00:00It's great that you've got your hands dirty.
00:05And his t-shirt, and his trousers.
00:06I'm never going to get that oil out, I've just tried.
00:08Is that because you can't operate the washing machine?
00:11Yeah.
00:13That's what we thought.
00:14Yeah, I thought so.
00:15It is true.
00:16I have been looking at it for a while.
00:18Yeah.
00:19That needs special technique and training, doesn't it?
00:21Yeah, yeah.
00:23We're back!
00:24Oh, I'm loving this.
00:25Scouring Britain's sheds for classic cars.
00:28A thing of beauty.
00:29Proper special.
00:30Quintessential Brits.
00:32That's nice.
00:33A Lee Francis.
00:34American icons.
00:35Look at the amount of chrome on the front there.
00:38And Continental Curios.
00:40That is a Lancia Aprilia.
00:43We're going to buy them.
00:44Thank you so much.
00:45Fantastic, Ludo.
00:46Sort them.
00:47It's the sunroof.
00:48No, please, I'm getting out now.
00:50Drive them.
00:52And sell them for a tidy profit.
00:54Are we really the money?
00:56This is Sheddenberry's Classic Cars.
01:06We're off in search of a classic car in Jelly's favourite county, Berkshire.
01:11We're going to go and see Peter.
01:15What's Peter's thing?
01:16What's his schtick?
01:18I don't think he'd mind me saying this, but I think he's just a little bit eccentric.
01:23Brilliant.
01:24Well, join the club.
01:25Yeah.
01:26He collects Austin Cambridge period British cars.
01:3250s and 60s.
01:33Yeah.
01:34That sounds great.
01:35The sort of thing, if you imagine a town centre car park in about 1969 or 70.
01:41Yeah.
01:42That sort of thing.
01:43Outside the international stores.
01:45Or the Mace.
01:46Mace.
01:47What else was there?
01:48Fine fare.
01:49Fine fare.
01:50Yeah.
01:51Safeways.
01:52Can I tell you something?
01:53Go on.
01:54I used to ride my boat bike up and down the Kings Road.
01:57Yeah.
01:58And there was a Safeways.
01:59All the glass down the side of the Safeways was mirrored.
02:03I know what's coming.
02:04And one day I was looking at myself so much.
02:07Yeah.
02:08I forgot there was a bollard in the middle of the road.
02:10Oh no.
02:11Really?
02:12Seriously?
02:13You hit it?
02:14No.
02:15No.
02:16OK.
02:17That just shows how ego, yeah.
02:18Yeah.
02:19Vanity.
02:20And vanity is not a good plan.
02:22No.
02:23Not at all.
02:27Whether Pete will have any mirrors other than rear views and wing mirrors, who knows.
02:31But Berkshire, here we come.
02:33Woof, woof.
02:34So Pete, look.
02:35Behind me, a couple of my favourite vehicles.
02:36Is that your thing, Land Rovers?
02:37In the army for 25 years doing Land Rovers.
02:38Subby Street moved away and now I've gone back to them.
02:39Because I mean, I've got the green one over there and we love it, don't we?
02:40Yeah, well we kind of do, but you keep complaining about your back.
02:41Oh yeah, no, look.
02:42Yeah.
02:43They're uncomfortable.
02:44Yeah.
02:45They're too hot in summer.
02:46Yeah.
02:47They're too cold in winter.
02:48They're really noisy.
02:50The short wheel base over rough ground is horrific.
02:53And we love them.
02:54And we love them.
02:55And we love them.
02:56What else would you drive?
02:57Yeah, well exactly.
02:58I've got two of them here.
02:59I alternate between these two and the Morris 8.
03:02Yeah.
03:03Yeah.
03:04Yeah.
03:05Yeah.
03:06Yeah.
03:07Yeah.
03:08Yeah.
03:09Yeah.
03:10Yeah.
03:11Yeah.
03:12And the Morris 8.
03:13Right, okay.
03:14Oh, okay.
03:15Excellent stuff.
03:16Hey Pete, so look, we'll have a little rummage about.
03:17All right.
03:18Yeah.
03:19And then we'll call you in on a few things, I'm sure.
03:20Yeah.
03:21And then at the end, hopefully we'll have a haggle.
03:23Yeah.
03:24Okay.
03:25Yeah.
03:26Thanks mate.
03:27Well, we might as well just start here.
03:28Yeah.
03:29Yeah.
03:30So Land Rover City it is.
03:32Starting with a long wheel base Landy from the early 70s.
03:37Bulkhead looks great, which is cool.
03:39The engine's in there and Pete says that he regularly uses it.
03:43So that's good.
03:44So what's it like underneath?
03:45Just wait a minute.
03:46Get under there.
03:47Well, so far it looks okay.
03:49Does it?
03:50Do you want me to have a little look at the back end?
03:51Have a quick look.
03:52I have to tell you, the key thing obviously Fuzzer is bulkhead and chassis more than anything.
03:58The rest of it's just bolt on, isn't it?
