Is it important to surround Roman Anthony? Should Red Sox spend big on offense?
Transcript
00:00that would be on the foul territory podcast okay ken rosenthal alex cora speaking from
00:05puerto rico where he just celebrated his 50th birthday i am told uh and you have don't you
00:14curtis you may have brought this up uh earlier so you may need credit oh man um but you have
00:21a similar situation with roman anthony that you have with drake may which is that you need to
00:29take advantage of the opportunity with a if you have a once in a uh once in a century guy
00:37uh which i think a lot of the insiders say roman anthony is you got to put the parts around them
00:43and take advantage while you have them and have them at a of a bit of a discount right don't you
00:48like now is the time like ken uh laird who was in here this morning filling in for chime because he
00:53was late uh his lead was uh alonzo or bregman like why do we have to make uh why do we have to make
01:03that choice like why can't it be both because you have an extraordinary opportunity in front of you
01:09with roman anthony because winning is no longer the most important thing what is reducing salaries
01:14all around the league making money and getting the cap in at the end of the season that is what
01:19john henry's number if you could tell john henry you gave him the option today you win the world
01:24series or you get a salary cap he would take the salary cap without even blinking when he wants
01:29alonzo over bregman yeah if you got pete alonzo i wouldn't be it wouldn't bother me one bit and they
01:36but you still would have to get a pitcher whoever that pitcher is so if you got pete alonzo and a pitcher
01:41then isn't that a good offseason i i would like all three like i and maybe that's selfish
01:49well or greedy right but i would like you'll build in the seaport i don't think bregman is
01:54going to find the value out there that he thinks or his that scott boris thinks i think that i think
02:00overall in general these free agents are going to find that the uh the giant bag of cash is not what
02:08they think it's going to be especially coming off injury well but just in general like i they are
02:13working very hard to reduce the the salaries in major league baseball and i i do believe like you
02:20had guys 13 guys that were tendered that one that uh one time 22 one year 22 million dollar
02:29uh offer which normally none of them would take and i think four of them have taken it like i think
02:35that they're so i don't understand why you don't get bregman back and go out and get a pete alonzo
02:42and trade for a trade for a legit number two because bregman's not worth 40 million dollars if
02:48bregman wants to come back for 30 million i get i bet the red sox would be all for it but you have
02:55the money like this is the pittsburgh pirates of all people are supposedly all in on shorbs
03:04right like if they have the money for an ace and for shorbs then you're the boston red sox you have
03:12the money yeah but am i wrong about that you're saying shorbs and an ace but he's not worth 40
03:17million no one's gonna pay him 40 million dollars explain to me the difference between 30 and 40
03:21million uh 10 million what's that mean to you uh this team why does that such a lot of it means a
03:27lot of money to owners it's just it's a stupid thing to do but then what do you say but 30 million is
03:32smart no but that's what your value is but then what do you say to people like greg who says you
03:38have all this this money from rafael devers right you gave him so like you're using it to it's not
03:44worth if you're using it for i told you pete alonzo and that pitcher it's not worth paying a guy 40
03:50million just because you have 40 million dollars well you have you know what you got you got 40 million
03:55dollars well why not give pedro some of that it's not worth giving money to guys that are not
04:02going to be worth that value but if you win the world series everybody's worth it like david price
04:07was not worth the contract the red sox gave him but that was his value no it was nope it was 40 million
04:13north of the second closest bidder right but when he signed his initial contract which was seven years
04:18i forget what the number was that initial value that he signed that's what the market set no they
04:25set the market by 40 million dollars that's what he was worth when he was coming off that from the
04:31tampa bay rays no the second highest bidder was 40 million less than the red sox they went out of their
04:36way to overpay right david price and you know what it was an awful deal until 2018 or yeah 2018
04:44and they won the world series but you overpaid for a guy who was producing you're not he wasn't
04:50david price wasn't when he was with the tampa bay rays i mean he wasn't producing at that level he was
04:56one of the best pitches in baseball the right the right so you pay you set the market now you're
05:01afraid to do it what's changed over you overpay for a guy who's one of the best pitches at his
05:07position during that time when you look at you overpaper a guy that gets the guy that's cheap that's
05:12the future and roman anthony to play his best when you what value do you put in that so then
