A strong 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck near Dhaka on Friday morning, sending tremors across Bangladesh and parts of eastern India. The USGS reports the epicentre in Narsingdi, roughly 50 km from Dhaka, at a shallow depth of 10 km. In Kolkata, residents rushed out of homes as buildings swayed for several seconds, triggering widespread panic. Videos circulating online show people gathering outdoors as tremors rippled across the city. Shocks were also felt in Cooch Behar, Dakshin Dinajpur, Uttar Dinajpur, and cities such as Guwahati, Agartala, and Shillong. Despite the intensity, no damage or injuries have been reported so far. A Test match between Bangladesh and Ireland in Dhaka was briefly halted before play safely resumed. Authorities are monitoring the situation for potential aftershocks.
