00:01The following program is a special presentation of Fox Sports Net.
00:08Atlantic City, New Jersey, a place that's known for its boardwalk, pretty well known for its casinos,
00:13and pretty well known for fighters who not only talk the talk, but walk the walk.
00:18Hello, everybody. I'm Barry Tompkins, and over the past 12 months, we've had an opportunity to see an awful lot
00:23of fighters
00:23in an awful lot of fights in an awful lot of weight divisions here on Fight Time on Fox.
00:28Over the next hour, we're going to have an opportunity to look back on a couple of fights that really
00:32did live up to the hype.
00:34One of them was in the heavyweight division. It took place down in Miami, Florida,
00:37between a couple of guys who have been there, done that, and hope to be there and do that all
00:42over again.
00:43Alex Stewart and a guy named Phil Jackson.
00:46But before we get to that fight, we thought we might look back on a fight in the junior welterweight
00:50division
00:51between a guy who falls into that category of work in progress.
00:55He comes from a boxing heritage. His name? Hector Camacho Jr.
01:00You know the name. Pretty soon, you'll know junior.
01:03As he says, it's junior time.
01:04And he got a very good test from a veteran fighter by the name of Fred Curiel.
01:09Let's join my partner, Rich Murata, right now as we look back on the best of Fight Time on Fox.
01:15Welcome to Atlantic City, where all sorts of swingers are making the scene.
01:20It's time for another action-packed edition of Fight Time on Fox.
01:25Hector Camacho Jr. is 17-0, but what else would you expect from the son of Macho Camacho?
01:31A word of caution.
01:33This chip off the old block.
01:35Ready to fly.
01:37Get ready for war on the Jersey Shore.
01:41Fight Time on Fox is next on Fox Sports Net.
02:04And we welcome you back to the Trump Casino and Marina.
02:07Marina Casino Hotel.
02:08And hotel, I'm going to get this right.
02:09It's all those things.
02:10It's a casino, it's a hotel, it's on a marina.
02:12You're close.
02:12Terrific.
02:13And we've got a great fight for you tonight, too, to start things off.
02:15You know the name Camacho, of course.
02:17Well, this is the son of Hector Camacho Jr., flashy kind of guy, just like Dad.
02:21Yeah, maybe not quite as flamboyant, but nonetheless, the kid has some skills.
02:25He moves a lot like Dad, looks a lot like him, and his outfits are often quite as flamboyant as
02:30the Macho Man.
02:32And I think we're going to see that again tonight, too.
02:33He gets Fred Curiel tonight in our first fight.
02:37This guy was an outstanding amateur.
02:38I think this is really going to be a good test for young Hector.
02:40Yeah, Curiel is a guy that definitely has some talent, Barry.
02:43There's no question about that.
02:44And he has come here to win this fight against Hector Camacho.
02:47In fact, that's exactly what he said to us when we managed to talk to him.
02:51Curiel was saying, well, Camacho's not a big test for him.
02:54I think I'm a big test for the other way around.
02:57Yeah, that's the way he felt about it.
02:58He really does give himself a legitimate chance to win the fight.
03:00And quite frankly, I do, too.
03:02It's going to be a very good test for Camacho to see where he is.
03:05And we're going to see where Hector Camacho is right now.
03:07And there he is.
03:08And this is the outfit of the night.
03:10A little something understated, I think, right?
03:13Well, he is being carried in on the shoulders of his adoring members of his entourage.
03:26I'm almost speechless here, Barry.
03:29That is a page out of the book of Macho Senior, isn't it?
03:40But I do think he's outdone himself in here by actually being carried into the ring.
03:45And he's hopeful, of course, that he won't be carried out, Barry.
03:48That's the one thing he's got to concern himself with.
03:50Meantime, Fred Curiel in that familiar position of what has become the challenger.
03:56And that is cool your heels while a champion makes an entrance.
04:00But this is a guy really who's been around the track.
04:03And I have an idea this will not be a distraction to him.
04:06Well, he's got his head on pretty straight, I think, Curiel.
04:10Well, the kid who comes out of the Dominican Republic, he's a very friendly kid.
04:14But as he said, he grew up kind of on the street of hard knocks and learned how to fight
04:20early in life
04:21and carried it right into the gymnasium.
04:23And he's a pretty good boxer-puncher type.
04:26And I expect him to give Camacho a pretty good go of it.
04:28I think he will, too.
