00:00Can I just say, what is that?
00:08What?
00:09The hat!
00:10It's your new look.
00:11What a jaunty angle!
00:12Where is that?
00:14No, no.
00:15Orange.
00:16Neufrancon.
00:17You just look a bit like Benny Hill now.
00:20I don't look like Benny Hill.
00:21No, you don't.
00:22You look perfect.
00:23I can't get with the jaunty angle.
00:25That's my problem.
00:26Maybe it's the hair.
00:27You've got too much of it.
00:30We're back.
00:31Oh, I'm loving this.
00:32Scouring Britain's sheds for classic cars.
00:35A thing of beauty.
00:36Proper special.
00:37Quintessential Brits.
00:39That's nice.
00:40A Lee Francis.
00:41American icons.
00:43Look at the amount of chrome on the front there.
00:46And continental curios.
00:48That is a Lancia Aprilia.
00:50We're going to buy them.
00:52Thank you so much.
00:53Fantastic, Ludo.
00:54Sort them.
00:55It's the sunroof.
00:56No, please, I'm getting out now.
00:58Drive them.
00:59And sell them for a tidy profit.
01:02Are we ready for the money?
01:04This is Sheddenberry's classic cars.
01:11We're off to Billingshurst in West Sussex on a road that's dear to my heart.
01:16We will be travelling on the A272.
01:20Fantastic.
01:21And I will salute my father.
01:26It was his favourite road.
01:28Was it?
01:29From Winchester to Billingshurst.
01:31Do you know, that's a lovely thing isn't it?
01:33I didn't know that.
01:34No.
01:35He used to go on it every Saturday.
01:37Yeah.
01:38Antique finding.
01:39Fabulous.
01:40Or antique dealing.
01:41That's what he did for a living.
01:42Yeah.
01:43We used to find a priest in a little village called Brandy.
01:46And we buried father in the church in Brandy.
01:49Do you know, I'm touched by that.
01:52It's a lovely thing.
01:53Can I just tell you where we're going though?
01:55Please do.
01:56We are going to go and see Terry.
01:58I spoke to him on the phone.
02:00I think he's into Americana.
02:02Oh, okay.
02:03He hasn't got a lot, but what he's got has no rot.
02:08Okay.
02:09Well, that's good.
02:10We don't want rot.
02:11No.
02:12Yeah.
02:17Whether we come back with a pristine classic or a rotten old rust bucket, who knows.
02:22But Billingshurst, here we come.
02:26Fuzzer, what are you looking at?
02:30Nothing.
02:31Can I just tell you the difference between that and me?
02:35Please do.
02:36It's got its own teeth.
02:38I've got this feeling I'm in a sort of hot rod shop.
02:43Yeah, more of a hobby hot rod shop.
02:45Yeah, yeah.
02:46It's a hobby hot rod shop.
02:47Yeah.
02:48Tell me about how you got into all that.
02:49Always been into it.
02:50Have you?
02:51Yeah.
02:52Ever since I was young, always been into cars, hot rods, muscle cars.
02:55Lately got into more American vans.
02:58Back in the day, everybody was doing Escorts, Mariners.
03:01I was doing Chevys and Dodgers.
03:03Simple as that really.
03:04Were you really?
03:05Yeah.
03:06Bigger, more power.
03:07Yeah.
03:08Better noises.
03:09That's what it's all about.
03:10It's all about the noise.
03:11Yeah.
03:12Okay.
03:13Lots of tasty looking motor cars around here.
03:15Yeah.
03:16Can they all be persuaded away from you?
03:18If the price is right.
03:19Brilliant.
03:20Well look, we'll have a little rumage.
03:21Okay.
03:22Might call you in on some stuff.
03:23No problem.
03:24Yeah.
03:25Fantastic.
03:26Hopefully, by the end of it, we might have a haggle.
03:28Sounds good to me.
03:29Great.
03:30All right, mate.
03:31Fantastic.
03:32See you later.
03:33See you later.
03:34We're going to get involved here.
03:39Terry's first hot rod.
03:40It's a bit of a mongrel.
03:42What we've got.
03:43V8.
03:44A Rover V8 engine there.
03:45So based on the old Buick lump of the 1960s.
03:49And then at the front here, if I'm not mistaken, that is a Jaguar.
03:54Front clip.
03:55Yeah.
03:56And then, you like a dance, don't you?
03:58Do you like a Morris dance?
04:00Because this is a Morris.
04:02Come on.
04:03It's a Morris from Oxfordshire.
04:05Oh, look.
04:06There's a Jaguar rear axle as well.
04:08Oh, okay.
04:09I just love it.
04:10Now look, would you slam that or not?
04:11When you're saying slam, you're talking about chop, aren't you?
04:14Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:15Would I chop it?
04:16I mean, I like it as it is.
04:17Well, shall we go from the sublime to the slightly ridiculous?
04:21Come on then.
04:25If the Morris is a work in progress, this is the finished item.
04:28A Vauxhall Cresta.
04:30But unlike any Cresta I've ever seen.
04:34Now look, Swamp Witch.
04:36Swamp Witch.
04:37Yeah.
04:38Just talk to me.
04:391970s Vauxhall Cresta.
04:43Is this all your behaviour, Jerry?
