00:00...trip of the world between the champion, marvelous Marvin Hagler, and three-time world champion, Roberto Duran.
00:09Well, eight days ago in Las Vegas, Nevada, it was a fight that was talked about for months.
00:14Did the fight come up to the pre-fight expectations?
00:17That's the question everyone was asking thereafter, and why shouldn't I ask it of our co-host here, the champ, Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:24Ray, was the fight as good as the event in Las Vegas?
00:27Well, I thought it was a very exciting fight, because what you had was two great champions in the ring, making it difficult for each other.
00:33All right, let's talk about the fight tonight. Macho Camacho, you're starting to hear an awful lot about this guy.
00:38Cocky, by his own admission, more so than you even, by your own admission.
00:42But there's a very volatile sense here in San Juan, Puerto Rico tonight, and I think it's obvious that it's not just pre-fight hype.
00:48These two guys don't like each other very much.
00:49Well, I tell you, I have to use the old Western cliche, this town's not big enough for the both of us.
00:54Because of this confrontation, you have two guys that genuinely hate each other.
00:58And I think that's really true. There really is no nonsense about this fight that'll be getting on momentarily.
01:02Everybody is talking about Macho Camacho. Why shouldn't our own Larry Merchant? Larry?
01:07If Roberto Duran uses his machismo, his male pride, as a sort of weapon against his opponents,
01:15Hector Camacho uses it as a musical instrument filled with lead.
01:20First he serenades you, then he beats you with it, and then he serenades you again.
01:25Like Muhammad Ali and Ray Leonard, he has that magic combination of talent and energy and nerve,
01:32plus a winning smile that the cameras and the people seem to love.
01:36It all adds up to a kind of show business magic.
01:40Imagination.
02:01We are in the north.
02:02The 76 Olympics produced Ray Leonard, who charmed the public with his sunny disposition and brought glamour to the little men.
02:11Now, another charismatic star is rising in the boxing heavens,
02:18rising from the streets of New York and Madison Square Garden.
02:22He's grown from a boy to a flashy three-time Golden Gloves champion
02:26to the Garden's most popular young pro fighter.
02:29Finally, to a matinee idol clad in red leather, all on New York's main stage.
02:35Come on, Mario Mario, and you're up.
02:37Hit the match, it's a match.
02:39I got what they like.
02:42It's like before five, I just don't go, I wait, I'll be shaking.
02:46No, I go in, I start looking crazy, yeah, buddy, and I throw my little flurries.
02:51That's something that's colorful.
02:52You know, not everybody has it.
02:54Ali had it, Ray Leonard had it, and right now, the way I'm coming up, I have it.
03:00Manhattan's Harlem is a melting pot of cultures in a very tough part of town.
03:04A couple of winters this morning.
03:06I'm glad you came to you.
03:06Out of it have come great champions like Sugar Ray Robinson and Carlos Ortiz.
03:13Spanish Harlem is populated primarily by first-generation Puerto Ricans,
03:17seeking, but not always getting, a better life.
03:20This is Hector Camacho's turf.
03:22If you lived on these streets, the chances are that Hector Camacho made you either cry or laugh.
03:29But it's doubtful you wouldn't know him.
03:31I was always famous.
03:36I mean, I had a reputation of running around the street, you know, beating up guys, and, you know, more of a, you know, bully-like.
03:44You know, I was never a skinny little kid.
03:46And, you know, it was always good with my ass.
03:48If you could make it in New York, you make it anywhere.
03:51That's plain fact.
03:51You make it anywhere.
03:52Out here, I walk down the street, and I see a guy just beating on a guy with a bat.
03:56I go, Jesus Christ.
03:58Hit him again.
03:59You know, that's our attitude.
04:01You know, we grew up with that roughness.
04:03I seen that when he was a kid that he liked to fight.
04:05He was always in fights, street fights, alley fights, gang fights, school fights, family fights.
04:12It's fights to be fighting.
04:13That's all, you know.
04:14It's in him.
04:14You know, it's like Michelangelo was born to paint pictures.
04:18Hector Camacho was born to knock guys out.
04:23In Camacho's fights at Madison Square Garden, he showed dazzling speed and style,
04:27combined with a street-fighting viciousness that earned him a reputation as a spectacular showman,
04:34but also a dirty fighter.
04:36It's likely he has had as many warnings as knockouts.
04:43I believe that it's nothing fair in war.
04:46You get rough, I'll get rougher.
04:48You know, I'll let you know I'm the boss.
04:50You know what I'm saying?
04:51You know, if I grab you behind the head and hit you with one hand,
04:54and I do it again, and I hit you again, and I keep doing it,
04:56if you let me, I'll keep doing it.
04:58You know, it's like if you got money and you walk down the street,
05:00if I know you got money and you know you got money,
05:02and you know if you're going to pass through that,
05:04you're going to let me take your money.
05:05I don't take it.
