00:00I know you love it, but I'm going to send the brakes out.
00:03We've got other things to do.
00:04Okay, we'll make it easier up on a proper lift.
00:07Yeah, exactly.
00:08It's your circuit system, isn't it?
00:09Yeah, that's true.
00:11Henry, you've left your toolkit lying out.
00:15Where's that mine?
00:16Can I just say, my toolkit, as you know, comprises of two things.
00:21A credit card and a mobile phone.
00:24We're back!
00:26Oh, I'm loving this.
00:27Scouring Britain's sheds for classic cars.
00:30A thing of beauty.
00:31Proper special.
00:32Quintessential Brits.
00:34That's nice.
00:35A Lee Francis.
00:36American icons.
00:37Look at the amount of chrome on the front there.
00:40And Continental Curios.
00:42That is a Lancia Aprilia.
00:45We're going to buy them.
00:46Thank you so much.
00:47Fantastic, Ludo.
00:48Sort them.
00:49It's the sunroof.
00:51No, please, I'm getting out now.
00:52Drive them.
00:54And sell them for a tidy profit.
00:56Oh, we're in the money.
00:59This is Sheddenberry's Classic Cars.
01:06We're on our way to rugby.
01:08And Fuzz is in the grump.
01:09You got me down here in the morning, and then you told me where we're going.
01:17We're going to just outside rugby to go and see Mark.
01:21Oh.
01:21Who lives ten minutes away from my house.
01:26I could have had a lie-in.
01:27Yeah.
01:28I'm really sorry about that.
01:30You didn't want to drive, did you?
01:31No.
01:32Thanks so much.
01:33Because he's local to you.
01:35Yeah.
01:35I know you don't know him, but what's he got?
01:37I don't know him.
01:39But he's something of a whizzo engineer.
01:43Oh, is he?
01:43Yeah, he is.
01:44I think he has a nice line in sort of hand-built race cars and the like and stuff like that.
01:50Race cars?
01:51Bit of an engineer.
01:51That's expensive stuff, mate.
01:53Yeah, it is.
01:53Hopefully he's got some other stuff.
01:54I can't see you buying a period race car.
01:58Financially, I don't think we can.
02:00Can we?
02:00No.
02:01We haven't made enough money for a while.
02:03No.
02:04Anyway, just outside of rugby, that's good enough for me.
02:08I mean, maybe on the way back, you can drop me off.
02:11Oh, wait a minute.
02:12No.
02:12My car's in yours.
02:14That's such a shame, isn't it?
02:15You're going to have to drive me home.
02:20Whether we come back with a race car and an empty wallet to cheer Fuzz up,
02:24who knows?
02:25But rugby, here we come.
02:31Mark?
02:32Yes?
02:33I can see a grey Fergie.
02:35I can see an Albion.
02:37But then again, I can see sports cars and things.
02:39And bikes.
02:41And bikes.
02:42Yeah, go on then.
02:42Well, it's addictive.
02:43I know.
02:44Once you start, you can't seem to stop.
02:46Is that really?
02:47Yeah.
02:47And you set out to make room for something, so you sell a few,
02:51but you generally don't sell and you just keep collecting.
02:53Yeah, you just build a bigger shed.
02:55Yeah, you have to buy somewhere with a bigger barn.
02:57So what is for sale, though?
02:59Is everything else for sale?
03:00Well, there's one or two for sale.
03:02Okay, well, look, I'll tell you what we'll do.
03:03We'll have a rummage about.
03:04I might call you in and ask you on some things.
03:07Yeah.
03:07Yeah, that we're not sure about.
03:08Yeah.
03:09And then at the end, hopefully, we'll have a haggle.
03:11Yeah.
03:11That's it.
03:12Yeah, we're looking forward to that bit.
03:13Fantastic.
03:13Cheers, Mark.
03:14All right.
03:15Lovely jubbly.
03:15Brilliant.
03:15Okay, well, I think we'll start.
03:17I want to start down there.
03:18Okay.
03:19I've just got this feeling that downhill's always good.
03:21Yeah.
03:21Yeah, it's like my career.
03:23You're certainly going that way.
03:24Yeah, yeah.
03:25Watch it.
03:26See you in a minute, Mark.
03:26Yeah.
03:27All right.
03:27Look at them.
03:31Look at that in there.
03:32Look at what?
03:34It's a DB24.
03:35Oh, I don't like them.
03:36Now, look at this.
03:38They're the ugliest Aston Martin I've ever seen in my life.
03:41Are you out of your mind?
03:43I don't like DB24s.
03:47The Aston Martin DB24 was the four-seater version of the classic DB2,
03:53though not as fast as its predecessor and often overlooked.
03:57Today, DB24s sell for £200,000 upwards.
04:04Why have they suddenly gone through the roof?
04:06This has been a late blossom.
04:07Everybody's looking at the DB4s, 5s and 6s.
04:10Hang on, we're talking ugly duckling turning into a beautiful swan.
04:13Yeah, and suddenly everybody realises that these have turned into swans.
04:18Apart from me.
04:19Honestly, these are beautiful.
04:21But they're out of our price range.
04:24For something more affordable, he's got a couple of tractors.
04:27And several trials bikes.
04:30Generally speaking, I think he's into motorsport.
04:33Yeah.
04:33And tractors.
04:34If you're into motorsport, occasionally you might need to pull something out of a hedge.
04:38Yeah.
04:39Especially if I'm driving.
04:41Okay, mate.
04:42Well, look, the DKW's rather nice.
04:43Yeah, I like that.
04:44But obviously we're here for a car.
04:49Outside, there are more tractors than some classic trucks.
04:55He's got a Ford D-Series.
04:58That tyre's like my lungs.
05:00Well, yeah.
05:01At least that can be inflated.
05:02It's going to be pumped up.
05:04Yeah.
05:04A 1975 Bedford TK.
05:08TK was one of the well-beating truck designs of the early 1960s.
05:14Yeah.
