Bigfoot: An evaluation of giant footprints and other evidence which some believe proves that the half-man, half-animal creature really exists.
Transcript
00:00A giant, hairy creature, part ape, part man. Indians call him Sasquatch. They believe he is as gentle as he is powerful and mysterious. He's been seen many times in the rugged mountains and deep woods of the Pacific Northwest. The encounters have not always been peaceful.
00:23In 1924, a small group of men were working a mine in a canyon near Mount St. Helens in Washington. One night, the miners took their weapons inside and bolted the door. They thought they were secure for the evening. Outside, something strange was happening. The cabin was under attack. Boulders rained on the roof, and someone, or something, was trying to break in.
00:53The miners later described their attackers as large, hairy apes. The siege lasted several hours.
01:05穿 it many days.
01:09Right up there.
01:34Oh, over there.
01:35The miners escaped injury that night.
01:41The area now known as Ape Canyon is one of the many places in the Northwest where man continues his hunt for this elusive creature we call Bigfoot.
02:05Many people do not believe in Bigfoot, but a lot of people do, and some of them feel they must kill it to prove it exists.
02:26This series presents information based in part on theory and conjecture.
02:38The producer's purpose is to suggest some possible explanations, but not necessarily the only ones, to the mysteries we will examine.
02:45To the Indians living along the Columbia River in Oregon and Washington, or those in Canada, there is no need for proof of Bigfoot.
02:59Sasquatch has been a part of Indian lore as long as they've inhabited this land.
03:03Some anthropologists believe that the creature could have come to the northwestern part of the United States along with the Indians, across a land bridge that once connected Siberia to Alaska.
03:15The newcomers to this country have seen Bigfoot in an area ranging from northern California to southwest British Columbia.
03:22To the Indian, Bigfoot carries a mystical significance.
03:28Sometimes it's difficult to tell where myth ends and reality begins.
03:35In our modern world of concrete and steel, we're far removed from the Indian lore of Bigfoot.
03:41It's hard to imagine any corner of our crowded world where a giant man-like creature could roam free.
03:46Yet there's persuasive evidence that Bigfoot is real, and that urban man may be close to his first meeting with this living legend.
03:56It is felt by some scientists that Bigfoot falls somewhere in this progressive chart of man, a giant hominid related to but not like modern man.
04:07According to this theory, Bigfoot would have pursued a course of evolution separate but parallel to his human cousins.
04:13Dr. Grover Krantz is an anthropologist at Washington State University.
04:19Its locomotion is the human design, so we know it's probably our closest living relative.
04:25But in terms of anything of mental characteristics, no, it's not human.
04:31So it is a mixture of ape and human characteristics.
04:34And if you want to call that a missing link, that's fine.
04:36Now, this is a cast of a jawbone of something that I think is actually the Sasquatch.
04:44This is a jaw that's anatomically in between human and ape in its teeth, but it's much larger than any living ape, much larger than a gorilla, for instance.
04:56These are known from fossils about a million years old in China, and it has been named Gigantopithecus.
05:02And it has approximately the characteristics that our Sasquatch has.
05:07So I'm inclined to think that this species just simply is continuing today.
05:12The most convincing visual evidence of Bigfoot is a film taken by Roger Patterson in Northern California.
05:19Dr. Krantz believes it to be authentic.
05:22I've examined the film many times, watching it forward, backwards, stopped, framed, measured, and everything.
05:27And all of the anatomy of the creature is perfectly consistent.
05:32It just simply does not fit with a man wearing a suit.
05:35In fact, a suit of that size, we can establish exactly how big it is.
05:39There's no way a man could fit into it.
05:41The shoulders and chest are simply too wide.
05:44The feet are properly designed for carrying that kind of body weight,
05:49and that doesn't make any sense unless you've got a body of that size.
05:54And Patterson could not have faked any of this stuff.
05:58I talked to him about some of the things I saw, and he didn't even understand what I was talking about.
06:02Reports of Bigfoot sightings in the Northwest go all the way back to 1811.
06:07There have been some in other parts of the United States,
06:10but most have come in the area from Northern California to British Columbia.
06:14In 1882, a British Columbia newspaper published the story of railroad workers
06:21who saw and captured a creature they called Jackal.
06:26No one seems to know what happened to that creature,
06:29but the hunt for others has brought headlines all across the United States.
06:33There have been an estimated 2,000 reported sightings of Bigfoot.
06:38Half of those are considered fakes.
06:40The other half are very real,
06:43especially to those who live in this rugged country
06:45and who've seen with their very own eyes,
06:48seen something strange and sometimes frightening.
06:53I'd been down to my folks' and Cindy was with me,
06:57and we decided it's time to go home, and so we left.
