anything that's a soft area rather than hit the head.
35:19Nice.
35:31Nice.
35:32Winky Wright slips.
35:34That is not a knock down.
35:38Hey.
35:39Referee Ernie Sheriff wiped off the gloves and says, let's go.
35:44So you hit whatever man gets you.
35:46He can't get you. You don't have to hit the face.
35:48You can punch the arms. You can punch the chest area.
35:51Punch the shoulders. Bring his arms down.
35:54So, you know, Winky Wright has options here.
35:57You know, he don't have to punch him in the head.
35:59The forehead, first of all, is the hardest part to punch.
36:02You can break your hand like that.
36:04So, Winky Wright's finding a very tactically smart fight right now.
36:07Does it almost look like a sparring session, Kevin?
36:10For Wright, it does.
36:11I don't know if I'm not for Mullings.
36:13For Wright, it does.
36:14Take a step back.
36:16Fight!
36:24Mullins is trying to get there,
36:25and Wright is just doing what he wants to do naturally.
36:27I mean, look at his hands. His hands are down.
36:29He's feeling really good about what he's doing.
36:31He feels he's effectively winning this fight,
36:33doing combinations. He's stepping around.
36:35He's stepping into the right hand of Mullins.
36:37I don't think he believes that Mullins can hurt him
36:39at this point of the fight.
36:41Hey, watch the question.
36:43Winky Wright simply too quick for Keith Mullins.
36:48Putting on a clinic.
36:49Accidental, come on, come on.
36:50Right complaining of a headbutt for both fighters.
36:53Accidental!
36:54Acknowledging the situation.
36:56All right. Come on. Come on.
36:58Come on.
36:59That's accidental butt that last one.
37:02Come on.
37:03You ain't got a mark on you anywhere.
37:05Freeze. Freeze. Freeze. Freeze.
37:07I got a headache now.
37:08Do ya?
37:09All right.
37:10Shake it off.
37:11You got three rounds to go.
37:12Going into the ninth.
37:13Going into the ninth.
37:14Yes.
37:15We're big. We're big, champ. We're big.
37:16Keep boxing and boxing.
37:17Don't worry about taking a guy.
37:18Let's win the fight.
37:19I'm a hand for him now.
37:20Okay.
37:21Boca.
37:22All right.
37:23Yeah.
37:24We still got to close him.
37:25Then we can get close to him.
37:26You got to punch in combination.
37:27Go ahead.
37:28Short right hand and the foot right hand.
37:29His right hand's dropping him.
37:30He's getting tired.
37:31All right.
37:32But you got to impress your will on him now.
37:33All right.
37:34All right.
37:35Second time.
37:36Come on.
37:37Second time.
37:38Come on.
37:39The pressure on.
37:40That's huge.
37:41You got to do it.
37:42All right.
37:43All right.
37:44All right.
37:45Winky Wright has thrown 160 more punches than Keith Mullins'
37:49through eight rounds.
37:50What I think Mullins' is not doing, I thought it come to my knowledge as late.
37:54Um, Mullins is not moving his head at all.
37:55I mean, that's another reason he's getting hit with all those punches that Wright's throwing.
37:59He's not moving his head at all.
38:00He's not moving his head at all.
38:01That's another reason he's getting hit with all those punches that Wright's throwing.
38:03He's not moving his head at all.
38:04through eight rounds.
38:06Something Mullins is not doing,
38:08I thought I'd come to my knowledge just late.
38:11Mullins is not moving his head at all.
38:13I mean, that's another reason he's getting hit
38:15with all those punches that Wright's throwing.
38:17He's not moving his head at all.
38:19You know, the head is the heavy, the hardest part to hit,
38:22and he's leaving his head right there for Wright
38:24to catch him all night long,
38:26and he needs to move his head, move his arms,
38:28with his jab going.
38:30Watch your elbow, all right?
38:32He's got to get a lot closer to be more effective.
38:36One thing we do know about Mullins,
38:40definitely hasn't been rattled so far,
38:43and he's taken quite a bit of punishment.
38:46Mullins started his boxing career in the Army,
38:50and he spent time in the Persian Gulf War
38:54as an artillery gunner.
38:57He told us that was a war in boxing.
39:01And boxing is the same thing.
