00:00:49The show will be very good, great in places, too long,

00:00:52and you will feel the length of it when one match or another gets affected.

00:00:56This is what I say constantly, before and after.

00:01:00All of which is to say that this will change, and one could argue, accomplish nothing.

00:01:07Which might, you know, depict it, position it as a bit of a waste of time.

00:01:15So, that's my overall thoughts on Full Gear.

00:01:19I'm going to do two things here.

00:01:21One is have a rant.

00:01:24Two is establish a little format for how I'm going to approach this preview, okay?

00:01:30I established, imposed upon myself, rather, a rule about, I can't remember, maybe one or two years ago,

00:01:40where, like a lot of people, I was sick to a profound level of the constant tribalism.

00:01:48And it's not just the WWE fans in bad faith talking about AEW.

00:01:53I get almost more annoyed when it's the other side, like, people constantly talking about AEW.

00:02:02And I was guilty of this, hence why I've imposed a rule on myself.

00:02:07Is it, say, the do tell stories.

00:02:09You're wrong, actually.

00:02:10Of course they're wrong.

00:02:12They're talking in bad faith, or they're misinformed, or they're willfully ignorant, or whatever.

00:02:16I just got really sick of it.

00:02:17And I used to go back and think about or read my old stuff and think,

00:02:23God, I was always, like, writing in such a reactive, defensive way, trying to put points across.

00:02:31Like, it was almost insecure, and I was addressing people who were never going to listen anyway.

00:02:36Rising to the bait.

00:02:37Yes.

00:02:37So I've tried really hard not to do that.

00:02:39So I'm not doing that, and I'm not about to do that in response to WWE fans saying it's bad or whatever.

00:02:50I'm actually going to talk about, very quickly, and again, if you're not on X, this must be rubbish audio.

00:02:59I'm sorry, but I feel like I have to do this, because I'm going to make a broader point.

00:03:03I tweeted my thoughts on Dynamite yesterday, okay?

00:03:09Oh, I saw this.

00:03:10Something to the effect of a three-hour go-home show allergic to promos building a four- or five-hour pay-per-view is why it is what it is.

00:03:25It being AEW, it is what it is, being this sort of constant malaise, not the best numbers, not the most buzzed-about product, doesn't really feel hot.

00:03:36And then in the replies, this must have got shared around some loser Discord or other.

00:03:43Because I got, he got a quote tweet, and then it must have got shared in some Discord or the AEW official Reddit or wherever,

00:03:56because it went ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, quote tweet, quote tweet, reply, reply, reply, reply, reply, reply, reply, reply, reply.

00:04:01Of just people, freakazoids, taking the tweet so literally.

00:04:07Michael, I think you'll find there was promos on the show.

00:04:10Yeah, there were, of course, there were, right, Hammond Page got a promo, Ricochet got a promo, there were several backstage promos.

00:04:19And when I mean allergic to promos, I'm not saying, right, that there were no promos.

00:04:27No one came near a microphone on this show.

00:04:28Yeah, I'm saying, like, there were no really effective, rousing promos that truly sold me on the idea of a match feeling special,

00:04:37worth paying a, not, like, inexpensive amount of money for, right?

00:04:44There were promos, those weren't good enough.

00:04:46They just felt a lot of the times like the thing, the thing you have to do,

00:04:51because it's a go-home show and it's a wrestling show.

00:04:54Like, there's no real passion, no real thought, no real importance, da-da-da-da-da.

00:05:00Talking people into the building.

00:05:01Yeah, exactly, Jesus Christ, I mean, this is f***ing 101, right?

00:05:06It's the most basic principle there is.

00:05:10So just, I know the listeners, come viewers of this podcast, get it.

00:05:17That's why they come back to us.

00:05:18And I'm not addressing you guys, I'm just having a little self-indulgent rant.

00:05:23Please permit me, I have tried hard, I think, to not do it too often, right?

00:05:27And then the responses just boggled the mind.

00:05:30It ranged from usual, it's fine, shut up.

00:05:34Well, no, it isn't.

00:05:35Yeah, it is fine, that's a problem.

00:05:37We know it can be better than fine.