04:00What's it like?
04:01It's good.
04:02Yeah, it's good.
04:03It's very good.
04:04So look, that is a possible.
04:05And a long wheel base.
04:06Yeah.
04:07Yeah.
04:08Is really something to savor.
04:10Yeah.
04:11It is.
04:12Well, what a good start.
04:13Should we go and have a look at this Morris 8 over here?
04:14Let's do it.
04:15Pete's Morris 8 is not quite what it seems.
04:20Can you see that?
04:21That's a more modern engine.
04:22It is, yes.
04:23That's an A-series engine.
04:24So, like a Morris Minor engine, shall we say.
04:27Engines like this were cheap, cheerful and ten a penny, you know.
04:31Oh, okay.
04:32And the other one blew up.
04:33Probably so.
04:34Maybe.
04:35Yeah, somebody just popped this in and away they went.
04:39As for the rest of the car, the interior's a bit crowded.
04:42There's quite a bit of detritus in there.
04:44But at the same time, Guy can clear that out no problem.
04:47But the hood's not bad.
04:49And let's just check this out for the British summer time.
04:53That'll do.
04:54Yeah.
04:55Mate, I rather like this.
04:56I mean, obviously, you know, it's just all about price really.
04:59That's true.
05:00I have to tell you, what a good start.
05:02Let's go in, shall we?
05:03Yeah, I was going to say.
05:04Head inside.
05:05Let's have a head inside.
05:07Right, come on then.
05:08Let's have a look.
05:09Oh, look.
05:10Oh, I say.
05:11Over in the corner, there's some goodness.
05:13You're joking.
05:14You're joking.
05:15I know.
05:16I know.
05:17I know.
05:18You're joking.
05:19I never knew that.
05:20You're joking.
05:21I never knew that.
05:22I never knew that.
05:23I never knew that.
05:24But look in there.
05:25You've got two lovely, lovely, lovely bench seats.
05:27I mean, really, they're almost tiny Chesterfields, aren't they in there?
05:28Mate, I just, I mean, I love them.
05:30Perfectly presented, I would call this.
05:31This is lovely.
05:32This is lovely.
05:33This is lovely.
05:34And it comes in.
05:35Ford's traditional colour.
05:36Yeah, black.
05:37Yep.
05:38Moving outside.
05:39The main part of Pete's collection.
05:40is resolution.
05:41is resolutely British.
05:42Not really British.
05:43Look at that.
05:44What's going on?
05:45Look at that.
05:46What's going on?
05:47I don't know.
05:48Oh, I'm sorry.
05:49I've got it popping these out.
05:50I never knew that.
05:51But look in there, you've got two lovely, lovely bench seats.
05:54I mean, really, they're almost tiny Chesterfields, aren't they in there?
05:55I just, I mean, I love them.
05:56Perfectly presented, I would call this.
05:58This is lovely.
05:59This is lovely as it is.
06:00And it comes in Ford's traditional colour.
06:03Yeah.
06:04Black.
06:05Yep.
06:06Moving outside.
06:07The main part of Pete's collection is resolutely British.
06:11Look at that.
06:12What's going on there?
06:14It's a car park from the past.
06:17Full of British stuff by the look of it.
06:18Yeah.
06:19What is that?
06:20What's going on in there?
06:21Let's have a look.
06:22What's happened to the bodywork on that?
06:25I've no idea.
06:26I don't know if it's been done on purpose.
06:28Should we get it out?
06:29Yeah.
06:30Let's see how bad it is.
06:31Can we get it out?
06:32Oh, what is it?
06:33You've got the steering.
06:35That'll be the window.
06:36It works.
06:37It's a bit like your wallet that sounded the same.
06:39It is, yeah.
06:40Yeah, yeah.
06:41That's what made me excited.
06:42Yeah.
06:43I haven't got any idea of brakes and we're going downhill.
06:46Well, I am the brakes.
06:47Yeah, you're well done.
06:48So, don't go too fast.
06:49Okay.
06:50Okay, right.
06:51Our mystery car is an Austin A40 Farina.
06:55A proto hatchback designed by the Italian coachwork specialist Pina Farina.
07:01Almost 350,000 were built, but I doubt if many ended up looking like this.
07:07There you go.
07:08Yeah.
07:09My God.
07:11That's kind of crazy.
07:13Hey, Pete, come on in.
07:15What's that?
07:16Just tell me about this.
07:17It was in a shed for years.
07:19Right.
07:20A damp shed.
07:21Right.
07:22It's been lacquered to keep it like this.
07:24Right, okay.
07:25To preserve the rust, if you like.
07:27It happened by accident.
07:28It wasn't done on purpose.
07:29It happened by accident.
07:30But at the same time, the finish is quite rat rod.
07:33Yeah.
07:34It's lovely, isn't it?
07:35Especially now it's been lacquered.
07:37Hey, look, the interior is immaculate, Pete.
07:39There's no rust underneath.
07:40It's absolutely solid.
07:41Yeah.