04:45Yeah.
04:46What inspired that?
04:47It's old school, 70s paintwork.
04:48Just put a base coat down, cover it in a lace curtain.
04:51Yeah.
04:52Spray through it.
04:53Oh, wow.
04:54I've never ever heard of that.
04:56Very cool.
04:57And do you come up with Swamp Witch?
04:59There's an old song.
05:00Oh, yeah?
05:01And one of the lines in it is, just mentioned Swamp Witch.
05:03And I just thought, I could use it on the car.
05:05Yeah, great man.
05:06Hey, look, Terry, it's fantastic.
05:07Yeah.
05:08It embodies the whole 70s vibe.
05:10Yeah, super cool.
05:11And I love it, mate.
05:12I love it.
05:13I'm stuck in the 70s in music.
05:14Nothing wrong with that.
05:15Yeah.
05:16And dress sense as well.
05:17Come on, shall we go?
05:22Outside, Terry's yard seems to go on and on.
05:26But before long, we encounter one of his American vans.
05:30Now this...
05:31It's a bit dodgy.
05:32It's very...
05:33I can see what you did there.
05:35Oh, sorry mate, I had to do it.
05:36Yeah, well it is.
05:37It's a Dodge Tradesman 200.
05:38The Dodge Tradesman, a.k.a. the Ram, was a hugely popular American van that stayed in production
05:49from the 70s until the 2000s.
05:52There were lots of variants, but none quite like this.
05:59I have never seen one of those in a vehicle before.
06:04It's a chaise long.
06:05It's a chaise long.
06:06Look at that.
06:09Oh mate, I could get into this.
06:11Look at the roof lining as well.
06:13Oh.
06:14Oh gosh.
06:15It's almost as if you know exactly what to do.
06:19You were born to use a chaise long, weren't you?
06:22Yeah.
06:23Do you have somebody feeding you grapes?
06:24Yeah, I do.
06:25I could have grapes here.
06:26I could just go Fulham Road, please.
06:28Isn't it great?
06:29I love it.
06:30Yeah.
06:31Honestly, mate.
06:32Oh, careful, he's fallen out of bed.
06:35Are you coming?
06:36Yeah, alright, go on.
06:37You coming?
06:38Oh, hang on.
06:41Next door, Terry's got a modern Ford, which is not so charming.
06:45But round the corner, there's a vintage Humber Hawk.
06:49This would be sort of like late 50s, early 60s kind of thing.
06:52I love it.
06:53I love the patination.
06:54So do I.
06:55Look at the interior, it's beautiful.
06:58Like the Dodge, it may not be quite what it seems.
07:04Oh.
07:05Oh yeah.
07:06Oh dear, that's amazing.
07:07Take a look under there.
07:09So we've got a Chevy V8.
07:11It fits in absolutely perfectly.
07:14It's perfect.
07:17The 1960 Humber Hawk was a large family saloon, which was also an early estate car.
07:24It was equipped with a big 2.2 litre engine, but not as big as this.
07:29Terry, come on in mate, come over here.
07:32Did you do this?
07:33I put that engine in.
07:34You did?
07:35Yeah.
07:36That came out of a drag car.
07:38It's never been proven, it's about 300 brake horse.
07:41Okay, well that's enough to pull this along.
07:43Without a doubt, and it does pull it along as well.
07:46Really?
07:47It really does.
07:48It's also got a 727 torque flight in it.
07:50Okay, we're talking gearboxes now, Henry.
07:52We've moved further back.
07:53I was just smiling.
07:55Yeah, I don't know what he's talking about.
07:57All I do know is I can't wait to drive it.
08:00That's if we buy it though.
08:02The problem is with stuff like this, is that there is just a specific market for it.
08:06There is, yeah.
08:07It's very specialised.
08:09Difficult to sell.
08:10Very difficult to sell.
08:12In that case, I'd better keep it.
08:14No, you're alright Terry.
08:17Before we bid on anything though, there's one more shed to check out.
08:22It's got an Austin Morris van, in need of attention.
08:28It's something that I probably wouldn't drive, but at the same time I can see the appeal of it.
08:35And a vast Pontiac saloon.
08:39The scale of these things, that's what you don't get when you sort of see them on TV.
08:44No.
08:45The size of it.
08:46When you're standing next to them, I mean that is, that's a table tennis table, isn't it?
08:50Almost there.
08:51That's a one bed flat in there mate.
08:52Yeah.
08:54So plenty on the menu, but what are we going to order?
08:57So we've got that Dodge panel van.
09:00Yep.
09:01Yeah.
09:02Yeah, that's great.
09:03We've got the Swamp Witch.
09:04That's right.
09:05That's very cool.
09:06But most importantly, let's be honest.
09:09There's the Bar Humber.
09:10We kind of like the Bar Humber, don't we?
09:12Yeah, we do.
09:13You alright mate?
09:14Well come on, shall we go and have a haggle?
09:15Yeah, come on.
09:16Alright.
09:21Now Terry, we've had rather a nice wanderabout as you know.
09:25Yes.
09:26But it's now time to try and do a deal.
09:30Yes.
09:31We're leaning against it like we own it already.
09:34I mean, what would it take to own it?
