00:00I was very excited about the consideration, but in order for my son to even be considered
00:05I have to be a part of the Grammy U program, which not any and everybody could get into,
00:09so first you have to sign in on your website, you have to tell them about yourself and what
00:14you do, and to be accepted, one of the Grammy U members in the Recording Academy has to
00:20see it and want to accept you into it.
00:23I was very excited about it, and I was stunned to see that someone in the Recording Academy
00:29actually saw my application and wanted to accept me.
00:33Written and performed by Jolly and produced, mixed, mastered and engineered by Grammy Award
00:40winning producer and fellow Tobogonian Delroy, D-Roy Andrews, the track stands as a bold fusion
00:47of lyrical honesty and medallic innovation.
00:51At just 20 years old, Jolly is also the only Tobogonian member of Grammy U, an exclusive
00:58program of the Recording Academy, only open by recommendation from voting members.
01:05Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in music and sound recording, and competing as a Division
01:12One track and field athlete at the University of New Haven, Jolly continues to represent Tobago
01:19internationally through both his artistry and discipline.
01:24So, Unlock is about finding the key to success and not letting your scars determine your future,
01:30not letting your scars weigh you down from reaching that goal.
01:34Okay, so Unlock was not supposed to be made.
01:36I went out my way to try to record that song.
01:39I remember back in February, I walked in the music room while it was snowing, and the music
01:44room is like a good two miles away from a dorm room.
01:50So, I remember going there, and that's how the song was recorded.
01:55They didn't let me use the studios because I have to be a junior in order to use the studio,
02:02so I had to record on my phone.
02:03Meantime, Tobagonian Delroy D-Roy Andrews is a multi-platinum Grammy Award winning producer,
02:12also at Tobago, assisted in making Mills dream a reality.
02:16TV6 News spoke to Andrews two years ago when he came to Tobago on a mission, sculpting for talent.
02:23Today, he spoke to us at Stone Tower Studios in Lambeau, Tobago.
02:29From the search, came across a young man by the name of Kajali Mills, him and his father.
02:35They saw the interview and sought me out.
02:38His dad knew John Arnold and got my number, and we got in touch.
02:42From that, continued to listen to his music, and I was like, you know what, we're going
02:45to collaborate, we're going to get some things done.
02:48Been back and forth for about a year or two, exchanging ideas, and one of the songs we collaborated
02:54on has just been put in for consideration at the Grammy Awards, and that would make him
03:01the first, the youngest, all right?
03:04And on top of that, he's also in Grammy U.
03:07He was successful in getting him into Grammy U, and extremely happy about that, so some
03:13history has been made here.
03:14How do you feel as a person?
03:16Mission accomplished?
03:18Mission accomplished.
03:18I'm ecstatic about it, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for Kajali and,
03:24you know, and other young individuals here in Timbake, which, again, the intent was to
03:28let people know about the opportunities that exist to take advantage of them.
03:32Elizabeth Williams, TV6 News.