39:03He's very smart right now to do tactical things,
39:05and punching the arms of Wright,
39:07trying to slow him down even at Army training.
39:09Being a combatant, that's what you are when you're in.
39:11It is a war.
39:12You know?
39:13It doesn't storm every time you're in there.
39:19In between rounds, Wright's corner told him,
39:22look, just win the fight.
39:24No need to try and get a knockout.
39:28Wright adhering to the advice of his corner.
39:31Mullins, though, trying to make something happen.
39:34This is the best round Mullins has had.
39:37Judy just talked about it with me in a few rounds.
39:40I said the first round.
39:42Wright, I don't blame it so much on Mullins.
39:44I blame it on Wright.
39:45Wright's not moving around.
39:46He's not jabbing.
39:47He's not doing what got him in.
39:49He's standing and making Mullins much more effective.
39:52Wright now trying to go to the uppercut.
39:54There's another Wright uppercut.
39:56And another.
39:58Mullins comes right back.
39:59Wright, though, working the left hand,
40:01puts together a beautiful combination.
40:03He's going to the body right now.
40:04He's doing what...
40:05It's funny.
40:06He's doing what Mullins should be doing,
40:08and Mullins is fighting a fight
40:10where he's just going forward.
40:11Wright's going to the body.
40:13Underneath, he's blocking shots with his arms.
40:16He's more effective right now
40:18than Mullins at Mullins attack.
40:22Even though Mullins is having a better round.
40:29Mullins starting to show some life here
40:31in the ninth round.
40:33Winky Wright deciding not to move as much
40:36to stand toe-to-toe.
40:38Like I said, I probably feel that
40:40he can't be hurt by Mullins' punch.
40:42Mullins probably don't hit hard enough to him.
40:44He's having a very effective fight here.
40:46But one of the criticisms of Wright
40:49in the Vargas fight
40:50is that he took the final three rounds off.
40:52Still to come, there's lightweight champion Paul Spadafora.
40:57Getting ready to defend his title against Billy the Kid Irwin.
41:02It's coming up immediately following Wright and Mullins.
41:07Wright and Mullins.
41:08Keep trying to throw it over here on the ice.
41:09I got you.
41:10He's chopping it up a little bit.
41:12There you go.
41:13All right.
41:14Let's see you before we go.
41:15Just block it.
41:16I don't know.
41:17I got it.
41:18I got it.
41:19I got it.
41:20I got it.
41:21I got it.
41:22I got it.
41:23I got it.
41:24I got it.
41:25I got it.
41:26I got it.
41:27I got it.
41:28I got it.
41:29I got it.
41:30I got it.
41:31I got it.
41:32I got it.
41:33Alright.
41:34Come on now.
41:35Stand out.
41:36I can put it in here.
41:37Let's go.
41:38I got it.
41:39Let's go.
41:40Let's go.
41:41Alright let's go.
41:42Same thing this round.
41:43Step back.
41:43Step back.
41:44Step back.
41:45Step back.
41:46Step back.
41:47Step back.
41:49There you see that internet audience begging for a little bit more bang here.
41:59Alright you know they could tell at the Mullins but I don't tell at the Wright.
42:03Wright's doing what he's supposed to do.
42:04He's boxing very small league.
42:06I mean, you know, one thing is certain.
42:09The audience is not getting hit with those punches.
42:11Wright will be, so Wright's playing a very small fight.
42:14Doing what he has to do to win.
42:15Right now, letting his hands go.
42:25Mullins has to get a little closer than he's been getting.
42:28Throw some more punches.
42:29He's still, you know, we're in the 10th round right now,
42:31and he has now put into effect a style
42:33of cutting the ring off and punching to the body.
42:35And it's starting to show now
42:36because Wright right now is feeling the ball to his feet,
42:39moving around, dancing around, utilizing the jab.
42:44A sense of desperation
42:45might be settling in for Keith Mullins.
42:51Set back to him. Come on.
42:53Let's grab his arm.
42:54Wright has looked very strong throughout the entire fight.
42:59Watch your head, Jay.
43:00Neither of these fighters has been knocked down.
43:03Keep your hand to yourself.
43:05In the 10th, 11th, or 12th round.
43:08Right now, like I said, as this fight goes on,
43:10the shots that Wright's not going,
43:12don't seem to have an effect on Mullins at all.
43:14He's still there.
