00:00:00Jim Lampley, whomever Evander Olifield fights next, he will be well-supported and obviously well-paid. Thanks.
00:00:06Coming up next, what we all came to see tonight, whether Riddick Bowe can redeem himself or if Andrew Galata
00:00:12can keep his punches up this time
00:00:14and chisel home the point that he is a force to be reckoned with.
00:00:18This is Bowe Galata the rematch, and it's here now.
00:00:23July 11, 1996, a relatively normal evening in New York City, at least by this city's standards.
00:00:30While the Mets were hosting the Astros at Shea Stadium, and Broadway's finales were kicking into high gear,
00:00:37a heavyweight fight was beginning to unfold at Madison Square Garden.
00:00:42On paper, there was nothing terribly unusual about the matchup about to take place
00:00:46between a young, undefeated Polish heavyweight named Andrew Galata
00:00:50and one of the division's top fighters, former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe.
00:00:56Except for one thing, both men brought into the ring on this night a reputation for the unusual.
00:01:03Galata had bitten one opponent and intentionally head-butted another.
00:01:11Bowe had surrounded himself by an entourage tainted with a history of violent behavior.
00:01:15But as far as most were concerned, Andrew Galata was a mere stepping stone for New York native Riddick Bowe.
00:01:23In the end, though, it was anything but a home run.
00:01:28Oh, it was banded and dynamite combination, left and right.
00:01:33With each and every punch, Galata's lead widened.
00:01:37Galata rocks him back with a right hand.
00:01:39Bowe steps up against the ropes.
00:01:41Galata rocks him again with a right hand and a left.
00:01:45Yet with each and every low blow, his chances of victory narrowed.
00:01:54One point!
00:01:56And it's the third time that he's deducted a point for low blow.
00:02:03In the end, Riddick Bowe barely escaped defeat.
00:02:08Andrew Galata, ahead on every scorecard, was disqualified.
00:02:13And we then witnessed one of the ugliest scenes in American sports history.
00:02:19Millions of people still have questions.
00:02:22But only two men have the answers.
00:02:56For the last five months, there have been questions.
00:02:58Moments from now, we hope to have answers.
00:03:02As TVKO presents, Bow vs. Galata 2.
00:03:08Brought to you by Beachwood H. Budweiser.
00:03:11It's always been true.
00:03:12This Bud's for you.
00:03:14And by AT&T.
00:03:16Your true choice.
00:03:21Welcome to TVKO's presentation of the main event.
00:03:24Bow vs. Galata one more time, but with even more at stake this time.
00:03:29This is Atlantic City, where thousands have come in from a cold night to witness a crossroads fight.
00:03:34We've all waited five months for the rematch between Riddick Bowe and Andrew Galata.
00:03:38We'll find out what both are made of here tonight.
00:03:44Hello again, everybody.
00:03:45What we're about to see is a defining moment for two fighters.
00:03:49Riddick Bowe used to be considered the best.
00:03:52Then he lost focus and all his heavyweight titles.
00:03:55There's always new blood in the fight game waiting to devour you.
00:03:59Five months ago, Andrew Galata came along and nearly dealt Bow a mortal blow.
00:04:03Galata proved he is a real menace with heart, with hunger, and with talent.
00:04:08Qualities Bow must dig deep to rediscover within himself tonight,
00:04:13or risk being counted out of the heavyweight picture for good.
00:04:16Just how much fiber, how much fortitude, and how much fight does Riddick Bowe have left in him?
00:04:21Can he find redemption?
00:04:23Can he rescue his career?
00:04:25Is Galata a fluke, or is he the genuine article?
00:04:29There is unfinished business to attend to because of what happened the first time
00:04:32these two guys tangled.
00:04:34Here's a closer look at that.
00:04:40The build-up to this fight was really un-extraordinary.
00:04:44I didn't know of anything between the camps, any bad feelings, any animosity.
00:04:49A bell went off when you heard 252 pounds.
00:04:52I'm sure a bell went off in the Galata camp.
00:04:54Riddick is vulnerable.
00:04:56Bow probably could have fought better if he had been in shape.
00:04:59I think they took the fight too lightly.
00:05:01The first inkling I got that there was any kind of atmosphere attached to this fight
00:05:06was at the fight, I learned that the night before, at the production meeting,
00:05:12Galata first learned that the fight had been switched from 10 to 12 rounds.
00:05:16Welcome to New York City's Madison Square Garden.
00:05:2012 rounds of boxing.
00:05:22So I was sitting ringside.
00:05:24My wife was to my right, and Jerry Cooney was sitting to my left.
00:05:30He predicted there was going to be a riot.
00:05:33He said, Spike, something's going to happen before this fight's over.
00:05:36You could feel the magnetism in the garden.
00:05:40They were there to see something happen.
00:05:42I was forewarning these people.
00:05:45Every press comes.
00:05:46I forewarned them the day of the fight.
00:05:48Don't forget, we didn't have a fight until about 4.30 in the afternoon.
00:05:50Make sure you check your security force.
00:05:52Make sure you get some people there.
00:05:54So we had prepared a security plan for this night, the same as if we'd have 16,000 people
00:06:02in the building, and we figured that with that security crew, ushers, security officers,
00:06:09all trained, all, you know, in the right places.
00:06:14The mood just before the bell rings for a big fight, and this was a big fight, is always
00:06:18pretty dramatic.
00:06:20Adding to it is the fact that Bo's corner, you have Rock Newman, who is an excitable guy,
00:06:27and in Gulotta's corner, you have Luduva, who's among the most excitable guys in boxing.
00:06:32Round one, Gulotta comes out, and it's far more effective than we thought.
00:06:36He clearly wins the round.
00:06:38He also lands at least a couple of low blows and draws his first warning from referee Wayne
00:06:42Kelly.
00:06:44Round two, for the first time, they go toe-to-toe.
00:06:47With a furious exchange, Gulotta gets the better of it.
00:06:50And again in the second, he lands at least two, if not three, low blows.
00:06:53No warning, no point deduction.
00:06:54Bo, also guilty of a foul, rabid punching, which he did throughout the fight.
00:07:00Round three, a little bit slower round than the second.
00:07:03Interesting, during the round, you hear the first chant of USA, USA.
00:07:09Gulotta lands low again with a left hand, and the referee says to him,
00:07:13Next time it's a point, last warning.
00:07:16Round four, again, Gulotta in control.
00:07:19With 25 seconds left in the round, he lands a low left hand.
00:07:23Bo goes down.
00:07:24Kelly should have issued a count, even though it was an illegal punch.
00:07:28He didn't.
00:07:29He gave Bo five minutes to recover.
00:07:31One point.
00:07:33Round five.
00:07:34Gulotta, for the first time, looks on the verge of stopping Bo.
00:07:38By the round, then, Riddick Bo looks exhausted.
00:07:40And at the bell, Bo pushes Gulotta.
00:07:43Round six.
00:07:44With about 30 seconds left in the round, Gulotta lands a low punch.
00:07:48Kelly deducts another point from Gulotta.
00:07:50This is the second point.
00:07:51Gulotta is flirting with a BQ loss.
00:07:53One point.
00:07:54Round seven.
00:07:55Gulotta lands a low right hand, and for the third time in the fight, he loses a point.
00:08:00One point.
00:08:00Sure enough, 30 seconds left in the round.
00:08:03Gulotta punches low with the left hand.
00:08:05Kelly, without hesitating, waves his arm.
00:08:07And then, the fight is over.
00:08:08That's it.
00:08:10And then, it was over.
