President Donald Trump welcomed New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani—who had once called Trump a “despot”—for their first Oval Office meeting. Trump, who had previously labeled Mamdani a “communist,” surprised critics by praising the 34-year-old and highlighting shared priorities on affordability, crime, and housing.
Mamdani described the talks as “productive,” focusing on New Yorkers’ struggles with rent, utilities, and basic costs of living. Trump even defended him against tough press questions, signaling a rare moment of unity that has sparked debate across the political spectrum.
As critics question the sudden warmth, both leaders insist their new cooperation is about helping New Yorkers, not ideology.

00:00We had a meeting today that actually surprised me.
00:03He wants to see no crime, he wants to see housing being built,
00:07he wants to see rents coming down, all things that I agree with.
00:10We discussed ICE and New York City, and I spoke about how the laws that we have in New York City
00:15allow for New York City government to speak to the federal administration for about 170 serious crimes.
00:21The concerns that many New Yorkers have are around the enforcement of immigration laws
00:25on New Yorkers across the five boroughs.
00:28And most recently we're talking about a mother and her two children,
00:31how this has very little to do with what that is.
00:34What we did is we discussed crime more than ICE per se.
00:39We discussed crime, and he doesn't want to see crime, and I don't want to see crime.
00:43And I have very little doubt that we're not going to get along on that issue.
00:47He wants to, and he said some things that were very interesting,
00:50very interesting as to housing construction, and he wants to see houses go up.
00:55He wants to see a lot of houses created, a lot of apartments built, et cetera.
00:59And, you know, we actually, people would be shocked.
01:04But I want to see the same thing.
01:05Mr. Mondami, the anti-Israel protesters.
01:08Jack?
01:08Mr. President, I want to know, one of the policies as well that Mayor Lech Mondami talked a number of times about
01:15on the campaign was shifting the tax burden for property taxes from what he called minority communities
01:21to white-based communities and putting more taxes on white people.
01:26I also noticed that in your acceptance speech you didn't mention anything about America or Christians
01:33or white people in general.
01:34And so I didn't know if that was one of the policies that you guys had spoken about.
01:38We focused on affordability.
01:40We focused on the cost of living crisis.
01:42What I will say is that I am very much interested in property tax reform because what we see right now
01:47in New York City is a system that is so inequitable that it can't even stand up in court.
01:52And the President and I spoke about the importance of not only building more housing
01:56but also making sure that regulation of housing is something that is manageable to actually get through
02:01and not the cause of yet another weight that we see in our city.
02:04But to be clear, you're continuing this idea of race-based property taxes.
02:07No, to be very clear, the use of the term was a description of neighborhoods, not a description of intent.
02:14So you intend to tax the whiter neighborhoods more?
02:16No, we intend to create a fair property tax system because we want a New York City that is not only fair and equitable
02:20but also one that every New Yorker can afford.
02:22Mr. President, anti-Israel protesters just targeted a synagogue in New York.
02:31Are you concerned about Jewish New Yorkers feeling welcome and safe in the city?
02:36And President Trump, you've threatened to cut off federal funding to New York City.
02:40What policies would prompt you to do that?
02:42Would that be city-run grocery stores?
02:43Would it be something else?
02:45Well, I think if we didn't get along, whether it's cut off or just make it a little bit difficult or not give as much,
02:50we want to see, I used the term, we don't want good money going after bad.
02:55We just, we don't want that to happen.
02:58I don't think that's going to happen.
03:00And I did say, you know, subject to what policies are being said, we had a meeting today that actually surprised me.
03:08He wants to see no crime.
03:10He wants to see housing being built.
03:12He wants to see rents coming down, all things that I agree with.
03:15Now, we may disagree how we get there, the rent coming down.
03:18I think one of the things I really gleaned very much today, he'd like to see him come down ideally by building a lot of additional housing.
03:28And that's the ultimate way.
03:29He agrees with that, and so do I.
03:31But if I read the newspapers and the stories, I don't hear that.
03:36But I heard him say it today, and I think that's a very positive step.
03:40No, I don't expect, I expect to be helping him, not hurting him.
03:44A big help, because I want New York City to be great.
03:48Look, I love New York City.
03:50It's where I come from.
03:51I spent a lot of years there.
03:52Now I'm right here.
03:54We took a big setback with a mayor that we had named de Blasio.
03:58I thought it was a tremendous setback for the city.
04:01I think this mayor can do some things that are going to be really great.
