00:00This time on Outback Truckers.
00:03This hill now is very steep.
00:05It's just absolutely wrecking the truck and the trailer and everything around it.
00:10A narrow free crust is just barely the width of the trailer.
00:14Shit!
00:15And bodocks.
00:18Edge of a desert.
00:20Got a fire up here.
00:21No way to turn around.
00:23The consequences are deadly.
00:26What the f*** happened is it?
00:27The hill guys decide they're shitting soon.
00:31We're near oversized.
00:32We've got to hope everyone else has switched on as well.
00:38He doesn't give a f***.
00:39He's coming in hot.
00:51What's it go, Woods?
00:55Yeah, I'll just pull up here.
00:57Yeah, we'll just do it like that.
00:59We'll get these knocked out quick.
01:01We're grabbing a crusher, a screen and a 36 tonne digger.
01:06Fair bit of money in all the gear.
01:08A little over $2 million, so we've just got to make sure we do the right thing and look after the customer's equipment.
01:1226-year-old Mason Parkeye and his team have a heavy haulage convoy of three trucks to load and prepare for the brutal roads of Cape York.
01:24Hey, Mason, that machine's 2-7.
01:26Yeah.
01:27Yeah, so we'll be three metres, so I should gun up out there.
01:29As team leader, Mason carries the weight of responsibility, including supervising team member and father, Colin.
01:39Hey, Dad.
01:40Second and third from the rear.
01:43Both down, yeah.
01:43I'm travelling with Mason, my second oldest son, and Woody.
01:48Mason's definitely in charge on this job.
01:50He's running the show for sure.
01:53I'm going to go back a little.
01:55Just back just a tiny bit.
01:56I'm not going to call myself an expert, but I've got pretty good knowledge of the roads up here and the correct way to drive them, so that's sort of why I've been given the job of leading the pack.
02:06Although Mason is in charge of this operation...
02:10It's about as good as it's going to go.
02:13Colin owns the company.
02:16We kicked off the business 20 years ago.
02:18Started off in towing, and then we just progressed from there.
02:21And the heavy haulage come into play just because of my sons, so we've just grown the business.
02:29Mason does anything on the dirt, and he does anything heavy haulage.
02:33It's horrible today.
02:35It's muggy.
02:36It's hot.
02:38Sweating.
02:38It's only 7 a.m.
02:41We've only really got a small window to get in and out of Weeper, mainly because of the weather.
02:46If it gets wet up here, they close roads.
02:48We've got about a three-day window max, I'm thinking.
02:53After loading the mining machinery, the team must race the oncoming wet season, crossing the rutted and corrugated dirt roads of Cape York before monsoon rain makes them impassable, delivering the multi-million dollar load to a business in Mosman.
03:10We're in quarrying, mainly quarrying and small-scale mining.
03:13Wet season, you know, can last up to six months, so we don't want that year stuck up there.
03:19It's definitely better to be home, be able to do the maintenance on it over the wet season, so it's ready to go for next drawer.
03:26Let's go back out.
03:28How many years are you blocking timbers?
03:31Do you want to go two or just one?
03:33No, just one would be right.
03:34Audit has been with us for going on seven years now.
03:37Just a bit low at the back, so built a bit of a ramp for it, easy to get up.
03:41It started just after me, and he sort of worked his way up.
03:46Play for them, okay, boy.
03:48They know what they're doing.
03:50Just got to try and help out as much as I can.
03:56That's as far forward as I can go.
03:59Mason's overheating at the moment, so we've got to try and be quick.
04:01It's all right, let's see if I f*** this or not.
04:10To cart the 100 tonnes of equipment, they're using three company trucks.
04:16Woody in a Kenworth K200 cabover.
04:20Colin in a Volvo cabover.
04:23And Mason in the bonneted pride of the fleet.
04:26This is my new C509.
04:31Just ticked over 20,000 k's.
04:33Love it.
04:34I don't even know where to start.
04:35She's a dream truck.
04:38Heavy spec, six-rod suspension, slipper front end.
04:42Planetary disc.
04:43Yeah, she's a big girl.
04:45It's a little bit too pretty to come up here,
04:46but it's spec the right way for it.
04:50As owner of the company,
04:52Colin had to sign the cheque for the $700,000 truck.
04:56Pretty surprising, actually.
04:58I never thought he'd say yes to letting us order one of these trucks.
05:01When pigs fly, there you go.
05:02That's why I've got the pig in the bonnet.
05:06I bought Mason this 509.