07:42If you were sitting in this car and didn't look too closely at the bonnet, you could be in a completely restored A40 Farina.
07:49You know.
07:50What's it like under the bonnet?
07:51Oh, righty-ho.
07:52Incomplete.
07:53Yeah.
07:54There's no cylinder head.
07:55So, have you got the cylinder head?
07:56I have, yes.
07:57Have you?
07:58Yeah.
07:59It's in the other shed.
08:00So, with a gasket set, it's only an A-series engine.
08:01Put it together quite easily.
08:02Oh, really?
08:03Yeah, probably.
08:04So, any other problems with it at all?
08:05I think there's some brake parts in there as well.
08:06Oh, right.
08:07Okay.
08:08So, perhaps the braking system needs a bit of a...
08:09Well, it's only an A40.
08:10Yeah.
08:11Yeah.
08:12Probably.
08:13So, any other problems with it at all?
08:14I think there's some brake parts in there as well.
08:16Oh, right.
08:17Okay.
08:18The braking system needs a bit of a...
08:19Well, it's only an A40.
08:20Yeah, a bit of a tickle.
08:22Rebuild the braking system on this as long as the pipes are okay is, you know, not too
08:27onerous a task.
08:28But, Pete, yeah, no.
08:29Well, that's quite funky.
08:32Pete has obviously got a passion for A40s because a few tarpaulins back, he's also got
08:38an A40 Devon, the precursor of the Farina.
08:42You had your Devon.
08:43Yeah.
08:44You had your Somerset.
08:45You had your Cambridge.
08:46Counties and towns.
08:47Yeah, that sort of thing.
08:49Yeah.
08:50How's the Devon?
08:52Okay.
08:53So, there we have, I think, a slightly later engine.
08:56I think that's a B-series lump.
08:59Maybe 1600 B-series BMC engine.
09:02The interior ain't that peaky.
09:05Is it?
09:06Oh, that is beautiful.
09:08No, it's a little bit gone.
09:10I love it.
09:11Do you?
09:12I think that's great, yeah.
09:13Why don't we shut the door and reflect on the other vehicles here.
09:16Okay.
09:17Okay.
09:18Now, what do you reckon?
09:19First up, that Land Rover Series 3 long wheelbase.
09:21The cream one, I think that's got potential, you know.
09:23It depends how much it's clean.
09:24Like all these, yeah.
09:25So, look, the Morris 8 soft top.
09:27I like that.
09:28A nice little boat to knock about in.
09:30Model T.
09:31The Model T, I love it.
09:32It's going to be 12 grand or something.
09:34The A40.
09:35The A40?
09:36Rat rod.
09:37Yeah.
09:38No cylinder head.
09:40Well, I think those fixes could be easier than we think.
09:44Hey, but I think it's all really relevant to price here today.
09:47Yeah.
09:48Don't you?
09:49I do.
09:50Shall we go and find out?
09:51Yeah.
09:52Go on then.
09:53Sometimes we're focused on one thing, but here I think it's down to price more than anything.
10:03Yeah.
10:04I'm going to go in with the Morris 8 Tourer.
10:06How much?
10:077,000.
10:08Okay.
10:09So, that's your loved everyday car.
10:12Yeah, I do use it.
10:13But I can use something else.
10:14I can use a Land Rover.
10:15Yeah, alright.
10:16Talking of Land Rover.
10:17The cream-coloured long wheelbase.
10:20How much will that be?
10:21Six and a half.
10:22Now, moving inside, the Model T might be?
10:26Yeah, it is for sale.
10:27Is it?
10:28How much is that?
10:29Ten.
10:30The rather interestingly complexioned Austin A40 Farriner.
10:36Yeah.
10:37With no cylinder head?
10:38I think that was 1,800.
10:39Yeah.
10:401,800 quid.
10:41Okay.
10:42Okay.
10:43Okay.
10:44Yeah.
10:45Would you contemplate 1,600 quid for the Austin A40?
10:4917.
10:50We've been down in Berkshire with Pete and his singular collection of Landys and British
11:09cars.
11:10I haven't got any idea of brakes and we're going downhill.
11:13Well, I am the brakes.
11:15He wants 1,800 for a unique, to put it mildly, Austin A40 Farriner.
11:21But can we get it for less?
11:2317.
11:24Do you think?
11:25There's not much between the two, is there?
11:28Yeah.
11:29Right.
11:30Thank you, sir.
11:31That would be great.
11:32Yeah.
11:33Well done, Pete.
11:34That could be really cool.
11:35And it matches your complexion.
11:37Ooh.
11:38Thanks, Pete.
11:39Next day, back at the shed, we're ready to share the good news.
11:46The reason why I didn't say good morning is I'm a little bit nervous.
11:49It's an unusual purchase.
11:53You're basically saying you've bought a red.
11:55It's not got a lot of go and it's got a little less stop.
11:59Oh dear, sounds bad.
12:00But it's got quite a lot of rust.
12:01It's got all the parts with it, but not necessarily in the right place.