00:08:12I was saying to Gulotta, you can ruin somebody's life like that.
00:08:16I'm gonna fight.
00:08:17I'm gonna fight.
00:08:17I'm gonna fight.
00:08:17I'm gonna fight.
00:08:17I'm gonna fight.
00:08:18I'm gonna fight.
00:08:19And that was it for him.
00:08:20That was the spark.
00:08:21You could feel the fire start.
00:08:22Choo.
00:08:23Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:08:24Now, hey.
00:08:25Oh, hey.
00:08:26Oh, hey.
00:08:26Oh, hey.
00:08:27Initially, it seemed limited to the people from both camps.
00:08:30Security didn't do anything to stop the rush into the ring.
00:08:37It was a better man.
00:08:39But if it stopped over here, then something will start over here.
00:08:42It took a long time, a long, long, a long, long time for the cops to get there.
00:08:49So, it was like, unabated mayhem.
00:08:54We've established a much closer tie with the New York Police Department.
00:08:58We have a police observer now in the building for every one of our events, but particularly
00:09:03put an emphasis on boxing.
00:09:05But in addition to that, the ring is really sealed off from the rest of the world.
00:09:12We're much more careful about who the boxers want to give credentials to, because obviously
00:09:17they jumped into the ring and committed a crime.
00:09:21And that started, like pushing over a domino, it started a number of things happening.
00:09:27Somebody could have been killed that night.
00:09:29Very easily, somebody could have been killed that night.
00:09:34Well, the one safe thing to say is that there probably isn't a person here who isn't thinking
00:09:38about the disturbing possibility of any riot happening again tonight.
00:09:41But here we are on this night in Atlantic City, and there are the fighters.
00:09:46This crowd is rocking.
00:09:48This place is tingling with anticipation.
00:09:50Frank, the board now has more on the steps taken to ensure the only punches that will
00:09:55be thrown are from the two fighters you see about to step into the ring.
00:09:59Frank?
00:10:00Well, Nick, certainly this convention hall should be the safest place you could be in a crowd
00:10:05anywhere in the world tonight.
00:10:06Frank?
00:10:07Because of the riot that followed the first Vogelotta fight, security is especially comprehensive,
00:10:13with 25 armed police at ringside alone.
00:10:16And we've been assured that scores of other police and security guards are on the premises.
00:10:22Furthermore, it is understood, although no one will officially confirm it, that New York
00:10:27City cops are here seeking to make arrests of participants in the July riot.
00:10:32Well, soon after that fight, an undetermined number of people were arrested by New York
00:10:38authorities, and Rock Newman, Riddick Bowe's pugnacious manager, was fined $250,000, and
00:10:45he was suspended.
00:10:47TVKO has also learned that the New Jersey Athletic Control Board has warned Newman that any irresponsible
00:10:54behavior may well result in his lifetime ban in all of the United States.
00:11:00moreover, the NYPD impounded the HBO tapes of that fight and are using it to identify
00:11:06culprits, assuming that many of them may very well return in effect to the scene of the crime.
00:11:13But despite this considerable and vigilant police presence, any fight is always more potentially
00:11:19incendiary than our other sporting events.
00:11:21And just as fans tend to speed away in their own cars from automobile races, so does the
00:11:28hitting they see in a boxing match bring the violent instincts of some fans to a boil.
00:11:34Moreover, unlike team sports, where an arena or in a stadium is usually filled almost entirely
00:11:41of the home team fans, a boxing crowd, like the one you hear tonight, is often evenly split
00:11:48among supporters of both fighters.
00:11:50And this is what so often happens abroad at soccer games, and we know tales of those riots
00:11:57only too horribly well.
00:11:59Now, Bo and Galata also follow the oldest boxing formula, match fighters from different ethnic groups.
00:12:07Hit the Irishman versus the Italian, the white versus the black, the Mexican against the Puerto
00:12:11Rican.
00:12:12Galata is not only the latest great white hope, but he is of a distinct nationality, Polish,
00:12:18Polish, an ethnic minority no less than his beau, the African American.
00:12:23And it is late Saturday night at a resort, and fans, whatever their background, have been
00:12:29known to consume alcoholic beverages on such occasions.
00:12:33Moreover, it's been raining hard here in Atlantic City all weekend.
00:12:37So yes, the police here are alert, yet so too are present all the primeval ingredients
00:12:44that make boxing so special, but always so potentially ugly.
00:12:51Jim?
00:12:52All right, thank you, Frank.
00:12:54George, I'll make an optimistic prediction.
00:12:55If ever there was a prize fight we've attended where there was not going to be a riot, I think
00:13:00this is the one tonight.
00:13:02Now, let's turn our attention to what's going to happen in the ring, and I think it's stunning
00:13:06to all of us that this juncture could have arrived so suddenly and so unexpectedly in Rick
00:13:11Bowe's career, but you heard Nick Charles use the phrase crossroads fight.
00:13:15The whole sport seems to have decided that this is it for Bowe.
00:13:18Can he again be the fighter who on Friday, November 13, 1992, beat Evander Holyfield and
00:13:24deservedly became heavyweight champion?
00:13:27Yeah, one good thing that happened in the last boxing match, Riddick Bowe was outpointed,
00:13:32beat to the punch, but he never stopped giving this guy a good fight.
00:13:35So, now he thinks, go back to the drawing table, he's in shape, he can pull this out,
00:13:40this guy will establish himself, re-establish himself as the number one fighter in the world,
00:13:45in my mind, anyway.
00:13:46Galata, he can be the darling, like I said earlier, all he has to do is go out there and
00:13:49do what he did the first time, and don't go below the belt.
00:13:52Well, and you make a good point.
00:13:53If Bowe goes back to his highest level, then the question becomes, how good really is Andrew
00:13:59Galata?
00:14:00And that's a question, Larry, that you posed at the very beginning of the evening when
00:14:02you said, if a more fit Riddick Bowe raises his game, as most people seem to expect, can
00:14:08Galata raise his game a level two?
00:14:10He raised it the first time, and I think for an interesting reason, Jim.
00:14:15That is not only because Andrew Galata is big and strong and tough and especially mean,
00:14:21but he's an athlete.
00:14:23Custom out of the old trainer used to say that he hated to put his fighters in with fighters
00:14:28who were athletes.
00:14:30He thought that athletes were people who could run and jump and had good hand-eye coordination,
00:14:36and fighters don't all have that sort of thing.
00:14:40And so a fighter who is an athlete with his quickness and movement often gave pure fighters
00:14:45a hard time.
00:14:47Andrew Galata is an athlete.
00:14:49What he lacked in the first fight was the ability to throw the body punches properly.
00:14:56If he can raise his punches, his body punches, he can raise his game, Jim.
00:15:01All right.
00:15:01Those are the questions that will face us when Boal and Galata come into the ring in just
00:15:06a couple of minutes.
00:15:07Right now, let's ourselves go into the ring with a singer named Desiree for our national
00:15:11anthem.
00:15:12Ladies and gentlemen, your attention, please.
00:15:14Would everyone please rise for our national anthem to be performed tonight by a very special
00:15:20guest, the talented Broadway and Atlantic recording star, Ms. Desiree Coleman Jackson.
00:15:34Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, what's so proud they win?
00:15:56We have won, who's miles, who's so proud they win, who's so proud they win?
00:16:06Yes, early light, what's so proud they win?ین,
00:16:07who's so proud they win? And so
00:16:12would you make a medal song for us? Yeah,
00:16:23I see, by the dawn's early light and the dawn's early light, how can you win?