04:29It's going to be interesting to see how Camacho fights when the show business ends and the fighting starts.
04:36As we take a look at the Budweiser tail of the tape.
04:41And you can see Camacho, not yet 20 years old.
04:44Curiel, just 23, even though he's four years a senior of Camacho.
04:48Just about the same height, just about the same weight.
04:50A bit of a reach advantage for Curiel.
04:53I doubt that that's really going to be a factor in this fight.
04:55He's going to catch, have to catch, Hector Camacho Jr.
04:58Here are the jersey rules.
04:59Ten-point must system will be in effect.
05:01The three-knockdown rule will not.
05:02There will not be a standing eight count.
05:05There cannot be saved by a bell in any round.
05:08Only the referee can stop the fight.
05:09And the head-butt rule, we go to the cards after three rounds.
05:14Right now, let's take you to the center of the ring.
05:15And Thomas Treiber.
05:17Thomas.
05:18From the Trump Marina in Atlantic City, New Jersey,
05:21America presents and the undisputed, undefeated King of Beers, Budweiser,
05:27proudly presents to you Fight Time on Fox.
05:30Let's get the action started.
05:32We have for you, first of all, ten rounds of boxing in the junior Walter Waite division.
05:37And when the bell rings, the referee in charge of the action will be Benji Hestivez.
05:44Introducing to you first, fighting to my left out of the red corner,
05:47he's wearing red trunks with blue trim and weighed in at 142 pounds.
05:52Coming to us from Patterson, New Jersey, he has a professional record of 14 wins,
05:57two losses, one draw, with five wins coming by way of knockout.
06:02Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Freddy Curiel.
06:08And his opponent fighting directly across from him out of the blue corner.
06:12Tonight, he's wearing silver trunks with blue trim and weighed in at 143 and three-quarter pounds.
06:18Hailing from San Juan, Puerto Rico, he is undefeated with 17 wins
06:23and 11 of them coming by way of knockout.
06:25Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Hector Macho Camacho Jr.
06:36Once again, your referee in charge, Benji Hestivez, now to give the instructions.
06:46Okay, man, again, first off, this is the borderline right here, okay?
06:50It's a little high, okay?
06:52Again, Chief second.
06:54It's got a big hard arm.
06:56Just bear my commands again, give me a nice clean one.
06:58Good luck to both of you.
07:01Well, a nice clean one could be the key words of this fight.
07:06The last time Fred Curiel was in a fight, it was anything but.
07:09Well, he fought a Turkish prospect by the name of Ciat Salmon,
07:12who was undefeated at the time in nine fights.
07:15And to say it was a dirty fight would be an understatement.
07:17In fact, Curiel found himself kicked and found himself at one point
07:21having his opponent jump on his back during the fight.
07:24Another time, pushed him down.
07:25It was quite a dirty fight.
07:26It ended up a draw, however, and you will see Curiel's a pretty good boxer puncher.
07:31He's going to go after Camacho and try to put pressure on him,
07:35but not get caught in the mistake of just following him around the ring
07:40right there in front of him, because that could be a real doom for him if that's the case.
07:44And Camacho can make you do that.
07:46That's a pretty good left hand by Camacho.
07:52I'll tell you, those trunks of Camachos are almost X-rated, Barry.
07:56They look like they weigh a ton.
07:59Try to keep our cameras away from the sideways views.
08:05Camacho doing anything but running early in this fight.
08:10Curiel caught him with a very good left that caused Camacho's face to redden a little bit
08:15on the right side of his face.
08:17Well, of course, anybody who has seen Hector Camacho Jr., you and I have.
08:21And remember the fight with Troy Crane when he had the fight very much in hand,
08:25and in 30 seconds from the end, Crane just hit him with a shot that dropped him,
08:29and had that fight have been any longer than 30 seconds from the end,
08:32it might have been over for Hector.
08:33It was an absolutely shocking moment to see Camacho go down in that fashion
08:38because he was really, really hurt, and his legs were gone at that point when he got up,
08:43and he was very wobbly.
08:45And if there had just been a minute left to go, Barry, he may not have been able to survive.
08:50So I think in the early career of Hector Camacho,
08:53a good straight left hand there by Camacho.
08:56In the early career of Camacho, this is going to be his sternest test.
09:02Did a nice job of spinning his opponent around there,
09:05worked him a little bit, got behind him, spun him around,
09:07and now Camacho's showing a pretty good job.