12:06Oh, they're in the boot?
12:07Yeah.
12:08The engine's in the boot.
12:09Right.
12:10OK.
12:11Yeah.
12:12Rather than prolonging the agony, we'll bring it on.
12:17Oh, the...
12:18Whoa!
12:19Whoa!
12:20I'm going to...
12:21Oh!
12:22I forgot it had no brakes.
12:23Well, luckily, you've not damaged anything.
12:25Look at the finish on the paint.
12:28I can live with this pop-marked paint job, but if we're ever going to take it on a road trip,
12:34first, we've got to sort out the mechanicals.
12:38A lot of the vehicle, engine-wise, is in the boot.
12:43Oh, so the brakes are in the boot?
12:44Yes.
12:45Yeah, well, that's why we've just had that little contretemps.
12:47There's a valve there hanging out.
12:49Yeah.
12:50It's new valves, these are.
12:51And look, brand new brakes as well.
12:54And drums.
12:55Yeah.
12:56I mean, those, yeah, those will be absolutely great once they're actually installed in the car.
13:00Yeah.
13:01Moving up front and under the bonnet...
13:04Oh, it turns over.
13:05...at least the lower part of the engine seems to function.
13:09It does have, not compression, but it does go up and down.
13:12It's not seized.
13:13Someone's put grease on the boards, which is a good thing.
13:15Yes.
13:16What do you reckon, then, lads?
13:17I think you're going to need a pen and paper.
13:19What for?
13:20For a list.
13:21Everything for this is readily available, certainly engine-wise anyway.
13:25Basically, the question is, are you up for the challenge?
13:30Definitely.
13:31Great.
13:32Definitely up for the challenge.
13:33Great!
13:34Great!
13:35I actually like this thing, because when it is up and running, and we're inside it,
13:40we will not be able to see the disgusting exterior.
13:43Yeah.
13:44From inside, we'll feel like we're in a minter.
13:46Can I just make a suggestion?
13:48Yes.
13:49Right?
13:50That we actually get all the stuff out, put it on that trestle table, have a cup of tea and do a stock take.
13:55Four cups of rosy later, we start on the great work.
14:00While she snoozes, explain to me where we're at.
14:04We have a cylinder head here, and we suspect that, actually, this is new.
14:09It's either new or it's been reconditioned.
14:11Yeah.
14:12So what do we need?
14:13Come on, full gasket set.
14:14Yes, so full engine gasket set, I guess.
14:17I'd go for a valve spring set, because we've only got one missing, but we may as well have them all the same.
14:22Amazing, we've got all the collets and all the clips.
14:24Perfect.
14:25Yes.
14:26This is going to take hours.
14:27Better make a swift one.
14:29Let them carry on with the list.
14:33We'll have some proper training.
14:35Okay?
14:36Training.
14:39Come here.
14:40My wife says she's trained, I'm not so sure.
14:43Come here.
14:45That's good.
14:46Now sit.
14:47Sit.
14:48Blimey, that's not bad, you know.
14:51Next stop, Crufts.
14:53Back at the shed, the stock has finally been taken.
14:57How's the list?
14:58Is it expensive?
14:59I don't think it'll be that expensive, because I think these parts are quite cheap on me.
15:03Okay.
15:04It's extensive, but hopefully not expensive.
15:07Oh, I like your style, mate.
15:09Great.
15:10All right, great.
15:11So, what's the first major job that you have to do?
15:13Clean everything up, really.
15:14Yeah.
15:15I mean, Al's already started.
15:16Well, you carry on cleaning, because I know you're itching too, Al.
15:19Within ten minutes, virtually every brush in the workshop is being gainfully employed in
15:28a mega clean-a-thon.
15:31The two biggest components are the block.
15:34I'm going to remove these three studs, so that we can clean up the top of the cylinder
15:41block.
15:42We need to make sure that we've got a nice, clean surface to work to.
15:47And the cylinder head.
15:50It's time to clean off the rust, but it's not actually rust, it's grease, protective grease.
15:54Underneath the protective grease is like a ground surface.
15:57So, this could be a really good cylinder head.
16:00The A-Series engine featured in many British cars from the 1960s until the 1990s.
16:08Fitted in everything from the Mini, to the Morris Minor, to the MG Midget, as well as several
16:14other Austin models.
16:16It was a good trip to produce.
16:17It was reliable and easy to work on.
16:19Do you know what?
16:20First, one of my earliest memories of the A-Series engine.
16:22Yeah.
16:23I was about 14, and my dad took the engine out of his Mini.
16:25Yeah.
16:26Stripped it all down and left it in the cellar in our house.
16:27Yeah.
16:28And he said, if you can put it back together, you can have it.
16:29Wow.
16:30So, I put it all back together.
16:31Yeah.
16:32And it ran great.
16:33There was a pile of bits left over.
16:35It ran great.
16:36Yeah.
16:37These sort of jobs were always given to the apprentice, weren't they?
16:42They were.