05:14And I think in certain far-flung parts of the world, they're still much revered.
05:19And tucked into a container.
05:21Ooh.
05:23Now, look at that.
05:25That is a Mark I, isn't it?
05:27It is.
05:281967, 68.
05:2968.
05:30Oh, I quite like these.
05:34Nicknamed Britain's most wanted van by the Metropolitan Police,
05:38the Ford Transit Mark I was hugely popular with both tradesmen and bank robbers.
05:44Several engines and body types were available, enabling it to carry significant loads.
05:50Oh, look, it's got a pickup back to it.
05:53It has as well.
05:54That's very nice, actually.
05:55Hang on, it's left-hand drive again.
05:57It is, yeah.
05:58Yeah, but that's okay.
05:59You don't mind a left-hand drive vehicle, do you?
06:01Where's Mark?
06:03Mark?
06:04Where's it come from?
06:05So, a friend of mine, he found it in a German woodyard.
06:07Back was loaded up with planks when he picked it up.
06:10Yeah.
06:10He brought it back here and we purchased it.
06:12Wow, so you've got it running and everything.
06:14Yeah, it's all up and running.
06:15So, is it for sale?
06:17Yeah, it could be for sale.
06:18Okay.
06:18And it's carried plenty of planks around before, so it could do a few more, couldn't it?
06:22Yeah, I am a plank.
06:23Yeah.
06:24I was including myself.
06:26Well, I'm more flat pack, apart from a bit of a bulge there.
06:29Yeah, UK registered now, ready to go.
06:31Oh, that sounds good.
06:32Hey, look.
06:33Well, look, we've got another shed to go.
06:34Come on.
06:35Come on.
06:38Mark's main shed is a veritable carnucopia with MGs, Triumphs, and my favourite, a Rolls-Royce
06:46Silver Spirit.
06:47Now, this is a lovely colour combination, isn't it?
06:50So, we've got...
06:51It is.
06:51Trust you to go.
06:52This is a lovely colour combination, when actually there is a Rolls-Royce in front of you.
07:00The Silver Spirit was the last of the hand-built Rolls-Royces, with a powerful V8 engine and luxurious
07:07trim and fitments.
07:08As I get older, I quite like the idea of having a roller like this.
07:17I kind of sort of feel that it's a bank robber done well.
07:21Well, I suppose, yeah.
07:23But you wouldn't use one of these to actually rob a bank, would you?
07:26No, no.
07:26No, you use a Transit Mark 1.
07:27Yes, that's right.
07:28That's what you'd use.
07:29You want to be able to carry stuff out.
07:31Whereas this is what you buy with your spoils, once they've been laundered a little.
07:36This is the legacy, isn't it?
07:38Yeah.
07:39Of doing rather well.
07:41There's still no sign of all those race cars, but en route to his last shed, we spot something.
07:48Hey, now.
07:49What is this?
07:51Have you seen the number plate?
07:52Woof.
07:53I have, yeah.
07:53W-O-F.
07:54Yeah, it's a Birmingham-issued registration number.
07:58Woof, woof in Birmingham?
07:59Yeah.
08:00OK, well, look.
08:00I'm sorry.
08:01We should be looking at cars.
08:02But just stopping off here, that's Villiers 250 pad.
08:05Maybe it's a Panther or something.
08:07That looks like a nice, probably late 50s, very early 60s bike.
08:12I like it.
08:13Go on, then.
08:13Let's go over there.
08:15Here.
08:15Great.
08:19Oh, wow.
08:21There's very special cars in here.
08:25Mark's final shed fully lives up to the hype with a collection of classic race cars,
08:30including two Coopers and this fabulous MG.
08:35Mark, here, come on in.
08:37Tell me about this.
08:38This is amazing.
08:40Yeah, 1934 MG Q-type.
08:42One of only eight.
08:42First one built.
08:44It would have been a two-seater originally.
08:46They all were two-seaters.
08:48Winter of 1934 to 1935, it was converted to single-seater by Thomson and Taylors.
08:53Right.
08:53To race the outer circuits at Brooklands.
08:56So what sort of speeds would that have been achieving at the time?
08:59Well, you have a look at the rev counter in there, which was the original rev counter
09:02from when it raced at Brooklands.
09:04It was geared for 24.75 miles per hour per thousand.
09:08And it was revving at about 6,500, 140 miles an hour.
09:12140 miles an hour in that?
09:15Getting on for that.
09:16That would have been utterly terrifying.
09:18I won't bother checking the price of any of these race cars or the beautiful four-seater
09:25MG midget next door, which looks like it's seen a few weddings.
09:30But we have to get something.
09:33Clearly, there's a lot of stuff that's going to be out of our range.
09:37Yeah.
09:37Well, we can find out.
09:38Yeah.
09:39There was that Transit that I liked.
09:41Yeah, yeah.
09:41We'll see what that's worth.
09:43We could try the D-Series.
09:45Yeah, the D-Series.
09:46I wish that looks pretty good as well.
09:47All our Bedford.
09:48This is lovely.
09:49I mean, we can only ask, can't we?
09:51Way out of line.
09:52Yeah.
09:52Shall we go and see Mark?
09:53Yeah.
09:53Come on then.
09:54Okay.
10:00Where are we going to start?
10:01There's a couple of Bedford trucks.
10:03I know the blue one's a TK.
10:04Yeah, TK's mine.
10:06Laura, I use it quite a bit.
10:07It would be in a tipper.
10:08It's quite useful.
10:09It could be bought, but it'd probably carry a bit of a premium.
10:12Would it?
10:13Yeah.
10:13All right.
10:14I don't like premiums.
10:15No.
10:15No.
10:16I'm not going to talk about the 2.4.
10:18No?
10:19You can.
10:19Well, I do like the 2.4, but I doubt that's for sale, and I doubt it's within our budget
10:24anyway.
10:24No, well, my father bought that 40-odd years ago, and we've just recommissioned it.
