Returning from vacation, the CNN host weighed in publicly on the resignation of his older brother, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Transcript
00:00My brother, as you know, resigned as governor of New York and will be stepping down next week.
00:05CNN anchor Chris Cuomo returned from vacation Monday night and addressed his brother, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's resignation,
00:12saying it would be his final word on the matter.
00:14I've told you it's never easy being in this business and coming from a political family, especially now.
00:20This situation is unlike anything I could have imagined.
00:23The host acknowledged that he hadn't covered his older brother's scandal, citing a rule from CNN management that he refrained from doing so due to the obvious conflict of interest.
00:32He said when the scandal happened, he tried to be there for his brother.
00:35I'm not an advisor. I'm a brother. I wasn't in control of anything. I was there to listen and offer my take.
00:42The anchor said the quote, simple and consistent advice he gave to his brother was to own what you did, tell people what you will do to be better, be contrite.
00:49And finally, accept that it doesn't matter what you intended. What matters is how your actions and words were perceived.
00:57He went on to reveal this.
00:59And yes, while it was something I never imagined ever having to do, I did urge my brother to resign when the time came.
01:06Back in May, it came out that the anchor had helped his brother respond to some of the misconduct allegations, joining calls and email chains with some of his brother's staff.
01:15He addressed his actions on a CNN program at the time, calling them a mistake.
01:18On Monday, he said this.
01:20When I was told to no longer communicate with my brother's aides in any group meetings, I acknowledged it was a mistake.
01:27I apologized to my colleagues and I stopped and I meant it.
01:31He also shared this.
01:32I never made calls to the press about my brother's situation.
01:35I never influenced or attempted to control CNN's coverage of my family.
