End of an era: historic aircraft leaves service after more than half a century of operations
The U.S.-based humanitarian organization Samaritan’s Purse has announced the retirement of the last Douglas DC-8 registered in the United States, marking the end of an era for one of the most iconic jetliners in global aviation history.
The ceremony took place last week at the organization’s operational center in Greensboro, celebrating the legacy of the DC-8 with serial number N782SP. The aircraft was originally built as a DC-8-62CF in March 1969 for Finnair. Decades later, after being converted into a freighter (DC-8-72CF) and upgraded with modern CFM56-2 engines replacing the older JT3Ds, it went on to fly for Air Transport International.