10:30It's been off the road for 39 years.
10:32Yeah?
10:32The first year it's been back on the road.
10:34Wow.
10:34So, yeah, no, that one's got to stay, that one.
10:37There is a bike in there, Panther, is it?
10:39How much of that?
10:40But, well, somewhere around about 2,000.
10:44Okay.
10:44Might be a bit of wiggle room in that.
10:46Okay, mate.
10:46All right.
10:47All right.
10:48Okay.
10:48Now, we opened up a container.
10:51Oh, yeah.
10:51And in there, there was a little transit flatbed.
10:54Yes.
10:55So, is that for sale?
10:56Yeah, I think we'd need to be somewhere around 6,000, Mark, for that.
11:01Okay.
11:02What was it again?
11:03Yeah, 6,000, that.
11:05Yeah, but we might be a bit of wiggle room in it.
11:07All right.
11:08Unless we have a deal with a bike as well, and we can put that on the back.
11:11Five grand?
11:12Yeah.
11:12No, it might need to be a tad more than that.
11:15What about 5,2?
11:18Yeah.
11:19How about 5,7?
11:21We're up in rugby with Mark and his eclectic collection of race cars and lorries.
11:40We've bid 5,500 for a Mark I transit.
11:44But will he go for it?
11:46You're about to squeeze another £50 each between you, can't you?
11:495,6?
11:50I don't know, mate.
11:50It's time.
11:51Well, I've made him spend a bit of money recently.
11:54Yeah, he has.
11:54And he's looking at me now.
11:56I'll tell you what.
11:57What about if I give you the 100?
11:59All right.
12:00Yeah.
12:01We're having a deal at 5,6?
12:025,6?
12:02Come on, then.
12:03Okay.
12:04Well done, Mark.
12:05We're going to talk about a band first.
12:06Shall we load that on the back as well?
12:07No, no, no.
12:08The thing is that I believe that that Panther, I would think it's nearer the 1,200 quid.
12:14Do you know what I mean?
12:15Yeah, I think we could about strap it on the back for 1,200 pounds.
12:19Has it got a V5, the Panther?
12:20Yeah, it has.
12:20Yeah, an original buff, but, yeah.
12:23Okay.
12:23All right.
12:24Look at that.
12:24Okay.
12:25All right, great.
12:26A double purchase.
12:27Didn't expect that.
12:28That's a double whammy.
12:29I never, ever expected that.
12:30Hey, Mark, thank you so very much.
12:32What a lovely day.
12:35On the following afternoon, we reveal all.
12:38Have you seen the transit?
12:40Mark 2 or Mark 1?
12:42It's a Mark 1.
12:42It's amazing.
12:43It's a 1967, 68.
12:44The colour's just nice as well.
12:45Yeah.
12:46The tyres look good, is it?
12:47Is it all running up and nice and going?
12:48Well, supposedly, yeah.
12:50I love the back, the back's really cool.
12:52Yeah, it is, isn't it?
12:53Yeah, it's got that.
12:53Oh, that's what it's for.
12:55That bit of scap across the back is so you can lean things up.
12:58Then your planks, yeah.
12:59Ladders.
12:59Scapple poles.
13:00Is it the case, then, with these pick-ups, that the pick-up is actually more valuable than the actual van itself, if you see what I mean?
13:08Well, I think, in any case, an early transit is a valuable piece of kit anyway.
13:14And because this one's got an original back on it, in very nice condition, I think it's a remarkable survivor.
13:21Do you know what I think about this?
13:22What?
13:23I think that it looks like a scrap man's vehicle.
13:27It does, actually, doesn't it?
13:28Yeah, yeah.
13:29Colin's.
13:29You know, sort of, all iron.
13:32Try that, Henry.
13:33Any old iron?
13:34That's it.
13:35Iron?
13:36Any old iron?
13:39You've got to get it with a bit more of an iron.
13:42Okay.
13:43Iron!
13:44That's it.
13:44That's the one.
13:45Iron!
13:45Perfect.
13:46Perfect.
13:47Can you blow a bugle?
13:49That's what we're going to do, then.
13:50We're going to go and collect iron.
13:53We're going to go and collect scrap.
13:54Okay, so, look, what I think we should do, obviously, get it going, clean it up.
13:57But I also think we should put some decals, get Pete the signwriter in.
14:02Cole and the Sun scrap dealer.
14:04As for the panther with the Villiers lump, it doesn't look as though it's run for a while,
14:09but I'm sure it'll be no trouble for the engine whisperer.
14:12It's late in the day.
14:14Tomorrow, you get working on that, right?
14:17And Fuzz and I'll have a look over on the transit, okay?
14:19Yeah.
14:20Next day, we're up with the lark.
14:27Oi!
14:28I just threw it in my head, then.
14:30Sorry, did you?
14:31Yeah.
14:31Lucky you've got some cushioning on there.
14:34But while Alan's having a fiddle in there, yeah, with the motorcycle, you'll be taking
14:39for a test ride.
14:40Well, I'm just pre-empting that because I'm just checking the fluids.
14:44Come on, is that ready to go?
14:45Yeah, sure.
14:45Come on then.
14:46All right, come on.
14:46So our Ford Transit rides again.
14:56What's up, have you shrunk?
14:59No.
14:59Why are you so low?
15:00Look, my seat has collapsed.
15:02Is it?
15:03Yeah, it's lost its stuffing.
15:06And in fact, over one side, so over this side, there's a bit more stuffing, there's a bit
15:11more support.
15:12But on this side, where I think, you know, the previous operative of this machine has got
15:18in and out.
15:19All the time.
15:20It's broken the seat.
15:24After its incarceration in that container, the good news is our transit runs, but it's
15:30not quite perfect.
15:31What are the problems here?
15:34Your seat is a problem.
15:35Tickover's a bit high.
15:37Yeah, it is.
15:39Maybe we've got a little bit of steering wonder, have we?
15:42Yeah, just a little bit, so maybe we can have a little look at that.