05:16so then you're you're not it's a courtney's point you're not giving roman anthony any credit so the
05:20only way he plays good is if oh no i didn't say alex bregman is here i just go by what he said
05:25roman anthony said that ken said that earlier too and jason veritek said that same thing on this show
05:30that when it came to you're always looking for the long ball when it came to power hitting
05:35that it was alex bregman wasn't any of the uh the driveline guys that noticed it it was alex
05:41bregman who adjusted the the barrel uh position my question for the job save that drop uh that
05:50adjusted the barrel position what the players are greedy as f who would you rather get money
05:57john henry or alex bregman or pete alonso like i always find that so weird why do we judge athletes
06:05when they're paid but not owners when they're cheap i want you to be greedy as a player listen
06:10bregman go out there and try to get what you can but from an owner's standpoint if i was an owner
06:14i'm not paying you 40 million there are there are a considerable amount of texters who say wiggy is
06:21right on this 30 million tops is what bregman is worth i mean 40 million and 30 million what's the
06:26difference 10 million they're really good the notion that anybody hitting a baseball is actually worth a
06:31million dollars is absurd but in this context what we're talking about is a team that has plenty of
06:36cash has several needs and a guy that seemingly fit in perfectly as a guy that could play every day
06:43and when he was out was a guy that supported the future of the franchise and it's a guy that alex
06:48cora relies on do you remember what this team looked like when bogarts first left and cora was like a sad
06:54puppy because the captain the guy that was his messenger was no longer here that's what bregman provided
07:00for cora last year i mean also who's gonna buy who's gonna buy the rookies their new suits
07:06right good point it is i am aware that like a rhode island texter good morning and hello to
07:14good morning you incredibly loyal rhode island people good morning um says greg they're trying
07:21to lower salaries and you want to just give him an overvalued contract that is what drives salaries up
07:27to the point they're at now so all right uh it takes one knucklehead owner to overpay the market
07:32you have one knucklehead owner who happens to own the los angeles dodgers who is willing to overpay
07:39the market over and over again so that that that that exists yeah but if you're gonna overpay the
07:44market overpay it for guys that you go okay i don't mind giving shohei 40 million dollars a year
07:50i don't mind paying yamamoto 300 million dollars or whatever it was over 12 years i don't mind giving
07:56mookie betts twitch twitch mitch has a poll up on this on the social medias and the results are
08:03pretty interesting now let me ask you this twitch mitch has been with us for a long time doing an
08:10unbelievable job i feel like on our our twitch uh content broadcast of the show on twitch and youtube
08:16yeah would you like to give him my time i have arranged so that mitch's uh has a microphone available
08:22in the twitch dungeon i would love that yeah shine can we go to mitch right now and see how this works
08:27mitch hey everybody can you hear me yes how's it going down there hey it's going pretty good yeah so
08:33bregman right now is at 45 and alonzo is at 45 uh 55 for alonzo 45 for bregman so it's a lot
08:43closer than i thought it was going to be but so if you had to choose between bregman and alonzo
08:50the majority of red sox fans want pete alonzo yeah that's what it looks like right now i feel like
08:58when you have bregman though with the leadership and for future free agents you i agree with you
09:04greg that you need to get both of them but i think that it's important to re-sign bregman going forward
09:10so that future free agents can also be like okay this is where i want to stay yeah i would do pete
09:14alonzo yeah i would how do we would you do pete alonzo mitch
09:20i'm not ready for a drop right now how do you feel about mitch not not just sharing results
09:29but editorializing a bit with his own personal opinion no problem with it love it okay can we
09:34can we call this the poll desk so mitch just slides in over at the poll desk and weighs in on all of our
09:39twitter polls and because we do quite a bit of them slides down the poll only if we would like
09:44to be mocked everywhere we go in public i don't i mean i think they mock us i mean people have
09:49people have investigative reporters they have desks yeah of course yeah the twitter poll desk
09:56i don't i don't love it all right i'll workshop it i'm just you know i'm still half awake over here
10:01is this like a robert redford movie about watergate i mean i like it's not 1970 no like when
10:07you're in the newsroom yeah all right i'm dead rather let's hope let's head over to mike at the
10:11sports desk like that kind of thing let's head over to twitch mitch with the twitter poll deck
10:15down in the dungeon oh the dungeon i have an idea what how about when he has an opinion it's time
10:21for a mitch pitch oh okay here you go i like that bitch you have another poll up though correct