16:43Yeah.
16:44Yeah.
16:45Let's face it.
16:46We're all apprentices forever.
16:50In truth, we've been lucky with most of our recent restorations and haven't had to do such
16:55a comprehensive rebuild as this.
16:57But it's great to see everyone getting down to it, giving me the opportunity to do some
17:03strategic thinking.
17:05Fuzz and Alan have moved on to the rest of the car.
17:11The clutch is seized, so Fuzz gives the slave cylinder a few gentle taps and then Alan tests
17:17the pedal.
17:18That's working.
17:19Yeah.
17:20Brilliant.
17:21That's working.
17:22Fantastic.
17:23We've got, hopefully, a working clutch.
17:24We're one step further ahead.
17:26Fabulous.
17:27And the other thing is, we've got a full set of brake shoes and springs and everything.
17:33So, perhaps, we might not have too much missing at all.
17:37That's good, isn't it?
17:39To check the other wheels, Fuzz digs out one of the A40's original accessories.
17:45This car looks in such good condition, I am actually going to use the jacking point
17:51and the original jack.
17:53I'm going to lift up both wheels at the same time so that I can take the rear wheels off
17:58as well as the front and just see if...
18:01If that works, I'm going to be totally shocked.
18:04All the way home.
18:05Yes.
18:06Oh, ye of little faith.
18:07Fuzz extends the jack, attaches the handle and up she goes.
18:12I'm totally shocked.
18:15Well, well.
18:16There we go.
18:17I'm going to go back to my cleaning.
18:18OK.
18:19Cheers, Al.
18:20Though all the wheels do have brake shoes, they're not set up correctly.
18:24I'm going to just adjust these off a little.
18:27One, two.
18:28One, two.
18:29Let's see if this will now go on.
18:31Not quite.
18:32Still protruding a little bit.
18:33It takes a bit more fettling.
18:34One, two.
18:35But finally...
18:36One, two.
18:37Right.
18:38OK.
18:39Let's see.
18:40OK.
18:41Great.
18:42That's gone all the way home.
18:43There we are.
18:44And then this is a little access hole to reach the adjusters.
18:47Alan, meanwhile, has been working on the carburetor.
18:48Several systems on this were seized.
18:49Sorry.
18:50This is the choke enrichment device.
18:51That was seized.
18:52This was seized.
18:53This was seized.
18:54That was seized.
18:55Now it's all free.
18:56So I'm ready to go.
18:57Right.
18:58OK.
18:59Let's see.
19:00Right.
19:01OK.
19:02Let's see.
19:03OK.
19:04Great.
19:05That's gone all the way home.
19:06There we are.
19:07And then this is a little access hole to reach the adjusters.
19:10Alan, meanwhile, has been working on the carburetor.
19:13Several systems on this were seized.
19:14Sorry.
19:15This is the choke enrichment device.
19:16That was seized.
19:17This was seized.
19:18That was seized.
19:19Now it's all free.
19:21So I'm really pleased.
19:22So nice to be working on something proper for a change.
19:25Oi.
19:26Contestants.
19:28You have one hour left to finish this vehicle.
19:42Here you go, Al.
19:46OK, so it's not really ready steady car.
19:49But with the clock ticking, even I get caught up in the excitement.
19:53This is Alan's technique of constantly spraying.
19:56Which I have to say, in some situations works incredibly well.
20:00Check this all out.
20:02All the parts are all cleaned up and shiny.
20:04All the valves are polished.
20:06Cylinder head, rockers, coolant pipes, all the collets, everything's all done.
20:10Nothing's been lost in the cleaning process, which is a good thing.
20:13A really cool car to work on.
20:14Nice and simple.
20:15Everything's easy to undo.
20:16Nothing's seized solid.
20:17Everything's perfect.
20:18It's been a really good day.
20:20I can't think of the last time I've had a happier day than today.
20:24That's the joy of shed life.
20:26Things are happening.
20:27We're saving another one.
20:29We started the morning with a prang, and have finished the afternoon with a smile.
20:37He's that happy.
20:38Our car, though, is still in bits.
20:40There's plenty missing and masses to reassemble.
20:43If we're ever going to get our A40 back on the road, there's a lot more to do.
20:48Last week, we spent days cleaning, investigating, and trying to work out what was missing from
21:08our A40.
21:09All the parts are all cleaned up and shiny.
21:11All the valves are polished.
21:13Seven days later, it's time to begin the reassembly.
21:16The good news is, oh, look what's arrived.
21:21Lots of new things.
21:22The bad news is, not all of it's arrived.
21:26But at the same time, Alan's having fun with the dynamo.
21:32Before he can fit a new dynamo, Alan has to salvage the pulley from the old one.
21:37If we damage any parts on here, it doesn't really matter, because it's beyond repair.
21:41The car's been stored in the garage in damp conditions.
21:44It's rusted, everything's solid.
21:46The nut that holds the pulley in place is particularly tough to crack.
21:52It takes elbow grease, penetrating oil, and a bit of flambéing until...