00:05:39Yeah, I know.

00:05:40I know, yeah, I'm mid-rad bro.

00:05:44I saw these replies and I got angry on your behalf.

00:05:47So it ranged from, shut up, it's fine, to, why do we need promos?

00:05:54Promos, wait to the Pancake Waffles response.

00:05:59Oh my God, it's the worst.

00:06:01So if you don't, I've explained the law of Pancake Waffles.

00:06:04There is a tweet that best sums up, best distills Twitter,

00:06:08of Twitter is the only place where genuine sentences that make sense can get misinterpreted.

00:06:17And then the quote is, no bitch, that's a whole new sentence.

00:06:21So I got a lot of that in response to my tweet and it was really, really, really irritating.

00:06:29Oh, so you want Town Hall WWE style promos.

00:06:32If you like promos, you don't want wrestling, there's another company for you.

00:06:36Oh yeah, that's what I'm about.

00:06:37I love WWE.

00:06:39I'm like, Vladimir, f***ing Kozlov.

00:06:41Like, Jesus Christ almighty.

00:06:46I know I'm on the wrong platform.

00:06:49I know rationally, get off, don't engage.

00:06:52It's a complete waste of time.

00:06:54I know that if you somehow found a tool that would allow you to filter out any tweet that was sort of,

00:07:04thought, you know, for an example, I saw a tweet and I'm like,

00:07:09God, I wish I could block this genre of tweet, right?

00:07:15I saw a tweet and it was something, it was like,

00:07:17it was a quote tweet of a WrestleTix rundown of WWE's SmackDown's ticket sales for this Friday.

00:07:27And they were healthy, really good.

00:07:30And I was like, I thought the Fed wasn't hot anymore.

00:07:33And I was like, if I could just get rid of that genre of tweet.

00:07:36And I thought AEW didn't tell stories.

00:07:38There wouldn't be a wrestling to where I left, but I would love to just get rid of it, right?

00:07:43I'm not saying I want endless, they call them Town Hall promos, right?

00:07:48I think it was the Deadlock podcast that is coined that term.

00:07:52Where it's just a total exposition dump, the likes of which I bury on the Raw and NXT reviews every single goddamn week.

00:08:01Where they establish the premise, regurgitate the premise, do a volley of exposition dumping,

00:08:10and then get the soundbites in for the video package.

00:08:13It doesn't really advance.

00:08:14It's not a plot.

00:08:15It's not a story.

00:08:16It's pretty bad writing that just, everything feels like it's in stasis.

00:08:23Funnily enough, I do not want that.

00:08:26Right.

00:08:27What I want is not a 30-second backstage promo with, like, Avanade that the Babes of Wrath or Brodido saying,

00:08:40we're going to win on Saturday.

00:08:44See you later.

00:08:45I don't want that.

00:08:46It accomplishes nothing.

00:08:47All it does is remind you, all right, there's a pay-per-view on Saturday, and we're going to have a match on it.

00:08:55Great, I knew that already.

00:08:57Here's what, the broader point I want to make, and I know, and again, I know these freakazoids on Twitter, on X,

00:09:07do not account for all of the audience, and to illustrate that, there was discourse about Anna Jay getting hard done by in the tag team tournament.

00:09:18What?

00:09:19That match in the building got no heat whatsoever, because Anna Jay, and, you know, there's booking that goes into it, but isn't over, right?

00:09:30You are making up problems to talk about, you are making, you've got a victim complex, people are trying to tell you things,

00:09:39like, oh, the stories aren't that engaging, the stories aren't that hot, the wrestlers who you say deserve it aren't getting reactions in the real world that you refuse to participate in, whatever, right?

00:09:50Shout out to, very quickly, shout out to Matthew Ormsby, I meant to share this with you yesterday, who was at Boston.

00:09:55The title of the email he sent me, by the way, was, spreadsheet booking Jones from Boston.

00:10:03He says, hey, you bitter bean-eating bastards, coming to you from Wicked Pitha, Boston, after going to the, again, ass arena last night.

00:10:12Gives us a nice summary of all the show, I'll share it with you properly afterwards.