05:09Huge investment.
05:11We're mindful of that.
05:12We've got to look after our own equipment,
05:14but the customer's stuff's on the back as well
05:16and definitely don't want to be damaging the customer's equipment.
05:22Reputation is probably my major focus these days.
05:27We've got customers that we've had for 20 years.
05:33South Bend Mile Creek bypass by three.
05:36Just up ahead, I've got a bridge there,
05:38but it's only a 25-ton load limit.
05:40We're obviously a bit heavier than that,
05:41so we're going to have to take the bypass.
05:43It's a bypass, Cape York style.
05:48To avoid a rickety wooden bridge,
05:50Mason needs to lead the team down an alternative track,
05:54through the riverbed.
05:56I'll let you know when I've cleared it.
05:57I'll just get you to stay up sort of at this top corner.
06:00Yeah, cool.
06:02It's pretty rough, so I'll throw down in the second.
06:08Try and pick the right line.
06:11It's nice and narrow down in here.
06:13Don't want to be cleaning the machine up on any of these branches.
06:26Just pull up there and we'll get the dump truck in behind you.
06:29Keith's just gone setting up the truck and, yeah,
06:31getting ready for loading.
06:33Contracting company owner Liam O'Connor
06:36is under pressure to complete a heavy, high-stakes trucking job.
06:41A lot of the equipment that we deliver is expensive equipment.
06:44There's a lot of money involved in the delivery process alone,
06:47so, yeah, you have to be on your game.
06:49Trucking is, it's never easy.
06:51The trucks have to be rolling five to six days a week,
06:54at least, to make any money.
06:56The job is taking two 60-tonne articulated dump trucks.
07:02Brand-new trucks, over 1.2 million apiece,
07:05from dirt all the way to Telfer gold mine.
07:07It's a brutal journey of 1,715 kilometres to Marble Bar,
07:14Australia's hottest town,
07:16and then another 400 kilometres of rough dirt
07:19to deliver $2.4 million worth of dump trucks
07:23desperately needed at a mine in Telfer.
07:26We've got 400 kilometres of corrugated dirt road.
07:30We've got to make sure that we, yeah,
07:32stay on the road and get there.
07:34The client is waiting for these trucks
07:35for the past couple of weeks.
07:37It's important we can get on the road
07:38and get them delivered.
07:41Liam, where's the keys?
07:42Huh? Where's the keys?
07:43Oh, sorry, yeah.
07:44Here under the bunk.
07:46With millions of dollars on the line,
07:49Liam's gambling on an all-island team,
07:52putting newly-arrived Irish compatriot Kate Flynn
07:55behind the wheel of the second truck.
07:58We've got one of our newest truck drivers, Sam, is Keat.
08:03This is going to be his first big load.
08:05Definitely a bit of a challenge for him.
08:07I didn't start off with a load as big as this,
08:09that's all I can say.
08:10A little bit nervous, yeah.
08:12It's a lot bigger than what I'm used to.
08:15You really have to be awake when they're doing this kind of stuff.
08:18Shit can go about very fast.
08:23We just checked the weights and the drives,
08:25so we're 22-tonne, we're about, yeah, 4-tonne overweight.
08:28Legally, you're only allowed 18-tonne on your drive axles,
08:32so we've got to try and transfer some weight backwards.
08:34Whoa!
08:36We're still 2-tonne over.
08:38We've got to come up with another plan,
08:40see what we can do just to get 2-tonne off the drives.
08:43What about if we pull the turntable forward?
08:44Adjusting the gooseneck hitch position on the $1 million trailer
08:52can vary the proportion of load weight on the truck's drive axles.
08:56And we're getting places.
09:00We've taken the turntable all the way forward.
09:01We've just gotten, yeah, down to our 18-tonnes, so, yeah.
09:04Get her packed up now, get her chained down, and we should be right.
09:07We need to be on the road by 9, yeah, so we're cutting it tight now.
09:10Our pilot has just arrived, so, yeah, we don't want to delay him.
09:18Cutting it a bit tight now, it's gone a bit after 9 with delays and stuff.
09:22OK, mate.
09:23The pilot's very important.
09:24Everyone needs to know what's happening.
09:30It's just catching the rain now.
09:32Uninvitable, unfortunately.
09:34It's Ireland every day, yeah.
09:37340 days of the year.
09:40Rain in the city is never good, because all you see is brake lights everywhere,
09:43so stuff starts to happen.
09:45You can brake as fast as you want, but it doesn't stop very fast with a lot of waste, yeah.