10:26yeah tmi one sec so the other poll is if you're starting a team like curtis said are you taking
10:34joe burrow or are you taking drake may and that one's a landslide right now yeah drake may all day
10:40boom quickie twitter poll thank you dale wow but interesting is when curtis had that question earlier
10:46in the year it was much closer to 50 50 right may is running away with it yeah all right great work
10:53mitch you're the best mitch thanks mitch also great job keeping all any and all boobs off of
10:58twitch excellent job on that all right thank you guys all right there's mitch live from the dungeon
11:05he's a good radio voice too does really if you if you say something bad about mitch i'm gonna end
11:12yeah i know seriously he kept us on air earlier what is a radio voice anyways when people always say
11:18that like he has a great radio he doesn't have an annoying voice i'm gary lapierre i'm gary lapierre
11:24this is kevin from quincy hello kevin hey good morning how's it going everyone what's up
11:31uh i think you need to get alonzo if you look at every world series team that the red sox won they
11:37had a right-handed power hitter peter alonzo hit 53 home runs in shea stadium which is a ginormous
11:44stadium and uh that was his rookie year he's now 30 years old you get a corner infielder you get a
11:50first baseman you're all set at that position for the next three or four years he's going to bring
11:54us a title it's a no-brainer and then you just you're you're okay with uh bregman being gone and
12:03that's you got marcello meyer over there or whatever you're going to do bring in manny you want to help
12:09somebody hit the baseball no manny want to be a hitting coach so you're telling me that bregman's
12:15the only guy that can help guys fix their swing no i just think it's the intangible stuff it's like
12:20the second it's a veteran guy who embraced his role here with a bunch of young guys like i don't know
12:26why you discount that like i'm not discounting that you always talk about the you know the the
12:33patriots locker room guys holding other guys accountable and so i don't know how you don't
12:39see the value in that i see value which comes with alex bregman i think not to speak for wiggy but it's
12:45not discounting it it's even if you've got a guy like jason baratek here who pointed out the fact
12:49that bregman helped roman anthony at the same time when we talked about the intangibles that costing 40
12:55million dollars he basically laughed at it yeah so it's just he was laughing more about the the what
13:01coaches are paid i think but that's to his point so if you're willing to give a guy you know an extra
13:0810 million for helping out roman anthony i would say roman anthony seems like a guy that kind of would
13:16fall in line a good young clubhouse guy that's not gonna rock the boat and would listen to people
13:22so i don't think like you need somebody police in the locker room for a guy or the clubhouse for a guy
13:28like him i just think that when you look at if if bregman wants to come back for 30 million over the
13:36next four years so be it happy with that but you you walked away from 80 million which tells me
13:42you want much more than that so you're gonna give me there may not even be baseball in 2027 so
13:50i mean we may not even be alive i think there's gonna be do you think there's gonna be baseball in
13:552027 curtis as the savant i don't think there's gonna be baseball in 2026 hopefully by 2027 we
14:01have baseball but who knows yeah baseball players you don't think there's gonna be baseball this
14:06upcoming season oh i'm sorry so at the end of the season you're right i thought it was 2026 already
14:12yes i but i i don't have many years left don't take one away from me sorry my my and by the way i'm
14:17an idiot it was 23 minutes is what i did the 5k in 17 minutes someone calling you fraudulent they
14:22were saying that was elite i my math score on the sats was not as good as ken's um but uh there
14:29was not going to be baseball in 2027 it's the it's the worst kept secret in all of sports you were
14:35out uh wick was here and he talked about friends he had in the baseball industry and in premier league
14:40and how the the cap is coming yeah and baseball players their unions a lot stronger so those guys
14:46can hold out and say you know what hey we have the money yeah we have the money to uh to to kind of
14:51do that so i i'm just talking about when you start to look at this team because you'll have
14:57marcelo meyer will come back right he could play third base you figure out what your second base
15:02situation is and then you kind of go you kind of go from there and i think that if they were to go out
15:08and say i don't know what what are you figuring out when it comes to your second base position like
15:12maybe you bring back christian campbell no or maybe maybe what you do is that that was a failed
15:19experiment what about a guy like bo bichette right he's younger than bregman you might get him for a
15:26little bit cheaper than bregman i so if you go out and get a guy that you say okay we're gonna put
15:32at second base we're gonna leave meyer at third base we're gonna bring in pete alonzo to play first
15:37space and we added another legitimate pitcher
15:40you