43:15It looked to me just now that Wright shook his hand
43:18after he landed Australia's hand.
43:22But he flew it again, so I don't think he heard it.
43:24I can't say he heard his hand.
43:26Come on, Keith.
43:27Let's do it.
43:28The chances of Mullins coming up, though,
43:32with a knockout.
43:35He has two chances.
43:3611th and 12th round, it's 11th and 9th.
43:39Um, the way this fight's going right now...
43:41Watch your head.
43:42You stuck your head down.
43:43With the confidence of Wright,
43:44Wright looking like he can make out of trouble
43:46of being knocked out at any time soon.
43:48Wright now, turning up the power here in the 10th round.
43:50Watch that.
43:51Now, watch the grab of his head.
43:52Now, step back.
43:54Watch that wrist.
43:54Every time Wright lays in front of Mullins,
44:05he allows Mullins to get on the inside,
44:07throw his punches,
44:08and that actually pulls Mullins back into the round.
44:10It doesn't pull him into the fight,
44:11but it pulls him back into the round.
44:13This is the second time that you've seen
44:17Winky Wright on KO Nation.
44:24How do you think he's fair
44:25against the top-notch competition?
44:28I think...
44:29I believe we are watching the top-notch competition.
44:31I believe that, you know,
44:33he's a very good fighter,
44:34very good hand speed, reflexes,
44:35and a lot of people thought he'd beat Vargas,
44:39and I believe that, you know,
44:40he would do farewell against Trinidad
44:41and the rest of the top fighters.
44:43I can tell you what's the fight is
44:44at the top, an epsilon of boxing right now.
44:54Stop laughing, all right.
44:55Let's do it again, come on.
45:18Come on, not a deep one.
45:21Keith, you got two more rounds now.
45:23Come on now.
45:25Come on, he wanted to decide to do nothing.
45:27I feel more safe with it.
45:28Because he's rushing it with his head.
45:31Here we got...
45:32We got Wright making Mullings miss
45:34and countering.
45:35It's called the hit, make him miss,
45:37and make him pay.
45:37And this is what Wright's doing all night.
45:39He's making a miss,
45:40and he misses right there,
45:41and he counters immediately,
45:43right away with two shots.
45:47I got the stool.
45:49I got the stool.
45:50I got the stool.
45:52Come on, don't let him...
45:53Ronald Winkie-Wright putting on a professional boxing clinic here
46:04against Keith Mullings as we head
46:06into the 11th round.
46:07Our internet audience believes that Mullings definitely needs a knockout
46:19to go home, the victim.
46:21Well, I'm pretty sure if Mullings was back in Brooklyn,
46:23they would tell him he needs a get-back right now.
46:26He's got to get a knockout to come back.
46:28And Mullings right now has got to get on top of Wright,
46:32even make that happen, and he's not.
46:34Wright is boxing very beautifully around the ring,
46:36jabbing, sticking, moving,
46:39using his leverage, using his reach.
46:41Realistically, what can Keith Mullings expect for the remainder of his career
47:05if this fight does not work in his favor?
47:09Not much, you know.
47:11You go further down the ladder, not too far,
47:14because he goes to a caliber of opposition like Winky Wright,
47:17but he'll stay in probably the top 10,
47:20lower echelon of the top 10.
47:23Hopefully that he gets a call as an opponent for somebody.
47:27Maybe a Knight-Corte,
47:29maybe a Trinidad will give him a call.
47:31You know, sometimes there are benefits in losing.
47:33There are some benefits in losing.
47:35Believe it or not, there are.
47:39Julie just brought to my attention also a second ago
47:41that Winky Wright's mouth is open.
47:45Pan and breathe a little bit.
47:47You know, Mullings is throwing some effective body punches,
47:50and maybe they're starting to take their toll,
47:52but it's kind of late in the fight to take their toll.
47:55We're not in 15-round territory.
47:56We're in 12.
47:57Wright snaps back the head of Mullings
47:59with a strong right uppercut.
48:09We haven't seen any signs of him
48:11of Wright re-injuring that left hand at all tonight.
48:16He landed it beautifully, precisely.
48:19He threw it frequently.
48:23Winky Wright told us
48:24even though he injured his left wrist,
48:26he was not about to sit out this edition of KO Nation.