00:16:26we he watched were so gallantly streaming
00:16:39and the rocket's red glare
00:16:48the bombs bursting in air
00:16:57yeah
00:16:58Peru
00:17:00through the night
00:17:04that our flag was still there
00:17:16oh say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
00:17:39o'er the land of the free
00:17:45o'er the land of the free
00:18:01Oh, the brine!
00:18:17Tale of the tape of the battle between Riddick Bowe and Andrew Gulotta.
00:18:22And even though we think of Gulotta as being much younger
00:18:24because his relatively sparser exposure makes it seem that way,
00:18:29they are only one year apart in age.
00:18:32Bowe with a one-inch height advantage.
00:18:34Gulotta outweighs him by four pounds this time around
00:18:37after Bowe outweighed Gulotta by 11 pounds in the first fight.
00:18:41And Gulotta has a three-inch reach advantage over Riddick Bowe.
00:18:47Punched at numbers, Larry Merchant.
00:18:49These are the lowest connect percentages for Bowe
00:18:53since we have been tracking him in his first fight with Gulotta,
00:18:56which bespeaks his uncertainty after Gulotta was beating him to the jab,
00:19:04which we'll now see.
00:19:06You can see that Gulotta was throwing more jabs and landing them,
00:19:09and he threw Bowe off his game.
00:19:12Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
00:19:16The Riddick Bowe, Andrew Gulotta fight, is scheduled for 10 rounds.
00:19:19The standing eight count is in effect.
00:19:22There is no three-and-outdown rule.
00:19:24Only the referee can stop the fight,
00:19:25and he cannot be saved by the bell at any round,
00:19:27including the 10th and final round.
00:19:29Jim.
00:19:31And the significance of the entry music for Bowe, quite obvious.
00:19:35His manager, Rock Newman, sang this past week,
00:19:38I can't understand why anybody would want to root
00:19:41for a Polish-born fighter against an American.
00:19:44Come on, come on.
00:20:56A blatant attempt to get the crowd on his side, and why not?
00:21:03Not to mention that we're in New Jersey.
00:21:08And I've always wondered what a phalanx of police was, but I think that was it surrounding Bo.
00:21:14And there's the record for Riddick.
00:21:1639 wins, the one loss in the second of his three meetings with Evander Holyfield.
00:21:2232 KOs for Bo.
00:21:28Writer's records tonight are being brought to you by the ring, the Bible of boxing.
00:21:39And Andrew Galata chooses to enter the ring to the strains of the Polish national anthem.
00:22:04Come on, move.
00:22:07Come on, move.
00:22:16Come on, move.
00:22:27Come on, move.
00:22:30Come on, move.
00:22:31Come on, move.
00:22:32Come on, move.
00:22:33Come on, move.
00:22:36Come on, move.
00:22:37Come on, move.
00:22:38Come on, move.
00:22:39Come on, move.
00:22:39Come on, move.
00:22:40Come on, move.
00:22:42Come on, move.
00:22:43Come on, move.
00:22:44Come on, move.
00:22:45Come on, move.
00:22:46Come on, move.
00:23:20I've always thought there was a kind of medieval splendor to these walk-ins.
00:23:26This is dramatic stuff.
00:23:37Polish American tears of joy and excitement in the arena already tonight, even before the action begins.
00:23:45Andrew Galata was 28-0 when he took the ring against Riddick Bowe in Madison Square Garden in July.
00:23:50So the only loss of his career came in his most stirring performance.
00:23:59And let's go up to Michael Buffer for the continuation of this drama.
00:24:03Ladies and gentlemen, main events, Caesars Atlantic City and your undisputed, undefeated King of Beers, Budweiser.
00:24:14This Bud's for you.
00:24:15To present the featured bout of the evening, 10 rounds of boxing in the heavyweight division.
00:26:26Thank you for joining us.
00:26:30And his opponent across the ring, fighting out of the red corner.
00:26:34He's wearing a red trim with gold and weighs 235 pounds.
00:26:40This 1988 Olympic silver medalist now has a professional record of 39 victories.
00:26:4632 by KO with only one the he is the pride and joy of Brooklyn, New York, a two time
00:26:55world
00:26:55world heavyweight champion and former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world,
00:27:04Riddick, Big Daddy Bale!
00:27:21Andrew!
00:27:24Louis!
00:27:40All right, boxers, you received your instructions in the dressing room.
00:27:44Anything below here is low.
00:27:46Anything below here is low.
00:27:47Okay?
00:27:48Let's keep your punches up.
00:27:49Obey my commands.
00:27:50Let's touch gloves.
00:27:51Have a good, clean fight.
00:27:52Let's touch gloves.
00:27:55Riddick Bale comes out of the mean streets of Brooklyn and rose to prominence.
00:28:02Andrew Gulotta rose from the mean streets of Warsaw.
00:28:07Let's hope they conduct themselves with honor tonight.
00:28:11And you saw the police uniforms at ringside so woefully absent on the night of July 11,
00:28:18so fully in evidence everywhere in the arena here tonight.
00:28:21But still, this is a live, electric crowd as round one begins.
00:28:26Riddick Bale wore into the ring a robe with the name of his mother Dorothy Bale on the back.
00:28:31She's the one who told him after the first fight,
00:28:33if you're gonna get your ass whipped like that, you ought to retire.
00:28:42In the early stages, both fighters, they were both looking for the,
00:28:46to establish the dominance of the left jab.
00:28:49Riddick Bale went down this time to the body jabbing.
00:28:52And Bale consciously trying to double up on the jab.
00:28:55You saw earlier the tape piece that demonstrated how difficult that was for him in the first fight.
00:29:04No mystery to what Gulotta wants to do. He works off the jab as well.
00:29:08He works off the jab as well.
00:29:08I'm looking for the jab.
00:29:09I'm looking for the jab.
00:29:13You're trying to do that.
00:29:15You're trying to do that.
00:29:16You're trying to move him out of the jab.
00:29:18You're trying to move him out.
00:29:18The testified in the first fight was, I destroyed his jab.
00:29:23The issue here is whether Riddick Bale has put it together again.
00:29:29A lot of people expected Bale to come out firing and try to make an impression early on Gulotta.