09:37It's got to be round about the 11-12k mark.
09:40Okay.
09:41Now, the Swamp Witch.
09:44Yep.
09:45What would it take for you to park with it?
09:47As it sits there now, seven.
09:49Seven grand.
09:50Okay.
09:51We're leaving the worst till last, aren't we?
09:54Yeah, I mean really.
09:56If we had to.
09:57I mean, we may as well just ask the price.
09:59Yeah.
10:00Anyway.
10:01For the Humber.
10:02Ten grand.
10:03I think I'm feeling a bit ill.
10:05The amount of work that's in that car, there's five grand's worth of engine and gearbox in it alone.
10:10Seven?
10:11Nah.
10:12It's got to be very close to ten grand.
10:14Eight?
10:15Nah.
10:16We're in Sussex with Terry and his fabulous collection of cars and vans.
10:33I have never seen one of those in a vehicle before.
10:38That's a shame.
10:39It's a shame long.
10:40It's a shame long.
10:41We've offered eight grand for a suit-top Humber Hawk, but he's not impressed.
10:48What comes after eight?
10:49Eleven.
10:50Well, go on then.
10:51Does nine come after eight?
10:56Nine does come after eight.
10:57Yeah.
10:58Yeah.
10:59But it doesn't come anywhere near ten.
11:01I suppose if you went to half before, it might help, Matt.
11:04Nine and a half?
11:05Hmm.
11:06Yeah.
11:07Nine and a half?
11:08Nine and a half.
11:09Go on, mate.
11:10Okay.
11:11All right.
11:12Fantastic.
11:13Thank you so much.
11:15I have to tell you, man, I have had a ball today.
11:19Next day, back at the ranch, a hawk has landed.
11:26I think they like it, you know.
11:28Look at them.
11:29I don't know, mate.
11:30You can never tell with Alan.
11:31Yeah.
11:32No, I think...
11:33Look, he's got a smile on his face.
11:35It's the right colour.
11:36Yeah.
11:37I agree with you.
11:38The car is nice.
11:39I love the shape of it.
11:40Feast your eyes on the bonnets.
11:42There we go.
11:43Oh, that's nice.
11:44That's not original, is it?
11:45No.
11:46It's a 318 cubic inch.
11:49So, what's that in litreage?
11:51About 5.7, isn't it?
11:525.7, there we go.
11:53It's massive.
11:54It is.
11:55Well, it's enough to pull this big old barge along, isn't it?
11:58Because this is a heavy old car.
12:00And the other encouraging thing is, a lot of this looks new.
12:03And it's been very well done.
12:04Yes.
12:05Very neatly installed.
12:06So, obviously, we'll get it up and running.
12:08And, well, I think we should take it somewhere to see how fast it goes.
12:11Yeah.
12:12Can I just add one thing, though?
12:14What?
12:15When I got it off the trailer, there was a puddle underneath it.
12:19And it was an oily puddle.
12:20How long was it running?
12:21Not very long.
12:22It was like...
12:23So, it's got a massive oil leak.
12:24Don't.
12:25If that's the rear crankshaft seal, which costs about £5.
12:27Yeah.
12:28I think I have the engine out to change it.
12:29So, it's bonnet off.
12:30Engine mounting's off.
12:31Drain all the fluids.
12:32Yeah.
12:33Out it comes.
12:34Oh, well.
12:35It's a challenge.
12:36Can I just put a bit of brightness on this?
12:37Oh, I've been cleaned out.
12:38Which is unusual for me.
12:39I've been cleaned out.
12:40No, no, no.
12:41It might not be the crank seal.
12:42It might not be that.
12:43It could be an all-cooler hose.
12:44Yes, it could be.
12:45It could be.
12:46We might get lucky.
12:47Yeah.
12:48Alright.
12:50First things first.
12:51Fuzz gets down and dirty.
12:53Jacking the car up.
12:54Ooh.
12:56Do you want a hand?
12:57No?
12:58Good.
12:59Okay, you carry on.
13:00It's just a bit of exercise.
13:01No, you're going very well.
13:02Look at all that weight you're pulling up.
13:04What I would like you to do...
13:06Yep.
13:07Start it up.
13:08Start it up.
13:19You see where it's coming from?
13:23The good news is that I can't find an oil leak at all.
13:26It hasn't dropped a drip.
13:28As far as the oil pressure is 90 psi.
13:3090 psi.
13:31And that's great because that means there's oil in the engine.
13:33Plenty of it.
13:34It might be some sort of weird little anomaly.
13:38What is that?
13:39Like a spill.
13:40Could have been from a previous car on the trailer.
13:42Can I make a suggestion?
13:43Yeah.
13:44Do you think it might be a good idea to just drive it down my drive and back?
13:48I think so.
13:49And see if there's a trail.
13:54Found a little hat for you.
13:55Is that what you used to wear in the corner of the classroom?
13:58Yeah, a dunce hat.
13:59Here we go!
14:00We're off!
14:01We're off!
14:10The engine's running well and the oil pressure is still good.
14:13But before long there's an ominous sound.
14:19What is that noise?
14:22A bit of rubber skimming.
14:23A bit of interference between the offside rear tyre and the offside rear wheel arch.