09:52Shit.
09:53Fucking piece of metal in the road.
09:55Hit the bottom of the truck.
09:57Dammit, airlines, tires, everything.
10:04Yes, we're supposed to die, yeah, yeah.
10:10Let's give the chains a bit of a bang, just make sure everything's seated in, because if
10:14you don't, it'll come loose going down the road.
10:18We've picked up some tippers we've ordered a while back.
10:22Cartage business owner and trucker, Rex Riles, has just laid down hundreds of thousands of
10:28dollars on new equipment.
10:31They're a roll press side tipper, very well designed, and we've taken them down to Laverton,
10:37and we're going to work out in the desert.
10:40The brand new trailers allow cargo to be dumped by tilting the trailer body to one side,
10:46perfect for unloading gravel and sand.
10:49They're another big investment for Rex and his business.
10:52Oh, look, they're $120,000, $145,000, $150,000.
10:58Rex has always got his custom stuff, which is great.
11:00I get off on nice gear.
11:04It's not just the shiny custom-built trailers that turn Rex on.
11:10He's brought one of his favourite trucks to haul them home.
11:13The Marmon, it was built in Galen, Texas, in 1995, and then they picked it up in 1997.
11:23The ultra-rare Marmon truck is one of only 22 brought to Australia, and just 20 are still
11:30actively working.
11:31It's on its third motor, a 550-horsepower, 15-litre, six-cylinder diesel.
11:38Been in the desert, doing a lot of work.
11:39It's been a good, old, honest, old truck, and, yeah, I'm quite fond of it, actually.
11:47Thanks very much.
11:48Thank you for your support.
11:49No problem.
11:49See you, mate.
11:53It's going to be a lot of challenges, rough roads, problems with tyres and bearings.
11:59From the trailer manufacturers in Darwin, Rex has almost 2,000 kilometres ahead of him,
12:07via Alice Springs and Uluru, before hitting the rough dirt of the Great Central Road for
12:13over 1,000 kilometres, to reach his hometown, the tiny community of Laverton, on the edge
12:20of the Great Victoria Desert.
12:21Rex's business, Desert Sands, is based there.
12:27Started Desert Sands in 89.
12:30Then I've just been doing whatever we need to do to keep the whole business going, so at
12:35the moment, cutting water, food and concrete.
12:39Mixed a couple of jobs have been sprung on me, so I'm going to try and work in for that.
12:42While Rex is under pressure to get back to Laverton and keep the dollars coming in for
12:47his business, he also has another equally important deadline.
12:53Trying to get back to the races that are on the Sunday, and we're going to make sure that
12:58the track's all right for it before the horses turn up.
13:01We're ready for the Shire of Laverton Springs.
13:04Held only once a year, the Laverton Horse Races is an event of massive importance to the local
13:12community.
13:13Rex has committed to preparing the track to make it safe for racing.
13:18Don't know as much as you can.
13:21We're going to try and make sure that the community's getting the support they need.
13:26I've got a few people who might know where I am and when I'm getting back.
13:30Imperative, I get back there on time.
13:34We're trying for three ways.
13:48That's where we want to be tonight.
13:51So we want to try and get in there in a reasonable hour.
13:53Still over 600 kilometres away, the three-ways roadhouse is Rex's first planned stop before
14:00continuing towards Alice Springs tomorrow.
14:04We'll make sure we've got plenty of fuel when we venture out.
14:08We'll be able to speak so we'll fill everything up and then head to the desert.
14:11We'll see how we go out there.
14:14What the f*** happened to you?
14:17Fuel gates decide to shit itself.
14:23Hopefully we've got enough fuel to get us through the three-ways.
14:25Try and pick the right line.
14:35It's nice and narrow down in here.
14:38Don't want to be cleaning the machine up on any of these branches.
14:42Let's start feeding it out.
14:52You're right to bring her out, Dad?
14:54Are they pulling out of there or just normal?
14:57It's a little bit of a pull out.
14:59You'll need a bit of momentum.
15:0026-year-old Mason Parkeye is responsible for guiding a convoy hauling over $2 million worth
15:08of mining equipment through remote Cape York.
15:11You won't need a click of locks and a running lock.
15:15I'm better safe than so.
15:16It's a massive contract for Mason's company, Colpac, owned by his father, Colin.
15:23We offer a service and our reputation is massive.
15:27I will pretty much do whatever it takes.
15:30If it means I've got to jump in a truck, that's what I'll do, 100%.