00:29:35if so he's trying to make a tactical impression there is no immediate
00:29:40firestorm here great boy is going down even trying to throw a right hand to
00:29:45the body and there's a vicious left jab that landed flush for Gallardo
00:29:58missing with right hand this could be the beginning of the old stuff great
00:30:04boy want to stay in charge here you got to make sure every right hand throwing
00:30:07connects a lot of doubling the jab and jamming right through Bo's guard they're
00:30:11tripling the jab and the Polish-American contingent in the crowd already rising
00:30:16from their seats
00:30:28Andrew Gallardo is a lot better fighter moving backwards than he is coming
00:30:33forward Rick Bo should move back a little bit let him come into his right
00:30:37hand since you can't find it reaching at him let him come to you oh not yet really
00:30:42stepping forward and extending on the jab a lot of has been able to pop his as he
00:30:52so far round one of Bo Gallardo two looks a lot like round one of Bo Gallardo one
00:31:07wild misses by Bo Gallardo had a very precise round
00:31:15Riddick Bo tonight without the legendary Eddie Fudge for the first time Bell Torrance with the q-tip
00:31:22behind his ear he's now the chief trainer
00:31:25and go back you know he come I would just take that take that jab and keep that hand
00:31:30right in front of you okay when you use a jab step in and don't pull away from those
00:31:35punches when he jab jab with him jab with him and keep your hands up at the wall
00:31:39team okay now you got to establish the jab establish the jab with the jab in a
00:31:44fan but keep your hands up and do not pull back from the shot as Gallardo again
00:31:48destroyed Bo's jab take a look
00:31:54and there again
00:31:58that was the same sequence what I noticed George in the first round is that Bo who
00:32:04is a naturally aggressive fighter was trying to be more measured and that he
00:32:10seemed a little uncomfortable or awkward in that stance that's true and each time
00:32:15that Gallardo was able to land with that left jab Bo was getting ready to throw a right hand
00:32:20in round one by punch stat numbers Andrew Gallardo landed almost twice as many punches as Rick Bo 26-14
00:32:27he was more accurate with the jab as well although Bo to his credit attempted 41 jabs in the first
00:32:34round
00:32:39last time Bo would land a left jab and then move his head back and Gallardo would catch him on
00:32:44the counter he's got to move his feet
00:32:48a lot of landed his first left hook about 10 seconds ago
00:32:55so far Gallardo fighting a tactical fight at distance from Bo apparently confident that his longer reach and stiffer jab
00:33:04can give him the edge from out here
00:33:09hard power punches from Gallardo
00:33:11Bo goes down
00:33:14second time in his career that Bo has been down and he's wobbling badly
00:33:18this was a good left right combo by Gallardo
00:33:21plenty of time left in the round
00:33:23and Gallardo looks as calm as an assassin as he steps back in
00:33:27and his first punch is to the body
00:33:33Bo's not answering here
00:33:36Riddick Bo doesn't know where he is
00:33:39and let's see if Gallardo can finish George
00:33:42you tell us about the techniques he'll use
00:33:44well he caught Riddick Bo not prepared but now when a guy knows he's gonna knock him out he has
00:33:49a tendency to cover up
00:33:50and Gallardo has to be careful don't give him any courage by landing and letting him land a good shot
00:33:55so far Bo hasn't been able to counter with anything
00:33:58he's trying he gets a left hand in there
00:34:03now a right hand for Bo as he finds himself a little bit
00:34:06but Gallardo wobbles him again
00:34:08Gallardo to the body
00:34:12Bo finally holds on
00:34:14Gallardo's landed a lot of leather here
00:34:16if Riddick Bo makes it out of the round
00:34:19it'll be an act of Herculean courage
00:34:23Gallardo again to the body
00:34:24hard right hand shot
00:34:26and another
00:34:27Bo's taking a vicious storm of punishment
00:34:34a left hand counter landed for Bo
00:34:38he's not really sure what he's doing in there
00:34:40he's just reaching and throwing
00:34:41look here
00:34:42look here
00:34:43no, no, no, no, no, no
00:34:44Eddie Cotton starts to talk to Gallardo about low blows
00:34:47and this will save Riddick Bo in round two
00:34:52he's taking a point away from Gallardo
00:34:55and he's giving Bo a chance to revive
00:35:00okay
00:35:02and there's a cut over or under Gallardo's eye
00:35:06I'm not sure which
00:35:06but Gallardo has a seemingly dangerous cut
00:35:10I think it's on the left eye
00:35:14I think it's on the left eye
00:35:14Gallardo was very smart
00:35:15he went back to the body
00:35:1910 seconds left in the round
00:35:31I gave Gallardo a two point round
00:35:36because it was a three point round
00:35:39and a point got taken away
00:35:41a great
00:35:43a great
00:35:44What about you
00:35:48I'm not sure
00:35:49I'm not sure
00:35:49but I'm not sure
00:35:52but I'm sure
00:35:52but I'm sure
00:35:53I'm sure
00:35:53I'm sure
00:35:53I'm sure
00:35:53He's got the water
00:35:57he's got the water
00:35:57a sensational round
00:35:58where is the cut
00:36:00it looks like it's in a bad place
00:36:02right over the eye of the lid
00:36:06take a look at the knockdown
00:36:08The punch landed high.
00:36:12You saw it landed almost on the scalp, George,
00:36:15above the ear.
00:36:17He came back with that left hook,
00:36:19which he so often does.
00:36:22Now, you pointed out, George,
00:36:24how Gallardo finishes every combination with the left hook.
00:36:26He's well-schooled.
00:36:27You always finish up and get yourself back in position
00:36:30with your left hook.
00:36:36Eddie Futch said that Riddick Bowe is a lost cause.
00:36:40Is he? He comes out fighting.
00:36:43He's no lost cause,
00:36:45but he's in there with one tough fighter.
00:36:47Bowe landed a long right hand,
00:36:49which could start the bleeding on Gallardo's left eye again.
00:36:53Gallardo seems a little bit more tentative,
00:36:55perhaps worried about the effect of that cut.
00:37:01This is where experience comes in.
00:37:03You've been in that shape before.
00:37:05Fight your way out of it.
00:37:07Gallardo, he's picking up experience.
00:37:09One thing is for sure, George,
00:37:11as Bowe lands another long right hand.
00:37:14Riddick Bowe might save himself with right hands
00:37:16and power punches here,
00:37:17but Gallardo has the longer, stiffer, better jab again.
00:37:21Now, Gallardo is starting to slow down
00:37:22and looking for one shot, too.
00:37:24Good job, bro. Listen up.
00:37:26You see, he lands the left hook.
00:37:28He doesn't come back with his right hand.
00:37:29If he keeps the combinations up, believe me,
00:37:31he can get Riddick Bowe right back in that same condition.
00:37:34Gallardo landed a low blow in there,
00:37:36and if he does that a few times,
00:37:38that could get him thinking some negative thoughts.
00:37:41Already, he's got to worry about the left eye.
00:37:43And he's forgetting how to position himself
00:37:46away from Riddick Bowe's uppercut.
00:37:47Let's go, let's go. Step back, step back.
00:37:48Bowe's making a nice little comeback at close quarters
00:37:51and getting inside Gallardo's jab.
00:37:53When they step back out at distance,
00:37:55Andrew dominates.
00:37:57Why is Gallardo staying in so close, do you think, George?
00:38:01And he's not doing it like he did the last time.
00:38:03He's allowing Riddick Bowe to come up with that uppercut.
00:38:06Yeah, he's not turning sideways as effectively.
00:38:09Good job, good job, good job.
00:38:09And he was so perfect last time.
00:38:11This time, he's got to be more perfect with punches.
00:38:13Blood all around Gallardo's left eye.
00:38:16Hard to tell whether it's damaging his vision at this point.
00:38:19Now he's starting to blink, and no question,
00:38:21Bowe is targeting the left eye with those looping overhand rights.
00:38:24And that's a good punch for Riddick.
00:38:31Let's go.
00:38:33Let's go.
00:38:35If Gallardo can only step back there and get his combinations back up,
00:38:39he can regain control of this fight.
00:38:42But Gallardo's thought process doesn't seem to be as clear now
00:38:46as it was in the first two rounds.
00:38:47And Bowe is going to the power punches.
00:38:49That might turn it around for him.
00:38:53Let's go.
00:39:04Galardo is a good fighter, but Riddick Bowe is possibly the bravest fighter
00:39:07I've ever seen in the heavyweight division.
00:39:09Next to Muhammad Ali.
00:39:10What makes you say that?
00:39:12You knock him down, he's just seemed to forgotten all about it.
00:39:15Hey, I'm in control.
00:39:18Hard left hand by Galada.
00:39:20Bowe lands a right.
00:39:22They fire away at each other.