09:09Camacho not running here.
09:10There was some thought and curials amongst his brass that Camacho would be a runner,
09:15but he's not.
09:16You know, standing here and actually doing a pretty good job in this first round.
09:20Camacho doesn't fancy himself as a knockout artist.
09:23He's quick to say if they come, they come.
09:25They don't.
09:26I'm not going to worry about it.
09:27There's a good quick right hand from Curiel.
09:29So Camacho has just had a little punishment,
09:31but he's also taken a little in his first round.
09:38A little reddening over the right eye of Hector Camacho Jr. also,
09:43and it's in a spot that could eventually cause him a problem.
09:47Both these guys are very quick-handed.
09:49It would seem like this would be the type of fight
09:51where we might have a very high volume of punches.
09:54Lead right hand by Curiel.
10:02You talked about Curiel's attitude coming into this fight.
10:07He's a very confident fighter, just in a way.
10:10He said, you know, this is a test for Camacho.
10:12This is a test for me.
10:15And he said he would do whatever it took to win tonight, Barry.
10:18If it had to be dirty tactics, because we referred to that,
10:21he said I'll do whatever it takes to win.
10:23Hung in there pretty well, actually.
10:24Hector Camacho Jr., of course,
10:26people are talking a chip off the block of his father.
10:29Simple fact is, his father did not have a great influence on his life,
10:33but in terms of boxing skills,
10:34there's a lot to say between the two of these guys.
10:38Well, it's obvious pressure, yes, you know,
10:41because, of course, I'm the son.
10:43I'm Junior.
10:44I feel like I'm forced to become or perform better than he is
10:47when he has fought,
10:48because there's a lot of pressure.
10:50First, though, I'm Junior.
10:51Then again, people say, oh, how good is he?
10:53He's like his father, he won't be like his father,
10:54so there's a lot of pressure.
10:55But it's something I've learned to deal with in my career,
10:58and, you know, it doesn't bother me.
11:01And I think he really is rightfully proud of his father's accomplishments,
11:04but by the same token, Rich,
11:05I think he's very much his own guy, too.
11:07Yeah, I think in a lot of ways,
11:08he's a lot more sensible than his more famous father.
11:12He says he tries to understand his dad and his dad's lifestyle
11:15and just tried to kind of deal with it on that basis.
11:17Let's go, city, country, country.
11:29Here's the Silver Festival.
11:30Come on, man.
11:36Come on.
11:37Come on.
11:37Camacho is doing a very good job right now of counter punching,
11:41a real nice job,
11:42and he's making Curiel pay for it when he misses punches.
11:48Camacho it would appear has the edge in quickness they're both quick-handed but he's beating Curiel
11:52to the punch
12:08Curiel as I mentioned earlier from the Dominican Republic says he loves Sammy Sosa he said his
12:13whole family loves Sammy Sosa in fact they went to the parade honoring Sosa in New York
12:19yeah they live here in Patterson New Jersey now and that's just across the river of course from
12:23from the city of New York and they made the trip in he was born in the Dominican then came
12:30to
12:30Patterson New Jersey at the age of three said he began boxing just in the neighborhood they'd set
12:35up little tournaments right around their homes and then he said he was playing a little baseball
12:41playing a little bit of football and then he was going to go to a high school here in in
12:49Patterson New Jersey and Eastside High School Eastside thank you and he said when I knew I was
12:54going to Eastside High School I thought I better learn to fight
13:01interesting chess match here developing Barry as it evolves right now though the edge
13:06and quickness of the hands of Camacho was giving him the edge in this fight and to Camacho's credit
13:12he's standing there and fighting him he's not being cute there's a good quick left-hand lead
13:18Curiel has fought a couple of left-handers he did not think that Camacho would bother him
13:29one thing that Hector told us he was working on he was trying to become a better finisher trying to
13:33recognize when he's got his man hurt in the fight we spoke of earlier with Troy Crane you and I
13:38both
13:38thought that he had him hurt on four or five occasions in that fight never did jump on him
13:42right and I was a little perplexed that night because they were telling him in his corner
13:46just box him he had his man hurt and ready to go on a couple of occasions just box him
13:50don't go for
13:51the knockout let's get in the work well you know you've got if you have a man ready to go
13:56you've
13:56got to get him out of there otherwise you stand the risk of impending doom and it nearly happened
14:02to Camacho that night Hector being very effective here in this second round and it's not that Curiel
14:09is doing anything wrong it's just a simple fact that Hector Camacho Jr. so far is doing everything right
14:19round number three
14:21round number three Hector Camacho in the aluminum trunks and
14:24Fred Curiel in the red
14:29quick left hand
14:37down through the shows that we've had there I've tried to reiterate on several occasions that boxing
14:42really is a quickness sport I mean almost more so than any other sport I can think of it just
14:47really
14:48the guy who was quicker when they when you have two guys square off really has great opportunity to do
14:55damage and more damage to his opponent
14:57now even when you think of power punchers you can think of a guy like Mike Tyson part of his
15:01great success
15:02when he was coming up in the 80s and early 90s was due to the fact that he had such
15:06incredibly quick hands as well as his power
15:09people were enamored of his power but it was the way that he struck in such lightning like fashion that
15:14helped him
15:14and you always hear corners say be first be first I mean it's become a boxing adage and
15:19only a few guys can be
15:22we're looking at one here in Hector Camacho Jr.