15:34Oh, what is taking a while? Is he OK?
15:40All clear, Russ.
15:42Well done, mate.
15:46All right, so that's done.
15:50Get back out on the road.
15:53I just hope this dirt isn't as bad as I've been told it is.
16:02F***ing sucks, doesn't it?
16:06I think the cows are even quicker than me.
16:11Now, we shouldn't be doing this, but we're going to do it anyway.
16:14We've got to sit on the table drink.
16:16It's too rough up on the road there,
16:19so we decided to drop down into the table drain
16:23because it's very smooth down there,
16:25but the issue we've got is maybe trying to get back out.
16:30Sitting on the table drains is a bit of a risky one.
16:32It's a bit softer, a bit more s*** sitting down in here.
16:35We've got about 36 tonnes sitting behind us now
16:38and more likely to catch some of the stuff
16:40that you don't want to drive on.
16:41The potential of rolling it or the load shifting,
16:46but it can save you a s***load of time.
16:51Sorry to do this to you guys.
16:53End of the road.
16:54We're just a moment.
16:57It's not worth sitting down in there.
16:59Do our time sitting on the rough stuff.
17:02Well, you've got to take that little wind, boys.
17:05It's a great moment.
17:06All right, we're on the bench, man.
17:15I'm still like a c*** behind you.
17:16All right, me and Dad will see you later on sometime.
17:19All right, I'll just head down there.
17:21Yeah, you're going to jump out.
17:31Oh, it's open, is it?
17:33Don't know.
17:34It looks like it, though.
17:37Just rolling to Archer River now.
17:38Going to pull up, have a shower and a feed.
17:41I've just got the thumbs up from Mason
17:42that the shower's open.
17:44Still running on time,
17:45maybe half an hour behind,
17:46but it's not too bad.
17:51Just sort of getting ready to start our day.
17:57We're on the...
17:58You'd call it the final leg, wouldn't you?
18:00Yeah, last stretch.
18:02I mean, a little day tomorrow morning unload.
18:07Just out into the bitumen now.
18:09I'll be out in front,
18:10so I'll just sort of give Woody a heads up.
18:11If there's anything coming.
18:14It's not really one of these prizes.
18:15Oh, it's f***ing pissing down.
18:25F***ing well.
18:26I thought it was better down south.
18:28It's f***ing...
18:29It's got that little one singing right now.
18:34Ah.
18:36It's better to just lay down.
18:37This car's on the fix.
18:38Yeah, no, I'm just sitting on 70.
18:40I can't see.
18:40Hard to roll.
18:41The car probably should have had a geezer
18:45once it was in front of it.
18:46Of course, you went for an overtake.
18:49I'm going to be worried about them
18:50jamming on the brakes at any second now.
18:59Shit.
19:00Piece of metal in the road.
19:01Hit the bottom of the truck.
19:03That thing gets wound up in something.
19:05Pull off aerolines, cables, yacht tyre.
19:08You can just do unnatural amount of damage
19:10real quick.
19:12I'm going to put up and check the load.
19:16Less than two hours into a three-day journey,
19:19delivering over $2 million worth of dump trucks
19:22into the Pilbara,
19:23Liam O'Connor faces the possibility
19:25of serious damage
19:27to his seriously expensive trailer.
19:30You're looking at, yeah,
19:31hundreds and thousands very quickly
19:33on any kind of a breakdown
19:34with these trucks and trailers.
19:38Everything looks in order, yeah?
19:40All is good.
19:41Taking Keith with us,
19:45one of our newest truckies,
19:48first big load for him.
19:50I've only had the license a couple of months,
19:52so this is the first time out in the road
19:53with a big truck like this
19:55and a big load.
19:56It sounds like there's some kind of an accident up ahead.
20:06That's a serious shift.
20:08doesn't sound like anybody's hurt, so that's the good news.
20:20I know we're aiming to get to Magnet before sundown.
20:34We're cutting it tight.
20:35It's very important that we keep our schedule.
20:38It's still almost 500 kilometres
20:41to their first overnight stop at Mount Magnet.
20:44We have to be off the road by sundown
20:46in a reasonable parking area.
20:48We can only travel in the daylight hours
20:50with these oversized loads.
20:51Still a good two to three hours
21:00from our destination,
21:01but one small misjudgment,
21:04and, yeah, things get real messy real quick.
21:09Action all around.
21:10We've got some cats up ahead.
21:13They're not even doing anything.
21:22Shit.
21:27What the f*** happened here?
