00:00Hello there, welcome to your Thursday morning weather update from the Met Office.
00:04It's going to be wet today across the north, whereas the winds pick up some strength and then all change as the storm Amy comes in.
00:10This is a potent beast which will track across the country through Friday into Saturday, bringing with it damaging winds and heavy rain.
00:17But we do have some issues through today with rainfall. The rainfall levels are totting up across western parts of Scotland.
00:23The risk of flooded roads, even some landslides as gusts reach probably 45 to 55 miles an hour through the afternoon into evening time.
00:30As those winds strengthen from the south-southwest.
00:33So all in all, yes, some wet weather to come. Further south and east, it's a fairly quieter start to the day,
00:38but you will see that wet and windy weather associated with storm Amy as we head through into the latter part of the week.
00:44For the time being, if you're stepping out across Scotland, you'll run into some rain, some drier skies towards the northeast,
00:49but all of this is moving northeastwards. Some patchy rain, low cloud and drizzle across northern Ireland, northwest England as well,
00:55the far northwest of Wales. But inland, a mix of clouds, some brighter breaks, one or two mist and fog patches which will lift.
01:02And this area will stay dry as we head through today, so east Wales towards the Midlands, eastern counties of England.
01:08And here it's not going to feel too bad with some brighter breaks, if not some sunshine coming through.
01:13This patchy rain through the morning will be persistent across the western side of Scotland.
01:17That's where we're expecting some impacts from the rain, particularly through the afternoon as another batch of rain arrives.
01:23Now, this will be more intense, heavier and more persistent, pushing from northern Ireland towards western Scotland through into the afternoon.
01:30Filaments of rain just extending also across Irish Sea Coast, so you could see some wet weather in West Wales,
01:36even the far tip of Cornwall, northwest England.
01:38But in any sunshine, temperatures coming in 20 to 21 degrees Celsius.
01:43A wind, though, which will keep things quite blustery further north and northwest.
01:48And that wind will extend and clear through Friday as the rain clears more eastern areas.
01:53And then this is Storm Amy moving in on Friday afternoon into evening time.
01:58Initially, it's going to be heavy rain, again causing problems with flooding, especially across western Scotland.
02:04But that rain warning extends across most of Scotland, away from the eastern periphery.
02:08And then the winds really will ramp up.
02:11So this is a deepening area of low pressure, which is tracking towards the northwest of Scotland.
02:15See the squeeze on the ice bars associated with very strong winds.
02:19That's gales, if not severe gales.
02:21The wind warning extends down towards the far north of England, northwest England, as well as the northern part of Wales.
02:28Northern Ireland also seeing strong winds, particularly through the afternoon and into evening time.
02:32Gusts could reach particularly exposure up to around 80 miles an hour, if not slightly higher than that.
02:38And certainly that will be the case across the far north and northwest of Scotland, where you'll be really exposed to the deepening of that low pressure.
02:45This cold front here will bring with it some heavy rain, some sharp bursts of rain as it eventually pushes south and eastwards.
02:52And notice the winds will be strong even across England and Wales, away from that warning zone.
02:58It will be very blustery indeed.
03:00And then a return to the rain later.
03:02You can see this wraparound coming in on Friday evening and overnight bringing more wet weather towards the northwest.
03:08And those winds will be relentless with high waves.
03:10So multiple impacts associated with Storm Amy, particularly for Scotland and Northern Ireland, the far northwest of England, as well as northern parts of Wales.
03:19Windy into Saturday across many areas as well.
03:22But then the wind changes direction and we will see a rash of showers.
03:27Let's add that rain on top of that synoptic flow.
03:30Then you can see the rain moving in through Friday afternoon, heavy rain at that, sweeping northwards, that deepening area, low pressure, extending, bringing with it heavy rain and showers into Saturday.
03:42Sharp, sharp bursts of rain associated with the cold front moving southwards into Saturday.
03:47So most places seeing that wet weather and certainly a very blustery day with gales, if not severe gales across the north as well as the northwest through Saturday afternoon and into evening time.
03:56Please stay up to date with the warnings and we'll keep you posted here on all our social media channels.