15:24big right hand for Camacho and the mouthpiece of Curiel came out
15:33Camacho is not a guy who has one punch power
15:36but as we said he knows what he is and maybe more importantly he knows what he isn't
15:43well he knows he's not a knockout
15:44but he expects knockouts to come along the way
15:49and you know he could get one tonight because of the accumulation of punches that he's putting on Fred Curiel
15:55who's a talented boxer in his own right but is having difficulty dealing with that speed
16:00well Curiel walks right into that left hand of Camacho and the knees buckle
16:06this is way the best I've ever seen Hector Jr. look
16:09little holding there
16:11Benji Estevez tells him about it
16:14Curiel got a left hand and Camacho takes a step back
16:17that might have been an instance where Camacho thought Curiel was more hurt than he was
16:24and Camacho was very excited about this fight Barry's you know sparred with just great competition and getting ready
16:30Tracy Harris Patterson guys like Buddy McGirt Arturo Gotti down through the several months
16:36and really felt that he was going to come in here and show everybody tonight
16:40but he he is having a lot of trouble dealing with Camacho
16:44not only the speed but the counter punching ability
16:46I'm loving what Hector is doing tonight in terms of his counter punching
16:49because he's avoiding punches and then coming right back quickly with counters
16:52very impressive performance so far and you're right by far the most impressive that we've seen him
17:05I think Curiel really expected Camacho to kind of just run from him tonight and it hasn't worked out that
17:11way
17:16interesting that Curiel said you know he idolized Camacho's dad
17:19he said he's got autographed pictures of it from Macho Camacho
17:24there's a right hand from Curiel and that stood Camacho up in another right hand
17:32each has likely felt the other's best so far
17:43start the fourth round
17:45Curiel closed with a flourish in that third round
17:48but whether or not it was enough is questionable
17:52I think he certainly got the respect of a junior in that one
17:59we're at the Trump Marina Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City
18:02Barry Tompkins, Rich Morati, your low and obedient servants
18:05Freddie Curiel in the red trunks
18:07Hector Macho Camacho Jr.
18:10and the silver I guess we can call those silver
18:12the space agent
18:14yes
18:17Hector said he talked to his dad just a couple of days ago
18:21what I thought was interesting is that
18:22Hector Camacho Jr. says his dad did not teach him how to fight
18:26I said well not any of it
18:28he said he didn't teach him a thing about how to box
18:31he's picked it up on his own
18:33well you know what I really like about him
18:35and of course I have done a number of fights in seniors as well
18:39and got to know him fairly well too
18:41but without casting aspersions against senior
18:45Hector really has his head screwed on straight
18:47you know and I find him to be a very responsible guy
18:50and he's got a goal and he's got an intention
18:52and I wouldn't bet against him
18:55well he says every fight he's learning he's going to be patient
18:58feels he has a lot to prove
19:00because he has the name of Camacho
19:03and he's getting himself very prepared for every fight
19:06that left hand is very quick
19:13he was saying he wants to fight Julio Cesar Chavez
19:15he thinks that would be an excellent fight
19:18wants to revenge the loss of his father he said
19:25Curiel is picking up his pace here a little bit
19:29and trying to go a little more to the body of Camacho
19:32I think he realized he hurt him in the last round
19:35and now he's getting a little braver here
19:43that's a tough punch to throw right there
19:45a lead uppercut
19:52swelling under the right eye of Curiel
19:54I don't believe that will be much of a problem
19:56he's getting red and angry looking however
19:59and a little bit of a bruising up on the forehead as well
20:14Curiel's people say that he has to keep his punches straight
20:16as soon as he starts throwing looping punches
20:18he's got a problem
20:20that was low
20:20yeah he's trying to remember what we said about
20:22he'll do anything to win
20:23and I think he sensed that he was losing the fight
20:26and he has gone more to a mauling style
20:28and roughhouse style here Barry
20:32and he said I'll do that if I have to
20:34and obviously he feels like he has to
20:36again that left hand from Camacho
20:39and that's been his biggest weapon of the night
20:40we're coming back
20:44welcome back
20:44we come to round number five
20:46Freddy Curiel and Hector Camacho Jr.