21:31Fuel guys, you saw the shot.
21:33I saw how fun.
21:36We've got a fuel guy's flying up.
21:38He's trying to find what's going on.
21:40Go on a truck bay down here
21:42and just have a bit of a walk around,
21:43check everything.
21:44Now we've hopefully got enough fuel
21:45to get us through the three ways.
21:47That's where we want to be tonight.
21:54That's hot.
21:57Check the fuel of the tank.
21:59Do it the old-fashioned way.
22:01You can see there's no shortage of fuel.
22:05It's quite a release.
22:06Do the marking so we can keep it on it.
22:12Go around the other side,
22:13do the same.
22:16Some of the reason wires come off
22:18might help putting the wire back.
22:21So one problem solved.
22:23Got plenty of fuel.
22:25And it was just the wires
22:27that come off the top
22:28of the gauge indicator.
22:31So we're all right.
22:34We're going to have to keep moving.
22:38On a mission to pull a triple trailer load
22:41through the harsh, arid centre of Australia,
22:44Rex's 30-year-old hand-built Marmon Prime mover
22:47is testing his trucking skills.
22:51It was down below zero before.
22:53Now it's up to just under half the tank.
22:55So we're back in business there.
22:56Rex's reputation in his hometown,
23:00Laverton, is on the line.
23:02He must complete over 3,000 kilometres
23:04through the brutally hot desert
23:06in just four days
23:08to get back in time
23:09for an important commitment.
23:12Because we've got racehorses running around down there.
23:15So we just want to make sure
23:16that they're running on good ground.
23:19Relationships with the community
23:20I regard very seriously.
23:22I believe investing in the town
23:25to help build your town
23:26and get everybody on board.
23:32It was about 40 out there, I suppose.
23:35This time for the year is always challenging
23:37because the wheel bearings run hotter,
23:40the truck runs hotter,
23:41the diffs run hotter.
23:42It's a risk of breakdowns.
23:46It's run a little bit warm.
23:48So, yeah, sort of factored off a bit.
23:58Got that jump up.
24:00Yeah, we've got a bit of heat in the diffs.
24:02The diff, or differential,
24:05redirects the truck's power
24:06from the engine to the wheels.
24:09Replacing a diff can take days
24:11and cost thousands of dollars.
24:14Yeah, it's supposed to be about 80, 85,
24:16but it's a bit of hot.
24:20And what happens is
24:21if the diff heats up,
24:22it gets too hot,
24:23they could fail.
24:24That was a straight cow
24:40doing a runner across the road
24:42in front of us.
24:44Close enough on you.
24:45You'll have to be watching him.
24:48Irishman Liam O'Connor
24:50is feeling the outback heat.
24:52He has less than an hour
24:53to get to his first overnight stop
24:56at Mount Magnet
24:57or risk missing
24:58his critical delivery deadline.
25:01These trucks are
25:02north of one million each.
25:05It's been some bit of kit.
25:07Operators are on site waiting,
25:08costing the client money,
25:10and, yeah,
25:10we're losing money
25:11when they're sitting on a trailer as well.
25:12So, yeah, there's a bit of pressure
25:13to get these trucks delivered.
25:15Just here on time
25:18was a late start,
25:20so it's not a bad finish to a day.
25:23Have a bit to ease
25:23and maybe a few Guinness.
25:31It's going to start getting hotter
25:32as we move up along,
25:33so, yeah,
25:34we'll be heading on for Marble Bar.
25:36More than 900 kilometres further north,
25:40Marble Bar is Australia's hottest town
25:43where temperatures have been known
25:45to exceed 50 degrees.
25:48It's a long way
25:49from the green, green grass
25:51of Liam's home.
25:53Left Ireland in February 2012
25:55and came here
25:56and set up my own company.
25:58Knocked on a lot of doors.
26:01Yeah, it's just been a constant battle, I guess.
26:03I'll drive the trucks
26:05because I enjoy it.
26:06It's something new to me,
26:08something I wouldn't have done
26:08back home.
26:22We'll be travelling
26:23through the edge
26:24of Karajini National Park.
26:26It's a pretty impressive sight.
26:28As we come to the top
26:30of the steep declines,
26:31we would have to get our gear
26:33selected
26:33and take it all the way down.
26:38Fifth should be arky, I reckon.
26:40It's going to be definitely
26:43a bit of a challenge for a teat.
26:46A little bit nervous.
26:47These trucks are about 45 tonnes
26:49and empty,
26:49so there'll be a lot of weight
26:50to push on us down hill.
