Is there growing concern involving Roman Anthony in left field? What are your thoughts on Anthony thus far (offense and defense)? What should the Red Sox do with the outfield? Keep it the same?
Transcript
00:00Roman Anthony, after last night's bounce pass to the cutoff guy, and so nothing is going right for the Boston
00:11Red Sox.
00:12No.
00:14It's not.
00:16Those games, if you remember the Chuck Knobloch yips in the World Series, some of the best TV I've ever
00:22seen.
00:23Just laughing my ass off at the Yankees, and now it's karma.
00:26Is there concern for you when it comes to Roman Anthony, or is it just do we pause because he's
00:37young, or is there concern that maybe it could be a mental thing?
00:42Well, I do feel like there's been, you know, there's that mantle of the future and how great he's going
00:51to be and the number one prospect in the minor leagues.
00:56And I, but I have felt like when we've had the opportunity to speak with him or when you hear
01:05him, that he was well-equipped to handle that.
01:09But maybe that's, maybe he's not.
01:12Maybe he's, he is clearly now, it's back-to-back times we've heard from him post-game where he seems
01:18to be putting a lot of it on himself.
01:20And he speaks the pot well, but I wonder, speaking the pot well, and you probably know this, Mago, because
01:26you're in that, those locker rooms of clubhouse.
01:29Like, some guys can speak the pot well, but then they go out there and they're still thinking about it,
01:34and it affects their performance.
01:36You know what I mean?
01:37Where some guys speak it and then actually go out there and say, all right, the hell with this.
01:41I'm not going to have this happen again.
01:43There is nothing more fascinating to me in professional sports or any sports than the yips, the thing, whatever you
01:52want to call it.
01:53Because that, and that's what, that's what freaks me out about Roman right now is after the game, you got
01:59Alex Cora saying it's mechanics.
02:01He says he's totally healthy.
02:03Where did that come from?
02:05It's all mental.
02:06It's entirely mental.
02:07It has nothing to do with his physics.
02:08I mean, like physical ability.
02:09I mean, this is a guy who was on top of the world a month ago, is the face of
02:14the World
02:15Baseball Classic, being praised by the greatest players in the game, and now he can't hit a
02:19cutoff guy to save his life.
02:21It's just unbelievable.
02:23It is unbelievable that this team is 2-8 and the future superstar of the sport can't even
02:30throw a ball to the infield.
02:32Worst throw, 978 Texer wants an answer.
02:36Roman's from left field last night or Shime's spiral?
02:39Oh, I thought you were going to say, I thought you were going to say Drake made in the Super
02:43Bowl.
02:45The more you watch Shime's spiral, the more you see the flick of the wrist that he has,
02:49and that's my favorite part of it.
02:51That is.
02:52Had you ever held a football?
02:54Yeah.
02:55It was a short space.
02:56He was two feet away, and he was catching with one hand.
02:58I was trying to make it as easy as possible for him.
03:00This is Steve from Waltham.
03:04Good morning, Steve.
03:06Good morning, guys.
03:07Hey, I'm talking about Roman, Anthony.
03:09I don't think there's any place in him for the outfield.
03:11This is twice in the past, I think, four games where he's made a terrible throw to home play.
03:15I think one was against the Padres.
03:17I think the only future he has, if you want to get him in the field, is you've got to
03:20find a way to transition him to first base, coach him up over there, get him there, or
03:24he's just a DH.
03:24He doesn't have the arm for the outfield, in my opinion.
03:28I mean, this is the future of the entire franchise that you're talking about.
03:34He just looks awkward out there, too.
03:35I mean, when he's fielding a fly ball, he doesn't look natural.
03:37He doesn't look like a natural outfielder.
03:39I don't know what it is, but he doesn't have the arm for it.
03:42I don't know.
03:44That was quick.
03:45Time to move him to first base.
03:47He's had at least three of these kinds of throws, because he mentioned the one against
03:50the Padres.
03:51There was one in the Reds series as well, and Roman said himself that he thought it was
03:55like the fourth time that this has happened.
03:58I can only think of those three.
04:00The Cincinnati one was a throw to home that was way out.
04:05Yeah.
04:06Correct?
04:07Yeah.
04:07Okay.
04:07So it's just been off.
04:08But yeah, he did acknowledge four of them.
04:12So there's clearly some type of issue when it comes to that, right?
04:15You know, there's clearly an issue, which we had no clue of this, because obviously in
04:21spring training, they talked about how good the players were in the outfield, right?
04:25And we didn't know nothing about this.
04:27And a lot of that stuff, it comes down to the pressure.
04:31But this is at home.
04:33Like, imagine when he's at Yankee Stadium.
04:35Yeah.
04:35Yeah.
04:36That's going to add even more pressure.
04:38Red Sox stats, the account on Twitter, had the 2026 maximum throwing speed from outfielders
04:45and listed Roman Anthony as one of the top two with Willi Abreu.
04:49They were both 91 miles per hour.
04:51So that's where, like, again, to me, it's kind of scarier if it's not a physical thing.
04:56Like, if it was a physical thing where he's got arm soreness or something, then you could
05:00say, okay, sit him for a little while, get him right.
05:03But this is something else.
05:05Yeah, no, this is all...
05:06Do they have my first pitch at Fenway in there?
05:08They don't.
05:08They don't.
05:09I can dig a little deeper and see if they have that.
05:11They said, no, this is not slow motion.
05:13It was...
