End of an era: historic aircraft leaves service after more than half a century of operations

The U.S.-based humanitarian organization Samaritan’s Purse has announced the retirement of the last Douglas DC-8 registered in the United States, marking the end of an era for one of the most iconic jetliners in global aviation history.

The ceremony took place last week at the organization’s operational center in Greensboro, celebrating the legacy of the DC-8 with serial number N782SP. The aircraft was originally built as a DC-8-62CF in March 1969 for Finnair. Decades later, after being converted into a freighter (DC-8-72CF) and upgraded with modern CFM56-2 engines replacing the older JT3Ds, it went on to fly for Air Transport International.

00:00Today we're saying goodbye to our first cargo plane, BC-8.
00:05We're also dedicating our 767, which we just got this year.
00:10And we just thank God for the tools that he gives us, so it's a great addition for Samaritan's Purse.
00:16This organization here in Greensboro has flown 238 missions
00:21and delivered over 10,298,000 pounds of relief supplies to 38 countries around the world.
00:30We want to be there quickly, with quality, but in the name of Jesus, serving boldly with the Word of God.
00:37The prayers bring so much help around the world.
00:39When they see that plane land, they know that things are going to be okay because Samaritan's Purse is there.
00:44Heaven will be more full because of the people in this room today who spend their lives making sure
00:50that these planes get to where God wants them to be so that we can show up in the name of Jesus,
00:57the only source of our hope.
01:00We want to dedicate this plane and give it back to the Lord.
01:04Lord, this is your plane.
01:05You've provided it.
01:06You've given it.
01:07And we're here to do your work and your service.
01:11So as you watch and you see these aircraft always take off, pray.
01:15Pray for where they're going.
01:17Wherever we go in the world, we want people to know who we are and why we're there.
01:22We are there in the name of the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ.
