00:00Lupita Nyong'o will play two roles in the Odyssey.
00:04Confirming online speculation, Nyong'o plays Helen of Troy,
00:07the most beautiful woman in the world who gets blamed for starting a war.
00:11The Oscar winner also plays Helen's sister, Clytemnestra.
00:14The casting was confirmed in a new time profile of filmmaker Christopher Nolan,
00:18which also revealed why the Oppenheimer director declined to cast actors to play
00:22the gods of Mount Olympus in his adaptation of The Mythic Tale.
00:26Nolan says he considered the idea,
00:27then decided giving the gods a presence through nature and the characters' beliefs was the wiser move.
00:32Nolan said,
00:33I became more interested in the idea that, to the people in that period, evidence of gods was everywhere.
00:38The wonderful thing about cinema, and IMAX in particular,
00:41is that you can take an audience to a place of immersion,
00:44feeling close to events like storms, turbulent seas, high winds.
00:48You want the audience to be on the boat with them, fearing the ocean,
00:52fearing the wrath of Poseidon, the way the characters do.
00:54That, to me, is so much more powerful than any individual image you can have of a god.
00:58Nolan also gave some insight into casting rapper Travis Scott as a bard in the film.
01:03He explained,
01:04I cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral
01:08poetry,
01:09which is analogous to rap.
01:11The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as Odysseus,
01:13and is the first film shot entirely in the IMAX format.
01:16It hits theaters on July 17th.