15:45Yeah, maybe, but also I noticed that the tyres are a bit cracked.
15:48So the steering kind of stodginess, really.
15:52Sort out of the bonnet as well.
15:55So that's our shopping list for the transit.
15:58But how much does Alan have to do on the Panther?
16:02But we've got a problem.
16:02The kickstart spring's broken.
16:04And then Henry and Fuzz didn't get the key for the bike.
16:07So he hasn't got the key for the bike.
16:08We can't see if the ignition works.
16:10So what I'm going to do is take this cover off and see if I can bypass the ignition switch
16:13to get it to run.
16:14It doesn't appear to have a battery fitted, which is really strange.
16:16But I've had a good look around.
16:17There's no battery at all.
16:18So it seems to be direct lighting and direct ignition.
16:20So let's get this cover off and see what we can see.
16:23According to Mark, this bike was last run in 1982.
16:27It looks as if someone has been tinkering with it.
16:30So the first thing I want to do is remove this little cover to expose the ignition points.
16:36I notice it's only got one screw, and that screw is loose as well, which means someone's
16:39obviously been in there before, quite recently.
16:41So the gear lever, oh, which is actually loose, that comes off.
16:46Kickstart is actually bolted on, but the nuts are loose.
16:50I think someone's been in here trying to get this working and given up.
16:57Anyway, that's the transit running.
17:00They're going to have to arrive without me, leaving me here working on this bike.
17:03In fact, we've just returned home, and Fuzz is starting on the transit.
17:07Well, we've got a number of little problems with this transit.
17:13So one thing, we've got this dent right here.
17:18So it'd be nice to get that out.
17:20But the trouble is with that is we've got a double skin underneath here.
17:26There's this reinforcement piece that stops this all flapping around at the front.
17:31And so that means that it's difficult to get out.
17:34So I'm going to have to drill some holes and then try and use some drifts just to tap this little dent out.
17:44Fuzz begins by drilling some pilot holes before using a larger drill bit to puncture the inner skin.
17:53Once he's in, he improvises, using the wrong end of a drift,
17:57a kind of punch tool, to carefully bang out the dent from the inside.
18:04It takes one more hole and a lot more banging.
18:09I'm not really hitting it that hard. I'm just trying to tease it out.
18:19But after half an hour, Fuzz is happy.
18:24What I'm not going to do is chase this too much.
18:27We've got the dent out a little bit now.
18:29It's kind of less of a crease.
18:31So that's a bit better.
18:32Maybe just rub this down a little bit and perhaps leave it for the next owner.
18:37We'll have to see.
18:38Maybe we'll get a bit of time to fill it.
18:40But if not, it looks a tiny bit better.
18:44I suppose the one thing I ought to check now is,
18:46now that we've made it slightly less concave,
18:51does the bonnet actually still shut?
18:58It does actually.
18:59Shuts a little bit better.
19:01Alan, meanwhile, has taken the cover off the Panthers' engine.
19:09He was just about to hotwire it, when he had a bit of luck.
19:13I was about to cut the wires.
19:15I was looking around the workshop and I found some keys.
19:17I thought, I wonder if they're going to fit.
19:18I put it in the lock and it didn't quite fit.
19:20It went in, but it wouldn't quite turn.
19:24Alan takes the lock back to the lathe
19:26to grind it into a perfect fit
19:28and then reassembles it on the engine.
19:32What a stroke like it was by these keys.
19:34They fit almost perfect,
19:35but now they fit absolutely perfect
19:37and the lock works great.
19:38So we've got ignition off.
19:40Ignition on. It works.
19:42How cool is that?
19:43So the ignition switch is sorted.
19:46But will it run?
19:48Alan refits the engine panel
19:49and mends the spring fitting on the kickstart.
19:54And the kickstart returns.
19:55How cool is that?
19:57When he gives it a kick, though,
19:59his winning streak runs out.
20:03No spark at all.
20:05Totally dead.
20:07Meanwhile, outside...
20:09Are you ready?
20:13The transit's engine is also not quite playing ball
20:16and won't idle properly.
20:19It's just a bit cold at the moment,
20:20but once the choke comes off
20:23if I adjust the screw,
20:25it just operates on the throttle bus supply.
20:30This engine, the S6 V4,
20:32was used in everything from the transit to the Capri
20:35and even in early models of the Ford Granada.
20:44Fuzz adjusts the tickover screw and the mixture screw
20:47and it all sounds much sweeter.
20:49That's quite nice now.
20:56OK.
20:58I think we'll leave it at that
20:59because once we put the air filter back on,
21:02that'll just slightly enrichen the mixture
21:05and I think it'll be absolutely spot on.
21:08And talk about spot on.
21:12Alan's now cleaned the points
21:14and swapped the spark plugs
21:15and after a quick glug of fuel,
21:18he's ready to go.
21:21Right, choke's on.
21:23Let's give it a kick and see what happens.
21:25This is quite exciting, really.
21:26It's either going to work or it's not going to work,
21:27but hopefully it will work.
21:29Let's see.
21:29It's definitely fired.
21:44She runs perfect
21:48and the ignition switch works.
21:50How cool is that?
21:51Let's go for a second start.
21:59And it's on two cylinders as well.
22:06It's running just perfect.
22:08I am so chuffed.
22:09That's been quite a lot of work,
22:10but it's been well worth it in the end.
22:11So the Panthers almost fit to prowl,
22:14but there's still work to do on the transit.
22:17Our aim is to take it scrapping this weekend,
22:20but can we get it ready in time?
22:24That is going to have to be changed.
22:26It's an easy job,
22:27but can we get a ball joint for it?
22:41We had a good day yesterday,
22:44fettling the transit
22:45and our Panther bike.
22:50Hey!
22:51That's it!
22:57She runs perfect.
23:00There are still some gremlins to sort out on the transit,
23:04starting with a faulty door handle.