48:30He felt that if he didn't appear,
48:33his stock would go down,
48:36and he wouldn't get the respect that he deserves.
48:40Well, he wants to create that interest
48:41between him and Trinidad.
48:43He knows that he's active when people see him.
48:44You know what they say,
48:45out of sight, out of mind.
48:47Winky Wright,
48:48Hardly out of sight here
48:50at the Lawrence Convention Center
48:53against Keith Mullins.
48:54All right.
49:04Sit down.
49:05There you go.
49:08This is your last round.
49:10Talk round.
49:11Championship round.
49:12Championship round.
49:13All right.
49:14I want you to double your punches up here
49:16with more than you did just in.
49:17All right.
49:17That was a good round for you.
49:19All right.
49:19We've got a fucking little bit more.
49:21Okay.
49:22Just bounce and box, okay?
49:26Bounce and box.
49:27Don't lay there.
49:28Last round.
49:28Touch him up, champ.
49:30I'm going to be champion.
49:31Breathe.
49:31Breathe.
49:32I'm good.
49:34My hand is just bumping up,
49:36so I got it.
49:36Okay.
49:37Leave this round.
49:37All right.
49:38All right.
49:38Hear what I say now?
49:39I heard it.
49:39You got it, brother, man.
49:41This is your bad.
49:42I'm going to match down.
49:43Set up.
49:44Okay, second time.
49:45Seconds out.
49:46Stay busy.
49:47Stay busy.
49:48The 12th round.
49:49Seconds out.
49:52Step back.
49:53Touch him up.
49:53Come on.
49:54Last round.
49:55Touch him up.
49:56Good, champ.
49:57There you go.
49:58Play and fight.
49:59All right.
49:59The 12th and final round.
50:00Let's bring in Julie Letterman
50:02to see how she has it
50:03as we enter the final round.
50:04Fan, 108, 101.
50:06Nine rounds to two.
50:07Winky Wright, you know,
50:08he is out boxing Keith Mullings,
50:09but you know what?
50:10In that ninth round,
50:11he let Keith Mullings get in close.
50:13I think he's got a little bit tight,
50:14and Keith Mullings was able
50:15to bang the body,
50:16and that's why it gave Keith Mullings
50:17a nice round.
50:18But overall, beautiful boxing skills
50:20by Winky Wright.
50:21Good ring generalship.
50:23Easy fight for Winky Wright.
50:24Nine to two.
50:26Winky Wright through 47 punches
50:28in the 11th round
50:29to Keith Mullings 70.
50:31And one of the reasons may be,
50:34he told his corner
50:35that not just his left hand,
50:38but his right hand
50:39is hurt as well.
50:42And I noticed that in the last round,
50:44he started shaking both of his hands,
50:46one right before the bell rang,
50:47and that's signs of
50:48he might have re-injured his left hand.
50:52Right now, catches Mullings
50:55with a right hook.
51:00It's like they say,
51:01you know,
51:02Mullings has a very tough,
51:04tough chin,
51:05very solid head.
51:07Wright's been hitting it all night,
51:08and now his arms are killing it.
51:13Come on, step back,
51:14get Keith Mullings credit.
51:15Step back,
51:15step back,
51:16step back.
51:17Hey!
51:17Never really gave up in this fight,
51:19but never really got into
51:20the flow of the fight.
51:21Never really was able
51:22to seize upon his game plan,
51:24and Winky Wright
51:26basically put on a clinic.
51:28Well, we got to blame that
51:29on Winky Wright.
51:29Winky Wright did some
51:30right things.
51:32In the first round,
51:33he didn't fight
51:34tactical enough,
51:35he didn't box him,
51:36but as the fight went on,
51:37he started coming into grips
51:39with his style,
51:40and once he did that,
51:41he was able to implement
51:42his jab,
51:43his punches like he just did,
51:45keep Mullings at the end
51:46of his reach,
51:47like I said he would do,
51:48and this is why
51:49he's so effective tonight.
51:50Stiles make fights,
51:53and Winky Wright's style
51:54is most effective
51:55on a Gaelic Mullins.
52:05Winky Wright told us
52:07he wants to stay
52:09on the consciousness
52:09of the American fighting public.
52:14He feels that he put together
52:15a solid effort
52:16against Fernando Vargas
52:17one year ago,
52:18even though he lost
52:20that fight,
52:21but he easily handled
52:23Bronco McCart
52:24back in September,
52:27and he believes
52:30this is just one step up
52:31to the top level.