05:06An expert in survival in the ghetto,
05:09Hector Camacho used to steal the cars he can now buy.
05:14I love cars.
05:15I start driving at the age of 14.
05:17Who's going to let me a car?
05:18I don't got no license.
05:19When I want something, I'll get it.
05:21I'll just take them, buy it, take care of it.
05:23And one day when they run out of gas, I got no more money,
05:26I just leave it there.
05:27Eventually, Camacho's game came to a halt.
05:30He was caught and put in prison for three and a half months,
05:33and it changed him.
05:35It wasn't fun no more.
05:37You know, I'd look at the walls and talk to myself,
05:39and then talk to myself, and look at me,
05:41I'm talking to myself, look where I'm at.
05:43Oh, God, please give me another break.
05:45Well, I had a chance, you know, to show him that life wasn't, you know,
05:47that's a bowl of cherries, you know.
05:49That life was something you had to live and learn and make him be a man,
05:52which he learned how to be.
05:53And when you learned how to be a man, you learned how to be a champion.
05:56Finally, God gave me a break, a five-year probation.
05:58I told the judge I was going to do it.
06:01I'll become a world champion.
06:02I'm a world champion right now, and it's one down and two to go.
06:06I want to be a three-time champion.
06:07John Montez was a victim of Camacho's new attitude,
06:12which was to put his great energy, ambition, talent, and viciousness into the ring.
06:18He knocked out Montez in one round.
06:27130-pound champion Bobby Chacon then was stripped of his title
06:31for refusing to defend against Camacho.
06:34That set up a fight with Bazooka Limon for the vacated championship.
06:42Camacho wasted no time with Limon, attacking him at the very opening bell.
06:48He then knocked him down with a left at the end of the third round.
06:52And in the fifth round, Limon was finally overwhelmed by Camacho's speed,
06:57and after another knockdown, the fight was stopped.
07:02Camacho was champion.
07:05And now the self-styled macho man was in tears.
07:10My last fight was just a moment of growth when my mother came,
07:13and just all that came out.
07:15My tears started coming down.
07:17Before I came, people was doubting me.
07:19They never seen me fight, you know, so I kept telling them,
07:22when they see me, they're going to love me.
07:24And so they did, boy, ain't much all the way, you know.
07:27He's risen to the top of a high-paying profession,
07:32but he still lives on the top of a low-income housing project.
07:36Lives in his mother's apartment with his brothers and sisters.
07:39The same friends, the same lifestyle.
07:42He's even more the pride of the Klan and the neighborhood.
07:48Now he has the medals and the clippings, as well as the money, to show for it.
07:52And yet he's still the street-smart bully,
07:57now passing along a rather brutal lesson in survival to a very young nephew.
08:02And yet he has managed the rare trick of turning a very negative force into a positive one.
08:17I don't know how he gets to sleep at night.
08:19He likes a lot of laughter.
08:20He's dancing all the time.
08:22He's got more energy than I could ever dream of having.
08:25He's got terrific speed.
08:27He's got great movement.
08:28He puts combinations together really well.
08:31He's always gets himself on balance.
08:34He's intense, and he's got a heart that big.
08:38And he's got this feeling that he's not going to get beat,
08:41that no one's going to beat him.
08:42And he thrives on that.
08:44I have a dream that I hold in my heart
08:48And I won't let go
08:50Welcome tomorrow
08:54I'm on my way
08:57So goodbye yesterday
08:59I want to be a perfect example for my people
09:02I'm living my dream
09:04This is what I always want to be
09:06You know, I want to be the best of what I got, of what I know
09:10I always want to dress in leather suits
09:12I want people to know that I'm the baddest mother around
09:19And tonight, against a respectable, very experienced opponent
09:30In front of one of the toughest audiences in the world
09:33Hector Camacho
09:35Will have to prove himself again
09:38As he has done every day of his life
09:40In the barrio
09:41Barry?
09:42And who is Rafael Solis?
