In an unexpected show of warmth and support, President Donald Trump praised New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, calling him “different” and someone who “has a chance to really do something great for New York.” During a series of exchanges filled with friendly energy, Trump defended Mamdani’s travel choices, promised to be “a big help,” and even said he would “absolutely” live in Mamdani’s New York—contradicting narratives pushed by parts of the far-right press. The unusual political moment has sparked widespread discussion about what this alliance could mean for the future of America’s largest city.

00:00I think he's different, and that can be in a very positive way, but I think he's different than,
00:04you know, your typical guy runs, wins, becomes mayor maybe, and nothing exciting. He has a great
00:09campaign manager standing over there. The president was the president, and those are also
00:14part of the message of our campaign was to take on a broken politics of the past. We don't have
00:18a situation where we're in the wealthiest city in the history of the world. We had some interesting
00:25conversation, and some of his ideas really are the same ideas that I have. You know, we had,
00:30both of us, we had the highest inflation in the history of our country the last four years
00:34under the Biden administration. I was going to ask exactly that. Why do you think there's so much
00:39more, you know, so much excitement around what they do in some form of... Because I think he's
00:43different, all right? I think he's different, and that can be in a very positive way, but I think
00:48he's different than, you know, your typical guy runs, wins, becomes mayor maybe, and nothing exciting.
00:55Because he has a chance to really do something great for New York. New York is at a very critical
00:59point, and he does need the help of the federal government to really succeed, and we're going
01:05to be helping him. But he's different than, you know, your average candidate. Hey, he came
01:10out of nowhere. I said, he has a great campaign manager standing over there. He came out of,
01:16he came out of nowhere. What, did you start off at one or two? And then I watched, I said,
01:21who is this guy? He was at one, then he was at three, then he was at five, then he was
01:25at nine, then he went up to 17. I said, hmm, let's get a little bit of trust there, right?
01:32And then all of a sudden, he wins a primary that nobody expected he was going to win. It's
01:36a great, a great trip. I mean, it's an amazing thing that he did.
01:40I see Democrat policy specifically as being a problem, and I'd like that be a question
01:45that both of you can answer.
01:47Look, I think that there are many things in our city where we have to own the responsibility
01:52of it, things that existed long before the president was the president. And those are
01:56also, part of the message of our campaign was to take on a broken politics of the past.
02:01And I ran against a number of candidates who represented different versions of that past.
02:04And what we found time and again is that working people were left behind in the politics of
02:09our city. And what we're looking to do is put those people right back at the heart of
02:12our politics so that we don't have a situation where we're in the wealthiest city in the history
02:17of the world, and yet one in five can't even afford $2.90 for a MetroCard.
02:22Mr. President?
02:23You know, we had some interesting conversation, and some of his ideas really are the same ideas
02:29that I have. But a big thing on cost, you know, the new word is affordability. Another
02:35word is just groceries. It's sort of an old fashioned word, but it's very accurate. And
02:40they're coming down, they're coming down high. They were, you know, we had, both of us, we
02:44had the highest inflation in the history of our country the last four years under the Biden
02:50administration. And we've got inflation down now to a normal number. It's going to go even
02:54a little bit lower than that.