20:49been an entertaining fight so far
20:50on your card Rich
20:51you've given one round of Curiel
20:53and the rest to Hector Jr.
20:56right actually the last round is the one that I gave to Curiel
20:58I thought he was carrying the round big time
21:00until he ran into that right hand
21:01right at the end of the round
21:02that right eye is starting to look fairly ugly
21:05on Curiel right now
21:06and it's not getting any better
21:10Curiel is showing a little more upper body movement here
21:12which is not a bad idea
21:13when you consider the sharp shooting accuracy
21:15of Hector Camacho
21:18and good body work by Curiel
21:20this started in the last round
21:23I think he felt that he was being countered
21:25very successfully by Camacho
21:27and he was missing punches to the head
21:29so why not throw a few to the body
21:31didn't miss that right hand to the head a moment ago
21:38I mean it should be said
21:40we talked about Hector Camacho Jr.
21:42getting knocked down by Troy Crane
21:43it was one of those one in a million punches
21:48that was a wild shot
21:49and probably Camacho basically
21:51because the fight was so near an end
21:52was just relaxed defensively
21:54he was so far ahead
21:55taking some chances
21:57he was on his back
22:14Curiel realized he better keep his hand up
22:16a little too late
22:21the left hand of Camacho is very quick
22:23yeah and if he can get there with leads
22:25like he just did
22:26that's going to spell the end for Curiel
22:28I think
22:31he's landed a couple of times
22:34without having to follow the jab
22:35just lead left hand
22:38throws it from a lot of angles too
22:40he doesn't always have it cocked when he throws it
22:42he'll throw it from the hip
22:51that welt is pushing up against the eye now
22:53Barry and beginning to close it from underneath a little
23:00and it's all in the area of course where the left hand has been landing
23:04and Camacho savvy enough to utilize that I would think
23:29so we come to the end of round number five
23:33and again Hector Camacho taking a little bit of target practice on a game
23:37Freddie Curiel but he's going to have to find something that hasn't been there
23:43here's what we've been talking about
23:44quickness of Camacho
23:45there's the left hand lead that we talked about
23:47look at how he avoids the punches
23:49and he's able again with the quickness to get the jab in
23:51before Curiel can even reset defensively
23:53now we're on number six
23:55and Curiel again Curiel's been game
23:57but he's just been outgunned
24:09doing some good work to the body
24:14Hector Camacho Jr. has managed to get himself a couple of ratings now
24:18rated 20th in the world
24:20in one of the organizations
24:21and in those North American ratings
24:24or whatever they are
24:25he's up around 11 and 15
24:29but what it basically means is that people are starting to take notice of it
24:33absolutely x2
24:51I found this thesechi comment about the weight he likes to fight at very
24:56curious, and since he's been fighting as a pro he fights
24:59normally around where he is now
25:02right hand landing there that you saw from
25:05Curiel
25:07Camacho said that he likes to
25:08punch around, likes to weigh really
25:10he feels he would be most effective fighting in the
25:12135 pound class
25:13and here he is tonight fighting in the Wallerweight division at 143
25:17he's telling us he walks around
25:18at 132, 133
25:20he said he really had to eat to come up to this weight
25:23said he feels
25:24strong at this weight but he feels quicker
25:26of course at 32, 33
25:36he's got the kind of body, he's got strong legs
25:38it looks like he could probably carry
25:40maybe even as much as 47
25:42he certainly doesn't look
25:46soft at all
25:49and I'll tell you he's very
25:50quick at 43
25:51I was just going to say he threw that left hand
25:53he was off balance sideways and still made it count
26:02and really starting to bust up Curiel in the process
26:17the thing that Hector Camacho says he's been doing the most in the gym
26:21is working on his patience, looking for real openings
26:24looking for how to counter punch
26:26and I think all of that gym work for him is paying off here
26:28because that's the things that we're seeing tonight out of him
26:30I do too, in fact
26:31I think that's one of the things that is the difference between