23:09Let's have a look inside here,
23:10because what we have is a non-functioning driver's side door button.
23:17I think basically the internals of the door button
23:21have pushed through and beyond the little lever that they work on.
23:26So I'm going to take the door handle off
23:30and see if I can...
23:31Well, actually, maybe I'll just see if I can get a screwdriver up there
23:34and just flick it back,
23:36because it might just need that.
23:38Let's see what we can do.
23:41It sounds too good to be true,
23:43but after a quick jiggle with the screwdriver...
23:46Hold on, if I pull that back...
23:48Ah, there we go.
23:50That's gone in.
23:52Now, just keep it there.
23:55Yes.
23:57So...
23:58Yes.
24:00That is operating.
24:02Brilliant.
24:03Right.
24:04All I need to do now
24:05is shut the door
24:06and see if I can get in from the outside.
24:08The proof of the pudding.
24:09Right.
24:10Let's see if it opens.
24:12Yep.
24:13Ah.
24:14There we go.
24:15You're coming out, Bean.
24:17The other issue that Fuzz noticed on our brief test drive
24:20was the steering.
24:21I just had this feeling when I was driving this
24:24that the steering was just a little bit vague.
24:27So I asked one of the fellas to rock the steering
24:31and looked underneath here.
24:33And what I found
24:34was an absolutely terminal drag-link ball joint.
24:39So that is going to have to be changed.
24:43It's an easy job,
24:45but can we get a ball joint for it?
24:48While we hunt down a spare,
24:50there's one thing we've got to get on with.
24:52A bit of artwork.
24:53So we've invited Pete, the sign writer,
24:57to come on over.
24:59And just in case it rains on his parade,
25:01we've put the transit under cover.
25:04It's a lovely old truck, 1968.
25:07So we've just got to put a little bit of icing on the cake,
25:09I think.
25:10Come on, girls.
25:12There you are.
25:13You've had a look at the van.
25:14Yep.
25:14I've got this idea, Pete,
25:16because we want to go and get some scrap metal, right?
25:19OK.
25:19And I kind of...
25:20I don't want scrap metal on it.
25:22I want colon suns in the normal way.
25:25OK.
25:25Right?
25:25Yeah.
25:26Colon suns.
25:27Right.
25:28And then I kind of think salvage.
25:31And it's a nice word, the word salvage.
25:33You've got an ascender, a capital S,
25:34a descender, the G.
25:36Is that what the sign writers call it?
25:38Ascenders and descenders?
25:38Yeah, I do.
25:39Yeah, I've heard...
25:40Yeah, but you're about the only one left.
25:42Pete starts by drawing up his design on paper.
25:47Like that.
25:47Should be nice.
25:50Salvage, there you go.
25:52Mate, that looks great.
25:54While I take jelly and the top for a walk,
25:56Pete gets to work.
25:58First he charcoals the back of his design,
26:01and then he goes over it again with a heavy pencil
26:04in order to copy it onto the door.
26:07I guess we are now ready to paint.
26:10Then, after laying down a couple of strips of tape
26:13to act as guides, he gets to work.
26:16Although it's a lovely old thing,
26:17and it's in remarkable condition for the age of it,
26:21I think, well, I'll do the lettering
26:22just a little bit worn to match the truck.
26:27Pete's chosen a mid-blue for the script
26:29to give it a vintage look,
26:31but he's not laying it on too thick.
26:34I'm going to leave it just like that.
26:36I'm like, Henry might even get a little bit
26:40of wet and dry or something
26:41and just give it a little nib off
26:43just to give it a little bit more of a wearer look.
26:47While our resident Leonardo carries on with the lettering,
26:51over at the workshop,
26:52I've got a present for the Panther Boys.
26:55Can I draw your attention
26:56to these glorious little badges?
26:59OK, yeah.
27:00I bet those were cheap.
27:01Do you know what?
27:02They were about 80 quid.
27:03What are they?
27:0480 pounds.
27:05I don't know why they're so expensive.
27:06They're cast aluminium, though.
27:07It's really nice, aren't they?
27:08Well, they really are nice.
27:10Greens Sand Foundry, it says.
27:13Anyway, look,
27:14if we can find some screws
27:16and put those on,
27:18give it a clean,
27:19and put everything back on,
27:21is it ready to roll out?
27:21Ready to go.
27:22Gears work, clutch works.
27:24I can't wait, man.
27:25I'll tell you what,
27:26I think that's going to be lovely when it's done.
27:30With Alan and Skid
27:31getting on with some useful work,
27:33I play an executive role.
27:36Right, let me do the paint work first.
27:38No.
27:39Please.
27:40Just stay calm for 30 seconds.
27:43What is the trick, Alan,
27:44to stay calm?
27:45Because you're the calmest out of all three of us.
27:48Breathe.
27:50Let it all go over your head.
27:51Don't let them get you down.
27:57And don't let me anywhere near you.
28:00The repo badges
28:01are as good as I hoped.
28:04Panther ceased production in 1967,
28:07but there are still plenty of spares available.
28:10Mate, even though they were hugely expensive,
28:12it's definitely worth it.
28:14That's lovely.
28:16Back in the hangar,
28:18Pete has finished the basic design,
28:19and is now adding some drop shadows
28:22to reinforce the 70s look.
28:24To give the lettering even more of a 3D quality,
28:28he darkens the bottom shadow
28:30with a more charcoal grey.
28:33See that?
28:34You see the difference in the two greys?
28:36You will when it's outside.
28:37It's just a little decoration
28:39that they used to do in the day
28:40on lorries and everything,
28:42and I really like it.
28:44I just really like that look.
28:49As a finishing touch,
28:50he paints on a vintage telephone
28:52and some telephone numbers.
28:55It's only taken a couple of hours,
28:57but his work has really lifted the transit.
28:59That is just what we're after, mate.
29:02Look at all that shadowing
29:03and that distress here.
29:06That's great.
29:06I love the phone, man.
