Transcript
00:00As a simple kid born in the little town of Uvalli, Texas, it never occurred to me that I would one day be considered for political leadership.
00:08Matthew McConaughey will not be running for Texas governor after all.
00:11The Oscar winner announced the news on his Instagram account on Sunday, saying that elected office was something he was no longer considering.
00:18It's a humbling and inspiring path to ponder. It is also a path that I'm choosing not to take at this moment.
00:25In a three-minute-long video, McConaughey talked about the values of service and responsibility and problems in local and national politics,
00:32noting that he wants to focus on serving the people of his home state in ways other than pursuing public office.
00:38I'm going to continue to work and invest the bounty I have by supporting entrepreneurs, businesses and foundations that I believe are leaders,
00:47establishments that I believe are creating pathways for people to succeed in life.
00:51The move comes despite a Dallas Morning News poll this week showing that he would beat Republican incumbent Greg Abbott by eight points in a head-to-head matchup.
01:00Local political experts had previously declared that the actor stood a good chance of winning,
01:04but others have warned that McConaughey would heavily risk his brand and acting career if he were to run.
01:10In addition to his acting gigs, McConaughey is also already heavily involved in his foundation Just Keep Livin',
01:16which helps underprivileged high school students.
01:18As for his upcoming acting slate, he has the animated Sing 2 confirmed for December 22nd.