26:33he and his father
26:34is I think he's really a student of the game
26:36and he's told us many times
26:37he'll look at the tape of the fight
26:39and he'll say I didn't do that very well
26:41he'll get back in the gym
26:41he'll work on that one aspect
26:43whatever it might be
26:44try to get that resolved
26:45and then the next time, of course, there's something else
26:47Camacho in absolute control of this fight
26:49in the eye of Curiel
26:50not looking good at all
26:57now for Hector Camacho, of course
26:58we have now fought six
27:00and he's going ten
27:01so even at this point
27:02he's starting to get toward those uncharted waters
27:05not concerned, though
27:08well, I'm prepared for each fight
27:09like a championship
27:10my last fight
27:11like it's a world title fight
27:12I train to fight twelve rounds
27:14not ten
27:14so I'm training to fight all day
27:16mentally approaching a fight
27:18coming to box
27:18we're looking for the knockout
27:19when it comes
27:20it comes
27:20but we come here to train
27:22to fight ten rounds
27:24well, it appears that may be
27:26he's a likeable guy
27:31Hector Camacho Jr.
27:33I know his father
27:33kind of grates on the nerves
27:35of a lot of people
27:36a lot of times
27:37and can be abrasive
27:39but Junior here
27:40is a good kid
27:42that's what I say
27:43he's got his head
27:44screwed on pretty straight
27:45and everything is headed
27:49in the right direction
27:50for him
27:56and don't get us wrong
27:57he says he has a good relationship
27:59with his dad
28:00they talk all the time
28:01he says he's very happy
28:02with the relationship
28:02that he's got with his father
28:03right now
28:04he's got his two aunts
28:06one of whom was instrumental
28:07and is growing up
28:08here in the audience tonight
28:10said his mom
28:11can't stand to watch him fight
28:16he's got his hands up
28:28now curiel is faced with a real problem here
28:31because he's got to step up his pace
28:32he's got to let his hands go
28:33but the problem is
28:35letting his hands go
28:36with someone who's counter punching
28:37as effectively as camacho
28:38you run a real risk
28:40of being nailed
28:42camacho now
28:42for the first time tonight
28:43on his bike a little bit
28:44but even this is something
28:46of an art form
28:56curiel is right here
28:56curiel missed with that
28:57right hand
29:04curiel has kind of
29:05abandoned that body attack
29:06that was successful
29:07for him
29:07for a couple of rounds
29:08barry
29:09i think it would be wise
29:10for him to go back downstairs again.
29:12Tried to do it right there, and actually Camacho picked him.
29:23Don't have our punch profile numbers tonight,
29:26but I would suspect Camacho has a very high connection percentage tonight.
29:33Yeah, he's very sharp.
29:35Accuracy, very impressive.
29:39And he gets to impress a lot of people here tonight.
29:41There's a lot of media from around the country here tonight.
29:44This is a very big boxing weekend in Atlantic City.
29:47David Reed's fighting James Coker tomorrow night here in Atlantic City.
29:51Gabriel Ruelas is fighting John Brown.
29:54So a lot of people here early and taking in the fights tonight
29:56that will be there tomorrow night as well.
30:22I think what is very difficult for Curiel here, Barry, is the fact that, you know, judging from his hand
30:27speed, and he's quick-handed,
30:28that I would imagine that he probably has the edge in hand speed on almost everybody he fights.
30:34And he comes into a ring, and it's very unaccustomed to seeing himself outsped the way that he is here
30:41this evening.
30:45You can see how Curiel is getting banged up.
30:51Curiel coming forward, just grazing the head of Camacho, who's just quick enough to get away from that punch.
30:58Yeah, just caught a little bit of that right hand with his glove.
31:03So we come to round number eight, we're going ten.
31:05This is our first fight of the evening, our main event still to come.
31:16Trying to get a little chilly back here on the eastern seaboard.
31:19We got off the point of ice now and we're out in the 30s.
31:23Yeah, it's a good boxing win, that's right.
31:28George Allen used to save no matter what the weather.
31:30Great Redskins, right?
31:32That's right.
31:42Camacho now into that area where he has not fought before and into the eighth round.