22:03Oh!
22:04There we go.
22:05Let that sheared off, then.
22:06Yeah.
22:07Yeah.
22:08Bad colour!
22:09There we go.
22:10There you go, Al.
22:11There we go, the pulley's coming off.
22:12The pulley's coming off.
22:13Yes, there we go.
22:14Oh, Alan.
22:15Comes out round there.
22:16There we go, that's good.
22:17Oh, genius, Alan.
22:18Yeah.
22:19Just bits apart from the nut, we saved it all.
22:20Did it not come with the nut?
22:21It did.
22:22No worries, Sid.
22:23We've got any nut.
22:24We're laughing.
22:25Yeah.
22:26How's the burn?
22:27Oh.
22:32Replacing the wipers is a different sort of challenge.
22:35The spares don't fit, so Fuzz tries to grind them down to size.
22:39A little bit too thick, a little bit too wide.
22:42Well, like me.
22:43I didn't say that.
22:44No, but I can tell in your eyes.
22:47I can tell in your eyes that's exactly what you meant.
22:54I join in.
22:57It's all going remarkably well.
23:00But my enthusiasm gets the better of me.
23:03I've rubbed the knob off.
23:05Yeah, I can see that.
23:06You're not supposed to do that.
23:07I know.
23:08You go and make the tea.
23:12I'll finish this off for you, shall I?
23:17From sorcerer's apprentice to tea boy.
23:20I'm seeking solace in a biscuit and a cup of tea.
23:28The only way to redeem myself is to help Alan with the cylinder block.
23:32Which way should this go?
23:33That way?
23:34Yeah.
23:35First, we fit a new thermostat.
23:37Seated nicely.
23:38So there you are.
23:39That is our first sub-assembly.
23:43Then we move on to the dark art of valve fitting.
23:47All we've got to do is clean up this surface.
23:49It's nice and smooth and flat.
23:50It matches the valve exactly to give a gas-tight seal.
23:53Armed with a tin of abrasive paste and a special tool called a suction valve grinder, we lap the valves into a perfect fit.
24:01It's quite good now you're getting trained up.
24:03I can sit down and relax while you do the work.
24:05Well, I wouldn't say that mate.
24:06You go horribly wrong.
24:07Once all eight valves are done, there's plenty more parts to fit, but after another good day in the office, we'll save that pleasure for tomorrow.
24:17Next day, the Jelly Bean and the Jelly Tot have come for a look-see.
24:33Having a puppy?
24:34Now my kids are fully grown.
24:36It's like having another baby.
24:38But Alan's focused on stage two of the engine rebuild.
24:42Okay, valve in.
24:44Number four.
24:45Yeah.
24:46The number four.
24:47Okay.
24:48You've got to put one of those on there.
24:51Oh, right.
24:52One of those on there.
24:53Oh, right.
24:54One of those on there.
24:55Then we have to compress it with a valve spring compressor.
24:58Have we got a valve spring compressor?
25:00I've bought an old one.
25:01Oh, that'll do.
25:02This is 1950s.
25:03Oh, yeah, mate, but that's quality, mate.
25:07The back end of each valve is a complicated assembly of springs, clips, seals and collets.
25:13I continue my apprenticeship.
25:16So far, so good.
25:17Yeah, so far, so good.
25:21And Alan does what he does best, systematically putting it all together.
25:25An hour later, all eight valves are fitted and we're ready to put the cylinder head back onto the engine.
25:32First, he installs a gasket and then the head itself.
25:36Yeah, okay, got it.
25:37Are you going to be all right with that?
25:38Of course then.
25:43So the head is on.
25:44Yeah.
25:45Alan, this is crazy.
25:47Now we can put on the rocker.
25:50As the assembly continues, Alan drops in the pushrods and the rocker arms.
25:56And I get down and dirty, cleaning off an old gasket from one of the engine covers.
26:02Am I getting dirty so you don't have to?
26:05Technically, I'm assembling the engine which should be done in a clean environment.
26:08If I get a dirty t-shirt, what do I do? Bill you?
26:11Yeah, I'd probably be doing some work.
26:13When we bought this car, I didn't understand how intimate I was going to have to get with an A-Series engine.
26:20But with the carb going on, and then the spark plugs, it really is starting to come together.
26:26And even better, it's inspired me to form a plan.
26:30We're going to get the tweed jackets on in this because it's very bucolic.
26:35It's very much sort of period BBC drama.
26:38So I thought what would be nice, that we should go to a country show.
26:42That sounds nice.
26:43Yeah?
26:44With sheep shearing and things like that.
26:45Yeah, sheep shearing, tractors for sale, have an ice cream.
26:49Just all in all, take in the Morton in Marsh country show.
26:53That's what we're going to do.
26:54And it's a few days away, so we've got time to test this out before we go.
26:59There's just one more thing to put on the engine, and fortunately next morning, it turns up.
27:11So, Al, look, I've been absent while you've been rebuilding this engine.