00:39:28And Bowe can take credit for that round
00:39:31because of the extra conditioning that he put himself through.
00:39:35I want that right hand!
00:39:41You're all right. You're all right.
00:39:43Listen to me.
00:39:45Huh? No.
00:39:46You're all right. You get out there and fight now.
00:39:48This is a championship.
00:39:49You throw the right hand.
00:39:51You throw the right hand.
00:39:52The key man in Galada's corner is Cutman,
00:39:54and Joe Sousa, right there.
00:39:56He's one of the best in the business.
00:39:57You guys ready to fall down.
00:39:58You guys ready to go.
00:39:59One combination.
00:40:00You guys have to step him in.
00:40:01This is your time to stand up and be mad.
00:40:03One combination.
00:40:03Two of those combinations together.
00:40:05One, two.
00:40:06Right hand's left to us.
00:40:07Understand me?
00:40:08You've got to fight this bastard.
00:40:10When you get up off this chair, it's like, you fight.
00:40:12This goes back to the first round.
00:40:14We're going to try to see where the cut comes from.
00:40:16Oh, that's the butt.
00:40:21There you see the deliberate butt,
00:40:23which caused Galada a point in the first round.
00:40:26And we're told that that's not what caused the cut over his eye.
00:40:29We're told that the cut over his eye
00:40:30was produced by one of those counter right hands
00:40:33that Bowe was able to land
00:40:34when Galada was hammering him against the ropes.
00:40:42Galada must go right back to the basics.
00:40:44It all happened because he was boxing Riddick Bowe.
00:40:49Galada flirts with low blow danger again
00:40:51and lands a little counter left hook in there.
00:40:53Bowe, you saw landing a hard right hand.
00:40:55Riddick comes to the body.
00:40:59Riddick Bowe fighting with a nothing-to-lose attitude now.
00:41:02He was almost gone on this evening.
00:41:04But now he's back in it big time.
00:41:08And Galada stumbles.
00:41:12Andrew Galada's never been knocked down,
00:41:15but he will be in a few seconds if this keeps up.
00:41:19Three, two, three, one, six, seven, seven, eight.
00:41:28All right, let's go.
00:41:29You ready to go?
00:41:29You ready to go?
00:41:30Let's go.
00:41:35Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go!
00:41:37Rick Bowe seems to be doing it all with overhand right.
00:41:45Well, let's see if Galada has the stuff
00:41:47that Bowe had when he came back.
00:41:49Bowe landed a vicious right-hand uppercut,
00:41:52the kind that he couldn't land in the first fight.
00:41:55Galada seems not fully in control of his senses here.
00:41:58He's thrown a lot of punches below the belt, Galada, yeah,
00:42:01and the referee seems to let it all alone.
00:42:04Referee Eddie Cotton is 240 pounds.
00:42:07That's good.
00:42:08But he's never had a fight of this magnitude before.
00:42:11That's bad.
00:42:12And this is rapidly becoming like a Rocky movie.
00:42:16He's got a lot of punches.
00:42:19He's got a lot of punches.
00:42:23He's got a lot of punches.
00:42:23If only Galada can...
00:42:25Low blows by Galada, and Eddie Cotton will pull him away.
00:42:28Excuse me, George.
00:42:28That's the first warning for Lowe's.
00:42:29You're right.
00:42:30It's time to warn him now.
00:42:31He let it all alone for a few rounds.
00:42:33Now the referee gives an honest-to-goodness warning.
00:42:35And Galada rests on Cotton and got himself some rest.
00:42:39And Bowe tried to end the fight with one sweeping right hand,
00:42:43and Galada dunked it.
00:42:47Come on.
00:42:47Oh!
00:42:50He can't stop himself.
00:42:56Take your time.
00:42:57Take your time.
00:42:58He's got it for five years.
00:42:58Take your time.
00:42:59Take your time.
00:43:00Take your time.
00:43:01Take your time.
00:43:02A fighter who simply cannot stop himself
00:43:05from throwing low blows.
00:43:09Stay in the corner.
00:43:10Stay in the corner.
00:43:11Stay in the corner.
00:43:12Jim, this is rapidly becoming a 10-7 round
00:43:14because Riddick's winning a round.
00:43:16Galada's going to lose one point for the knockdown
00:43:18and one point for the low blow.
00:43:20Eddie Cotton just deducted a point for the low blow.
00:43:22So it's going to become a big 10-7 round for Riddick both.
00:43:25And the odd thing about it, however,
00:43:27however, is that it's giving Galada
00:43:29a chance to rest from the barrage.
00:43:31So it's paying off for him,
00:43:33except the corner point.
00:43:34You can see in close.
00:43:37He wants to punch back.
00:43:39He doesn't move down to punch up.
00:43:42A body punch should be punched in an upward arc.
00:43:45He loops those punches.
00:43:47Irony upon irony.
00:43:49Bowe got a rest when Cotton spoke to Galada
00:43:53about the intentional headbutt.
00:43:55Now Galada gets a rest
00:43:56as Cotton talks to Galada about low blows.
00:44:00Riddick Bowe now should have a straight right hand.
00:44:03He wouldn't miss,
00:44:03but he keeps going over top.
00:44:07Hard right hand lands for Galada
00:44:09as Bowe is missing with wide-winging shots.
00:44:14Good job.
00:44:16Good job.
00:44:16Come on.
00:44:17This way.
00:44:17This way.
00:44:18This way.
00:44:18This way.
00:44:18This way.
00:44:18Somebody said
00:44:19a heavyweight haggler earns.
00:44:22I think we've already had him.
00:44:34One good fight.
00:44:38Draw intensity.
00:44:41What next?
00:44:42I don't want any punches to the body.
00:44:44I want all straight punches.
00:44:46And God damn it,
00:44:47step the jab in.
00:44:48No more body punches.
00:44:50They've got to go to the head with this guy.
00:44:52Uppercut is going to the head with this guy.
00:44:53Straight right hand,
00:44:54you can't miss him.
00:44:55And come back with the left hook.
00:44:56That's what you've got to do.
00:44:58He's shot.
00:44:59He can't stand.
00:45:04Let's watch the knockdown.
00:45:07Good right uppercut
00:45:08seemed to do the most damage.
00:45:09That hurt Gulotta.
00:45:11He's trying to hang in
00:45:12and goes down.
00:45:14Big right hand.
00:45:18Seconds out.
00:45:19Seconds out.
00:45:20There's the punch
00:45:21that did the most damage.
00:45:23Seconds out.
00:45:24And you heard from the corner
00:45:26of Gulotta
00:45:28no more body punches.
00:45:30He should have had that instruction in July
00:45:32and he would have won the fight.
00:45:35But can he remember it
00:45:38in the heat of battle?
00:45:39I don't think so.
00:45:40Gulotta only threw eight jabs
00:45:41in that last round.
00:45:42And just quickly to recap,
00:45:44both fighters have been down.
00:45:45Bowe was down in the second.
00:45:47Gulotta was down in the fourth.
00:45:48Harold, how do you have it?
00:45:50Two rounds apiece
00:45:51but 37-35
00:45:53in the all-important point scoring
00:45:54in fact with Riddick Bowe
00:45:56because Andrew Gulotta
00:45:57has already lost two points
00:45:58from referee Eddie Cotton
00:45:59taking away a point for the headbutt,
00:46:01a point for the low blow
00:46:02and Riddick Bowe gets an extra point
00:46:04for the knockdown.
00:46:05Now if he's taken two points already
00:46:06and we're only in the fifth round,
00:46:08is Andrew Gulotta headed
00:46:09for another disqualification?