26:52The main thing is
26:53watching tyres blow out.
26:55Halfway down, so yeah,
27:10we're over the worst of it.
27:15Just got through the
27:16Karajini National Park.
27:18It's a lovely place
27:18to drive through.
27:19getting close now
27:23to the dirt road
27:24to Marlborough Bar.
27:26We'll be slowing
27:27her right down.
27:29And we better start
27:30pulling her back now, Keith.
27:31It's about to get fun.
27:32Yeah, I'll be there.
27:33Just absolutely wrecking the truck
27:47and the trailer
27:48and everything around it.
27:50It's pretty different
27:59to what flies at home
28:00we'll be dealing with.
28:01You wouldn't see
28:02in many roads like this.
28:04This kind of road
28:05just knocks the ears
28:06out of the truck
28:06and the trailer
28:07and myself.
28:11Try and find any
28:12smooth path
28:12as we can
28:13to minimise the corrugation
28:15and the bouncing
28:16and the banging.
28:17otherwise things
28:20are just going
28:21to fall apart.
28:24Worst than I expected.
28:29We're just coming
28:30into a narrow
28:31pre-crossing here
28:33now
28:33and it's just barely
28:34the width of the trailer.
28:36No room for slipping
28:37off here.
28:47If the trailer
28:47was any wider
28:48we wouldn't have
28:49got through.
28:50We've got a tight one
28:50here now, Keith.
28:52Yeah, I got it.
28:54I'm even nervous.
29:02That's it.
29:03I'm done.
29:05Got a bit of a hill
29:06here, alright.
29:08Shit can go wrong
29:09here with me
29:09because this hill
29:10now is very steep
29:11so yeah,
29:12loose ground
29:13can turn messy
29:14very quick.
29:17Shit, man.
29:24Bollocks
29:25are spinning
29:26on the hill
29:26struggling
29:28to get traction.
29:35I knew this car
29:36would overtake
29:37and I'll do that
29:37quick.
29:39You've just got to
29:40always be prepared
29:41for a car driver
29:42or a polytrak driver
29:43to just do
29:44the dumbest thing
29:44ever.
29:47I'm just glad
29:48that they've all
29:48got their lights
29:49on for once.
29:55That was
29:56bloody short
29:57lived.
29:58That was a bit
29:58of a funny one.
30:00A solid rain
30:01for about five
30:01minutes.
30:02Now absolutely
30:03nothing.
30:04Mason Parkai
30:06and his team
30:06are on their
30:07second day
30:08hauling over
30:09two million
30:09dollars worth
30:10of oversized
30:11mining equipment
30:12out of the
30:13remote Cape York
30:14outback.
30:15We've just got
30:16a few hours
30:17up the road
30:17and we're
30:18sort of
30:18back to
30:19civilisation.
30:21It's got a cow
30:22like just over
30:23our left
30:23fob line,
30:24don't it?
30:25Stay there,
30:25stay.
30:26What are you
30:27going to do
30:28bud?
30:36Just couldn't
30:37figure out
30:37what it wanted
30:38to do there
30:38for a second.
30:39That's a shiny
30:40truck it's thinking.
30:42Might be
30:42I'm checking out
30:43the pig on the
30:43bonnet.
30:43Trusted with
30:46leading the
30:46convoy,
30:47Mason is also
30:48responsible for
30:49a sparkling
30:50new $700,000
30:52company truck.
30:54This is my
30:55dream truck.
30:56Nice clean
30:57floor mats,
30:57just a towel
30:58on the floor,
30:59that's an
30:59operator.
31:00We don't
31:01have dirty
31:01floors.
31:03Super pride and
31:03joy, you've got
31:03to look after it.
31:05It's a bit
31:05embarrassing.
31:06Every now and
31:07then I get
31:07caught out for
31:07just staring at
31:08it.
31:09I mean you
31:09can't blame me,
31:10look at the
31:10thing, pretty
31:11beautiful.
31:13We're parked
31:18that night,
31:19going to have
31:20a couple of
31:20beers, going to
31:21kick the barbie
31:22in the guts.
31:23Some jobs are
31:24better than
31:24others aren't
31:24they?
31:25You want to
31:25chuck these
31:26steak on Woody?
31:28Oh look at
31:28that, this is
31:30living.
31:31Tough gig.
31:42This got going
31:43from our car
31:43line, we've
31:45got a bloke
31:45meeting us
31:46down there
31:46at the
31:46range, he's
31:47going to
31:47give us
31:47an escort
31:48down.