00:10:15Collision recap, women's tag was bad.

00:10:18Yeah, of course it was, of course it was.

00:10:19That's, that's a different story, but I guess I just wanted to rant, and I guess what I'm trying to tell people,

00:10:29or what I'm trying to make clear, is that I can see a great, or a lengthy, or a match that aspires to be very, very good in the ring,

00:10:44on free TV, every single week, to the point where I'm numb to it, and I'm spoiled by it.

00:10:52What I want from a go-home show, what I want from AEW, and I'm not particularly getting, right,

00:10:58is an incentive to buy the event, is a reason to get truly emotionally invested in what I'm seeing.

00:11:09And I think one very basic way of accomplishing that, right, and this is, I'm teaching my nana how to suck eggs here,

00:11:17is by having live, in-ring promo segments, and it's not as if the roster isn't incredibly gifted at this,

00:11:27to sell me, to deprive me, to make me anticipate the match,

00:11:32because what, what is the difference between the matches on Dynamite,

00:11:37and this really broken, at this point, idea that they, a lot of them should be great,

00:11:43okay, and the matches on the pay-per-view.

00:11:46Matches on the pay-per-view cost money, okay, so you need to differentiate the matches on your television,

00:11:55from the matches on your pay-per-view, because one of them costs money, right,

00:12:00and the matches that cost money, I am meant to care about more than the matches that don't cost money, right.

00:12:08How do you convince me to go, ah, that match is worth paying for, okay,

00:12:16oh, well, the match will be good, nah!

00:12:19The matches on TV, that's a selling point, they're meant to be good, often they are.

00:12:25The matches that cost $50, which is a denomination and a currency of money,

00:12:32have to feel special, they have to feel personal, they have to feel great,

00:12:39they have to feel like, God, you cannot miss this thing.

00:12:43Seismic.

00:12:44Seismic.

00:12:45Things are going to change.

00:12:47What changed at the WrestleDream? Not much.

00:12:49These are going to have big-time ramifications, okay.

00:12:52The hatred between these two wrestlers is, in fact, so palpable and intense

00:12:57that you need a steel cage, you need to pay money,

00:13:00because they're going to do things that they wouldn't necessarily do on TV.

00:13:02Hell, they're not allowed to do on TV.

00:13:05And Handman Page, right, did a decent job.

00:13:08I would say decent, you know, not amazing, a decent job of doing that, right.

00:13:13Brodido backstage, and I will say they have told that story well enough up to that point,

00:13:18but this Mark Briscoe, they just re-established the premise backstage again.

00:13:24For the second consecutive pay-per-view cycle,

00:13:28Mark Briscoe did not get a live mic in front of his people who adore him,

00:13:35and he didn't get the opportunity to rile them up, send them in a frenzy,

00:13:39have them believing in him, okay.

00:13:42One of the main reasons I'm excited about this show that much.

00:13:44And imagine if they just emphasized it.

00:13:47I don't want to explain, and here's the thing,

00:13:49some of those responses were like, oh, do you need things spoon-fed?

00:13:52Yeah, no, I don't.

00:13:53I've been actively campaigning for that not to happen

00:13:56for my entire goddamn career in wrestling media.

00:14:00You wrote a book about it.

00:14:01I wrote a book about it.

00:14:03I wrote the lists about it before AEW even existed, okay.

00:14:08But what did they do, Briscoe and Fletcher?

00:14:11They basically just re-established the stakes in a little cute little backstage pre-tape

00:14:15that you'll never remember, and that ultimately accomplished nothing.

00:14:18They already did it.

00:14:21AEW does this a lot.

00:14:22It's not high art.

00:14:23It really isn't.

00:14:24Why can't he do it in front of live fans, right,

00:14:30who are going crazy for this match?

00:14:33And if they can, like, ramp it all up to a fever pitch,

00:14:37get the referee core out, get the security guards,

00:14:40get my blood boiling, get my sense of anticipation into overdrive.

00:14:45So I've got fed up.

00:14:47Really, I did get fed up with this total.

00:14:50It's still fine, actually.