07:01Lewis Allway and his daughter Cindy of Stevenson, Washington,
07:05returning home one night from visiting his parents,
07:08came across something they'd never seen before.
07:12It was about, oh, 10, 30, 11 o'clock at night,
07:16and Cindy was sleeping on the floor, I mean, on the seat,
07:20and I come around the corner there, and there it was.
07:24It looked to me like it had just come over the top of the guardrail there.
07:27I woke her up just when she got to see it just before I ran to brush,
07:32and at first I thought it was a bear,
07:34but when it took off across the road on its hind legs,
07:37I just couldn't believe it.
07:38I hunt and I fish, and I see a lot of game all the time,
07:43and it looked like something that I'd never saw before.
07:45Three or four years ago, we received a call in the late part of the fall.
07:56The people who own this cabin back here said they'd found some tracks
08:01of what they thought was a large animal,
08:03and we came out and investigated that.
08:08Back here by the tree, we found several tracks that were real large,
08:15way larger than a human.
08:17I sure wonder about it.
08:20Sheriff William Klausner of Skamania County in Washington
08:23has investigated tracks and talked with eyewitnesses.
08:27He's seen too much to be totally skeptical.
08:29The most unique thing about what we've learned from this
08:34is that the people who have either written or called
08:37who have experienced the same kind of thing or had seen tracks
08:41mention a strong sulfur smell, and that's real unusual.
08:48As Sheriff Klausner says, the smell description is not unusual.
08:53James Strahan and Harold Teske recently saw something
08:56on the roadside near Colton, Oregon.
08:58There was a big, huge object on the left of the road,
09:02and I rolled the window down in the car,
09:06and this thing was approximately three and a half, four feet wide,
09:12about six, seven foot tall.
09:16And the odor of this animal, after I rolled the window down,
09:21was so offensive that I couldn't remain there any longer.
09:24And I was scared, too.
09:26And I've been around the mountains and around animals a lot,
09:30and this thing truly scared me.
09:33And so I got out of there and rolled the windows up,
09:38and the car went on home.
09:39And the odor of that animal stayed in that car until the next morning.
09:46It was still in there.
09:46One mile outside the Dalles, Oregon,
09:53several members of the Bigfoot Investigation Project and Information Center
09:57climbed to an observation point.
10:00They're led by Peter Byrne,
10:0250-year-old adventurer and former big-game hunter in Nepal.
10:07Byrne has dropped his rifle in favor of camera and binoculars.
10:11For five years, he's headed the Bigfoot Investigation Project
10:15and stalked these north woods,
10:18checking out every story and every set of tracks.
10:21His prey is elusive.
10:24We will talk to the person who says that they've seen one.
10:28We will talk to their family, perhaps to their employers or employees.
10:33We'll talk to the local police to see if they know them,
10:35to find out if the person is simply a joker, a hoaxer of some kind,
10:39or if they're a person of reputation and of known integrity.
10:44And then we'll go and see the person.
10:45We'll interview them.
10:46And, of course, we'll try and get to the place of the actual sighting
10:49as quickly as possible.
10:51One of the most credible sightings took place near Mount Hood, Oregon, in 1974.
10:57Two loggers, Jack Cochran and Furman Osborne,
11:00were working in an area of fallen timber.
11:04Cochran explains what he saw.
11:05I looked off towards the woods
11:08and I saw these two long legs moving at the edge of the timber.
11:16And as this thing walked, it walked with a glide
11:19and then it reached an arm out
11:22and kind of touched the tree as it walked by.
11:26And I saw these wide shoulders
11:28and then it just moved off down the hill.
11:31J.C. Rourke and I were up on that little hill there
11:34and we were setting chokers
11:36and the cat came down to the land and he didn't come back.
11:39So we decided to walk out in the woods
11:43on the timber so we could be in the shade.
11:46And we heard this commotion there in the brush
11:48and we saw this big monster going out through there.
11:52And I yelled for my buddy, I wanted him to see him.
11:54And I started running.
11:56I wanted to get a closer look at him
11:57and we chased him over the ridge there.
12:00And at one time I was within 50 feet of him.
12:03Whatever Osborne chased through the woods
12:05left him far behind.
12:08Cochran, an amateur artist,
12:09tried to sketch what he saw.
12:12He was tall, long-legged,
12:15and hairy,
12:16very broad shoulders,
12:18and his head seemed to just
12:20spring up out of his shoulders, no neck.
12:22The arms were long
12:24and more in proportion than a human.
12:28There is persuasive evidence
12:29that men may be closing in on Bigfoot.
12:32What will the hunters do if they find him?
12:37We'll just smooth it out a little bit,
12:39make sure it runs into all the cracks and corners.
12:42And that's really all there is to it.
12:43Peter Byrne, professional Bigfoot investigator.