29:08Well, that's the phone in the day,
29:10I guess, isn't it?
29:10Yeah, yeah.
29:111968.
29:12Oh, mate, that is fantastic.
29:14That's before the trim phone.
29:16Hey, but that's really good.
29:17Yeah.
29:17Oh, Pete, that's really added value to it.
29:19I can't wait to show the boys.
29:21Our fuzz is going to love it.
29:28Inspired by Pete,
29:29we up the ante on the Panther,
29:31cleaning and polishing
29:32every visible surface.
29:35And even giving the front forks
29:38a quick shot of rattle can.
29:40Now, finally,
29:41we're ready for our road test.
29:44For a bike that's been languishing
29:46unloved for years,
29:48this is a true resurrection.
29:50Oh, mate.
29:52That is a quality motorcycle.
29:54Quite a transformation
29:55for a little work, isn't it?
29:56Isn't it just?
29:57Yeah.
29:57Really lovely.
29:58I like that.
29:59It's a bit different as well.
30:00I've never seen a Panther 250 before.
30:03Well, shall we see if it goes
30:04up and down the drive?
30:05Let's do it.
30:05I think you've got to.
30:06Yeah, come on, then.
30:07Yeah.
30:09And we're off.
30:11Our Panther predates the transit
30:13by about ten years,
30:15and its filliers engine
30:16is a bit rougher
30:17than the Ford V4.
30:19Who's complaining, though?
30:21It's just great
30:22to get it back on the road.
30:24It goes very nicely, this.
30:26It's quite loud, though.
30:28I love it.
30:30I love it.
30:30I love it.
30:30I love it.
30:30I love it.
30:35For £1,200,
30:37this is a snip.
30:40Mate,
30:41it rides nice.
30:42You pull away very friskily.
30:43Yeah.
30:44It sounds crisp.
30:45The gears, you know,
30:46they're crisp,
30:47but they're not getting in there
30:48every time.
30:49You've got to sort of
30:49hoof them in.
30:50Clutch is dragging, probably.
30:51Yeah, it is a bit.
30:52Mate, it's beautiful.
30:53It's really for sale.
30:54Starts, runs, and rides.
30:56Yeah, mate.
30:56That's all you need.
30:57Sounds the part.
30:59Yeah.
30:59Starts fairly easily.
31:00Yeah.
31:01What more could we want?
31:02Well, not a lot.
31:03Just some money.
31:06So the Panther's looking good,
31:08and the Transit's looking great.
31:10Tomorrow, after Fuzz has sorted
31:12the last few niggles,
31:13we're going to put our Transit to work.
31:16But will Cole and Sons turn a profit,
31:18or will we end up
31:20on the scrap heap of life?
31:23Any old iron?
31:24Any old iron?
31:25Three.
31:26Four.
31:27Two weeks ago,
31:40we found a vintage Ford Transit
31:42in a container in rugby.
31:44Around the day, look.
31:45Five, six.
31:46Yeah.
31:47We tested it.
31:48What's that?
31:49Have you shrunk?
31:50My seat has collapsed.
31:54Fettled it.
31:55And adorned it.
31:59That's scrap.
32:00Now, after Fuzz has spent the morning
32:02fitting a new air filter
32:04and replacing the ball joint
32:05that finally arrived...
32:07Back and forth.
32:10Lovely.
32:11That's much better.
32:13It's time to get our Transit
32:14to do what it does best.
32:16Now, we can go scrap collecting.
32:19We're dropping the side.
32:22It all works, then.
32:24Look at that.
32:25Right, I'll get in there.
32:28Our Transit is the perfect vehicle
32:31for a bit of scrapping,
32:33starting with our own odds and ends.
32:36I can't wait to get rid of this now.
32:37This one's in the same condition as you look.
32:39Crusty.
32:42At least it's not wheezy.
32:44Come on, less of a chat.
32:46The flatbed is 10 square metres
32:48and has a carrying capacity of 2 tonnes.
32:52Right, storage, here we come.
32:56And we're off.
32:57Our mission,
32:58to make a bit of money from our Transit
33:00before we flog it.
33:01Any old iron?
33:06That's perfect.
33:08With you,
33:09it's more a case of
33:10bring out your dead.
33:11Oh, here we go.
33:11Don't be like...
33:12Long before green bins and blue bins,
33:18rag and bone men
33:19and mobile scrap merchants
33:21were the original recyclers.
33:24It's a bit like
33:25when you're selling newspapers.
33:26All right.
33:26You know, you've got your...
33:27In the tenner.
33:30In the tenner.
33:31All right.
33:31Yeah, it's the iron.
33:33Yeah, that's it.
33:34No, it's the iron.
33:35Can I just say, don't you...
33:36All right.
33:37Well, I'm very worried
33:38you're going to hook your teeth out.
33:40Well, I'll tell you what.
33:42I'll tell you what.
33:43I'd pay to see that.
33:44Blowing a bugle
33:45with false teeth is not good.
33:49Iron!
33:51The good news
33:52is that Fuzzy's hard work
33:53has paid dividends.
33:56Actually, the steering
33:57is much better,
33:58much more positive.
33:59Oh, is it?
34:00Yeah.
34:00Is it?
34:01Much less wayward.
34:02That means the wheel's
34:03going to fall off any moment,
34:05doesn't it?
34:05Unlike the passengers,
34:07very wayward.
34:08And, of course, the driver.
34:09But the steering,
34:11positive.
34:12I'm impressed
34:12the speedometer works.
34:14No, no.
34:14Everything works here.
34:15This is growing along
34:16really nicely.
34:18I love it.
34:19All I know
34:20is it's going to get us
34:21to Swindon.
34:22Hooray!
34:22To Scrapper.
34:24Yeah.
34:24Hang on,
34:25we're coming into
34:25the village now.
34:26Here we go.
34:28Here we go.
34:28Go on, you have to blow
34:32harder than that, mate.
34:34That's it.
34:34Any old iron?
34:35Any old iron?