00:14:51One particular reply guy was like, oh, that's fine, it's fine.

00:14:56And they've never had that many in-ring promos.

00:14:59It's like expecting a car to be a plane or whatever.

00:15:03It's like they had quite a few memorable ones in 2021, as I recall.

00:15:092021.

00:15:10Okay.

00:15:11God damn hot and great.

00:15:14Okay, well, what of it?

00:15:16And the response was something along the lines of,

00:15:20all right, they had them in 2021.

00:15:22What's the difference?

00:15:23And I was like, well, 2021 is a more hot, more buzzed about,

00:15:26talked about, better, more popular, yeah.

00:15:30And they were like, oh, well, so?

00:15:31I was like, do you not want it to be good?

00:15:33Yeah, yeah.

00:15:35Like, you're going to miss the end of the world

00:15:37if you don't watch this pay-per-view.

00:20:03or interrupted

00:20:04face-to-face promo,

00:20:07but they have Redmond,

00:20:10with,

00:20:11and they usually do it

00:20:11during the international commercials

00:20:13where she'll speak to a wrestler

00:20:15in front of a crowd.

00:20:16They need to do way more of that.

00:20:18If they're not going to do it,

00:20:18AEW should just nick it,

00:20:20the old Oakland position,

00:20:21right?

00:20:21Rene Paquette's done it on occasion.

00:20:23This should be a weekly feature

00:20:24of AEW Dynamite.

00:20:26It really,

00:20:26really should

00:20:27because the Austin 316 promo,

00:20:29right?

00:20:29If you go back and watch it,

00:20:30he is nominally a heel.

00:20:32He will stay nominally a heel

00:20:34for about at least

00:20:35a year

00:20:36or just under a year.

00:20:40But he's so magnetic.

00:20:43He is so compelling.

00:20:44He is so intent

00:20:46on taking over

00:20:47the professional wrestling world

00:20:49that when he starts talking,

00:20:52it's magic.

00:20:52Go and watch it.

00:20:54He gets these sort of boos.

00:20:55The fans are kind of playing along.

00:20:57All right,

00:20:57okay,

00:20:58well,

00:20:58he's a heel

00:20:58and he's insulting

00:20:59all my favorite

00:21:00WWE superstars,

00:21:02which he says

00:21:03with such incredible disdain.

00:21:04But then as he slowly

00:21:06gets that rhythm

00:21:07and he's just

00:21:09like awful,

00:21:11vicious,

00:21:12contemptuous

00:21:13towards Jake Roberts,

00:21:15who's getting this like

00:21:16sorry ass,

00:21:17dragged up the aisle

00:21:18like the loser

00:21:18that he is in that night.

00:21:20And then he starts being

00:21:21really kind of

00:21:22darkly funny with it.

00:21:24and you can see

00:21:26his traps

00:21:27getting towering

00:21:28as he starts talking

00:21:29and he's got this

00:21:31hypnotic rhythm

00:21:32to the delivery.

00:21:34You can hear the laughter

00:21:34when he starts going,

00:21:36oh God,

00:21:36whip your ass.

00:21:38You can hear

00:21:38the pockets of the people

00:21:40laughing

00:21:41and responding to him.

00:21:43And I know

00:21:43it might be considered

00:21:45a ridiculous analogy

00:21:46and I'm not saying,

00:21:47you know what

00:21:47AEW should do every week

00:21:48as a stable of dynamite,

00:21:49the best promo of all time.

00:21:50Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:21:51I'm just telling you

00:21:52that in front of a crowd,

00:21:53even for two minutes,

00:21:55no town hall.

00:21:56But if you did something

00:21:57like that sort of position,

00:21:59you can hear that crowd

00:22:01and you start to get

00:22:02that sense of

00:22:03he is going to be

00:22:05something special.

00:22:06And look,

00:22:06that might be rose tinted

00:22:07because as we all know,

00:22:09right,

00:22:09Austin 316

00:22:10wasn't this overnight sensation.

00:22:12Some of the stuff

00:22:13he was doing in the summer,

00:22:14he's begging off

00:22:14against The Undertaker

00:22:15on the very next Raw.

