After being called out for transphobic jokes in ‘The Closer,’ the comedian performed at the Hollywood Bowl in front of Brad Pitt, Tiffany Haddish and Stevie Wonder and dismissed the outcry: "F— Twitter. This is real life."

00:00Dave Chappelle is doubling down on his jokes amid controversy surrounding his new Netflix special, The Closer.
00:07The comedian took center stage Thursday night at the Hollywood Bowl for a sold-out show,
00:12performing to a crowd that included Brad Pitt, Tiffany Haddish, Stevie Wonder, Jon Hamm, and more.
00:18While the comedian did not repeat any of the jokes in the special that have been loudly rejected,
00:23he did have a few things to say on cancel culture, saying,
00:26If this is what being canceled is like, I love it.
00:28At another point, he was more blunt.
00:31Twitter, NBC News, ABC News, all these stupid ass networks.
00:35I'm not talking to them. I'm talking to you. This is real life.
00:39Many in the LGBTQ community, in particular trans women, have objected to the comic's Netflix special
00:45after Chappelle used their real lives, bodies, and gender identity as punchlines in The Closer.
00:51On the topic of gender, Chappelle said in the special, gender is a fact.
00:55Every human being in this room, every human being on Earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on Earth.
01:03That is a fact.
01:06He also sided with Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling by identifying as Team Turf,
01:11a term that means trans-exclusionary radical feminist, an ideology that excludes trans women as women.
01:18I'm Team Turf.
01:19The National Black Justice Coalition called for The Closer to be pulled from the streamer,
01:24and glad weighed in on Twitter, Dave Chappelle's brand has become synonymous with ridiculing trans people and other marginalized communities.
01:32Jacqueline Moore, a trans writer, executive producer, and showrunner who worked on Netflix's Dear White People,
01:37also took a stand, saying she will no longer work with Netflix,
01:40while the company continues to put out and profit from blatantly and dangerously transphobic content.
01:46For his part, Chappelle delivered an earnest moment while he doubled down on themes so prominently displayed in the doc.
01:52Do something nice for someone who looks nothing like you.
01:54We have to trust one another.