14:30Could be the weight of the passenger.
14:31It may be the weight of the passenger.
14:33That is a terrible noise.
14:34We've got to fix that.
14:35I can smell burning rubber now.
14:36Oh yeah, so can I.
14:37I don't know.
14:38It smells more oily.
14:39I think we probably need to abort.
14:40I think we should put it back by the workshop.
14:41Maybe do a little bit of tapping.
14:42So more work for the job sheet.
14:43And when we get back, it only gets worse.
14:44We've got a radiator leak.
14:45Oh lord.
14:46Why is it overheating then?
14:47The thing is it hasn't got the original fan on, has it?
14:48No.
14:49No.
14:50So all we've got is this fan.
14:51And at the moment, it's only operating at a single speed.
14:52That's not good, is it?
14:53That isn't good, no.
14:54The thermostat is opening, though, because it's hissing out the radiator.
14:55Yeah, that's right.
14:56So we've got full steam on the engine.
14:57And we've got the radiator leak.
14:58We've got a radiator leak.
14:59Oh lord.
15:00Why is it overheating then?
15:01The thing is it hasn't got the original fan on, has it?
15:02No, no.
15:03So all we've got is this fan.
15:04And at the moment, it's only operating at a single speed.
15:05That's not good, is it?
15:06That isn't good, no.
15:07The thermostat's opening though, because it's hissing out the radiator.
15:21Yeah, that's right.
15:22So we've got full circulation.
15:25But what we don't have is full cooling.
15:29So look, okay, so now we're getting involved with overheating, when actually we haven't really saw it.
15:35Has the oil leak gone away?
15:37There is a little bit of an oil leak from the bellhousie.
15:41However, we might be able to get away with something slightly, well, not poor practice, but you know, something to get us out of a hole.
15:51Stop leak.
15:52Yes.
15:53I've got some transmission stop leak stuff.
15:55Yeah.
15:56Also, we should put some radiator sealer in the radiator as well.
15:58That all sounds quite a cheap option, which is good.
16:01Well, those are our first ports of call.
16:03So there's the tyre, there's the oil, and there's the water.
16:08Brilliant.
16:09And we have to check it's charging.
16:10And it's not charging.
16:11And it's not charging.
16:12Yeah.
16:13And in all, it's absolutely worth nine and a half grand.
16:17Not.
16:18Yet.
16:19God.
16:20So when the going gets tough, best to let everyone else get going.
16:28First, the electrics.
16:30Let's get the probe on because that will give us a read out of what voltage we're getting.
16:35The voltage we're getting.
16:36Yeah, the voltage.
16:37So, 11.8.
16:38Yeah, it's a bit low, isn't it?
16:40Okay, it is a bit low.
16:41Definitely a bit low.
16:42Yeah, so we've lost charge.
16:44So, perhaps if we get the alternator rigged up or see if we can get it to power up.
16:50Should resolve the problem.
16:51Yeah.
16:52I've got to get on that.
16:53Alright, cool.
16:56Alan starts it up.
16:59But the voltage...
17:0111.8.
17:03...doesn't change.
17:05Can I give it a little rev?
17:09Watch out, it's all right?
17:11Uh-oh!
17:12Alan slams on the handbrake.
17:16Why did it shoot back in park?
17:18Because I think that it wasn't quite in park.
17:23I think we were just between park and the next ratio or the next selector is reverse.
17:29I did like Al's quick movement though, but did you see him trying to catch up with the car as it moved?
17:34He's like an eel, I've told you.
17:35We all know that.
17:37So, more problems for the job sheet.
17:39But after a bit more investigation, there's good news on the electrical front.
17:45He's left the wire off and he alternated to the battery.
17:47Oh, there we are.
17:48It's a simple job.
17:49Well, that's good.
17:50At least that's an easy fix.
17:51That's one problem solved.
17:52Let's get the engine stop leak in, shall we?
17:54Yes.
17:55And the radiator weldy-weldy.
17:56Okay.
17:57And then sell it.
18:02After a quick rummage in me storeroom.
18:04Well, have you got radiator?
18:08Yeah, radiator weld.
18:10I've got two tins of engine stop leak here.
18:14We try to plug the leaks.
18:18In goes the engine seal.
18:20Be interested to see if it works.
18:21Yeah.
18:22And then the rad seal.
18:27Okay, so that's all the leaks hopefully fixed.
18:34All there remains to do is finish the electrics.
18:37So, Al, you're running a wire from the alternator to that terminal over there.
18:42I am.
18:43Well, I've done a cut the little thing so it slides on.
18:46Oh, okay.
18:47Excellent.
18:48Which one are we going to?
18:49That's the back one.
18:50This one?
18:51That one goes straight to the battery.
18:52Okay.
18:54I just don't think that this car has quite been finished.
18:57It's not had a shakedown.
18:59There's just a few things left for the new owners.
19:02Exactly.
19:03Yeah.
19:04Like we always do.
19:05Yes.
19:06How are you getting on?
19:10We're just attaching a wire from the alternator to a feed to the battery,
19:16which then will mean that the alternator will actually start to charge the battery up.
19:23The only thing that worries me, mate, is this overheating.
19:26I'm slightly suspicious that the radiator isn't big enough for that engine.