34:36That's it.
34:36Hey.
34:38Get your iron.
34:39Any old iron?
34:41Iron?
34:41Ah, babbles.
34:46Middle-aged men in lycra.
34:48Always good to give them
34:48a shock.
34:49Thank you, Reckon, eight.
34:50Yeah, it was fine.
34:52But back in the day,
34:53you could, I'm sure,
34:55make a lot of money out of Spam.
34:57Can you still, do you think?
34:58Well, I suppose it depends.
34:59I'd love to find that out.
35:00Yeah, yeah, I think so.
35:02If there's nothing in the village,
35:04we'll head straight for my lock-up.
35:06Guys, honestly, right,
35:08there's stuff here.
35:10Stuff that I've completely forgot.
35:12Look, there's a trombone.
35:15Yeah.
35:15Hey, that can go.
35:18That leaf spring.
35:20Each sort of metal
35:21has a different value.
35:23Top whack,
35:24lead and copper,
35:25brass, second best.
35:27What are these?
35:27That might be useful.
35:30I love that.
35:31That's,
35:31that's brass.
35:36Not swinging very fast anymore,
35:37is it?
35:37No.
35:38No, it destroyed my life.
35:40And steel is just a tenth
35:41of the value.
35:43Hey, look,
35:43I think we've got ourselves
35:44quite a stash.
35:45Yeah.
35:45What do you reckon?
35:46Well, why don't we find out
35:47how much we've made
35:49out of this little lot,
35:50and then we'll find out
35:51exactly how hard
35:52we have to work in the future.
35:55Though archetypal workhorses,
35:57transit flatbeds
35:59were nicknamed little pigs
36:00because of their
36:01protruding nose.
36:03How much, though,
36:04will our own little pig
36:05make us
36:05when we take it to market?
36:08I'm going to
36:09bet you
36:10that we are going to earn
36:14about 20 quid the lot.
36:16Do you reckon?
36:17Yeah.
36:17What do you reckon?
36:19I'm going to stick
36:20my neck out here.
36:22Yeah.
36:22Because of the batteries
36:23and the leg.
36:24Yeah.
36:24I'm going to go 45.
36:26All right.
36:27Yeah.
36:28What do you think, Foz?
36:29I'm going to go in the middle.
36:30I'm going to say 30.
36:32Okay.
36:33All right.
36:33And what we've actually done
36:35is cleared all of
36:36Henry's stuff out.
36:37Yeah, we've just cleared
36:38his shed for him.
36:39That's right.
36:41Would I be so cynical?
36:44Yes, maybe.
36:45But I can't wait to find out
36:46what our haul is worth.
36:48Here.
36:48We're here.
36:49Where?
36:49It's in here.
36:54Have you noticed
36:55how quiet I'm being?
36:56I don't know.
36:56Why are you being so quiet?
36:57I'm just taking it all in.
36:59What?
37:00I've never been to a scrapyard
37:02like this.
37:03Welcome to Saunders
37:04scrap metal in Swindon.
37:06Now, Nick, look what batteries.
37:08We've got to get batteries
37:09onto our wall.
37:09We do, yeah.
37:10If we just put them
37:10onto the scales to start with,
37:11we'll get the weight.
37:12Oh, right.
37:12We weigh them in.
37:13Yeah, we weigh them
37:14and then you get paid
37:14accordingly, yeah.
37:15Do we?
37:16Yeah, 100%.
37:16Oh, how exciting.
37:18This could be our first 30p.
37:2160% of a car battery's
37:23weight is lead,
37:24about seven kilos
37:25in each one.
37:28Are you sure
37:29this is actually
37:29going to make a dent
37:30in the actual weighing machine?
37:32Well, I don't know.
37:32We'll find out
37:33in a second, won't we?
37:34I mean,
37:34I think we're saving the planet
37:36bit by battery bit.
37:39Aren't we, Skid?
37:40Yeah, but how long
37:41have we wanted to get
37:41these out of the shed?
37:42A long time.
37:43Yeah.
37:45Is that it?
37:46Come on, then.
37:47Tom, Tom,
37:47tell us how much.
37:48What weight have you got, Tom?
37:49Here we go.
37:50211 kilos.
37:51This is proper exciting.
37:53How much?
37:54211 kilos.
37:55Wow.
37:55That's probably just
37:56a couple of kilos
37:57over your weight,
37:58isn't it?
37:58Something like that.
37:59The cheek on that.
38:00The cheek I have to put up with,
38:01you will not believe it, Nick.
38:02211 kilos,
38:03and how much do we get paid?
38:04Tom, what's that in price
38:06on the money?
38:07So, £73.
38:0973 quid?
38:09There you go.
38:10That's the result.
38:11That's all right, yeah.
38:12Much better.
38:12You actually might get something.
38:14Blimey.
38:15Baking sandwich.
38:16Yeah.
38:16I thought,
38:17blimey,
38:18that is worth it,
38:19isn't it?
38:19It is, yeah.
38:19How much did you say
38:20in the van earlier?
38:21I thought we get 20 quid the lot.
38:22Yeah, and I said 45.
38:24Yeah, and 73.
38:25Well, you're still quid,
38:25isn't it?
38:25Yeah, I went in the middle.
38:26We're happy with that.
38:27Still money off on top.
38:28That's fantastic.
38:28And obviously,
38:29you've still got your scrap to go,
38:30as well, isn't it?
38:30Yeah, why, surely
38:31we're not going to get much for that.
38:32Yeah, I don't know
38:32what we're going to get for that.
38:33We'll find out as well.
38:33Okay, come on then.
38:34So, should we take the van round?
38:35Yeah, well,
38:35if you get the sides back up,
38:37pull on the big bridge
38:37so that we get the weight
38:38of the truck and the scrap.
38:40Oh, right, okay.
38:41We'll take it round next door
38:42and then we'll get it off round there.
38:43Okay, I'll bet not be in the truck then.
38:45Oh, right, okay.
