In a stunning shift of tone, President Donald Trump offered unexpected praise for New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani after their first in-person meeting at the Oval Office on November 21, 2025. Despite months of heated attacks—calling Mamdani a “radical left lunatic” and predicting a wealthy exodus—Trump now says he’d “absolutely” feel comfortable living in New York under Mamdani’s leadership.

Pressed on the sudden turnaround, Trump said the two leaders “agree on a lot more than expected” and even joked about past insults, including Mamdani calling him a fascist. Their meeting reportedly touched on affordability, public safety, and federal-city cooperation, signaling a surprising thaw after Trump’s earlier threats to cut funding or deploy the National Guard.

For now, the Big Apple has something rare: a warm presidential nod from the man who still calls it home.

00:00I heard him say it today, and I think that's a very positive step.
00:03No, I don't expect, I expect to be helping him, not hurting him.
00:07A big help, because I want New York City to be great.
00:11Look, I love New York City. It's where I come from.
00:13I spent a lot of years there. Now I'm right here.
00:17We took a big setback with a mayor that we had named de Blasio.
00:21I thought it was a tremendous setback for the city.
00:24I think this mayor can do some things that are going to be really great.
00:26Mr. President, you're a billionaire.
00:34You have a different address nowadays than you used to, but you used to call New York City home.
00:38Would you feel comfortable living in New York City under a Mamdani administration?
00:42Yeah, I would. I really would. Especially after the meeting. Absolutely.
00:46What makes you comfortable?
00:48We agree on a lot more than I would have thought.
00:51I think he's, I want him to do a great job, and we'll help him do a great job.
00:56You know, he may have different views, but in many ways, you know, we were discussing when Bernie Sanders was out of the race,
01:03I picked up a lot of his votes, and people had no idea, because he was strong on not getting ripped off in trade
01:08and lots of the things that I've practiced and been very successful on, tariffs, a lot of things.
01:15Bernie Sanders and I agreed on much more than people thought.
01:18And when he was put out of the race, I think quite unfairly, if you want to know the truth,
01:25many of the Bernie Sanders voters voted for me.
01:29And I felt very comfortable, frankly, in seeing that and saying that.
01:32And, you know, it just turned out to be a statistical truth.
01:37But, no, I feel very comfortable.
01:40I would be, I would feel very, very comfortable being in New York, and I think much more so after the meeting.
01:45Yes, please.
01:45Thank you, Mr. President.
01:46I have a question for you, but a very quick one for the mayor.
01:49Why did you fly here?
01:51Aren't trains greener?
01:53I'll use every form of transit, and I want to make sure that they're all affordable in New York City,
01:57and that's why making buses fast and free is a centerpiece of work.
02:00There is a bus that goes.
02:00I know, but if he flew, that's a lot quicker, too.
02:03You know, I mean, he's working very hard.
02:06For him to be, that's a long, that's a very, that's a very long drive.
02:10I'll stick up for you.
02:11You know, the plane takes you 30 minutes, and driving takes you a long time.
02:15We had a meeting today that actually surprised me.
02:17He wants to see no crime.
02:19He wants to see housing being built.
02:22He wants to see rents coming down, all things that I agree with.
02:25Now, we may disagree how we get there, the rent coming down.
02:28I think one of the things I really gleaned very much today, he'd like to see him come down,
02:35ideally by building a lot of additional housing.
02:38That's the ultimate way.
02:39He agrees with that, and so do I.
02:41But if I read the newspapers and the stories, I don't hear that.
02:46But I heard him say it today, and I think that's a very positive step.
02:50No, I don't expect, I expect to be helping him, not hurting him.
02:54A big help.
02:54Because I want New York City to be great.
02:58Look, I love New York City.
02:59It's where I come from.
03:00I spent a lot of years there.
03:01Now I'm right here.
03:04We took a big setback with a mayor that we had named de Blasio.
03:08I thought it was a tremendous setback for the city.
03:11I think this mayor can do some things that are going to be really great.
03:13There will be topics that we disagree on.
03:15I think we'll probably come to a conclusion, and ultimately, he'll convince me, or I'll convince him.
03:22You know, it's for the good of New York.
03:24Ultimately, it's for the good of New York.
03:25I don't care about affiliations or parties or anything else.
03:29I want to see if this city could be unbelievable, if he could be a spectacular success, I'd be very happy.
