00:00Samantha Dean loved her profession it was a calling for her to help people who
00:10were in the midst of crisis Sam had a way with people that was her passion a
00:17tragic discovery she was shot three times with a small caliber weapon a
00:24secret romance they asked me if I knew who the father of Samantha's baby was
00:30and I did not know a web of lies the motive was just really really crazy in
00:37this case you tell you who actually pulled the trigger but is it business
00:40was she killed because of her job or a killer relationship you tell me how do
00:51you forgive
01:05tenacious determined strong these are just some of the words used to describe
01:12Samantha Dean when Samantha's in sixth grade she writes in her journal that she
01:17wants to become a police officer so she can go out and help others it becomes
01:21her mission to make sure those in need feel safe but Samantha's mission is cut
01:27short when at 29 she's found dead miles from home and the horrific truth about
01:34what brought her promising life to an end shocks a city and rattles the law
01:39enforcement community it's 209 a.m. when deputy Brian Reyes with the Bashrop County Sheriff's
01:51Office is performing a routine check of a vacant shopping center parking lot he first noticed
01:59that there was a black charger parked in this dumpster enclosure which piqued his interest that's not a
02:04very usual place to park a vehicle especially in the middle of the night as he gets closer he
02:19notices a body flying halfway out of the passenger side of the car covered in black plastic the victim
02:29appears deceased they determined that they had a homicide
02:33first responders from the Bashrop County Sheriff's Office identified the victim as 29 year old Samantha
02:52Dean what we learned in those early hours is that Samantha Dean worked in law enforcement and was a
03:01victim services counselor not that you don't give effort in all your cases but the law enforcement
03:07community it takes murder like this very seriously when it's one of their own that is a victim
03:12from the moment she was born on May 12 1985 near military base in Nuremberg Germany Samantha Elizabeth
03:28Dean is full of surprises we were told the baby was going to be a boy we didn't realize it was a girl
03:37until she popped out and the doctor said oh you have a girl and it was three days later before we had a name
03:44for her right away Samantha just had that it factor I didn't want her to grow up you just wanted her to be
03:55around all the time in 1998 when I exited military we moved to San Antonio Texas to pursue our dreams as a
04:05civilians I met Sam and we were 15 we became great friends she just had an aura that everybody was
04:23attracted to her I was a homebody I didn't like to go out and she was the one person that could lure me
04:34out she was never that type of girl chasing boys she wasn't that person at least not that I was aware
04:44of we were giggly and you know all enamored with the boys but we wanted the best of them we knew at
04:53an early age we wanted to find the one but the one will have to wait Samantha's got more important
05:00things on her mind when she was in sixth grade she said she wanted to become a police officer when she
05:09told me that she wanted to be a police officer it was not a surprise because Sam has a way with people
05:14and speaking to people and de-escalating situations and just connecting with people and I knew that she
05:23would be amazing at it when she graduated in 2003 she settled on the University of Texas in San Antonio
05:31but during her freshman year 18 year old Samantha starts to feel chronic and unexplained pain she was
05:40having some difficulty being able to really move her left arm and it started to get stiffer it got to the
05:49point where she couldn't move it anymore and we found out that she had sarcoma cancer in her left elbow
05:54she started chemo treatment and we did that for two and a half months she went in every day reporting live
06:05she had that fight in her it was going to be challenging but it was not a doubt in her mind that
06:26she was going to beat it and she does beat it with the cancer in remission Samantha plans to fulfill her
06:32childhood dream of becoming a police officer but she faces another setback the lasting effects of the
06:39cancer and its treatment have left her with limited mobility in her left hand and elbow she's unable to
06:45meet the strict physical requirements necessary to join the force down but not out Samantha looks for
06:53another way to serve her community Samantha graduated in December of 2007 from UTSA she still was thinking FBI
07:06something she wanted to go to New York to pursue a master's degree after graduating from John Jay College
07:15with a master's degree in psychology and criminal justice Samantha heads back to Texas she applies for and is
07:22accepted to work as a volunteer at the Austin Police Department in their victim's advocate unit the
07:30majority of the calls that we got were domestic violence sexual assault and death calls she would
07:36ride out in the city vehicle with me and we'd go to calls together as a victim's advocate she could be
07:44there with those individuals when they needed it in 2012 Samantha's offered a full-time job at the Kyle
07:53Police Department half an hour south of Austin as their first victim services advocate Samantha was there during the