52:35He also told us
52:35he would like to get
52:36a knockout of Mullings tonight,
52:38and I guess trying to do it,
52:39he opened his hands,
52:40now we see that, hey,
52:42maybe he was wrong.
52:43He was smart enough
52:46to fight the fight
52:47that he believed
52:50would earn him a victory.
52:51He was smart enough
52:54to fight the fight
52:55that he believed
52:56would earn him a victory.
52:59to fight the fight.
53:01All right.
53:02All right.
53:03All right.
53:04All right.
53:16Here's what our internet audience
53:17believes.
53:20Winky Wright won the fight
53:21going away.
53:22Kevin, I have to agree.
53:23I got to agree.
53:24I scored it on my card,
53:25my official score cards.
53:27I mean,
53:28I only gave Mullings
53:29one round.
53:30Very good fight.
53:30Appreciate it.
53:31I believe that Wright
53:32has definitely took this fight
53:34and showed the American public
53:36exactly what he wanted to show,
53:37even though he didn't receive
53:38a knockout like he wanted.
53:40Well, he looked very good
53:41tonight in beating Mullings.
53:43All right.
53:43Well, let's take a look
53:44at the CompuBox.
53:46Final punch stat numbers
53:47between Keith Mullings
53:49and Arano,
53:49the Winky Wright.
53:50And there you see
53:57the story of the fight.
53:59Winky Wright
54:00throwing almost four times
54:03as many jabs
54:04as Keith Mullings.
54:06Mullings landing just four
54:08and Wright really controlled
54:09the fight with that jab.
54:20Kevin, will Winky Wright
54:27get an opportunity
54:28to fight Felix Trinidad
54:29in the near future?
54:31You know,
54:32you never know
54:32about those things.
54:33You know,
54:33Winky Wright is...
54:34Sometimes fighters
54:35avoid a fighter
54:36like a guy like Winky Wright
54:37like they have in the past.
54:39He's a southpaw
54:40with great hand speed,
54:41good movement,
54:43has a decent punch.
54:43Looks like he exhibited
54:44that tonight.
54:45Even though he didn't get
54:46a knockout,
54:47he's got all the tubes.
54:48But then again,
54:49on the other hand,
54:50he could be on...
54:51He's a mandatory
54:51for Trinidad's title.
54:53So maybe Trinidad
54:54would be forced
54:54into a fight with him.
54:59All right,
54:59let's send it up
55:00to Ed Lover
55:01with the official decision.
55:02Okay, ladies and gentlemen,

57:09with the winner,
57:09Ronald Winky Wright.
57:11Winky,
57:11a unanimous decision.
57:13You pretty much
57:14had your way in there.
57:15First off, though,
57:16tell me about the status
57:17of both of your hands.
57:18Both hands hurting real bad.
57:20The left was already sore,
57:22but I kept using it.
57:23But from throwing so many jabs,
57:24I think I broke
57:25my middle knuckle.
57:26He's got a hard head.
57:27He's a tough fighter.
57:28I knew it was going to be tough.
57:29I took this fight
57:30with a hurt hand
57:31to show the fans
57:32that, you know,
57:33I can adapt.
57:33I can fight anybody.
57:35And when the time comes
57:36to fight a better fighter,
57:38and I'm going to do it.
57:38Okay,
57:39it's the third time
57:39you've showcased
57:40your skills on HBO.
57:42You believe you're ready
57:43for a shot
57:43at Felix Trinidad.
57:45Oh,
57:45Trinidad is a great fighter.
57:46You know what I'm saying?
57:47I'm going to fight him
57:48different than I fought him.
57:49You know,
57:49I felt that
57:50Keith couldn't really hurt me,
57:52but he was throwing good shots.
57:53He's a tough champion,
57:55you know,
57:55and he's never been stopped,
57:57and I was trying to stop him.
57:58I hurt him with a hook,
57:58but like I say,
57:59both of my hands were hurt,
58:00and I couldn't finish him off.
58:01But all praise to him.
58:02He's a good fighter.
58:04Okay,
58:04I just want to thank
58:05Luda Bella and HBO
58:07for giving me the shot,
58:09and we're going to take it