27:14Apparently you had a hand from Henry, is that right?
27:16He was really good.
27:17He's got his T-shirt dirty and his trousers.
27:19Oh, oh my God.
27:20Well, look, I've got some widgets here for you.
27:22Well, the new rocker covers arrived.
27:24Oh, that's what you were waiting for, is it?
27:25Let's just hope it fits.
27:26It's quite a tight fit getting them on.
27:28Yeah, very good.
27:29That's it.
27:30There we go.
27:31That fits lovely.
27:32Right, rubbers first.
27:33Right.
27:34Then the chrome washers.
27:37Looking really good, isn't it?
27:40While Al's putting on the finishing touches, I've got an errand to run.
27:47We need to get a little piece of chrome trim for the bodywork just in front of the door.
27:55Yeah.
27:57So I'm off to Maidenhead to meet someone who I hope will have the spares.
28:03Say hello to Derek and his friends at the A40 Farina Club.
28:07Hello, I'm Henry.
28:08Hi, I'm Martin.
28:09Hello, Martin.
28:10I'm Peter.
28:11Peter.
28:12Hi, I'm Anna.
28:13Anna, lovely to see you.
28:14I'm Henry.
28:15Now look, I thought I was just going to pick up a little bit of Ali.
28:17Oh, it's never that straightforward, isn't it?
28:19Look at these.
28:20Now tell me, what is it about the Austin A40?
28:23They were a family car.
28:24Every time I take her out, there's people going, I passed my driving test in there.
28:28It's like, do you want to sit inside it?
28:29Can I?
28:30Yeah, of course you can.
28:31And they got smiles from ear to ear.
28:33I think it's just the lines, the Pinion Farina design.
28:36I think it was innovative at the time.
28:38And it was very, very different from all the previous UK-made cars.
28:43The club has 420 members worldwide devoted to this iconic car.
28:49Now, Peter, we've got a Mark II, but I'll tell you what, it looks nothing like that.
28:54Well, it's been a labour of love.
28:56I've had it since 1983.
28:58It sat in a garage for 30-odd years.
29:01And then just before lockdown, I started working on it.
29:04All right, so lockdown was beneficial in some ways, eh, Martin?
29:06Oh, it's marvellous.
29:07Do you know what I mean?
29:08People like Peter are in there, beavering away.
29:10I think we took about £60,000 in spare parts that year.
29:14But talk about spares.
29:18Have you got any parts?
29:19I've been on them.
29:20Have you got any?
29:21Run out of them.
29:22Have you got any parts?
29:23Look, I've just seen them in the garage.
29:25Come on, come on.
29:28Derek's garage is an Aladdin's cave with everything from brakes to bumpers
29:33to bearings.
29:34And luckily for me, plenty of trim.
29:38Now those look right.
29:41So these obviously have come off other A40s.
29:44Yes, that's right.
29:45Yeah?
29:46And people have collected them and then donated them to us usually.
29:49I've driven all over the country.
29:50Sometimes I've hired a van, sometimes I've taken my own car.
29:52Right, okay.
29:53And the wives are always pleased to see me come to collect all this junk.
29:56Well, I'm sure they are.
29:57Yeah.
29:58My wife would love to see you.
29:59I have to tell you.
30:02But before she gets on the blower, time for me to get back to the shed.
30:06Fuzz has arrived and the engine looks complete.
30:11It's all together.
30:12That's it.
30:13We're ready for our first start.
30:14Hopefully it's going to go.
30:15Yeah.
30:16Genuine teamwork.
30:17I mean, obviously I've rebuilt most of it.
30:19Does it work?
30:20I know you haven't tried it yet.
30:21We haven't tried it.
30:22Come on Al.
30:23Spark it up Al.
30:24I've primed it all up with easy starts which might just work straight away.
30:26All right, go on then.
30:27Yeah.
30:28Oh, this is really exciting.
30:29Do you honestly think it'll just work?
30:31I do, yeah.
30:32I think it will.
30:33Yeah.
30:34You?
30:35Yeah.
30:36Go on then.
30:37Give it a go.
30:38Don't work.
30:39Nearly.
30:40Yeah.
30:41There we go.
30:42Yes.
30:43Perfect.
30:44Look at that.
30:45That sounds rather nice.
30:47Yeah.
30:48Just like a Swiss watch.
30:51And it ticks over nicely as well.
30:53Yeah.
30:54Shall we see if it goes?
30:55Let's take it out of the drive.
30:56Let's do it.
30:57Come on then.
30:58Who's driving?
30:59You.
31:00Buzz?
31:01Me?
31:02I don't mind.
31:03All right.
31:04I'll go in the back now.
31:05Go on then.
31:07Oh, that's smooth.
31:08Oh, it is, isn't it?
31:09It doesn't sound smooth.
31:10I'm so surprised you built the engine.
31:12Oh, yeah.
31:13No, I did.
31:14Yeah.
31:15Of course I did.
31:19Just before you do anything, try the brakes.
31:22Not too hard.