09:44Well, that's a question you won't find the answer to
09:46In too many places
09:48East, north, west, or south
09:50Of San Juan, Puerto Rico
09:51If he is to be known
09:53Anywhere beyond this one Caribbean island
09:55Tonight
09:56Will have to be his night
09:58Old San Juan
10:01A city whose ties with the past
10:03Remain virtually undisturbed
10:05Amidst the presence of a modern age
10:08A harmonious blend of different centuries
10:11Puerto Rico
10:12While a haven for vacationing tourists
10:14Is indeed proud of its boxing heritage
10:17Boxing champions have emerged from here
10:20Like so many cars from an assembly line
10:23Tonight
10:28Rafael Solis would like to add his name
10:31To an already impressive roster
10:34A virtual unknown to many
10:36But not to all
10:38Rafael Solis is an excellent boxer
10:47He's undefeated in Puerto Rico
10:49And he's left-handed
10:51He won
10:53Has a record
10:5435 fights
10:5618 by knockouts
10:59He has more experience
11:01Than macho camacho
11:03He had from the last 25
11:05He had 16 knockouts
11:07See
11:08And he fight with anybody
11:10See
11:11Camacho
11:12From the last
11:13From 25
11:14He had only 12 knockouts
11:16He can punch
11:17And from my point of view
11:22He has a very good left overcut
11:24So for this fight
11:27I don't expect
11:29Too much difficulty for Solis
11:31To beat Camacho really
11:33To be sure
11:35To be sure
11:35Opinions may differ
11:36But not here
11:37But not here in Rio Piedras
11:39Where Rafael Solis
11:41Was born
11:41Raised
11:43And makes his home today
11:44These modest surroundings
11:47Things are in stark contrast
11:49To old San Juan
11:50And the Condado
11:51Because of this
11:53His desire to win
11:54Is overwhelming
11:55Both for himself
11:57And for his family
11:59There are those
12:00Who would say
12:01That he's undisciplined
12:02That he lacks
12:03A proper manager promoter
12:04And has been dealt with
12:06Harshly
12:07By the boxing world
12:08But Solis feels
12:09Tonight's matchup
12:10Should have taken place
12:12Last August
12:12I was number one
12:18Before Camacho
12:19And they took me out
12:21To put him in
12:21And then
12:22There was a contract
12:23That said
12:24I was going to fight Camacho
12:25For that position
12:27That I gave to Camacho
12:29And then they took Limon
12:30Who was number five
12:32I was number two
12:33And Camacho one
12:34And they had
12:36An elimination bout
12:37Limon Camacho
12:38I never thought
12:40They would fight
12:40For the title
12:41That upsets you
12:44I have fought with
12:48Faster boxers than him
12:49People who know more
12:52Why should Camacho
12:54Speed be a problem
12:55He's the one
12:58Who is always fighting
12:59With slow fighters
13:00That's why he looks so fast
13:02I think I'm going
13:04To beat Macho Camacho
13:05Because he hasn't
13:06Fought anybody important
13:08And I have fought
13:09The world's best
13:10And I think I'm going
13:11To be the world champion
13:12Tonight
13:12But there are people
13:15Looking at the record
13:16Of Rafael Solis
13:17With an equally
13:18Suspicious eye
13:19Regardless of their
13:21Past records
13:21Or previous opponents
13:23This dispute
13:24Will be settled in the ring
13:25A little more than a year ago
13:36Solis had little trouble
13:37Putting away
13:38Aquilino Aspria
13:39With a knockout
13:40In the sixth round
13:41Four months later
13:51He sent Joey Mays
13:52To the canvas
13:53In the second round
13:54And this past August
13:58Solis defeated
13:59Benny Marquez
14:00On the same night
14:01That Hector Camacho
14:02Became the champion
14:04Camacho
14:12He thinks
14:13And he has
14:14He have
14:15Said it in Puerto Rico
14:16That he is
14:18The new
14:19Shura Rele owner
14:19And
14:21Maybe he should wait
14:23A little bit
14:24Just in case
14:26Because you never know
14:27You never know
14:28And Rafael Solis
14:41Has already come
14:42Into the ring
14:42And Ray
14:42This is significant
14:43I think
14:43Because he has been
14:44Noted as a slow starter
14:45And he's already
14:46Been in the ring
14:47For a full five minutes
14:48So he's been made
14:48To cool his heels
14:49Waiting for Hector
14:50Macho Camacho
14:51Well there's pressure
14:52Now sitting there
14:53Waiting for Camacho
14:54And I have a little
14:55Brief scenario
14:56I think if Camacho
14:57Rushes out the very
14:58First round
14:58It could be a very
14:59Fast fight
15:00Let's take a look
15:01At some of the numbers
15:01On Rafael Solis
15:03He has not lost
15:04Since 1977
15:04And one of those
15:05Two losses
15:06Was in his very
15:06First fight
15:07He was knocked out
15:08In the very first round
15:10Came back to knock
15:11The man out
15:11Who knocked him out
15:12He has a no decision
15:14And a no contest
15:15He looks very calm
15:16Well he looks composed
15:17But again
15:18We'll see what's
15:19Going to take place
15:19In a second