19:30I agree.
19:31Because the battery wasn't charging, it's only 11 volts, the fan will run slow.
19:34Oh, okay.
19:35When it's a 13.5 volts or 14 volts, it should run fast.
19:38Okay.
19:39So look, that could be it.
19:40Yeah.
19:41You've got to listen to the eel when he's saying something like that.
19:42Oh, I trust him.
19:43Yeah.
19:44Okay.
19:45Yeah.
19:46Okay.
19:47Okay.
19:48they're ready to check the alternator output.
19:54OK, yeah, we've got 13.3 then. Give it a rep.
19:5813.4. 13.5.
20:02Yeah, 13.5. Perfect.
20:05Yep. Cool.
20:07That's the result, isn't it? Yeah. OK, that's good.
20:12That's our engine not leaking, our cooling system not leaking,
20:15the charging system working,
20:18and then all we need to do is address that little bit of rubbing.
20:21And also, the gear lever.
20:24Oh, yeah, of course.
20:25It's in park when it's not and not in park when it should be.
20:27It has nearly had me a couple of times.
20:30In a parallel world, there is no more fuzz.
20:34What do you mean there's no more fuzz?
20:35I'll be underneath a Humber.
20:38Now, you wait till AI turns up and a little robot that goes,
20:41where do you want this?
20:43Like that.
20:44And then I'll be the only person who's got a job.
20:47I think what Henry's suggesting is that he is irreplaceable,
20:51that AI could not possibly do what he does.
20:53He's probably painting deepfakes now.
20:56There'd be a deepfake copy of you already.
20:58Yeah, I reckon so.
20:59Why would someone do an AI image that does absolutely nothing?
21:02Well, I walked into that one, didn't I?
21:12Our Humber is a bigger challenge than we thought.
21:15We've still got the rear wheel to sort.
21:18The shift stick needs serious attention.
21:21And we haven't even started to tidy her up.
21:23If nothing else goes wrong,
21:26I want to take her to the track and see what she's made of.
21:30But it feels like we're still a long way off.
21:33We had a tricky day yesterday.
21:50There were problems with the electrics.
21:5311.8.
21:55Yeah, it's a bit low, isn't it?
21:56OK, it is a bit low.
21:56Definitely a bit low.
21:58And the radiator.
21:59Oh, Lord.
22:03And if they weren't bad enough...
22:06Watch out, it's all right.
22:07The car seemed to have a mind of its own.
22:12Today's the day when we get back on track.
22:16Starting with the wandering shift stick.
22:20First thing you need to do is remove this top knob.
22:23It comes under quite easily like this.
22:25Then there's loads of screws around the side here,
22:30which we can remove.
22:34Once all the screws are off,
22:35Alan removes the housing.
22:38First thing I've seen is two loose nuts.
22:40They're finger tight and all wobbly and wibbly.
22:42And that actually holds the mechanism together.
22:44So because they're not tight,
22:45the mechanism's flopping around from side to side.
22:47So what I need to do is get a spanner,
22:48tighten those up and see if it improves the situation.
22:51Yeah, that's really loose.
22:53There you go, that's tightening up nice now.
22:54Before the cover goes back,
22:59Alan checks the shifter.
23:02That's working really good now.
23:03You can lift it up and slide through the gears nicely.
23:05Look at that.
23:08It just shows you that sometimes
23:09there's what appears to be a really major issue,
23:11like gears won't select or move.
23:13Turns out to be just two loose nuts
23:14and a wobbly bit of plate.
23:16So now it's all good.
23:18So 1-0 to Team Alan.
23:20Next challenge, work out why the rear wheel is rubbing.
23:26It may be that the axle's out of line.
23:28It may be that the...
23:30Body's pushed in slightly.
23:31Yeah.
23:32It could be a number of things.
23:35Fuzz jacks up the car and takes off the wheel.
23:38All right.
23:42If we could get a bottle jack
23:45and push it out a little bit,
23:47just gently in a number of places,
23:51maybe it will bring it out enough
23:52without doing any damage.
23:54That's a good plan.
23:54We should do that.
23:57Bottle jacks are compact but powerful tools,
24:00perfect for jobs like this.
24:02Oh, yeah, it's coming out.
24:04Is it?
24:05Yeah.
24:06Is that moving?
24:06How much?
24:07It's coming out nicely, actually.
24:09How much further?
24:10Go on.
24:10A little bit more?
24:11Yeah, a bit more.
24:12A little bit more.
24:12A little bit more.
24:16Just giving it a little bit
24:18of hammering around here
24:20just to allow the steel
24:23to stretch a little bit.
24:27It's working.
24:28This looks like fun.
24:29I'd like to have a go.
24:30No, you're not being let loose
24:32with a hammer.
24:35Back on goes the wheel.
24:37Off comes the jack
24:38and I'm offered a starring role.
24:43Would you like to get in the car?
24:46We need your weight.
24:47Yeah.
24:47Henry, would you get in the back seat?
24:49Yeah, yeah.
24:50And have a little bounce up and down.
24:54Personally, I prefer Gravitas to weight
24:56but always glad to oblige.
24:59Any good?
25:00Yeah.
25:00That touches just a tiny little bit.