00:46:10I have it 37-36
00:46:13because I thought
00:46:14there was a three-point round earlier
00:46:16with one point deducted
00:46:17in the knockdown round.
00:46:19Riddick Bowe is tired.
00:46:26And so is Gulotta.
00:46:28And they both got a right to do.
00:46:39Folks, this has nothing to do
00:46:40with anything
00:46:42except who can hit who harder.
00:46:44And as much as Gulotta won
00:46:46the tactical battle
00:46:47in the first fight,
00:46:48I think the tactical battle
00:46:50is shifting Bowe's direction here
00:46:52if he's going to be strong enough
00:46:54over the course of the fight
00:46:55to hold up
00:46:56because as you point out, George,
00:46:57he's breathing hard
00:46:58and looks exhausted.
00:47:00That's true.
00:47:00And sometimes when you take
00:47:01that weight off incorrectly,
00:47:03these are some of the things
00:47:04that happen to you.
00:47:05You can be in control.
00:47:07The next thing you know,
00:47:08you're out of control.
00:47:09Hard shot by Gulotta.
00:47:11Bowe is wasted again.
00:47:15That's a knockdown.
00:47:16That's another knockdown.
00:47:19Count has the gun at ringside.
00:47:21Cotton gets Gulotta
00:47:22to the neutral corner.
00:47:25Eight.
00:47:26Okay, you have to go.
00:47:27Okay, you got eight.
00:47:29Let's go.
00:47:30That is a very wobbly,
00:47:32glassy-eyed bow.
00:47:34And Gulotta starts to the body
00:47:36and takes his time wisely.
00:47:40Couldn't finish him in round two.
00:47:42Got another chance here.
00:47:44But now Gulotta looks tired.
00:47:47Switches to southpaw.
00:47:55That left hook might have done it.
00:47:58Gulotta throws a body punch,
00:47:59flirting with disaster.
00:48:02The referee should make Riddick Bowe
00:48:04get off those ropes.
00:48:05Bowe takes a hard left-hand shot.
00:48:08Gulotta misses again
00:48:09with the left that would have done it.
00:48:12Right hand lands for Gulotta.
00:48:14No room for Bowe to fall down.
00:48:17Ropes are holding him up.
00:48:22Gulotta rubs Bowe in the face
00:48:23with his gloves.
00:48:24He's flirting with being disqualified.
00:48:26And he doesn't have to do it like this.
00:48:30And again, Bowe survives.
00:48:33And I gave another three-point round.
00:48:36It's time to Gulotta.
00:48:43Put your leg up.
00:48:45Put your leg up.
00:48:46Put your leg up.
00:48:47Put your leg up.
00:48:48Relax.
00:48:50Relax.
00:48:50Relax.
00:48:52Take a deep breath.
00:48:54In your nose.
00:48:55Fill up your lungs through your nose.
00:48:57Fill up your mouth.
00:48:59That was the punch
00:49:00that set up the knockdown.
00:49:02A very good, straight right hand.
00:49:04You see that Bowe is already
00:49:06reeling around the ring.
00:49:08And the punch again
00:49:09on the top of the head.
00:49:10And here will come the knockdown.
00:49:17And this is the end of the round.
00:49:20All right, second go!
00:49:23Riddick Bowe has taken a lot of punches,
00:49:25big punches in the last few years.
00:49:28I don't know how long he can take this.
00:49:30And tactically in round five,
00:49:33Gulotta regained his senses
00:49:34and threw 35 jabs,
00:49:37landing 22 of them.
00:49:38That's what set up the assault.
00:49:40And Bowe is going right to the ropes.
00:49:42So you wonder if his,
00:49:44how his legs are holding up, George.
00:49:46Oh, I don't think there's much
00:49:48on Riddick Bowe holding up that well.
00:49:50Gulotta has got to go to the body,
00:49:52jab him to the body,
00:49:53and then bring his left hook back up,
00:49:54and he'll have a knockout.
00:49:55Bowe looks defenseless for the moment.
00:50:02This is indeed a courageous performance
00:50:04by Bowe,
00:50:05who seems not to have any of his faculties
00:50:08as he stands in front
00:50:09of the menacing Gulotta.
00:50:13And now Eddie Cotton's going to warn Gulotta
00:50:15for rabbit punching.
00:50:18And incidentally, guys,
00:50:19Gulotta has not only that cut over his eye now,
00:50:22but he's got a cut on the left side of his lip
00:50:24that goes all the way through
00:50:26from inside the mouth to outside.
00:50:28So Joe Souza is under enormous pressure
00:50:30between rounds to keep Gulotta in the fight.
00:50:36Gulotta's jab is moving, Bowe.
00:50:39That jab is moving a 235-pound man, George.
00:50:44You know, Riddick Bowe is not moving his head at all.
00:50:46He bends down right into Gulotta's power.
00:50:48Well, Gulotta's got a chance to pile up points here
00:50:51if he can avoid throwing low blows.
00:50:53And Bowe is just looping wild shots,
00:50:56but he's coming back again.
00:50:58Intelligently, Bowe leans all over Gulotta
00:51:00and gives him no room.
00:51:02Bowe seems, every time he throw a right hand,
00:51:04he just seems to foul out himself.
00:51:07Gulotta threw another body punch.
00:51:09He's flirting with disaster again.
00:51:11Bowe lands that long right hand
00:51:13but doesn't have much on it.
00:51:17Who's in better condition?
00:51:19Who wants it more?
00:51:31Who wants it more?
00:51:33At this point,
00:51:34Riddick Bowe punches his hands.
00:51:35They've got no sting on him at all.
00:51:38Gulotta, all he has to do
00:51:39is just stand up there to him
00:51:41and land three punches
00:51:41and Riddick Bowe is on the floor.
00:51:43But Gulotta dropped his right hand
00:51:44and Bowe almost nailed him
00:51:46with a wild left hook
00:51:47that would have changed the fight
00:51:48one more time.
00:51:53Just to be standing up in there,
00:51:54where Riddick Bowe is showing
00:51:56a powerful force of will.
00:52:01One good right hand by Riddick Bowe.
00:52:07Gulotta seems to sense
00:52:08there's no power on Riddick Bowe's right hand anymore.
00:52:13Bowe's mother, Dorothy,
00:52:15so disturbed by what she saw
00:52:17in their first meeting,
00:52:18isn't watching the fight tonight.
00:52:20That's a quick thing.
00:52:22The last fall again.
00:52:23They switched back.
00:52:25They've done a very good job
00:52:27on Gulotta's eyes as well.
00:52:29They're not bleeding or bothering him.
00:52:31And he landed a right cross
00:52:32in the closing seconds of the round
00:52:34and I don't know what's keeping Bowe on his feet.
00:52:36And even if he survives this
00:52:37and should win,
00:52:38this may end his career,
00:52:41the punishment he's taking tonight.
00:52:43End his career as a top big-time heavyweight.
00:52:46I want straight punches to these guys.
00:52:47I want you straight to the head.
00:52:50You got this guy ready to fall down.
00:52:51Make him fall.
00:52:52Turn him, turn him, turn him.
00:52:54Don't stand in front of him.
00:52:56Andrew, stay in the center of the ring.
00:52:59Step around this man.
00:53:00Do not go back.
00:53:02Get control of yourself right now.
00:53:04Get control of your mind right now.
00:53:06You keep those hands up in front of you.
00:53:07You keep that jab hand going.
00:53:09You understand?
00:53:10I want to see doubles.