15:21And coming out
15:22Of the locker room
15:23Now making his way
15:24Toward this arena
15:24It'll be interesting
15:25To see also
15:26Just how the crowd
15:27Responds
15:27Most of the conversation
15:29Before the fight
15:29Was that the crowd
15:30Would be pretty well
15:31Mixed between these two
15:32I would agree
15:33I think it's gonna be
15:3450-50
15:34And we've heard
15:38This chant before
15:39We heard it with
15:39Aaron Pryor
15:40With him
15:41It was Hawk time
15:42And with Hector Camacho
15:43It is Macho time
15:44As he makes his way
15:47And the crowd
15:47Has not yet seen him
15:48Which is why the crowd
15:49Is as quiet as it is
15:50Right at the moment
15:51Just kind of sitting
15:52And waiting for
15:52Macho Camacho
15:53To make his entrance
15:54Here
15:54You were in his
15:55Locker room before
15:56And you were saying
15:56It was a very lively scene
15:58Talking about being loose
15:59Camacho is dancing
16:00To Michael Jackson
16:01And Solis was
16:03Just having his hands
16:04And Macho Camacho
16:08Still making the long way
16:09You can see him
16:09Very animated
16:10That's sort of his act
16:11He has said
16:12And you heard him say
16:13In the feature
16:13That we ran earlier
16:14That he likes to play
16:15To the house
16:16And he's certainly got
16:17A crowd to play to here
16:19And I'm not sure
16:22It's a crowd
16:22That's completely
16:23On his side either
16:24Now the crowd
16:27Starting to recognize him
16:28And as we mentioned
16:29Earlier
16:29It is perhaps
16:30Even more than
16:3150-50
16:32It is rather lopsidedly
16:34In the favor of
16:35The challenger
16:35Raphael Solis
16:36And his prowls
16:37Are so fickle
16:38And we'll see
16:39What's going to take place
16:40Once the fight begins
16:41Camacho
16:45With his handlers
16:47Around him
16:48Don Thibodeau
16:50Billy Giles
16:51Tony Tompkins
16:54Will be in his corner
16:55No relation
16:55And now the crowd
16:57Starts to acknowledge
16:58The presence of the champion
16:59Hector Macho Camacho
17:01I have to say one thing
17:05His act is unique
17:06I call Camacho
17:08Personality kid
17:09He has this type
17:09Of charisma
17:10That is television made
17:12Now you were saying
17:13We touched upon this
17:14At the top of the show
17:15That you were cocky
17:16And you have to be
17:17I think
17:17Any good athlete
17:18Who really knows
17:19His way around
17:19In any sport
17:20There's a little bit
17:20Of cockiness to him
17:21But you were saying
17:22He goes you
17:23Three or four levels better
17:24Oh yes
17:25In fact
17:25He comes out
17:27And he's giving the public
17:28What they demand
17:29And that's showbiz
17:30And he comes into the ring
17:32And I think
17:32We'll see a little bit
17:33Of showbizness
17:33As soon as he does
17:34Come in
17:35Let's watch him
17:35Macho Camacho
17:4322 and 0
17:44He's got 12 knockouts
17:45Only two knockouts
17:46However
17:46In his last five fights
17:47And he doesn't really
17:49Consider himself to be
17:50A knockout type of fighter
17:51By his own admission
17:52He said
17:53I'm a counter puncher
17:54Well it's his accumulation
17:55Of punches that do
17:56Take his toll on a fighter
17:57His story has been told
18:01On numerous occasions
18:03How he sort of came
18:04From the ghetto
18:05And still goes back
18:07To the ghetto
18:07After every fight
18:08Although he also has
18:09A place now
18:10That he doesn't tell
18:11Anybody about
18:11That he goes back to
18:13That he caused his retreat
18:14I also noticed
18:15That he may be
18:16The first champion
18:16To have a ponytail
18:18It's a new style
18:22Larry
18:22And he is clad
18:26In pink
18:26Pink and black shoes
18:28Pink robe
18:29Championship belt
18:30Around his waist
18:31Clashes terribly
18:32With the pink
18:32And right now
18:34Let's go up
18:34For the ring announcer
18:35Luis Morero
18:36For the introductions
18:37Of the fighters
18:37And now
18:38Ladies and gentlemen
18:40The final final final final final
18:42Here
18:44Van Ving
18:47Van Ving
18:48Presenta
18:49Este combate
18:51Estenar
18:51Por el título
18:52De los
18:54Super Plumas
18:56A super featherweight championship
18:58As the announcements
19:00Will be made

19:48Camacho
19:48Camacho
19:48Is introduced
19:49And very much
19:49Of a mixed reveal
19:50Here from the fans
19:51Well they've changed
19:52Their minds
19:53As stated
19:53As usual
19:55This could be
19:57A very short fight
19:58Larry a lot of people
20:01We should keep in mind
20:03And I don't know
20:04And I don't know how good
20:05Solis is
20:06But he's come from a boxing family
20:08Two brothers have fought for the world titles
20:12One of them has won it briefly in the Bantamweight division
20:14He's been a professional fighter for 10 years
20:17So he's got some background in boxing
20:21And we just ought to respect that a little bit
20:24At least until the fight starts