25:03Yeah, that's touching just a tiny little bit now.
25:06Let's tap it a bit more, then.
25:07Yeah, tap it a bit more.
25:11All right, so you're feeling positive about it.
25:13Yeah, okay.
25:13Your bouncing was absolutely invaluable.
25:16Oh, thank you so very much, mate.
25:17I've been practising.
25:18Well bounced.
25:19As a youngster, I practised quite a lot.
25:21Did you?
25:21Yeah.
25:22Nowadays, it's not so much, no.
25:24After a bit more banging and gripping,
25:28I resumed the position.
25:34Yeah.
25:35Sounds good.
25:37There's no noise.
25:38There's no chafing.
25:39Fantastic.
25:41Might just about miss.
25:42Have you really fixed it?
25:44Yep, that's cool.
25:45Oh, that's fantastic.
25:46So, with things starting to look up on the mechanical front,
25:53next day, we move on to the aesthetics, starting at the bottom.
25:57You need to get these bumpers off the car so they can be chromed,
26:02because they're really bad condition here.
26:03Yeah, yeah.
26:04They should come back in really lovely, shiny condition.
26:10In the past, we've gone down the traditional electroplating route,
26:14where everything gets soaked in fats of chemicals.
26:18But this time, we're going to try something new.
26:24Traditional chroming now is in a bit of a problem,
26:27where the chemicals, over the next couple of years,
26:30are going to be banned.
26:32So, this really is the future of chrome.
26:37The new process starts with the bumpers being taken
26:40into the shot-blasting booth,
26:42where all the old chrome and rust is stripped off.
26:47No, they look very good, Tony.
26:49You seem to go everywhere.
26:51Then they're taken to another booth,
26:53where they're airlined and warmed before powder coating.
26:58The idea is we want to preheat them first,
27:00so when the powder goes on,
27:02it melts and flows to get a nicer, smoother finish.
27:09After the first powder coat layer has gone on,
27:12any imperfections are filled and sanded.
27:17I'm working against the clock here,
27:18because the filler goes off very quickly when it's warm.
27:21And then, after a second coat of high-billed primer,
27:28Simon sprays on some rattle can black
27:30to double-check for any imperfections.
27:34So, the idea is we put the black down,
27:37and as we wrap it down, we can see what we've done,
27:39and we've seen what more we need to do.
27:44As ever, it's all about the prep.
27:46Before any shiny stuff goes on,
27:49Simon and his crew are painstaking in their attention to detail.
27:54What happens is, if it's not super smooth,
27:56it will show off in the final coat.
28:01Talking about painstaking,
28:02back at the shed, we've got our buckets out.
28:06OK, so look, we've got a plan with the Humber, right?
28:09And that is that the chrome's going to be coming back soon-ish.
28:13Yes.
28:13The wheels need to come off, don't they,
28:15because they were sending them away and getting polished.
28:17Yeah.
28:18But you and I, Skiddler, have got our work cut out,
28:21giving this a little bit of a wash.
28:23Getting rid of the algae.
28:29You can't beat soap and water for most car crud,
28:33but our Humber's exterior is as unusual as its engine.
28:36That is a barnacle.
28:39Yeah.
28:40I've never seen anything quite like it on a car.
28:44Where Terry stored it, God only knows.
28:47But to get it clean, we're going to need the big guns.
28:53Coming off with a jet wash.
28:57You have to be careful not to get so close you scratch it.
29:01But after 20 minutes of high-pressure H2O,
29:04most of the dirt is vanquished.
29:08I think that's looking good.
29:09It's beginning to look good.
29:10We got quite a lot of the barnacles off, actually,
29:13with the jet wash and a bit of rubbing.
29:14But I have to say, for a first cursory jet wash,
29:18it's looking really nice, man.
29:20There's no need to re-spray this.
29:24If you polish the wheels,
29:25we get the new chrome bumpers on,
29:27we clean out the inside and make it look lovely.
29:31And we know this thing flies.
29:33Hey, we could be in for a nice little Humber.
29:39Meanwhile, back at the Cromers,
29:41after two days of cleaning, priming and filling,
29:44they're almost ready to be blinged.
29:47It's a minor damage we've sorted out where the holes were.
29:51But it looks pretty smooth.
29:52It's looking very nice.
29:53I think these will silver really well.
29:55We've sprayed a clear coat on there,
29:57and the silver lays on top of the clear coat,
30:01and the silver reflects through it.
30:03So the nicer the clear coat,
30:06the better the mirror finish.
30:11For the final stage,
30:13the bumpers are taken into the spray booth,
30:15where, after yet another cleaning pass,
30:18on goes the shiny stuff.
30:23Though it's still referred to as chroming,
30:27in fact, he's spraying on a solution of silver nitrate,
30:30which leaves a very thin,
30:32highly reflective layer on the surface of the bumper.
30:35Once it's done,
30:36everything is taken into another booth
30:38and given a final transparent coat to toughen it up.
30:44What we do,
30:45we've got a special heavy-duty clear coat lacquer,
30:47which is UV anti-scut resistant.
30:50The only problem is it takes two days to dry.
30:52So we'll see you in two days for collection.
30:57But it's not just the bumpers that need bling.