00:22:17He's working like

00:22:18a really pasta Yoko Zuna

00:22:19on the SummerSlam pre-show.

00:22:20I'm not trying to be

00:22:21too romantic

00:22:22or fake about this.

00:22:24But if you listen

00:22:24to that promo,

00:22:25you can tell why,

00:22:26all right,

00:22:27this guy's getting a push.

00:22:28You can tell why

00:22:28everyone's like it.

00:22:29Bret Hart is like,

00:22:30I'm going to work with him.

00:22:32Because you can hear it

00:22:33bubbling up

00:22:35in that crowd

00:22:36and it's,

00:22:36it's absolutely glorious.

00:22:38And that's just an example.

00:22:40It might be unfair

00:22:41of you can do it

00:22:42in two minutes

00:22:42in front of a live crowd.

00:22:44And here,

00:23:09and they're being wholesome

00:23:10and they're chest bumping

00:23:11and they're still over.

00:55:28is just straight up fun yeah mid-card fair like they've uh had dax harwood be a complete dick too of

00:55:39all people bandidos like excessively adorable grandmother dax always been a dickhead um he was

00:55:49really funny um playing off wiki steamboat yeah and his fake and contrived is the the big sort of

00:55:59spectacle moment of brodie king punching through a wall that existed to be punched through the

00:56:05performances were so good the idea was so cool that i didn't actually care for once how contrived it was

00:56:09this is dax harwood in a great heel run and cash has been great as well but dax harwood being a dickhead

00:56:21and getting rumbled for it getting his just desserts the baby face catharsis the baby faces are cool and

00:56:29superhuman and like if they can just get their hands on ftr they'll rip them to shreds limb from limb

00:56:36but they've the uh heels have done little dickhead tricks to make that not happen until the pay-per-view

00:56:44um i wish it got sold a little bit more like can you even remember what brodido said on this pretty

00:56:54uh the only thing i can remember is like their sort of catchphrase which is like we'll never stop

00:56:58fighting yeah did off the top of your head we only watched it like less than 48 hours ago did bandido

00:57:05go you can't do that to my grandma no i will kill you probably should otherwise it's just cutesy

00:57:33clever but it's it's mid-card fair it's been a really entertaining bit of business great personnel

00:58:06um like that in itself can create a compelling match not just the story that brings those

00:58:13characters together like brodido have been one of the cool success stories this ftr renaissance i hated

00:58:20dax hallward for a couple of years there i think he's amazing now to the point where i can see the

00:58:26business artistic case for either team i agree so i'm going to be completely put on ftr for me yeah

00:58:32i've loved brodido and i think you could run this one this is a genuine rematch you could have at like

00:58:37world's end uh because whether she went through shenanigans i don't know bandidos grandma turns heel or

00:58:44whatever or or just some shenanigans with family members that give them the victory but then they're like

00:58:53no no now you're going to get it at world's end and then maybe they like there's a i think brodie

00:59:00king but bandido i don't need to talk on it's obvious i think brodie king is sensational i think

00:59:05brodie king should be in the world title conversation next year so i think there's a version of events

00:59:11where ftr win here rematch at world's end ftr retain brodie turns on bandido and is established as

01:14:47feel special it's a big time title versus title match this is a revisit of the series that oh god

01:14:54mercedes money can actually do something great and not just that's quite good but why isn't it better

01:14:58because that's what the thing was in aw for her for a while i'd know i don't know if they've

01:15:03collision it collisioning it and a bad go home angle hasn't helped but it wasn't really white

01:16:08got a problem with this and then they made style and look like a gig on collision again like i think

01:16:12you know what the bookings actually been actively pretty bad it's pretty bad i am i thought the final

01:16:20there's tony con on the media call when someone said like can stat become this sort of level of

01:16:24a star of a of a tony storm of a saves money he said i think she is the biggest one like yeah so

01:16:36big i think the stipulation is probably too big for this pairing i think the aw world title so i

01:16:43reckon if tony storm hadn't happened it would be a lot better but she's set this bar that's just simply too

01:16:56tony storm's a much bigger star there again doing this so soon after all in texas feels like an error
