Is London really a clean city?
Transcript
00:14A lorry was filmed illegally dumping piles of household waste, glass, wood and rubble on
00:21Stevenson Street in Ealing. A resident managed to video a lorry illegally dumping piles of
00:28household waste on Wednesday morning in Ealing, East London, before the culprit drove off at
00:34speed when they realised they were being filmed. The incident occurred as figures from the government
00:40showed the number of fly-tipping incidents councils are having to deal with across England
00:45climbed by 9% in 2425 to 1.26 million cases. Across London, there were over 480,000 incidents
00:56of illegal rubbish dumping over the 12 months at the equivalent to 1,318 cases a day.
01:05So when it comes to fly-tipping in the capital, is it getting worse and are London streets
01:09really that clean?
01:11I don't necessarily think it's like the dirtiest city in England, but I would say like there is some
01:16trash. I think fly-tipping isn't the biggest issue, it's more the lack of bins on the streets and the
01:22lack of like, I don't know, education to how to use the bins? Because they are kind of confusing,
01:26a lot of people just throw them all in one area.
01:29Yeah, I'm living in the East of London, in the Royal Victoria, and it's very, very dirty, rubbish,
01:38rubbish, and also there's very much dust about the fly. All the time, can I open my window?
01:48I leave it around 10 minutes after, can I close? I see a lot of dust.
01:53Mostly just, again, like I feel like lack of education with a lot of people and also,
01:58yeah, I don't know if fines is necessary. If you're throwing out big things like fly-tipping and
02:02things, yeah, I think if you're throwing a mattress on the side of the street,
02:05yeah, a fine for that would be fair, I think.
02:08Yeah, you do see a lot of stuff dumped on the road regularly. I will say, you know,
02:14because I've been quite negative, just in London's defence, if you look at other European capitals,
02:19London actually is relatively clean in that respect, so I will give them credit for that.
02:25But again, if there's fly-tipping, then there's an issue. So to come back to focus on London,
02:31if there's fly-tipping, there's an issue, so something does need to be done.
02:33Not so much in London, but in some of the suburbs, yes. Bikes thrown down, the bikes that are stacked,
02:41thrown down, a lot of garbage all over the side streets, a lot of empty bottles, empty cans, straws.
02:51At the end of the day, it's all about increasing accessibility to where you can safely throw away rubbish.