12:47Hundreds of unexplained footprints
12:49have been found in these woods.
12:51They receive close examination by the experts.
12:54This is a plaster cast of an actual footprint here.
12:58And it's a 13 1⁄2 inch cast.
13:03And it has a number of peculiarities.
13:05One is the normal bulge
13:08behind the big toe, the hallux,
13:10and then there's a second bulge.
13:12And this is peculiar to all of the footprints
13:14that we have seen.
13:15Nobody really knows what causes this second bulge.
13:19Perhaps it's a muscle of some kind
13:21to support the enormous weight.
13:22This is a cast of an individual
13:25that's very obviously crippled.
13:27And I studied this some length
13:29and found these two bulges
13:31on the outside of the foot.
13:32Anatomically, they have to correspond
13:34to a couple of gaps
13:36in the bones and the foot themselves.
13:38And the bulges in a normal human foot
13:41expanded to this size
13:43would have been here,
13:43but they're shifted forward.
13:46Well, anatomically,
13:46this means that the ankle weight
13:48is shifted somewhat forward.
13:50It's not just a gigantic human foot.
13:52The leverage has been redesigned.
13:54And this happens to be redesigned
13:56just exactly the way it would have to be
13:58for an 800-pound animal.
14:01So the idea that this was faked by somebody
14:04isn't quite so simple.
14:06If it was faked,
14:06it was done by a human anatomist
14:09who was a real genius.
14:10And he had to have laid out
14:12thousands of these fakes
14:13all over the place.
14:14And that just simply becomes impossible.
14:17Among the fakery that we have seen
14:19is a piece of film
14:20made in 1970 by a man
14:22in northern Washington.
14:25At first, it looked very good.
14:26It was a man in a fur suit, of course.
14:29The particular man tried to sell it to us
14:31for $25,000.
14:33And he told us that the creature
14:35in this movie
14:36was 8 foot 6 inches in height.
14:38But when we found the area,
14:39we were able to do our own measurements.
14:41And we saw that the creature
14:43in the fur suit,
14:43or the man in the fur suit,
14:45was a little under 6 feet in height.
14:47This, I think, is a good example
14:48of the kind of fakery
14:49that we have encountered
14:50through the years.
14:52Throughout the Northwest,
14:54there are hundreds of men
14:55hunting for Bigfoot.
14:58Don Peterson, Jack Sullivan,
15:00and James Huskin
15:02have searched for several years.
15:05They believe the hunt
15:06will end with a bullet.
15:08Oh, I think eventually
15:08somebody's going to bring one in.
15:11That's the only way.
15:16Pictures aren't going to be enough
15:17because there's been film taken
15:19of one of these creatures anyway.
15:24And it's in dispute.
15:26Like Jim said,
15:27if we take a bunch of pictures,
15:29they're going to be under dispute.
15:31And if you can shoot one animal,
15:33you might be able to save
15:34the rest of them
15:34from everybody else
15:35from shooting them too.
15:36And that sets up a conflict
15:38among Bigfoot hunters.
15:40Does it have to be killed
15:41to prove it exists?
15:46Through the centuries,
15:48the mighty Columbia River
15:49separating Washington and Oregon
15:51has cut a deep gorge
15:52on its way
15:53to the Pacific Ocean.
15:54It is a big, rugged,
15:57beautiful land
15:57where man holds
15:58a deep respect for nature.
16:01In Stevenson, Washington,
16:03they passed an ordinance
16:04setting a $10,000 fine
16:06or five years in jail
16:07for killing a Bigfoot.
16:10The people living in this country
16:11have a special relationship
16:13to the woods.
16:14They depend on the land
16:15for their survival.
16:17They may not totally believe
16:18in Bigfoot,
16:19but they believe
16:20in the possibility.
16:22And they don't want it killed.
16:23At least not in their county.
16:26District Attorney Robert Leake.
16:28We didn't feel
16:29that if there was
16:30such an animal
16:30that the animal
16:32had ever harmed anybody
16:33or that it had done anything
16:35that deserved to be shot
16:37or captured.
16:38We need a piece of the body.
16:40Nothing else will be accepted.
16:42I think that there are
16:43many other ways
16:43of proving an existence
16:44of something other than
16:46killing that particular thing
16:47that you're trying
16:47to prove exists.
16:49My preference would be
16:50to locate a hunter
16:51who has shot and killed one
16:53and perhaps because
16:54he thought he killed
16:54a valuable animal
16:55or a peculiar human
16:56he might not have said
16:57anything about it.
16:58But if he would
16:59come forward
17:00perhaps we could examine
17:02the place where he killed it
17:03and we might find
17:03a few bones
17:04and then the whole thing
17:05is settled right there.