31:48You know, I just don't think that matters in his case, Barry, because you see how relaxed he is in
31:53the ring,
31:53and he doesn't waste a lot of punches.
31:55You know, a lot of kids who don't have that experience, they may utilize up,
31:59they may use up all that energy before they get here.
32:02And I don't think that's the case at all with Camacho.
32:04I don't think it matters.
32:06I think what he said earlier about him going 12 is absolutely true.
32:09I think he could go 12 here tonight with no problem.
32:11Yeah, I mean, there's absolutely no fatigue showing at all.
32:13He has gone eight months before, that against Manuel de Leon, three fights back.
32:24And there's that quick left hand.
32:26That's been the biggest weapon for Camacho by far this evening.
32:31And Curiel just never even saw that coming.
32:34Curiel walked through it, though, Barry.
32:36I mean, he reacted to it very well.
32:38He gave a little nod of acknowledgment to Camacho and came back, but he ran into another shot.
32:44I like the idea that he throws the left hand for a lot of different angles.
32:47I don't think it's a punch that's going to get anybody out of there with one connection,
32:52but nonetheless, it's very effective.
32:55Curiel wants to get him to fight.
32:57Hector's showboating a little now.
33:03Curiel's only hope, really, is to get Camacho, I think, to exchange with him
33:07so he can land a big shot.
33:11I don't think Camacho will make that mistake again.
33:15That's right.
33:16He's been down that road before.
33:18Yes, he has.
33:29Curiel getting very frustrated here.
33:35He really ran in.
33:36That was a tremendous shot that Camacho landed earlier in the round.
33:40Best punch.
33:41And I just think that Curiel never even saw it, Barry.
33:44Just didn't even see it coming.
33:45It was so quick.
33:46Well, again, the thing that's impressive to me about how Camacho throws that punch
33:50is he doesn't give it the same look twice.
33:52You know, he'll bring it from shoulder level one time and from the hip the next.
33:57Curiel's still coming forward, though, still landing the occasional shot.
34:01And still swelled up under that right eye.
34:06And it's not getting any better.
34:07We're coming back.
34:16Best punch of the fight landed in round eight by Hector Camacho Jr.
34:19A beautiful straight left-hand lead thrown with extreme quickness.
34:23And even Curiel had to nod his acknowledgment to Camacho.
34:26Yeah, that was a good one.
34:29Round nine now.
34:30And Curiel just continues to get beat to the punch.
34:33And as you said earlier, there's no replacement for quickness.
34:38And the crowd really admiring Curiel's gameness and bravery and coming after Camacho and getting
34:44some good shots in at the end of that last round.
34:46Had a little chant of Freddie, Freddie going at the end of the round.
34:50And then it started the round here with it as well.
34:52Well, that's one of the things I think that impresses me as much about Camacho tonight
34:56is the simple fact that, I don't think there's any question, but that
34:59Freddie Curiel is the best opponent he's fought.
35:02And Camacho has stepped up to that level.
35:04Yes, he has, Barry.
35:06You know what often happens, though?
35:07A lot of times when you're a young guy who's fighting, you fight guys who really can't
35:11fight very well.
35:12They're kind of...
35:12Now Curiel ran to his best part and rock Camacho a little bit.
35:16And now he'll try to jump on him.
35:18Camacho holds on.
35:22He's going to take a point away.
35:26So whatever edge Curiel had is gone.
35:29Well, he can't win the fight in decision anyway.
35:31He's got to get Camacho out of there.
35:32But he gave Camacho a good chance to recover if, in fact, Camacho was hurt.
35:37And he got his attention, Barry.
35:41Now Camacho hits him.
35:44And he's going to lose a point.
35:46Now it's all even.
35:48Tit for tat.
35:52Same foul.
35:54So we'll start over.
35:59So this round will be scored on the nine-point musket system.
36:12Curiel is trying to cut off the ring in this round, sliding to the side to try to cut the
36:16ring on Camacho.
36:18See how he's doing that there?
36:19He's following him along the ropes, trying to cut him off by sliding to the side.
36:25Well, it was clearly a wake-up call for Curiel.
36:28He's being much more aggressive.
36:30The crowd takes up the chant you spoke of.
36:33And now they're talking to each other, Barry.
36:35Yep.
36:36He wants him to come at him.
36:37I don't think Camacho will do that.
36:53That was a bad idea by Curiel.
36:55And I knew it the minute he did it.