31:23They work really good.
31:24And it stops as well.
31:25They work really good.
31:26Yeah.
31:27Really.
31:31I have to admit, there were moments when I thought I'd made a big mistake.
31:35But look at it go.
31:37People.
31:38We're in third gear.
31:39Well done.
31:40I mean, it drives.
31:41It drives really well.
31:42It seems rather lovely.
31:44Long live the A-Series engine.
31:48But is the gearbox just as reliable?
31:51I'll just turn round here.
31:54Do you know where reverse gear is?
31:56I reckon it could be here.
31:58Is it up or down?
32:00Oh, he's found it.
32:01Well done.
32:02Oh, mate.
32:03Honestly.
32:04I never had it.
32:05I never doubted him, you know.
32:06I didn't doubt it.
32:07Everything on this car is first time.
32:11So we've passed the reverse test, the start-up test and the brake test.
32:16Well, I think this has been a massive success, this test drive.
32:17Yeah.
32:18But I think it's going to get us to Morton and Marsh, to the country show.
32:19No problem.
32:20Easily.
32:21I think so too.
32:22So what could possibly go wrong?
32:23Everything.
32:24That'll be the window.
32:25A month ago, we found an ugly duckling in a shed in Berkshire.
32:46My God, that's kinda crazy.
32:50kind of crazy we stripped it it's extensive but hopefully not expensive
32:57sorted the brakes and rebuild the engine so the head is on this is great and now
33:09with the addition of that piece of trim from the owners club is it the right
33:14length first of all looks like it yeah so let's get one on oh there we go that's
33:21clipped on nicely our A40 is finally ready to go to the ball or to be more
33:28precise the annual Morton in Marsh country show okay look the Sun is shining
33:34on the righteous as always we don't have any tweed but what we do have is
33:38motivation yes motivation to go to one of the greatest country shows in England
33:43I'm very confident as well this is going to make it I know that's the
33:45famous last words and I never do a cup half full but there we go I think it'll
33:50make it yeah same here
33:54and away we go so yeah I used to go to country shows with the old man yeah when
34:01I was younger up your Norfolk what was your favorite part of a country show what
34:05did you like the most guinea pigs guinea pigs have I told you yes have I told
34:12you yes you have that the cavies were my life
34:17today we're the guinea pigs testing a car that was in pieces just a few weeks
34:23ago but now is heading out on a 50 mile round trip I have to say though the A40
34:30feels great although I can't vouch for the driver
34:35oh blimey you nearly had us in ahead let's get there shall we yeah must say
34:43it's going really well it's rather lovely this car do you know what I'm
34:47wrackling you're absolutely right it's all right
34:53I've just realized that it hasn't got any wing mirrors you've got a rear view one
34:58yeah yeah you're not saying I need it while you're driving I've got this all-round
35:01view look 360 often cars didn't have wing mirrors option extra yeah can I just say
35:09though driving it looking across the bonnet yeah it looks like you're driving a toad
35:17whether our toad will turn out to be a prince we'll find out later when chopper Roy comes a
35:23calling but all is good as we reach Morton next stop the annual show
35:35it's been running since 1949 a one-day extravaganza with traditional crafts
35:42and parades a go-go please be aware while these tractors moving around the show
35:48that they're not like a bomb
35:50this is great all we gotta do is find ourselves a little nice place to park yeah
35:58there's a lot of people walking around here yeah I mean are we in the right
36:02what a car park it says this way it doesn't say parking though does it I mean there's a nice
36:08space there mate there's kenya running here look at that look at this we're off and away
36:14what on earth is going on here there's a blue with a microphone people driving about around the
36:20ring completely lost there we go that's great you can't park there sir I think this is a device
36:29so they don't have to pay to get in this lot are we in the wrong place I think you might be are you
36:36sure is that what they call patina no in the antiques trade it's a bit of a wreck I have to
36:43tell you but um the car itself is nice fuzz just looks like that every day boy yeah I've got to tell
36:50you right this is an a40 that we have restored uh from the inside out we haven't quite got to the
36:57out yet I think we're probably in the wrong place right I think that was sort of the conclusion we
37:04came to yes okay well we better go and find ourselves somewhere to park properly right what's
37:10happening next after that inauspicious entrance the Morton show is as good as I'd hoped there are
37:17traditional attractions like the petting tent can I just draw your attention to my favourite things
37:24here which are the guinea pigs also can I draw your attention to those strangely coloured sheepage
37:30oh yeah I prefer the dude at the end he is a dude man he looks a bit like you actually skid
37:36well I do have an affinity with him from here yeah can you buy these things I might buy Alan a goat
37:41and elsewhere some less traditional country pursuits as well as a modern-day version of the maypole
37:49or not quite that's it now this knee to the pole and hold it and then as you put yourself around
37:58squeeze your legs together oh I think I've strained something I'm feeling a bit dizzy when do you stop
38:10having made an entrance in the a40 which I'm glad to say is getting a lot of attention we've been roped