31:49Ahead, a
31:50narrow mountain
31:51pass, winding
31:52its way down
31:53along the
31:54edge of
31:54Australia's
31:55largest
31:55rainforest, the
31:57Daintree.
31:58Fog like
31:58this, this
31:59time of day,
31:59it's not
32:00ideal, especially
32:01when you're
32:01over-sized.
32:03Just at
32:03Robbie now,
32:03did?
32:04Yep.
32:05Just caught
32:06up with Robbie
32:07at the top
32:07of the hill
32:08here, he's
32:08going to get
32:09out and
32:09about in
32:09front of
32:09us.
32:11He's
32:11going to
32:11want us
32:12down the
32:12range.
32:16When you're
32:17doing
32:17oversize
32:17like this,
32:18it's not
32:19really
32:19something that
32:19I'll tackle
32:20without a
32:20pilot.
32:22Should always
32:23be careful
32:24on hills
32:25like this.
32:27There's no
32:27safety rams
32:28up here.
32:29If you pick
32:29the wrong
32:30gear on this
32:30hill, you're
32:31going straight
32:32down the
32:32side of that
32:33cliff.
32:34When you're
32:35oversized,
32:35just got to
32:36give everybody
32:36else as much
32:37room as
32:37possible and
32:38then I hope
32:39everyone else
32:40has switched
32:40on as well.
32:43He doesn't give a
32:49f**k.
32:50He's coming in
32:51hot.
32:51That jumped up.
32:58Yeah, we've got a
32:59bit of heat in
32:59the diffs.
33:01It's supposed to
33:01be about 80, 85
33:02but it's hotter
33:03than what they
33:04should be.
33:06What happens is
33:07the diffs, he
33:08heats up and
33:09he gets too
33:09hot.
33:10They could fail.
33:11If that happens,
33:12we're in a spot of
33:13bother.
33:13Just back that
33:20off to about
33:201,500 revs and
33:22we've got a bit
33:22of a downhill
33:23coast.
33:27Temperatures
33:28drop back.
33:30So it's back
33:31where it should
33:31be, so happy
33:33days.
33:35Rex Riles is
33:36pushing his
33:37rare 30-year-old
33:38Marmon truck to
33:40its limit, hauling
33:41his brand-new
33:42$150,000 bespoke
33:45trailers in a
33:46desperate race to
33:47get back home, in
33:48time to fulfil a
33:50commitment to his
33:51hometown community.
33:53I've got to get
33:53back for the
33:54racetrack and make
33:55sure that's up to
33:56optimum conditions.
33:57We've got, of
33:58course, it's
33:58coming from
33:59everywhere.
34:00A little bit
34:01behind but we'll
34:02just keep
34:02blotting along and
34:03hopefully we don't
34:04have any other
34:05issues down the
34:06road here.
34:08What have they
34:09got going here?
34:10What's the story?
34:12It's going to turn
34:15green shortly, I'm
34:16hoping.
34:21It might be here
34:22for a while.
34:27Not doing our
34:28schedule any
34:28favours, that's
34:29for sure.
34:32Oh, the
34:32MacBook.
34:34Oh, come on.
34:36It's a
34:36breaking.
34:39Unbelievable.
34:39You copy on the
34:45order, team?
34:46Is it a right to
34:47follow you through?
34:49Oh, ****, I'll be
34:51sitting here with
34:51that.
34:59Oh, thank goodness
34:59for that.
35:15Oh, for ****'s sake.
35:18We've got a
35:19mob of cattle
35:20standing on the
35:21causeway, the
35:22approach to the
35:23bridge.
35:24He's got to watch
35:25them.
35:25If they get
35:26spooked, they'll
35:27just bolt across
35:29the road.
35:30Next minute, you're
35:31dealing with a lot
35:32of targets, and
35:33that's the last
35:34thing you want to
35:34be looking at.
35:36And so if it's
35:37best, really, to
35:37turn up, upset
35:38them.
35:41****, you
35:42cheap **** are
35:42dead.
35:49We're spinning
35:49on the hill,
35:51struggling to get
35:51traction.
35:57Yeah, that was
36:17tidy going.
36:18Had to approach the
36:19hill slow because of
36:20the weight.
36:22If it was any steeper,
36:23we'd be probably
36:23having to go back and
36:24start again.
36:25just back in the
36:36bitumen.
36:37It's excellent.
36:42Here we are,
36:43Marvord Bower.