00:53:11I want to see double jabs.
00:53:13Right hand.
00:53:13On the inside,
00:53:14make him work a little short of a cut.
00:53:15The guy is dead tired,
00:53:17but he'll see you tired.
00:53:19Okay?
00:53:20Okay?
00:53:21No second.
00:53:22All right.
00:53:22All right.
00:53:23Now this time,
00:53:24you got him?
00:53:25Come on, your baby's over there howling.
00:53:26Come on, your baby's over there howling.
00:53:28Get out there and fight him.
00:53:30Get out there and fight him.
00:53:36Is it already the seventh round?
00:53:39Amazing.
00:53:51Really close thing to be taking control,
00:53:53taking control with his jab,
00:53:55but every time he throws a right hand,
00:53:57he seems to fall into Galata's power.
00:54:00Bo getting something of a second wind here to begin round seven.
00:54:04All go.
00:54:04He still looks wobbly most of the time.
00:54:07Galata just missing short with the right hand.
00:54:17That's got to put Bo in trouble again.
00:54:19The second one of those right-handed shots landed flush.
00:54:27How much of this can Bo take?
00:54:30Galata is very smart.
00:54:31He's not throwing a lot of power with those punches.
00:54:33He's just throwing them for the sake of connecting.
00:54:35And that's doing more trouble
00:54:37to Riddick Bo than anything.
00:54:38Yeah, it's keeping Riddick back on his heels.
00:54:40It's stopping him from mounting any offense of his own.
00:54:45And it's keeping Galata
00:54:47from having any blood problems
00:54:49with the cuts over his eye and under his mouth.
00:54:56Bo landed a counter shot there.
00:54:58Right hand and then a left two
00:55:00as Galata backed away.
00:55:01But basically, this is target practice for Galata
00:55:03who snaps Bo's head back again with the right hand.
00:55:14Ooh.
00:55:20Hard right hand by Bo.
00:55:22And Galata takes it
00:55:23and answers with a combo.
00:55:30Good boy's probably wondering,
00:55:32why am I so weak?
00:55:34I see it all, but I can't do anything about it.
00:55:37You lose weight improperly,
00:55:38it'll happen every time.
00:55:41George, he trains for three months,
00:55:44but maybe he brought himself down
00:55:46a little bit too fine, over-trained.
00:55:48Whatever the case,
00:55:51those punches aren't doing him any good.
00:55:53And maybe too fast.
00:55:54You can tell that he's in shape,
00:55:55he's just not able to do anything
00:55:56to protect himself.
00:55:57Well, he started training camp at 282,
00:55:59lost 47 pounds,
00:56:00came all the way down to 235,
00:56:02did it in a relative hurry
00:56:03because he was proud
00:56:04that he was at fighting weight
00:56:05for a few weeks before this bout,
00:56:07but, George, you say that's not all good.
00:56:10No, you just gotta make sure
00:56:12you got the right trainer.
00:56:13Any punch being in that training camp
00:56:14could have made a lot of difference
00:56:15because you gotta know
00:56:16when to tell a fella,
00:56:17layoff, layoff.
00:56:19He seems to have won it just too badly.
00:56:24If this fight goes 10 rounds,
00:56:26that'll be the biggest upset
00:56:27since Holyfield over Tyson.
00:56:29Is Bo playing possum?
00:56:32No, he's not.
00:56:35I think that crowd could reasonably
00:56:37have been scored a two-point round
00:56:39because Bo absorbed a terrible beating.
00:56:43How are you feeling?
00:56:44I think I'm a good one.
00:56:45He's off the rope, Bo.
00:56:47Keep going.
00:56:49How you feeling?
00:56:50Okay?
00:56:51Now, listen.
00:56:53If you don't show me something this round,
00:56:54I'm gonna stop.
00:56:55The guy ain't doing nothing,
00:56:56but you understand what I'm saying?
00:56:57Now, take a deep breath.
00:56:59The guy can't stand up.
00:57:00Take a deep breath.
00:57:01Breathe.
00:57:02Now, tell me what you're gonna do.
00:57:03You're gonna jab, right?
00:57:05You're gonna jab,
00:57:06you're gonna put a straight right hand down.
00:57:07You gotta stop.
00:57:08You gotta stop.
00:57:09Golada is relentless.
00:57:12He's in better shape.
00:57:14His head is clear.
00:57:16He's trying to get through Bo's defenses,
00:57:20taking his time,
00:57:21looking for one big shot.
00:57:23That almost was it.
00:57:26And in Bo's corner,
00:57:28they were saying to him,
00:57:29if you don't do something here,
00:57:32we'll stop the fight.
00:57:34Believe me,
00:57:34they wouldn't do him an injustice.
00:57:36You heard Bell Torrance saying,
00:57:38I'm gonna stop it
00:57:39if you don't show me something.
00:57:40Harold, how you got it?
00:57:41Jim, five rounds to two,
00:57:43but only 65-63,
00:57:45Andrew Golada.
00:57:46The reason he's not ahead
00:57:47more on the points
00:57:48is because he lost those two points
00:57:49that Eddie Cotton took away.
00:57:51But still,
00:57:52five to two,
00:57:5365-63,
00:57:54Andrew Golada.
00:57:55My punch stat numbers,
00:57:57round seven was a brutal massacre.
00:57:59Golada landing 43 power shots
00:58:01to only six punches for Bo.
00:58:05And there it is again.
00:58:09Riddick's gonna have to hope to get lucky
00:58:11and answer this with a haymaker
00:58:13because when they start to box again,
00:58:16Golada has all the answers now.
00:58:18I don't think that Riddick Bo
00:58:20has another haymaker in his bag.
00:58:32It's seldom that you see heavyweights
00:58:34take that many shots
00:58:35without going down.
00:58:36So this is the kind of fight
00:58:38that damages a young man's career.
00:58:41Lows 29.
00:58:43Hard right hand.
00:58:45Golada ate two right hands there.
00:58:48But comes back with a brutal shot of his own.
00:58:52Where did that come from?
00:58:54Where did Riddick Bo find that?
00:58:56Some reservoir of courage and will.
00:58:58This may well be the end of his career
00:59:00near the top of the heavyweight division,
00:59:02but he has shown you a lot of heart.
00:59:06Riddick Bo went downstairs this time,
00:59:08maybe accidentally, maybe not.
00:59:12And Golada was right there on the belt line again.
00:59:14Mostly he's staying upstairs
00:59:16because it's so easy.
00:59:17He fires the left cross
00:59:18out of the south cross stance
00:59:20and then eats a jab
00:59:21and it snaps his head back.
00:59:23Again, it looks like Rocky in there.
00:59:2550% that pulls theended거
00:59:39head back.
00:59:46Golada does
00:59:46so much better
00:59:47when he throws little short punches
00:59:49without too much power on them.
00:59:51He never can miss.
00:59:51but when he throws the big shots,
00:59:53he seems to miss and give Bowe more courage.
00:59:55He's doing some damage out of that southpaw stance, George.
00:59:58He's landed the left cross twice out of the southpaw stance.
01:00:01Now, as he sets the punt, Riddick Bowe gets in a couple.
01:00:04Let me go, let me go.
01:00:06Let me go, let me go. Stop, stop, stop.
01:00:11The referee is looking really good at Riddick Bowe now.
01:00:17Remember, Riddick Bowe had three hard fights
01:00:20against Evander Holyfield.
01:00:22He's had other fights that he won
01:00:24in which he absorbed a lot of punishment.
01:00:27Sometimes a fighter is old when he's 29.
