The United States Northern Command deployed an M142 HIMARS artillery system to the city of Nome, Alaska, as part of Operation Tundra Merlin.

The deployment took place on July 31 and involved U.S. military units and a Royal Canadian Air Force transport aircraft.

The system was deployed by the 17th Field Artillery Brigade, assigned to I Corps, from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state. Transportation to Nome was carried out aboard a Canadian C-17 Globemaster III, an aircraft designed to carry troops, vehicles and oversized cargo over long distances.