36:44One of the hottest
36:45places in Australia.
36:46Mission accomplished
36:47for today.
36:48The flies.
36:56The flies.
37:03The flies are
37:04like men.
37:09Turned off the main
37:10road, now onto the
37:11mine road.
37:12200k of dirt from
37:13here to the mine.
37:15It's not over yet.
37:16Anything can happen.
37:18It's just getting as
37:23rough as guts now.
37:24Just as I expected,
37:25it wasn't going to be
37:26sweet all the way.
37:28115k to go, yeah,
37:30we're down to 5k now.
37:33Bit of pressure to get
37:34these trucks delivered.
37:36Operators are on
37:36sideway.
37:38This rail will probably
37:39reach mine around
37:40midnight maybe.
37:41maintenance crew doing a bit
37:50of grading, so, yeah.
37:51Just got to get into his
37:52track now and we'll be
37:53going a bit better.
37:56Getting speed back up
37:57again.
37:58Just arrived now at the
38:12gatehouse.
38:13About an hour ahead of
38:13schedule.
38:15Get unloaded and turn
38:17around and get out of here.
38:18No major breakdowns or
38:24mishaps, so, yeah, it's
38:26a successful trip.
38:28Loads in one piece.
38:30Trucks in one piece.
38:31Pretty happy with how it is.
38:33Top job keys, yeah.
38:34We'll go and get these
38:35yorks unloaded and get out of
38:36here.
38:37A few different jobs up in the
38:38air.
38:39We'll get back and see what's
38:40most urgent and get back into
38:42it.
38:42Shit.
38:50Itchy fucking dead.
38:56It's had a cow on the side
38:57of the road.
38:58He had his head down,
38:59grazing, so, you just got to
39:01watch him.
39:03They'll write your bull bar
39:04off, they'll smash your grill,
39:05they'll take out your
39:06radiator.
39:07That's if you get off light.
39:12We're on the road for 12
39:13hours and, yeah, I'll be
39:14looking forward to the
39:15thought up down here at
39:16three ways.
39:17And, uh, first light, attack
39:18it again.
39:19The sun sets.
39:20It's just one of the, um,
39:21components that, uh, make
39:22it worthwhile living out
39:23here.
39:24Vast spaces to the outback
39:25drive for miles.
39:27Some days you don't even see
39:28anyone.
39:29It's a pretty special
39:30environment which I spent most
39:31of my life enjoying.
39:32most of my life enjoying.
39:33It's a pretty special
39:34environment which I spent most
39:35of my life enjoying.
39:39I'm just heading into Alice
39:40Springs and, um, grabbed a bit of
39:41fuel.
39:42Uh, for my life, it's a pretty
39:43special environment which I
39:44spent most of my life enjoying.
39:46I'm just heading into Alice
39:47Springs and, um, grabbed a bit of
39:48fuel.
39:49Uh, from there we get a bit of
39:50tucker and then wander out the
39:51curtain of springs.
39:53I'm just heading into Alice
39:54Springs and, um, grabbed a bit of
40:06fuel.
40:07Uh, from there we get a bit of
40:10tucker and then wander out the
40:12curtain of springs.
40:14We still watch the heat but, um,
40:17the hype and things will start
40:18cooling down a bit.
40:21Ah, shit.
40:24We've got a fire up here.
40:26There's got a bit of ferocity to
40:28it.
40:29It's not that far off the road
40:31really.
40:32You don't want to be, end up on a
40:35fire and then you've got nowhere
40:36to turn around.
40:37You're stuck there.
40:39The consequences are deadly.
40:42It's not that far off the road,
40:43it's not the way, end up.
40:48Oh, you want this.
40:49You're coming up, mate?
40:54He doesn't give a.
40:55He's coming in, hon.
40:57Truck coming, Woody.
41:03Driving his new $700,000 company truck,
41:0826-year-old Mason Parkai is leading a convoy
41:12loaded with over $2 million worth of oversized mining equipment
41:16down a dangerously steep mountain road.
41:20What speed are you doing, Woody?
41:23I just bumped it back to about 17.
41:27I felt like 27.
41:29We haven't been down here before, mate.
41:32Lucky we got Robbie, eh?
41:35Yeah, I'm taking up both lanes.
41:40It's just one of those roads, like, ideally you want to use it all,
41:43but you can't always.
41:45We're not the only ones out here.
41:49Just got to watch out for cars.
41:57You've got to hate condensation.
41:59Everything just gets flippery.