08:02notifications of death of the family to help them bring comfort to the family to guide them through that
08:10difficult time in their lives Samantha works at the Kyle Police Department for just over two and a half
08:16years but now her dream is shattered cruelly taken away from her in the shadows of a dark vacant parking lot
08:24far from home she was shot three times with a small caliber weapon you can see there's a lot of blood that's
08:34all over the place that she was being shot at the police department and she was shot in the driver's
08:40seat and then slumped over there was evidence that she was drug across the front passenger seat and then
08:46ultimately on the ground just outside the front passenger seat of the vehicle and there was no
08:52fingerprints or shell casing it was collected from the crime scene the absence of evidence suggests the
08:59killer or killer or killers made an effort to clean up but what they left behind peaks
09:05investigators interest there was some marijuana placed in the vehicle that was sitting on top of the blood rather than
09:12blood being on top of it so it was obvious that that was placed down after the prime had occurred so it appeared that
09:17the crime scene was staged to kind of make it look like a drug deal had gone bad or something to that nature
09:22also they found in the center console an atm receipt that showed a withdrawal for 100
09:28dollars earlier that same night and approximately 100 in cash in the center console the atm receipt
09:35it told us 9 36 pm she was at the valero gas station at william cannon i-35 and that was significant
09:43because it gave them a starting point to go back to that store and get surveillance video and what the
09:49investigators find next might provide valuable answers there was a phone found inside her
09:55vehicle it was her personal phone the initial thing was to get into that phone and figure out who she
10:00was communicating with and there is something else when examining samantha's body the investigators
10:08realize there is a second victim samantha it appeared was pregnant
10:14it's bad enough that you get a woman prime of her life senselessly murdered you got a baby that didn't
10:24have an opportunity to live a life yet that was also taken one of the first things we want to do is
10:31determine you know who the father of that child is and where are they and what role does that person
10:36play in samantha's life we had a relationship based on sex the thing about her job is that it put
10:44her in proximity to people who were often violent offenders my phone dinged and it said i got her
10:55i'm coming for you i just felt my heart drop through my stomach and i remember thinking
11:03who is screaming like that and then i realized it was me
11:1829 year old samantha dean who was pregnant with her first child has been shot to death in a deserted
11:24parking lot and police have no idea why statistically most victims know their killer so investigators with the
11:33bastrop police department need to find out who the father of samantha's baby is for that they go to
11:40samantha's parents but first investigators have to break the unimaginable news that their daughter has been murdered
11:50when they notified me i didn't quite understand what they were saying
11:54did i just not hear them correctly because it didn't register right away i go to work wednesday morning
12:05two ladies from our human resource office area they come in and they're asking me to come upstairs
12:12and we go up to one of the conference rooms i see my husband and then i saw a lady
12:24and she had on the same kind of clothing that sam would wear as an advocate
12:31all i remember is her saying sam's name and then i remember hearing murdered and i remember hearing
12:40screaming and i remember thinking who is screaming like that and then i realized it was me
13:01they asked me if i knew who the father of samantha's baby was and i did not know
13:07as transparent as sammy was she didn't want to talk about the father the only thing that i did know that
13:19he was a police officer
13:23samantha may not have told her parents who the father of her baby was but investigators are hoping
13:29she confided in friends or co-workers detectives had me come to the special investigations unit at
13:38austin police department to ask me questions and i told them sometime in august she showed up to the door
13:47i let her in and as soon as she walked through the threshold of the door she just started sobbing
13:53and told me that she was pregnant and she said she was embarrassed to tell me um because i knew
14:01who the person was that she was pregnant by and it just immediately clicked for me that it had to be
14:07von trey clark because that's the only person we have in common i knew who it was i didn't have to ask
14:17it was von trey von trey clark is a 33 year old police officer at the austin police department
14:25he and samantha met six years earlier when they were both employed at a pharmaceutical company
14:31it started as a friendship with them and just spurred into a relationship they got along really well
14:39but it wasn't something that was out in the open either because he was dating someone else as well
14:48she was very clear that it was not the situation that she wanted but she had been a cancer survivor