38:46Okay, let's put the sides up.
38:47This is it.
38:48We're 73 quid in, Nick.
38:50Already?
38:51This is just marvellous.
38:53Fuzz does the honours with the transit.
38:55That's it, Fuzzer.
38:59Go on, son.
39:01Go on.
39:02Left hand down.
39:05That's it.
39:08That's it.
39:08He's got to keep going.
39:10You're on.
39:11So, it's 1,660 kilos fully loaded.
39:15Do you like the truck then, Nick?
39:16Yeah, I love it, yeah.
39:17It could be yours, mate.
39:18How much?
39:20Everybody's got a price.
39:21Seven grand?
39:22That's nice.
39:23I think it's all right for a Mark 1.
39:25V4?
39:26Yeah, it comes with a bugle as well
39:28that I'll be trying to entice people over
39:30for scrappage.
39:31Yeah, scrappage.
39:31You know what I mean?
39:33Now we go round to the steel and iron pile
39:36to dispense our load.
39:39Stop there?
39:39Yeah, that'll do plenty there.
39:43Lovely.
39:43Well, this'll make a big one.
39:48Nice.
39:51Lovely.
39:53We are the future.
39:55We are the recyclers.
39:57Hey?
39:57Do you know what I mean?
39:58And you've cleared a load of space.
40:00Yeah.
40:01It's made you feel good.
40:02Yeah.
40:02And you've had a little learner out of it.
40:05Yeah, well, look, we might have a little bit more.
40:06Shall we go and weigh it in properly?
40:08So we've got to put this back on the thingy.
40:10Okay.
40:11With you in it.
40:11So if it was $1,660 before, what is it now?
40:16And more importantly, what's it worth?
40:19It's the big moment.
40:20Okay, Nick, so we're 73 quid in at the moment with the batteries.
40:25What have we got now?
40:27With that, it was 180 kilos, which brings you to £18 in scrap.
40:31£18 in scrap.
40:32So, okay, batteries are the key, really.
40:34That is, yeah.
40:34Okay, hang on.
40:35That's £91.
40:37£91, yeah.
40:38£91?
40:39That's not bad at all, right.
40:40£91, that's all right, for a Friday afternoon.
40:42Nick, thank you so much.
40:43Paves the fuel bill, doesn't it?
40:45Thank you very much.
40:4691 quid.
40:46Appreciate that.
40:47Thank you very much.
40:47It's been really interesting.
40:48It's been really interesting.
40:49Greta Thunberg loves us.
40:51The planet loves us.
40:53Nick loves us.
40:54And we love you when you split it three-way.
40:57Yeah.
40:58Hang on.
40:59Okay, look, I'll do your deal, all right?
41:01Yeah.
41:01I will contemplate a three-way split.
41:03Yeah.
41:03Only if Chopper Roy values it right, the van.
41:07Okay.
41:07Okay.
41:07So let's cross fingers.
41:09I'll tell you what, if Roy says we've made some money, then I'll buy you all a cappuccino.
41:15What do you reckon?
41:16I don't like coffee.
41:17Yeah, sounds about normal.
41:18Yeah.
41:23Next day, back at the shed, we find out whether it'll be frothy coffees all round when local
41:28dealer Roy swims by.
41:30Have you seen what isn't for sale in the cab?
41:35Yeah, you wouldn't stand with that in a million years, would you?
41:37No, or them.
41:38Oh, no.
41:38Look.
41:39I thought you were talking about the Bugle not being for sale.
41:43No, no, the Bugle is perfectly available, yeah?
41:47It's just the dogs love it in there.
41:49Now then, Chopsicle, what do you reckon?
41:52Yeah.
41:53It's incredibly solid.
41:54Obviously, Roy wants a right-hand drive dash.
41:57They're not hard to convert.
41:57Roy, you're not going to exactly overtake anyone, are you?
42:01I mean, isn't it Claire?
42:03That's true.
42:03Isn't it Claire?
42:04I was thinking reversing.
42:05No, the other thing is, of course.
42:07It could have your right shoulder.
42:09If you're doing some collecting of things like, well, should we saw recycling and stuff
42:16like that along the roadside, ideal.
42:18Oh, yeah.
42:18You don't have to go out into the traffic.
42:20Grab and go.
42:21Yeah, absolutely, mate.
42:22What do you think about the Panther as well?
42:23That's nice.
42:24I really like that.
42:25Yeah.
42:26So, on the understanding that you like both.
42:31Yeah, I shouldn't have said that.
42:34What do you reckon they're worth as a pair?
42:36As a pair?
42:38I was going to say, oh, he's 60s, but you'd probably get a bit more, to be honest.
42:41I think so.
42:42They've got to be worth seven and a half of the pair.
42:43It's got to be.
42:45All right, well, let's leave it at that.
42:46Shall we?
42:46I'd like to say.
42:47If he's saying seven and a half.
42:49Yeah.
42:50We've got sign writing to take into account.
42:52All right, all right.
42:53Six, eight.
42:54Badges.
42:56Six, nine.
42:58That's about it, though, isn't it?
42:59Yeah.
43:00Pete, the sign writer.
43:01Yeah.
43:01A couple hundred.
43:02Yeah, so that's seven, one.
43:04All right, well, 400 quid profit.
43:05That's all right, isn't it?
43:07Yeah.
43:07And also, we made 91 pounds.
43:11Yeah, we did.
43:12Very true.
43:13On the weigh-in.
43:14On the weigh-in, yes.
43:15So we could just round it up as a monkey, couldn't you?
43:17Yeah.
43:18500 quid profit for basically going scrapping.
43:21Yeah, great stuff.
43:22Yeah.
43:23And what an enjoyable afternoon that was.
43:24What an enjoyable afternoon it was.
43:26I'll tell you what, mate.
43:27I love scrap yards and the people in them.
43:30You know what you're getting, don't you?
43:31You do.
43:31Yeah.
43:32That's what I like.