20:26And a lot of handshaking
20:29And very good sportsmanship going on here
20:31As we prepare to get underway
20:33It'll be interesting to see Ray
20:34Just how Camacho starts this fight
20:36He knows he's in there against a guy
20:39Who historically
20:40Has been a slow starter
20:42Opening round
20:55They come to the center of the ring
20:56And it's just rather
20:57Even pace to start
20:59As a matter of fact
21:00Solis is more uptempo
21:01Than Camacho at the bell
21:02Well for Solis
21:05He's going to have to keep that jab out there
21:06And keep Camacho off balance
21:08If not
21:09Camacho is going to rush in
21:10Try to get him hurt
21:11And get him out of there
21:12And Solis playing a little game
21:14With Camacho here
21:15As he smiles at him
21:16Camacho not particularly a stylish fighter
21:24He's the guy that gets the job done
21:26And does it in pretty spectacular fashion
21:28He is dealing with a man
21:33With an 8 inch reach advantage on him here
21:35Not to mention 5 inches in height
21:40And that height and reach advantage could create a few problems for Camacho
21:45Until he's able to figure Solis out
21:47And also it's compounded by the fact that he's a left-handed
21:51Yes and the fact that he must match Solis' jab
21:56Slow his man down
21:58Solis has been able to get the jab in here early on
22:01Solis trying a left-hand lead very short
22:07You notice the way that Solis keeps that jab out there Barry
22:10What can happen is a counter-punch by Camacho
22:14Camacho on the other hand has to be very careful of Solis' left hand
22:19Solis drops that right hand after he throws the jab too
22:23And that can be very dangerous
22:25What they're doing is they're matching jab
22:29And this is what Camacho wants to get inside to slow his man down
22:34Solis is really toying with Camacho here
22:37And that could be toying with fire
22:38Well as long as he keeps that jab out there
22:43He's going to make it quite difficult for Camacho
22:45He caught him with a right hand
22:47And Solis bobbing and waving against the ropes
22:49Says I'm not hurt
22:50What we have here is intimidation on Solis' car
22:55And he could very well frustrate Camacho
22:59With his height and with his being cute
23:02Very active first round and the crowd here loves it
23:04Right hand by Camacho
23:06Solis bounces off the ropes
23:07We want to remind you that we do have a translator with us
23:21Enrique Sanchez sitting with us ringside
23:23And we will get an immediate translation
23:24Of just what transpires in the corner of Rafael Solis
23:28Where of course the language there will be Spanish
23:30We will also be going into Macho Camacho's corner
23:3415 seconds remaining in the first round
23:39Very fast paced round
23:40It's a good fight for Camacho
23:42Because he'll learn how to be more technical with other fights
23:45There's a little bit of a butt there also
23:48Camacho calls himself a street fighter
23:51He says I came from the gutter
23:52That's the way I fight
23:53End of round one
23:54Very uptempo round
23:56So he's very active and perhaps a little bit more aggressive
24:07Than we had been led to believe he would be
24:10Let him attack you and then you can't go punch
24:29He's a butt fighter I think he's tired
24:40Let's see what happens
24:42Well as you heard
24:45His own corner wants Solis to slow down
24:47And not be so quite so aggressive
24:49Perhaps just a little nervous energy in the first round
24:52I think you'll see him trying to be more of the counterpuncher now
24:55This is the second round
24:58Well they also claim that Camacho is tired
25:02I mean that was the first round
25:03Yeah I don't think that's quite true
25:05Supporters of Solis have said that
25:10If the fight should go five rounds
25:12After that Solis' chances improve a great deal
25:15Newport and overhand left hand
25:20By Camacho
25:21That punch was short
25:24It was difficult to make calls with Southpaw
25:28And Solis trying to go with an uppercut
25:37Solis he doesn't want to get against the ropes
25:46He shouldn't be against the ropes
25:47Combination by Solis
25:49Best combination of the fight
25:51The guys are really putting the whole body behind each punch
25:54Solis the right hook back with the left hand
25:57Solis doing a lot of combinations
25:59I have to say that
26:00Going downstairs on Camacho
26:10Solis is still tight
26:27And he's weighing his shot
26:28He's starting to telegraph his punches
26:30Also that's a sign of
26:33He's talking about being tired
26:34That's a sign of fatigue
26:35Oh I'm weary
26:36And remember that's just the second round
26:39Solis hitting and holding
26:43And draws a warning for it
26:47Most fighters have to be very careful about coming in
27:02They must be very cautious
27:04And use that jab first
27:06And work their way in
27:07Because in rushing in