14:56and after the radiation and chemo she didn't know she'd have the opportunity to be pregnant again
15:02and so she was going to keep it and knowing clark i just thought he doesn't want her to do this because
15:12his girlfriend is going to find out that information was passed on to bastrop county and that's initially
15:20what spurred bastrop county to bring voluntary in and you work for the city of austin how long you've
15:26been with ap almost three years first and foremost my condolences uh i know you told me a little bit
15:32on the phone that she was carrying your baby so my condolences but with that said tell me how long
15:39have you known her i've known sam for six years maybe seven years we used to work together at a
15:46different company we didn't have a relationship like we didn't hang out we didn't date or anything
15:50we had a relationship based on sex von trey had been living with uh another woman and for several
15:55years they had a child together and we're also raising another child that von trey had had previously
16:01with another woman when we got pregnant um she told me she was in love with me i didn't i was i
16:08well i didn't feel the same way we had an argument that at that point and kind of we stopped talking for
16:13a while and this happened the night before last can you remember what you were doing probably eight
16:19eight thirties probably about the time the kids go to bed so about nine or so nine thirty i left
16:25because in my current relationship we're going through problems so i left i went to the school
16:33that's we have a school right across the street chilled in my car walked around for a little bit
16:37and i ended up going to the police station what'd you do there i read a report about what time do you
16:43think you got there uh around 11 45 how long do you think you you guess you stayed there 30 minutes
16:5230 minutes what'd you do after that i went home bastrop county detectives work on corroborating
16:58von trey's alibi they pull surveillance cameras and entry records from the austin pd south station
17:05sure enough cameras catch von trey arriving around 12 11 a.m and leaving at 12 40 a.m but the
17:13hours between 9 p.m and midnight are completely unaccounted for investigators believe samantha was
17:20shot shortly after 10 p.m that's a pretty big window of time to be able to commit this crime
17:27since von trey is now connected to the investigation he is placed on paid administrative leave
17:32as standard procedure and when the press gets wind of the fact that a police officer
17:37might possibly be connected to samantha's case the story blows up tonight investigators are trying
17:44to figure out who murdered a member of the kyle police department she was an outstanding
17:49asset to our community her life was taken too soon this became a very intensely followed
17:59story in austin and to have a police officer now tied up in this huge investigation absolutely
18:07changed the scope of everything as media attention grows so does the pressure on law enforcement to
18:15solve the case by now investigators have been able to pull security footage from the valero gas station
18:22where samantha withdrew 100 at 9 36 p.m at the same time von trey clark said he was taking a walk in
18:31his neighborhood the surveillance video showed she came into the store by herself she goes directly to
18:36the atm makes the cash withdrawal and immediately leaves the store the surveillance video doesn't offer
18:43any additional clues but five days after the murder samantha's phone records are now back from the crime
18:50lab we started going through a lot of the phone records and really starting to put the pieces
18:55together the data shows that while samantha was traveling to bastrop from austin she received a text
19:01from an unknown phone number that was the very first time we could find that she's ever communicated with
19:06that number investigators need to know who does that number belong to while the bastrop sheriff's office
19:13follows that lead stephanie burgess samantha's friend and fellow victims advocate at austin pd
19:20gets a startling text my phone dinged and i looked at it and it was a number i didn't know
19:28and it said i got her i'm coming for you i'll show you what a crisis is
19:35and i just felt my heart drop through my stomach and i just started shaking oh my god is there some
19:46killer out there targeting victim services counselors
19:56just five days after samantha dean's murder her friend and fellow victims counselor stephanie burgess
20:03receives a threatening text stephanie doesn't recognize the number but the message seems clear
20:09whoever killed samantha is now after her that message came to stephanie's personal number we want
20:18to know who would have had that number and how the person said that message would have got it i felt
20:23so scared and the chief at the time called me and told me that i needed to go somewhere safe that
20:32was not my own apartment stephanie goes into hiding and the texas rangers joined the case
20:39we were asked to join the case boston pd they wanted us involved so we could navigate those multiple
20:45jurisdictions the team of investigators now has to consider another motive for samantha's murder
20:51revenge the thing about her job is that it put her in proximity to people who were often violent