31:02Our Humber's got snazzy Wolf Race alloys,
31:05but they've seen better days.
31:07All four have got to come off,
31:09so the car will need stilts.
31:11Now, we need some advice here.
31:15Yeah.
31:15You being the expert car man,
31:17we want to be able to jack it
31:18and then get an axle stand underneath
31:20and get the jack out
31:21and move on to another one.
31:23The axle stand goes on the axle.
31:26No.
31:27Not necessarily,
31:28because you've got independent suspension here,
31:30so you've got wishbones.
31:31So what you need to find
31:32is a good, solid point of strength.
31:36Just like the chroming process,
31:39this requires consummate teamwork.
31:42I operate the jack.
31:44This is the life.
31:46Fuzz positions the axle stands.
31:49Gently.
31:50Gently does it.
31:51And Guy removes the wheels.
31:57Always sounds like a monkey, Mr.
31:59Sounds like my wallet opening.
32:01Yeah.
32:01I wouldn't know.
32:03I know exactly.
32:0520 minutes later,
32:06all the wheels are off
32:07and ready to be sent out.
32:10I'm looking forward to seeing those wheels
32:12with new tyres and sparkling as well.
32:15So the wheels can go off, tyres off,
32:17wheels can be polished,
32:18new tyres on.
32:19Tidy it all up,
32:20give it a good polish,
32:21and then we can drive it
32:23like we steal it.
32:25Oh, yeah.
32:26We didn't though,
32:27nine and a half grand is not a steal.
32:28No.
32:31So still a few things left to do,
32:33but the Humber's almost there.
32:35Next week,
32:36we've booked a slot
32:37at Turwestern Airport
32:38to see just how fast we can drive it.
32:41Will we come back with smiles on our face?
32:44Or egg?
32:45We'll soon find out.
32:47Oh, my God.
32:50Three weeks ago,
32:59we found a souped-up Humber hawk
33:02in a shed in West Sussex.
33:05Nine and a half?
33:06Nine and a half.
33:07Good.
33:08Okay.
33:08Lovely.
33:08Thank you very much.
33:09Fantastic.
33:09We battered it.
33:14This looks like fun,
33:15aren't we?
33:16No, you're not being let loose
33:18with the hammer.
33:20We battered it.
33:22He's left the wire off
33:23and he alternated it to the battery.
33:24Oh, there we are.
33:25It's a simple job.
33:27And blinged it up,
33:28something rotten.
33:29Now everything's back at the shed
33:35and we've got to do a refit
33:37before we give it a run-out tomorrow.
33:41I've got to tell you, though, lads,
33:42don't they look lovely?
33:43They do, yeah.
33:44They look fantastic, yeah.
33:46And then the clone...
33:48Now, look, right,
33:50this is quite incredible.
33:51That is a spray.
33:53I know, it's great, isn't it?
33:57Without more ado,
33:59the pit crew gets to work.
34:01Silverstone,
34:01eat your heart out.
34:05It's quite incredible
34:07how wheels like that
34:08set off a motor.
34:09It looks lovely.
34:11You wait till the bumpers
34:12go on as well.
34:15Reattaching the bumpers
34:16is a little more complicated.
34:20We've got to go in parallel.
34:22But an hour later,
34:25it's all done.
34:28That car is quite stunning,
34:31I think.
34:32I think so, too.
34:33I think we've done a great job on it.
34:34It's like a miniature
34:34American classic, isn't it?
34:35Yeah, it is.
34:36It's kind of sort of a baby Buick.
34:38Yeah.
34:39But will our Humber hot rod
34:41drive as good as it looks?
34:43There's only one way to find out.
34:48Next morning,
34:49we hit the road.
34:50Our destination
34:52is Turwestern Airport,
34:54a former RAF base
34:56with a perfect runway
34:57for a speed test.
35:01Will you just behave yourself?
35:03Honestly,
35:03you're just getting carried away
35:04with the V8 motor.
35:06No, I'm not.
35:07You are.
35:07It just wants to be unleashed.
35:10I know.
35:10It wants to go.
35:10But when we pull up
35:15on the tarmac,
35:16the beast under the bonnet
35:18is overheating.
35:21Oh, yes.
35:22There we go.
35:23There we go.
35:23That looks...
35:24Well, it looks all right.
35:26What are you doing with that?
35:27You just...
35:28It's sucking.
35:32It's sucking.
35:33What do you mean it's sucking?
35:34The fan is sucking
35:36from the engine bay.
35:39We've had this problem before.
35:41Does that mean that
35:42the wire's around the wrong way?
35:44Yes, it does.
35:45So it's going to get hot
35:46because the faster we go,
35:49the more the fan
35:50tries to push
35:51against the air
35:52and so no air gets through
35:53so it doesn't cool.
35:55Shall we turn it off?
35:56Yes, we will now.
35:57Go on.
35:57You can do that, Henry.
36:03It's a serious issue
36:04but fortunately
36:06an easy fix.
36:08They swap the wires,
36:11reverse the polarity
36:12and make the fan
36:14suck in air
36:15rather than blow it out.
36:20Fuzz turns the key
36:22and repeats the tissue test.
36:25That's it!
36:26That's it.
36:27There we are.
36:28That'll work perfect now.
