00:00The Ministry of Health is tonight issuing an urgent advisory to parents and caregivers.
00:05An international alert has been raised over a baby formula linked to several cases of infant botulism.
00:13While the product is not officially sold in Trinidad and Tobago,
00:16authorities say families may have purchased it online and they're urging vigilance.
00:21According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the FDA,
00:26several infants who consumed the by heart whole nutrition infant formula fell ill.
00:33Botulism is a rare but serious illness and in babies the symptoms can be subtle at first.
00:39Symptoms of infant botulism include poor feeding, loss of head control, difficulty swallowing, decreased facial expression.
00:48Health officials note that symptoms may take several weeks to appear,
00:52so caregivers should continue monitoring infants even if they seem fine now.
00:58The Chemistry, Food and Drugs Division continues to monitor the situation
01:02and says it will provide updates as more information becomes available.