21:01offenders so was this in some way connected to her profession and law enforcement had she helped a
21:09victim of domestic violence flee a violent situation and was someone retaliating against her for that reason
21:18at this point investigators have two mysteries to solve who texted with samantha on the night of her
21:26murder and who sent the threatening text to stephanie five days later both texts were from different
21:33numbers but detectives have a hunch they're connected they start with the text that samantha received
21:40we obtained the point of purchase information from the cell service provider which indicated that phone
21:45was purchased at the walmart and stafford the morning of samantha's murder and then we obtained the time and
21:52date it was purchased from walmart and then obtained surveillance video of the person that purchased
21:56that phone
22:00we saw a black male wearing a houston cougars hoodie and gray sweatpants enter the walmart go to the phone
22:08section uh get the phone he then went to a register purchased the phone and then left the walmart in a
22:14white toyota car and we were able to obtain that license plate from the video as well the car is registered
22:20to a woman named kyla fisk so once we figured out who kyla fisk was we did a little research on her
22:26through social media and public databases of known associates saw she was in a relationship with a
22:31gentleman named kevin watson and kevin watson bears a striking resemblance to the man seen in the walmart video
22:38watson and kyla fisk both have prior arrests in houston for drug dealing they were on probation
22:46currently for a drug arrest they were selling narcotics so at this point we're trying to figure
22:51out how they're related to samantha do they know samantha in any kind of way and are they connected
22:58in any way to the marijuana found in samantha's car which detectives believe was placed in the vehicle
23:04after samantha was shot we definitely don't think she was out there to buy any drugs or do any kind of
23:10drug deal and when we see drug rifts it's involving cocaine methamphetamine something that has a
23:16significant street value and that further solidified us as this being a setup with the drug angle
23:22officially off the table the team of investigators still needs to determine how or if samantha's
23:29connected to kevin watson and kyla fisk they take a look at the burner phone's call logs once the phone
23:36was activated there was two phone calls placed one was made to kyle fisk which was wasn't surprising to
23:41us kevin watson and kylan's they're in a relationship together but the second phone call was to von tre
23:48clark police are blindsided why is a known drug dealer in contact with a law enforcement officer
23:56investigators subpoena both watson and clark's personal phone records and what they discover is
24:02stunning hundreds of texts and calls between von tre clark and kevin watson over a period of years
24:11we learned that they were very very close with each other they had spent time playing basketball
24:16together went to school together a matter of fact kevin's mom thought of von tre like a son
24:21they referred to each other's brothers and they had a very close relationship despite the obvious
24:25connection between clark and watson investigators decide not to bring either man in for
24:32questioning at this time everything's being done behind the scenes we don't want anybody to know
24:36that we're on to them yet get their guard up investigators next turn their focus to the
24:42second phone the one that sent stephanie burgess the threatening text it was purchased at a walmart
24:48in katie texas 40 minutes from where the first phone was purchased a couple of detectives from austin
24:55police department went down there and obtained the purchase receipt for that phone and also the
25:01surveillance video of the purchase of that phone from the photograph of the two individuals buying
25:07the phone that day that one of them for sure was kevin watson looked like he shaved his beard off but
25:13other than that you could tell it was kevin watson now that we know kevin watson's involved in buying the
25:19phone that sent stephanie burgess the threatening text message and he's bought the phone that was
25:24used in the murder of samantha we've now connected kevin to both of those offenses and what about the
25:31second man could he be involved in making the threat to stephanie the detectives need to identify him
25:39then as we're reviewing the records for the first burner phone the one that was communicating with
25:43samantha on the night of the murder we see that it's also communicating with a third burner phone
25:49we realized that it was activated in austin near clark's residence so we definitely believe
25:54von trey clark was in possession of that phone
26:03investigators in the murder of samantha dean have used geolocation data to place a burner phone in the
26:09hands of von trey clark but the mystery only deepens from there so after reviewing the records for the
26:16phone that von trey clark had we saw where he was communicating with a guy named freddie smith
26:21von trey was in contact with freddie several times up to the murder on that burner phone
26:27we're like here we go again we got another guy to run down look at research and see what his
