How often do Londoners see fare evasion happen in real time?
Transcript
00:00City Hall Conservatives have claimed that fare evasion on transport for London services across the capital could be reduced through taller ticket barriers, dedicated fare evasion teams in stations and the creation of a specialist task force.
00:18Now, figures obtained by the BBC indicated that prosecutions for fare evasion on the Tube had reached their highest level in six years, from 23 to 24.
00:31The Conservative Transport spokesman Thomas Turrell said the Mayor of London was accused of merely paying lip service to the issue, despite what he described as widespread public concern about safety and rule breaking on London's transport network.
00:51Transport for London stated that its data-driven strategy was already having an effect and noting that TFL fare evasion rate had fallen to 3.5% from 3.8% the previous year.
01:05Now, in May of this year, it was reported that the Shadow Justice Secretary, Robert Jenrick, had posted a social media video showing him approaching people who had not paid their fare.
01:18Yeah, that went viral. You may have seen that on social media. So when it comes to enforcement on the underground, do Londoners see enough workers? And how often do they actually see people bursting through the barriers?
01:32I'm not aware of enforcement workers. I'm not aware of a presence. Certainly not on the Tube. Maybe when you come off, when you are near the exit, but no, not on the platforms. Not at all, actually.
01:50No, I don't think I've seen a lot. I've seen them trying to stop people or question their tickets, but I've never seen anybody trying to push through, I'm afraid.
01:59I don't think there's enough action. I don't think there's enough presence. When you do tend to see them, they tend to be in clusters. There's a number of them together.
02:11But then you'll go long spells without seeing anyone at all.
02:14Yeah, I don't see that happen very often, but when I have seen it happen, they get away with it. Yeah.
02:22Do you think more should be done for people? Do you think it should be strict? Do you think there should be more people? Do you think there should be more abortion than stopping people doing it?
02:31I guess. I guess. As I said, I don't see it that often, but I think there is a general sense that if you want to do that, you're probably going to get away with it. I think people are nervous.
02:39I don't really know. There should be something like a £200 on-the-spot fine, which I think would prevent people from taking the risk and doing it.
02:48People are quite blatant. They do it in broad daylight, in the middle of the day, in busy periods, and they'll just rush through.
02:55Sometimes, even with staff there, and the staff don't want to challenge them.
02:59You know, we're the staff there in mental health.
03:21You know, people get the wall and nada going on.
