Transcript
00:00Chris Cuomo made an insensitive joke
00:02about preferred pronouns while introducing
00:042020 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris
00:07at CNN's LGBTQ-focused Equality Town Hall.
00:10Now, two stars of the FX series Pose are speaking out.
00:13Here's the interaction between Cuomo and Harris
00:15that is making headlines.
00:16And my pronouns are she, her, and hers.
00:19She, her, and hers?
00:21Mine too.
00:22Broadcast journalist Cuomo is known to use
00:24the pronouns he, him, and his.
00:26Pronoun introductions are significant
00:28when commonly used within the LGBTQ community
00:31and seen as a progressive step toward
00:32a better understanding of gender identity.
00:34Following criticism, Cuomo apologized for his joke, tweeting,
00:38when Senator Harris said her pronouns were she, her, and hers,
00:40I said, mine too.
00:42I should not have.
00:43I apologize.
00:44I am an ally of the LGBTQ community,
00:46and I am sorry because I am committed
00:48to helping us achieve equality.
00:49Thank you for watching our town hall.
00:51However, notable trans activists Angelica Ross
00:54and India Moore, who rose to fame as stars
00:56of FX's groundbreaking series Pose,
00:59believe saying sorry isn't enough.
01:00Ross, who attended the town hall
01:02and was invited by candidate Elizabeth Warren, tweeted,
01:04what you should do, Chris Cuomo,
01:06is not just apologize,
01:07but admit what's behind this is your ignorance.
01:10You just showed you don't understand
01:11the importance of pronouns.
01:13So how do you confidently crown yourself an ally?
01:15Learn from black and brown trans women.
01:17And Moore, who identifies as gender non-binary,
01:20reacted to Cuomo's gaffe, writing,
01:21I'm glad you showed yourself this way,
01:23so that people can see that everywhere trans people's
01:25conversations are gatekept by cis people,
01:28our lives and issues won't matter.
01:30Trans people's pain and trauma is comedic relief,
01:32not just to you, but to a vast part of this country.