27:08Both are susceptible for lead off right
27:11Or lead off left
27:12Rafael Solis is really fighting an intelligent fight so far
27:16At least in the sense of trying to take advantage of his reach
27:18That was the lead off
27:19That was the lead off punch I was talking about
27:21What happens
27:23The fighter rushes in without putting a jab out first
27:26He comes in with his head
27:27And now Macho Camacho
27:31Counterpunching very well
27:32And once again
27:35Left to the heart
27:36If that left hand had laid on the chin
27:39It probably would have been over
27:40And you saw Camacho
27:42Spin his man around
27:43And try to hit him from behind
27:44Macho has done that before
27:46And this is the end of the second round
27:53Let's take a look at Solis
28:06Trying to use a straight left hand
28:08Two southpaws fighting for a world championship
28:12Sort of unusual
28:23And the first time is in exchange
28:25The cool and slip in here
28:26Straight left hand
28:27Straight left hand
28:28Keep that jab
28:30Set it up
28:31Do it, do it
28:32Watch your way
28:33Keep it close to that
28:34Jab
28:35Not sticking him in the back
28:36Look at this
28:37I say you make him get off
28:38You count him with the hook
28:39Double up on him
28:40Step around, alright
28:41Look at the Camacho
28:42Seems to be handling the commotion here
28:44Quite well
28:46I think he's been
28:47A lot more composed and disciplined
28:49Than we might have been able to believe
28:51I think that's absolutely right Larry
28:54In fact when Camacho has had mediocre performances in the past
28:57They've always been
28:58Because he clowned a little bit too much
29:00He has had a couple of tough fights
29:01One against Rubenito Perez
29:03And Camacho turns his man around again
29:06And the other against Blaine Dixon
29:08And both times really
29:10It was because he clowned for the most part
29:12And held
29:13Well Camacho's become more of a professional
29:15With every fight
29:16Little short with the left hand was Solis
29:21What's happened now
29:23Camacho slowly but surely
29:25Wearing Solis down
29:26Because I don't believe Solis has ever been at this pace
29:31Solis throwing a lot of arm punches
29:36You have to understand you have to be doing something
29:39To match Camacho's speed
29:41Right
29:42Okay
29:43Defensively in office
29:45That hook was up on the gloves
29:48Camacho's circling his man now
29:49And that is exactly what Billy Giles told him to do in the corner
29:52You have the feeling Camacho's starting to measure his man a little bit here
30:05Well he's uh
30:07He has control now
30:08Although it's still a very difficult fight for Camacho
30:11What he should be doing now
30:13At this point
30:14It's time to work that body
30:15Because Camacho
30:16He works about it very well
30:17And it will make the fight easier for him
30:20Because of Solis' height and reach advantage
30:24Solis really opens himself up
30:26When he throws those wild right hands
30:27It's not a jab
30:28It's really kind of a roundhouse right
30:34The way Solis is coming in
30:36He's going to catch something on the chin
30:39Plus he's off balance
30:40He knows when he throws
30:41Especially the right hook
30:42He swings completely off balance
30:44Like there
30:50That was a perfect example once again
30:54That right hand by Camacho was short
30:56The upper cut actually got in
31:03And you're very right, right?
31:04Solis really lunging with his punches now
31:06And you have the feeling he's just
31:07Sitting back
31:08Camacho is
31:09Just waiting for an opportunity
31:10Because what's happening now
31:12Camacho's match and punch for punch
31:14And even started to double up on his punches
31:20And he went down and came up
31:21Roger the violin back to the head
31:23Those are the type of combinations
31:25And punches
31:26That would do damage
31:27And be very effective
31:28Against a fighter like Solis
31:29Who was awkward as a matter of fact
31:31So he's also getting a little bit predictable
31:43With what he's doing
31:44He's even coming in with a lunging right
31:45That time he came in with an uppercut
31:52End of the third round
32:01We're going into Solis' corner
32:03He may be built like the fifth ring post
32:05But he's not
32:07Because he's got his dark quarter
32:11He's got his dark quarter
32:21Keep going to your opponent's side now
32:23Don't fight with him
32:25Fight it
32:26Fight it
32:28Fight seriously
32:29You don't fight it
32:32Don't smile
32:36They take that into consideration
32:37They're smiling
32:42Don't try to hit one point
32:43Try to gap
32:45Gavin, Gavin
32:46What Solis' corner is telling him
32:48This is a fight
32:49Take it seriously
32:51Well if he can't take this one seriously
32:57Well if he can't take this one seriously
32:58I don't think there's anyone he can
33:00I was going to say
33:01Was it necessary?
