00:0015 forever. That's how the victim's mother described her son as she spoke of the day
00:08that she says changed her world forever. She told the court the shock set in at the hospital.
00:15They spoke a lot of medical terms I could not understand. They said the machines were
00:21breathing for him, and he was dead. The 15-year-old had been in a car allegedly
00:26driven by another 15-year-old in a high-speed ride around Canberra. When the car crashed,
00:33the boy suffered catastrophic injuries and was left on the road as three others crawled
00:39out alive. Jayden Chaveau circled back in a stolen car, quickly retrieving the three and
00:46fleeing the scene. He dropped the group off and torched the car in a paddock, leading to
00:52a charge of arson. His lawyer played down his role, saying he didn't even see the crash.
00:59He's not criminally liable for the offence. He's criminally liable for leaving with the
01:04alleged principal offender. But the prosecution said Chaveau made a choice
01:09to leave, in keeping with a history of a person who has a very cavalier approach to driving
01:16cars that are not his. Even the judge described Chaveau's criminal record as appalling and
01:23sad. One of the passengers has already been sentenced, but the alleged 15-year-old driver
01:30is yet to stand trial. Chaveau will be sentenced later in the year.