26:32connection is and all this and through that research investigators learned that freddie smith
26:38also has a burner phone they subpoena its records and discover that it too is communicating with
26:45clark and watson on the night of the murder and from the geolocation data each phone tracks from their
26:52individual residences to the same final location the deserted shopping mall in bastrop where samantha
27:00was shot to death everything fell in the place what's more samantha dean's personal phone
27:07also travels from her home in austin to the parking lot in bastrop and she is not traveling alone
27:16the night of the murder of the burner phone that von trey had was geolocating off the same towers as
27:22samantha's phone which was uh indicative that he was in the car with samantha
27:27detectives feel confident that von trey clark kevin watson and freddie smith are all involved in some
27:38way with the murder of samantha dean but what they don't have is a smoking gun we've got a really
27:45good case on cell phones but obviously we know cell phones can't pull the trigger and so we don't know
27:51who played what role in the murder at this point we're still at a point where we're not ready to go
27:58do any interviews with any suspects we didn't want to spook them while the investigative team
28:02continues to gather evidence thousands of mourners line interstate 35 south as samantha's body is
28:10transported home from bastrop today we have the entire community of kyle that's come together here
28:16to celebrate samantha dean a police escort the body back to san antonio and people were over overpasses
28:28fire trucks police cars um people waving people crying literally in the thousands
28:37on february 13th kelvin and kimberly dean say their goodbyes to their daughter and their unborn
28:44granddaughter whom samantha had planned to name madeline there were people at a funeral that came
28:54that said that if it wasn't for her they wouldn't be here so um that's how i know that you know not
29:02only was she a great person but she went beyond the call she won't be remembered as a statistic she won't
29:09be thought of as kyle police department victim services coordinator whose life was taken
29:14she will be remembered as samantha dean friend and family
29:19samantha is buried with her daughter madeline rose dean while the father of her unborn child
29:26and his associates remain free investigators continue to peel back the complicated layers of samantha dean's
29:35case and soon they make another critical discovery the mysterious man who was with kevin watson
29:42on the day he purchased the phone that sent the threatening text to stephanie burgess has finally
29:48been identified his name is aaron williams and investigators trace the car he was driving to his
29:56in-laws once we identified aaron williams and started looking at his phone record you could see the
30:02communication with him and kevin watson on a pretty regular basis but they need more so investigators
30:09try a new approach they set up surveillance and a wiretap we did approve to go up on all the phones of
30:16von trey clark kevin watson freddie smith and aaron williams it's all happening live so you're listening
30:23to phone calls and seeing text messages as they happen the problem is no one is talking
30:29we realized early on that they're using gaming systems to communicate so at that point we kind
30:37of devised a plan to get a court order to interrupt von trey's internet service to force them off the
30:43gaming system and on to their phones so we can monitor that communications to get them talking
30:50investigators use a tactic called tickling the wire tickling the wire basically means we've got to have
30:57some kind of initiating event to get them to start talking about the crime so in this case that
31:01initiating event was for a pd to go down there and talk to aaron williams's mother and father-in-law
31:06about why their car was in bass drop on february the 8th which we believe would spark a conversation
31:12to kevin aaron williams immediately calls kevin watson and says we need to meet we can talk about
31:19something yeah from there it kind of kicked things off they've got kevin watching talking to some other
31:24people too about it it worked pretty well i got them talking but we still need somebody to break
31:44investigators in the murder of samantha dean catch a break while listening in on a wiretap of aaron
31:50williams and kevin watson in one conversation aaron angiously tells kevin that they have to meet in
31:57person to discuss an important matter after that in-person meeting they later did talk on the phone
32:03about what kind of story they were going to give detectives if they came asking him about why he was
32:07in bass drop and then you learn a little bit about them from their conversations and it becomes pretty
32:15obvious that aaron williams is really no criminal and so ultimately that's who brent and i focused on
32:25the rangers agree it's time to start moving in they bring aaron williams in for questioning
32:32we quickly let him know that this was regards to a murder case and that's when aaron williams became
32:40very uncomfortable came very upset realizing that he had gotten himself into something that
32:47he probably shouldn't have but he still didn't want to give us any information the rangers are able to