33:05This is the fourth round
33:11Now we see some head
33:12And head and head face back on Marcio
33:14Which throws a fight off
33:15It throws his time
33:16And it's in the mall
33:17And it's in the mall
33:25That missed
33:26That's the punch
33:27Camacho has to watch out for
33:28That left hand
33:29Of Solis
33:30Because he
33:31So he throws his jab out
33:32He comes across with that
33:33Straight left hand
33:34Straight left hand
33:43There's not too much movement
33:44From Solis
33:48Not quite as wild this round
33:49As he was in the third however
33:50Well he was a little tight
33:51In the early round
33:57What we should see
33:58Is more fluid punches
33:59And more natural punches
34:01From both fighters
34:02They both had time to listen up
34:04They both had time to listen up
34:17You know Barrow is expecting a flash knockdown
34:18From Camacho
34:19But Solis
34:20He impressed me that first
34:21The first two rounds
34:22Because he was very very defensive
34:23And Solis not fighting a bad fight here
34:25Making a good shot of himself
34:26There was a low blow in there
34:27And Camacho apologizes
34:34Neither man is marked
34:45This is the fourth round
34:46Coming down toward one minute remaining
34:48He's been a good fight so far
34:53He's been a good fight so far
35:02That was up on the gloves
35:03Camachos be careful about rushing in with his ears
35:05And Camacho the right hand counter punch
35:08That's what he needs to be doing Barry
35:10Keep that jab out
35:11And every opportunity to take advantage of it
35:13Camacho also got an uppercut in in close quarters
35:16And there was a good left hand by Solis
35:19And Solis another left hand
35:24That was a short left hand
35:25That backs Camacho off for the moment
35:27Solis has a very stiff jab
35:37That brings the crowd alive here in San Juan
35:39That brings the crowd alive here in San Juan
35:44That's Camacho on the right hand again
35:48Some of the best punching in the fight in that round
35:53That was Solis' best round
35:58Beat him to the point
36:00Beat him to the point
36:01Stop jabbing him
36:02He's been on the initiative
36:03More than he expected
36:04Alright
36:05He's got to get a jab at him
36:06You jab at him
36:07And he seems to be on the other hand
36:08He's still hasn't
36:09He's been out
36:10What a awkward stop
36:11I jab him to stumble
36:12He won jab him
36:13I dropped him
36:14I'm not sure
36:15You can hear
36:16You can hear
36:17You can find
36:18You can get a little
36:19One point the next time
36:20Okay
36:21Here's Aprique
36:32There's that long left hand
36:34Landed by Solis
36:36That probably was the difference in the scoring of that fight
36:40Here it is from ground level
36:42Something we hadn't noticed before
36:45Was that Camacho immediately hit him back with his own right hand
36:49That's the fifth round
36:54And actually in the fourth round, Ray, another thing is that Solis went to the right hand jab
37:00Rather than that looping right hand that he'd been trying with before
37:03Well, he'll find that it's far more effective going straight than trying to loop it
37:08Because keeping Camacho in the center of the ring
37:10And keeping him at bay will help him out a great deal
37:13If he wants to land with that overhand net
37:15Camacho very quick on the counterpoint
37:18Camacho is making it a little difficult for Solis because he's starting to fight that left hand
37:29That was a good right hand by Camacho
37:31Camacho could be hurt from a punch by Solis
37:37I don't think really either man was hurt there
37:40Solis just coming on the offense
37:45Yes, I think he is, Barry, because he's backing away
37:50And that's sign of hurt
37:52And there was a left to the heart
37:56That was a beautiful leadoff left by Camacho
38:00Just a terrific punch by Camacho
38:03Now watch what happens with Camacho
38:05He's going to take advantage of it
38:07And watch the punches that he's able to throw
38:09And if he wasn't hurt before, he is hurt now
38:11And another right to the body
38:15Solis is out of it now
38:17And he's still got a long way to go
38:19Not yet halfway through the fifth round
38:24Solis pleading from the mouth
38:26And just trying to weather the storm
38:281.23 remaining in the round
38:31There's enough time to get Solis out of there
38:34Camacho has to be careful not to out-clutch himself
38:37And there's another good left hand
38:39That's all
38:40This one's going to be over
38:52And he's fed down
38:53That's all
38:54Enough
38:55This one is over in five
39:02And once he had his man hurt
39:05Macho Camacho did not let up for a minute
39:07He really has the killer instinct
39:08No question
39:09It appeared to be Barry that Camacho was hurt
39:11But evidently he wasn't
39:13And he caught Solis with that straight left hand
39:16And put him down
39:18It was just a terrific punch to the heart
39:21Right on the chest is where it looked like that punch landed
39:24It was a very powerful punch
39:27Here's another look
39:28Well here we see Solis rushing in
39:30As I stated before
39:31He's susceptible for lead-off punches
39:33Now that really wasn't the punch that did the damage to start things up
39:37It was the left hand of the chest
39:39Let's take a look at another
39:40This again is another look at the punch that put him down
39:42Once again there's that straight left hand of Camacho
39:45And with Camacho's speed, Barry
39:47He can do this and get out of trouble at the same time
39:51So you can see the predictable bedlam in the ring here
39:56Camacho very impressive all told
40:00I tell you what I'm very impressed with Camacho's performance
40:03Is the fact he was composed and he was professional in the ring tonight
40:08Yeah he really was, he lost a lot of show
40:10But I'll tell you what also, I think a lot of that had to do with Sugar Ray Leonard
40:14I know you had an opportunity to talk to him a few times
40:17Well since I've been here I had a chance, the opportunity to speak with Camacho
40:21And all the animation is fine and dandy
40:23But when you're in the ring, you have to be very serious
40:26And that is his mother, a kiss from his mother
40:30And his sister also in the ring, and his brother
40:33And I think this is a win that he can take home and be very proud of
40:39Let's take a look at the last knockdown
40:42Well, once again being a professional
40:44Camacho took advantage of the opportunity
40:46He had Solis in trouble
40:48And Solis in bad shape at this point here
40:51There was no way he was going down
40:54There was another look
40:55Watch the speed of the punches
40:56Punches coming left and right
40:58Catching Solis on the back and the side of the face
41:00Solis was just in bad shape, Barry
41:03Once he has his man in trouble
41:04There's no question he's going to finish him off
41:06And the fact that his hand speed, he takes full advantage of his natural and God gifted talent
41:11So a very impressive win
41:13And I think also it's fair to say that he beat a pretty good fighter tonight
41:16Well, it's fair to say that Camacho is in there with Rafael Solis
41:19Who I say now was a worthy challenger
41:23All right, we're going to be going up to the ring in just a moment here
41:26Larry Merchant trying to get himself in a position where he can talk to the winner
41:29And right now, let's go up to Larry Merchant, who is with Macho Camacho
41:34Okay, Barry, here we have Hector Camacho
41:36Hector, it looked like he hit you his best shot about a minute before you finished him
41:41And got you just upset and you came back at him
41:43Well, yes, he did call me pretty well
41:45Nothing really dangerous, but I thought he hit me
41:48You know, he let me know he hit me
41:49And it was a good shot, and it made me come
41:51It's like, the better you are, the better come out of me
41:53Do you think he got careless after that?