36:30Hey, shall we have
36:32a little rundown?
36:33Yeah.
36:33Shall we adorn crash helmets?
36:35I'll be no idea.
36:36Why not?
36:37And we'll just have
36:38a little rundown
36:38as a family outing
36:40before we get busy.
36:44So we're cleared
36:45for take-off.
36:46Let's see what this Hawk
36:47can do.
36:51Come on, boot it.
36:53Better!
36:54Oh, I'm afraid.
36:57That is good.
37:00You've got to remember
37:01the Hawk was the basic model
37:03of the Humber range
37:04known as a heavy,
37:05slightly sluggish
37:06family saloon.
37:08Not now.
37:14That's really nice.
37:15Yeah.
37:18So there's been
37:19a few puffs of smoke
37:20out the rear
37:21but otherwise
37:22everything's looking good.
37:23Well, shall we prepare
37:26for the race?
37:27Yes.
37:27We launch
37:28from the yellow
37:29lines there.
37:31Yes.
37:32We go down.
37:33Yes.
37:34Right?
37:34We turn round,
37:35we come back up.
37:37Yeah.
37:37And then we cross
37:38the yellow line,
37:39spin it,
37:40change driver
37:41and do it again
37:42and finish on the yellow line.
37:44Right, Al,
37:44do you want to go first
37:45or do you want me
37:46to go first?
37:46You go first.
37:50Ready?
37:51Three,
37:52two,
37:52one,
37:53go!
37:57That's pretty quick,
37:58isn't it?
37:59So Team A
38:00are underway.
38:02In front of them,
38:031,300 metres
38:04of black top.
38:08I hope this car's
38:09going to last.
38:10Yeah, I hope so too.
38:11A little puff of smoke
38:13out of the exhaust.
38:1575,
38:1778,
38:1884.
38:22Yeah, they're turning now.
38:23They're turning now.
38:28The brakes,
38:29I'm warning you,
38:30are rubbish.
38:31So not exactly
38:33a Daytona turn,
38:35but there's
38:35no stopping skid.
38:3890 miles an hour,
38:4194,
38:4295.
38:45The change of driver,
38:46however,
38:47is not quite so fast.
38:52Hurry up!
38:52You're racing now!
38:54Look at them go!
38:58With Alan at the wheel,
39:00who knows what's
39:00going to happen?
39:04Ow,
39:04steady, please.
39:05I'm frightened.
39:06You're pretty scary,
39:07aren't you?
39:07Yeah, yeah,
39:07mate,
39:08I'm not a good passenger.
39:09It's all right
39:09when I'm at the wheel.
39:10In the end,
39:11our resident speed freak
39:12plays it safe.
39:14He holds back
39:15on the first straight
39:16and even on the return leg
39:18keeps it steady.
39:21Here they come.
39:22Crossing the line
39:23and
39:24over.
39:27Well,
39:28what was the time?
39:30Four minutes,
39:31ten.
39:32Proper scary.
39:33Is it?
39:33It's scary as a passenger,
39:35isn't it, Al?
39:35It's like a boat
39:36and when the wind
39:36gets you,
39:37it blows you
39:37across the track.
39:38Oh, does it?
39:38I think you'll beat
39:39our time.
39:45You ready?
39:47Ready?
39:47Three,
39:48two,
39:49one,
39:50go!
39:51Oh,
39:52flyby.
39:55He's been with a shortcut
39:55across the corner,
39:56didn't he?
39:56Yeah, well,
39:57he's always cheating.
40:00I'm giving it!
40:00I don't know
40:01whether this is
40:01a good idea.
40:03But I think
40:04it's a very good idea
40:06I pin it
40:07on the up leg.
40:08But they're only
40:0930 seconds in.
40:11They're going to do
40:11this in two minutes.
40:14Oh!
40:17Oh,
40:18there we go!
40:19And hammer it
40:20on the return.
40:22See,
40:23I don't trust him
40:23coming round this corner.
40:24He has slowed down
40:25a bit.
40:27And unlike
40:28Alan and Skid,
40:29we take the changeover
40:30very seriously.
40:36He's on a mission,
40:47isn't he?
40:48He's on a absolute mission.
40:50Oh,
40:50my God!
40:52It really does feel
40:54like Fuzz wants
40:54to take off.
40:57Where's the end?
40:58Up there!
40:59Slow down!
40:59Hurry!
41:00No, no, no!
41:01Brake now!
41:01Brake now!
41:02Brake now!
41:02Brake now!
41:03The brakes are no good!
41:07Fuzz does the
41:08tightest turn possible.
41:10Oh!
41:11Oh!
41:11Oh!
41:12And then really
41:15puts his foot down.
41:19It's terrifying,
41:20you see?
41:21I don't like it!
41:22Brake!
41:23Brake!
41:23Brake!
41:23Brake!
41:23That's it!
41:31We're done!

41:44faster than us.

41:48of fun,
41:48wasn't it?
41:50It felt
41:50massively quick.
41:51It's got to have
41:52been a tonne
41:52around there.
41:53I would have
41:53thought so,
41:54yeah.
41:54Don't you think?
41:54On both of the
41:55runs.
41:55And in this
41:56old car,
41:57that felt
41:58very quick.