36:56And Camacho made him pay with the right hand.
37:15Well, Curiel got to him once, but could not catch up a second time.
37:20Each man had a point taken away.
37:39Not much panic going on there.
37:41Let's take another look at that punch that did rock Camacho.
37:45But Curiel's been waiting and hoping he could land one big one to turn the fight around.
37:50There you see an off-balance Camacho kind of stumble away.
37:56That right hand up high on the head was a good shot and caused Camacho's legs to give way a
38:02little bit.
38:06So the 10th and final round, Freddie Curiel has to have a knockout.
38:10I don't think there's any question about that.
38:19Seems to be a little respect between these two.
38:23And a right hand by Curiel.
38:27That was a good one also.
38:32But Curiel's a little desperate and he's going to let his, he's going to let his hands go.
38:36Curiel need not worry about the crowd.
38:38He needs to come forward at Camacho and worry about him.
38:51And Camacho on his bike here.
38:53Good idea for him to try to keep this fight in the center of the ring.
38:56He ducks out of there.
38:57That was not a punch.
39:02Good left hand by Camacho.
39:03He took a right hand for it.
39:07Hector looked down at us here and winked.
39:09Let us know that he was all right.
39:11But both these guys are landing some rather rock-like blows in the last couple of rounds.
39:33Curiel probably wishes he fought a little more at this pace earlier in the fight and with a little more
39:37of this style.
39:38Let his hands go.
39:41and this is not the way you can't argue with what camacho is doing here even though he's
39:47showboating a little bit but you don't have to get in there and brawl with him you see what he's
39:52doing here is what used to infuriate people about his dad that after he'd be hit a couple of times
39:58like he was with edwin rosario or something then he'd go on that bicycle but like he says no one
40:04likes to get hit i do believe camacho has this fight in the bag in terms of the fight on
40:11points
40:14took a right hand again he got a little too cute
40:17i think freddy curiel has shown here tonight that he is a quite a good young fighter
40:33with potential of his own had a little shot that time and didn't quite get home with it
40:41so curiel has 30 seconds remaining to do some business and that is sure an angry welt underneath
40:48his eye bright red
41:03crowd doesn't like all this now curiel answers but curiel has just got to get busy
41:14and that's it
41:24well that doesn't bother him he hardly cares curiel be in game but i think in this case game is
41:31only
41:32going to get your second best crowd very much in the corner of freddy curiel but i think it's going
41:38to be for naught and i think tector camacho will have done enough to win this one and win it
41:42rather
41:42convincingly we'll be back right now we take it to the center of the ring thomas driver thomas
41:49ladies and gentlemen after 10 rounds of boxing we go to the scorecards and we have a unanimous decision
41:56judge shafiq rashada scores about 96 to 93 judge calvin claxton scores about 96 to 92 and judge john
42:05riley scores about 95 to 93 all to your winner hector macho camacho jr
42:16crowd might not like it i think it's probably a pretty fair decision and uh there's a man who will
42:21bear the price of losing as you see and ladies and gentlemen let's hear it for his opponent game
42:25fighter and we're going to see him another day and there's probably most of the guys in this division
42:29he could probably whip up on but tonight he got out quick and right now the man who outquicked him
42:33is with rich varada rich hector i thought that that was a very impressive showing by you tonight
42:39your quickness seemed to be the determining factor well that's my that's my that's my fight
42:43the quickness uh box to see when you have the first round i see the strong you know strong guy
42:47but i came in box and he came on at you at the end uh you you thought i i
42:52thought that you fought
42:53basically a perfect fight for about seven rounds that he he started to put it on you at the end
42:57uh pretty good were you getting tired at all this being your first time first time i want to pace
43:02myself to see how i went um i knew i won the first seven rounds so there's no there's no
43:05reason to stay
43:06there and roll from strong guy he's coming i felt like he was getting strong after every round
43:09but um here i am i won i'm happy yeah well you fought an extremely impressive fight i thought
43:16tonight and the the right type of style to to fight against a guy like this because he came here
43:21to fight he came here to beat you tonight oh yes he came to fight like every point he come
43:24to fight
43:24when they finally find hector comatra jr they come to fight what now for you do you think hector
43:29well that's something that leads to my promoter america president dan goose and my manager
43:32um my job is to fight so whatever next is next all right what do you want to say to
43:37my to my wife
43:38sir i love you to my mother i love you to call out the father to spanish straight it's my