41:56And he thought that he would have you and left himself open?
41:59No, because he was trying to protect the fight
42:02And I was just beating him with my jab and a lot of sweet movement
42:05And it was mad outside because he was beginning to slow down
42:07Did you find him very awkward and difficult to go with in the first two or four rounds?
42:11Yes, at first, at first, you know, for him, I have two challenges
42:23Hector
42:31Hector, it seems that you...Hector, people think of you as a wild crazy kid
42:38But in the ring, you seem pretty disciplined.
42:40Well, it's like, you know, it's time for pleasure and it's time for business.
42:44And when it comes up to business, I get pretty mean.
42:46Because I'm the macho man.
42:48What are your plans in the future?
42:50Do you want to meet Ray Mancini?
42:52Do you want to meet Aaron Pryor?
42:54Well, Mancini's my big dream fight.
42:56That's the money fight.
42:57There's nobody out there but me and him.
42:59He don't got no business fighting Iron Pryor.
43:02If Iron Pryor did what he did to Aguero,
43:04imagine what he did to Mancini.
43:06Do you think you can fight Aaron Pryor?
43:08Well, no time, you know.
43:10Everything is timing with me.
43:12I want to be a three-time champion.
43:14I'll go after Mancini.
43:15And then later on in my career, by the age of 23,
43:18I'll give Aaron Pryor if that's all it takes to be a three-time champion.
43:21Thank you very much.
43:23But hey, nevertheless, Pryor's my main man.
43:25I dig him.
43:27All right. Thank you, Hector Camacho.
43:30Some fighters do seem invincible in the ring,
43:35but nobody is invincible.
43:37We saw that when Marvin Hagler fought Roberto Duran.
43:42Everybody has a fighter who can give him a lot of problems.
43:45Someday, this man here, Hector Camacho,
43:48will come up against a boxer that will somehow neutralize toward him.
43:53But he did what he had to do in his own way tonight,
43:56just as Marvin Hagler did what he had to do against the cagey veteran Roberto Duran.
44:03And you're going to see it all right here on HBO in a few moments.
44:07Barry?
44:08Okay. Thank you very much, Larry Merchant.
44:10Let me get your final impressions of Macho Camacho tonight.
44:12He was very impressive.
44:13And as you mentioned, maybe more important than anything else,
44:15he just seems to be maturing as a fighter.
44:17Well, Brian, it was indeed a tough fight and a very impressive win for Camacho.
44:20So he's made it very tough for Camacho with his height and reach advantage.
44:23But Camacho, as usually, comes out on top.
44:26You know, they call Macho Camacho the dead-end kid of the 80s.
44:29Well, I'll tell you, there's no dead-end for Macho Camacho.
44:31Streets are going to be paved with gold for him.
44:33There are some big-money fights ahead of him, and he had a very big one tonight.
44:36Well, Larry Merchant touched on the fight that we had last week in Las Vegas, Nevada.
44:40Everybody said that was going to be the fight of the year.
44:42Was it the fight of the year? Well, maybe not.
44:44It was a tactical kind of fight, and with tactical kinds of fights, of course,
44:48comes the kinds of fights where there are always controversies.
44:52Larry Merchant was with Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
44:54But in addition to that, which we will be getting to,
44:56you will now have an opportunity to see the entire fight.
45:00Let's go back. Eight days, Las Vegas, Nevada.
45:03You know, you knew we had him walk up.
45:07You knew we had him do the wild fight for him.
45:09Because that's why he's got his boxing.
45:11And he's got...