32:53hit aaron williams with a charge called retaliation because he was present when kevin watson bought the
33:00phone that sent stephanie burgess the threatening text they hope a stint behind bars will give him time to
33:07consider his future and incentive to talk while aaron simmers in jail the surveillance finally pays
33:15off when rangers observe kevin watson showing up at freddie smith's house he's over there for a little
33:23while and they both get in the car and leave together and so we had a houston police department
33:30conduct a traffic stop on kevin watson and freddie smith after they left his house they found a fair
33:36amount of drugs in the vehicle they were both placed under arrest by houston police department
33:40for possession narcotics the pieces of the puzzle are falling into place but investigators still don't
33:47have enough to charge von trey clark with anything then a call comes in that changes everything
33:57we got a phone call from aaron williams attorney advising that he wished to now tell us what he knew
34:04did he tell you he went to bastrop that night yes or no yes what did he say happened who went with
34:11him and what happened um freddie went and
34:16it's all right aaron you're doing the right thing he told me it went and uh he told me
34:30that they killed the girl did he tell you who who actually pulled the trigger no he didn't tell me
34:36who you said they yeah they went out there to kill that girl
34:42aaron williams had told us about how von trey clark had gotten a girl pregnant in austin and she did
34:50not want to have an abortion and he didn't want her to have the baby and he needed this girl gone
34:55von trey was in a relationship so von trey did not want her to know about him getting samantha
34:59pregnant he was not going to be able to hide this any longer if she was going to seek child support
35:05and so kevin and freddie had been paid by von trey clark approximately five thousand dollars each to
35:09help von trey murder samantha dean the pressure is mounting with freddie smith and kevin watson behind
35:16bars and aaron williams singing like a bird it looks like they're closing in on von trey clark but
35:23justice will have to wait an interview had been set for von trey clark to sit down with internal affairs
35:33investigators from the austin police department who were investigating his conduct there's a time
35:40date and place for the interview except there's one problem von trey clark has skipped town
35:49von trey clark is likely in west jakarta indonesia disobeying direct orders to stay

36:31von trey clark skips town to jakarta indonesia a non-extradition country looking to put himself
36:38beyond the reach of the law just because the country is a non-extradition country doesn't mean
36:46they can't extradite you in this case i'm sure indonesia was not in a big hurry to be harboring

37:05just days later kevin watson is also charged with capital murder he decides to take a plea deal and
37:13tell all we learned that kevin watson essentially acted as an agent for von trey clark that kevin
37:22watson recruited freddie smith to come to austin and be the gunman that night on the night of february
37:303rd 2015 clark uses a false story to get samantha out of the house at 9 30 pm trey was telling her
37:39that he was trying to buy a tablet and so his thing was picking up the money for the tablet and that's
37:45why they were going to the atm they stop off at the valero where she withdraws one hundred dollars
37:51but while samantha's in the store under the impression she's getting cash to buy a tablet
37:56von trey is in the car using samantha's phone to make it look like the cash is for a drug deal
38:04how do you know clark was texting from her phone okay after samantha leaves the valero gas station
38:09she proceeds towards bastrop once there von trey clark and samantha drive into a shopping center
38:15parking lot we drive to go meet trey we pull up in the parking lot there's the black charger in the
38:20parking lot freddie smith got in the back seat i think she believed that he was jumping in
38:25to show the tablet and collect the money then freddie aims his gun at the back of samantha's head
38:33he attempted to shoot samantha but the gun malfunctioned and when it didn't go off he was
38:38able to hide it fast enough and tell her hey i forgot the charger to the tablet i gotta i gotta
38:43leave and go get it and that gave him time to go fix the malfunction in the firearm according to
38:49watson it takes several minutes for freddie to fix the jammed gun then kevin drops freddie back off at
38:56samantha's car where he slides into the back seat kevin drops him back off and he tells me
39:02about how he was in the back seat and he shot her twice bam bam and then trey wanted a gun and then
39:12he handed trey the gun and trey was he said something crazy and then shot her once when you
39:19say that said something crazy any any idea what that would be something like you or something
39:25everything that kevin said seemed to line up with what our investigation showed when word gets back
39:35to von trey clark that watson flipped he's ready to make a deal to avoid the death penalty he pleads
39:41guilty on december 16th 2019 and is sentenced to life in prison without parole for his cooperation with
