00:00Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadija Main is urging regional corporations to do their part towards enhancing national security.
00:10There's a perception that national security is a national government issue and not a local government issue. It really goes to speak about how important it is to have municipal police, safer communities, secure recreation facilities.
00:29No child must be gandong in a recreation facility when they're just there to play. Our community, our young people in our NGOs, our cricket clubs, our football clubs must have relationships with our municipal police officers.
00:44She's inviting all regional corporations to come forward with a plan and she's giving her word that the government will meet them halfway.
00:53You have the opportunity not to build a building in your yard or put aside a room for municipal police, but to build an entire municipal police post.
01:06Corporations, I have issued an open invitation for you to come forward with your land, tell me your plan and we will get funding.
01:16Your funding is not only limited to the funding given to you by the subvention from the government, but clearly from this project as well, public-private partnership.
01:27So I urge you to be open-minded because Tunapuna Piako needs its own municipal police station and further police posts in several of those outlying areas that I mentioned.
01:41Minister Amin was speaking at the commissioning ceremony for Tunapuna Piako Regional Corporation's Municipal Police Post, which has been recently upgraded and renovated to the tune of roughly $500,000 and boasts a fully equipped surveillance room.
01:59The system is not about watching people. It is about protecting people. Early detection prevents crime. Quick response really does save lives. And when the criminals know that the police are going to be quicker in their response, it is a deterrent to those who think about doing something wrong.
02:21So real-time monitoring really, you know what it does, it brings peace of mind to the citizens, to your burgesses.
02:30All 14 regional corporations recently received a compliment of municipal officers.
02:35Minister Amin is urging the officers to focus on their core functions and she's reminding them of the chain of command.
02:43Minister Amin, Litter Prevention, Litter Prevention, All Those Illegal Dumps, that is your work, that is not TTPS work so much, you know. So they will take you to go and give out tickets, but when you ask them to come go with you to deal with an illegal dump, look for them.
02:58look for them. So I'm saying, focus on your core functions. We will continue to strengthen
03:06you to do that. We will work hand in hand with TTPS, but we must not neglect our cooperation,
03:14which is our priority. And there is sometimes a perception when we follow too many policing
03:20rules, rigid policing rules, that municipal police officers should not take instructions
03:25from a civilian. Local government is different. Our municipalities are headed by our chairmen,
03:32mayors, and councillors, and administrated by our CU. So that issue should not arise.