17:06If we don't find
17:07such an old kill
17:09then the only alternative
17:10remaining
17:11is to kill one now.
17:13And grisly as that sounds
17:15I think that is probably
17:16what we'll have to do.
17:17I would strongly urge
17:22the doctor to reconsider
17:23that especially
17:24if he thinks
17:25he's going to do it
17:27in this county
17:27because we would
17:28enforce the ordinance.
17:29Why add more controversy
17:31to something
17:32that's already controversial?
17:33What we have to have
17:35is a specimen
17:36for scientific identification.
17:38I think it would be
17:39morally wrong.
17:41I see no reason.
17:42In fact I talked
17:43to a small boy
17:44a school boy recently
17:45and he said
17:46some people say
17:47shoot one
17:47to prove that they're there
17:48and then he said
17:50supposing the one
17:50that the one they shoot
17:51is the last one.
17:53Well my answer to that
17:54is if they become extinct
17:56so what?
17:58If they're not proven
17:59it doesn't make any difference.
18:00We have a lot of animals
18:01that became extinct
18:02in the past
18:03and there's nothing
18:03we can do about it
18:04and if this animal
18:05remains unaccepted
18:07who cares if it
18:08becomes extinct?
18:10They're obviously rare
18:11and not very many of them
18:12and as we see them
18:14they could be
18:15a hominid form
18:15it could be a man
18:16to shoot one
18:17would be totally wrong
18:18and we are totally opposed
18:21to this philosophy.
18:24While men ponder the dilemma
18:26to kill or not to kill
18:28many Indians wonder
18:29why this preoccupation
18:31with proving Bigfoot exists.
18:33To the Indian
18:34there is no doubt.
18:36Many like Mrs. Joe Washington
18:38see the hunt for Bigfoot
18:40just another intrusion
18:41into their sacred past.
18:45you'll never be able to
18:46you might say
18:47civilize them
18:48like the white man
18:50done to us.
18:53He's somebody that belongs
18:55in the area
18:57that he chooses
18:58to live in
18:58and if someone
19:01did bring him down
19:03he'd never adapt
19:12to your way
19:13or even mine
19:14because his way
19:16of life
19:17is entirely
19:18different
19:19from
19:19ours
19:22mine
19:23and yours.
19:24and I always felt
19:28so bad
19:30when I hear
19:31of Sasquatch hunters
19:32that say
19:34they're going to
19:35photograph this man
19:36or most of them
19:38refer to him
19:39as an animal
19:40and from the stories
19:42and things
19:43that I was taught
19:44by my people
19:45that he is not
19:48an animal
19:48he's not a savage
19:50is a gentle being
19:53that
19:53just goes about
19:55his own way
19:56collecting
19:58his own food
19:59clothing
20:01and lives
20:03where he chooses.
20:04man with his
20:19ingenuity
20:20and machinery
20:20continues to
20:22stalk this creature
20:23a creature
20:24described by the
20:25Indians
20:25as a gentle being
20:27wanting to live
20:28in peace
20:28in his own habitat
20:29a creature
20:31some scientists
20:32believe
20:32is a link
20:33to centuries
20:34long past.
20:36the gorilla
20:36is mentioned
20:37in Greek mythology
20:39going back
20:39hundreds and hundreds
20:40of years
20:41and yet it was not
20:41discovered
20:42until the late
20:4218th century
20:43and the subspecies
20:45the mountain gorilla
20:46was not identified
20:47until early 1900
20:48and there are
20:50other examples
20:51the fossil fish
20:52that was discovered
20:53in the Indian Ocean
20:54only a few years ago
20:55believed to be extinct
20:57for 80 million years
20:58this is the coelacanth
21:00and now it's known
21:01to still live
21:02off the coast of Africa
21:03is that the case
21:05with Bigfoot
21:05is this creature
21:07really a relative
21:08of the gigantopithecus
21:09a primate
21:11that lived
21:11over one million
21:12years ago
21:13in China
21:13the land
21:15lends itself
21:15to hide
21:16such a creature
21:17there is food
21:18for it to survive
21:19it does not
21:20need man
21:21but it may have
21:23to die
21:23at the hands
21:24of man
21:24to prove to him
21:25that there is
21:26such a thing
21:27called
21:27Bigfoot
21:28if we assume
21:30that Bigfoot
21:31is real
21:31and that men
21:32are closing in
21:33on this seemingly
21:34gentle monster
21:35then we must prepare
21:37for that first meeting
21:38to have eluded us
21:40for so long
21:40Bigfoot must understand
21:42men very well
21:43the burden
21:44will be on us
21:45to understand him
21:46Bigfoot may well
21:48be waiting
21:49for some sign
21:50that we're ready
21:51Bigfoot
22:21Bigfoot
