During a recent interaction, NYC Mayor Mamdani addressed whether Donald Trump’s populist campaign style influenced his own political strategy. Mamdani explained that while he and the President come from very different parts of the political spectrum, both campaigns tapped into the same core concern dominating voters’ minds: the cost-of-living crisis. He revealed that many New Yorkers who supported Trump in the city consistently cited rising expenses—groceries, rent, utilities, and childcare—as their biggest worries.

00:00President Trump, we heard them speak about cost of living.
00:02We focused on that same cost of living,
00:04and that's where I am really looking forward
00:06to delivering for New Yorkers in partnership
00:08with the president on the affordability agenda.
00:11You know, we had, both of us,
00:13we had the highest inflation in the history of our country
00:15the last four years under the Biden administration.
00:19The president was the president,
00:21and those are also part of the message of our campaign
00:23was to take on a broken politics of the past,
00:26and I ran against a number of candidates
00:27who represented different versions of that past.
00:30And what we found time and again is that working people
00:32were left behind in the politics of our city.
00:34From different parts of the political spectrum,
00:37you're both populists, though,
00:38and I just wonder to what extent the president's campaign style,
00:42his techniques, his social media use,
00:45inspired any part of your campaign?
00:47Well, I actually told the president that, you know,
00:49so much of the focus of our campaign
00:51has been on the cost of living crisis,
00:53and when we asked those New Yorkers
00:54who had voted for the president
00:55when we saw an increase in his numbers in New York City
00:59that came back to the same issue,
01:00cost of living, cost of living, cost of living.
01:02And they spoke about the cost of groceries,
01:04the cost of rent, the cost of con ed,
01:06the cost of child care.
01:07And too often, politicians are looking to lecture
01:10to New Yorkers what they should care about
01:11as opposed to listen.
01:13And when we spoke to those voters
01:14who voted for President Trump,
01:16we heard them speak about cost of living.
01:18We focused on that same cost of living,
01:19and that's where I am really looking forward
01:22to delivering for New Yorkers in partnership
01:24with the president on the affordability agenda.
01:27And I think we have to work a little bit.
01:29We talked about con edison.
01:30We have to work a little bit on getting the prices
01:32because, you know, we've gotten fuel prices way down,
01:35but it hasn't shown up in con edison.
01:38And we're going to have to talk to them.
01:39You know, if we're sending them fuel
01:42at a much lower price than it was a year ago,
01:44which is true, we have to get con edison
01:47to start lowering their rates.
01:48Absolutely.
01:49Mr. President, the cost of living
01:51is something that you and Mr. Mondani seem to agree on.
01:54Democrats have run New York City for a long time,
01:58Mr. Mondani.
01:59Do you see Democrat policy specifically
02:02as being a problem?
02:03And I'd like that to be a question
02:05that both of you could answer in New York City.
02:07Look, I think that there are many things in our city
02:10where we have to own the responsibility of it,
02:12things that existed long before the president
02:15was the president.
02:16And those are also part of the message of our campaign
02:18was to take on a broken politics of the past.
02:21And I ran against a number of candidates
02:22who represented different versions of that past.
02:25And what we found time and again
02:26is that working people were left behind
02:28in the politics of our city.
02:29And what we're looking to do
02:30is put those people right back
02:31at the heart of our politics
02:32so that we don't have a situation
02:34where we're in the wealthiest city
02:36in the history of the world
02:38and yet one in five can't even afford $2.90
02:41for a MetroCard.
02:42Mr. Mondani?
02:43You know, we had some interesting conversation
02:46and some of his ideas really are
02:48the same ideas that I have.
02:50But a big thing on cost,
02:52you know, the new word is affordability.
02:55Another word is just groceries.
02:56You know, it's sort of an old-fashioned word,
02:58but it's very accurate.
03:00And they're coming down,
03:01they're coming down high.
03:02They were, you know, we had, both of us,
03:04we had the highest inflation
03:05in the history of our country
03:06the last four years
03:07under the Biden administration.
03:11And we've got inflation down now
03:13to a normal number.
03:14It's going to go even a little bit lower than that.
03:15Katie, do you have something?
03:16I was pregnant.