01:00:30Well, if you're in Bowe's camp
01:00:32and you're looking for some sign of encouragement, here it is.
01:00:35Bowe's gone more than eight rounds four times in his career.
01:00:38Galata only once, and Galata has in the past
01:00:41shown a tendency to tire down the stretch.
01:00:43Tell him! He doesn't have his wall!
01:00:46If you're going through your nose, you'll blow it out your mouth.
01:00:48Come on. Fill up your lungs.
01:00:49Get your arms down off the rope!
01:00:52Get your arms down off the rope!
01:00:54Okay, okay.
01:00:55Well, this guy's dead tired,
01:00:57but you've got to show me something, okay?
01:00:59Take a deep breath. Give me a deep breath.
01:01:00I'm down, man. Relax.
01:01:01Give me a deep breath.
01:01:03Let's see more double jabs.
01:01:04Good, strong.
01:01:05You've got to step into him.
01:01:06You can't lay it in.
01:01:08Step in with your jab.
01:01:09Right hand behind him.
01:01:10There's a ninth round coming up.
01:01:12We've got two rounds.
01:01:14You've got to pick it up now.
01:01:15You've got to snap your jab.
01:01:17Let me see that strength you've got now.
01:01:18You're in a second.
01:01:19And just with the left hand.
01:01:20Okay?
01:01:22Let's go.
01:01:23Hands up!
01:01:26There's Rock Newman, Bo's manager.
01:01:28Seated in the second row.
01:01:30Pretty close to ringside.
01:01:31Trying to get some signals to Riddick
01:01:32through some of the delays earlier in the fight.
01:01:35Now just watching and hoping.
01:01:37White that corner up!
01:01:39Get the white that corner up!
01:01:40Round nine of a scheduled ten.
01:01:42Less than six minutes to go.
01:01:44It's been an unbelievable war.
01:01:48Riddick Bo's body seems to have been the only thing that's whipping him.
01:01:51This body just doesn't know how to control this 235-pound.
01:01:55Bo's still got some quickness.
01:01:57Yeah, but he's knocking himself out with those big right hands when he misses.
01:02:04What a job Joe Sousa has done with Galada's two cuts.
01:02:08If Andrew wins the fight, Sousa's one of the heroes.
01:02:13Now Galada goes to war in the corner just above us.
01:02:16Trying to put Bo in George Foreman's lap.
01:02:20He almost did.
01:02:25Galada's doing right to measure Riddick Bo.
01:02:27Don't try to...
01:02:28This is right hand.
01:02:29Don't try to blow with one shot.
01:02:30Do it with an accumulation of little shots.
01:02:32Problem is he can't go to the body, George.
01:02:34He doesn't dare.
01:02:36Galada slips as he tries to throw there.
01:02:38And just pops Bo with a couple little shots inside.
01:02:42And lands another solid right.
01:02:50And Riddick Bo shows unbelievable guts.
01:03:03Good body punch.
01:03:05Now that was not low and it hurt Riddick Bo.
01:03:10Counter right landed for Bo.
01:03:12And Galada backs up and stopped punting.
01:03:14Still more than a minute to go in the night.
01:03:19Trouble for Bo now.
01:03:20If he somehow manages to hurt Galada,
01:03:22he might not even know it.
01:03:28This is one of those fights that speaks for itself.
01:03:32Now the blood streaming from the cut above Galada's left eye.
01:03:36Galada got hurt that time.
01:03:38Riddick Bo doesn't even seem to know it.
01:03:41It would be interesting to see if Bell Torrance
01:03:43would stop it after this round
01:03:44or if he'll let his man go out for the 10th.
01:03:47Bo hasn't shown much in this particular round.
01:03:50When you get to this point of a fight,
01:03:53it's not about what you see outside.
01:03:55It's about what they have inside.
01:03:58The referee is deciding not to even bring in
01:04:00those low shots now.
01:04:01He's not even talking about them.
01:04:03He's allowing them to throw low
01:04:05if they happen to do it.
01:04:07Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.
01:04:10Two exhausted warriors.
01:04:13Bloody, sweaty, hurt.
01:04:17What else is there, George?
01:04:19Boy, this is the pain.
01:04:21Semi-conscious.
01:04:23Low blows, and down goes Bo again.
01:04:25Yeah, that's it.
01:04:27And Cotton is not thinking disqualification.
01:04:33He's calling the fight over.
01:04:35He's calling the disqualification.
01:04:38He's disqualified Galata again.
01:04:41I...
01:04:41That's right.
01:04:43That's right.
01:04:46That's right.
01:04:47No, no, he's deducting points.
01:04:48He didn't stop the fight.
01:04:50He's deducting points.
01:04:51Larry Hazard came into the ring
01:04:53and told Cotton to take a point.
01:04:55What's going on here?
01:04:57Well, they might think that's the end of the fight.
01:04:59He disqualified.
01:05:00He did disqualify him.
01:05:01The fight is over.
01:05:03Another disqualification.
01:05:06And it's right.
01:05:06This guy didn't have to go down there,
01:05:08and you can't protect where he's hitting.
01:05:10He's hitting beside that cup.
01:05:12The cup is not protecting the way he's throwing.
01:05:14I think this fight might knock out both fighters.
01:05:18Unbelievable.
01:05:19Galata whipped Riddick Boll just
01:05:21this time hands down.
01:05:22Why do you have to go down?
01:05:24Why do you have to hit?
01:05:24He can't stop himself.
01:05:26No, he couldn't stop.
01:05:26That's not deliberate, George.
01:05:28It was deliberate, Larry.
01:05:29No, I don't believe that for a moment.
01:05:30I don't believe it for a moment.
01:05:32I just think...
01:05:33His corner told him,
01:05:33don't go to the body anymore.
01:05:35And he couldn't...
01:05:36So why do you go to the body
01:05:37unless you're deliberately trying to do something?
01:05:38He's because he's hurt,
01:05:39and he can't think.
01:05:40Biting on his head.
01:05:41He's trying to punch.
01:05:42Yeah, but you're going to have to think about that
01:05:43when the referee's won you several times.
01:05:45Very good.
01:05:46Eddie?
01:05:47Riddick Boll got whipped.
01:05:52You're here to interrupt the news.
01:05:54Galata didn't get the same patience
01:05:55out of Wayne Kelly...
01:05:56or out of Eddie Cotton
01:05:57that he got out of Wayne Kelly in New York.
01:05:59Look at that.
01:06:00Over and over.
01:06:01And, Larry, you can't say these are accidents.
01:06:03You just got to forget that.
01:06:04You're here to enforce the rules.
01:06:06You don't have to say...
01:06:07One, two...
01:06:08You warned them.
01:06:09One shot is an accident.
01:06:10Two...
01:06:11He butted them with his head.
01:06:12And the referee tried his best
01:06:13not to call a few of them early on.
01:06:15He butted them with his head.
01:06:16And he says, hey, the guy was...
01:06:18You're not...
01:06:19You're not...
01:06:19You're not...
01:06:20You're not...
01:06:23You're not...
01:06:23Galata may be the best fighter
01:06:25in the world today
01:06:26who can't win a fight on his...
01:06:27He'd beat Riddick Boll,
01:06:29and I believe he'd whip any fighter
01:06:30if he's given an opportunity in the ring.
01:06:32Harold Letterman in New York,
01:06:34Wayne Kelly elected to warn twice,
01:06:36took three points away,
01:06:37and finally disqualified Galata
01:06:39on the sixth citation for low blows.
01:06:41What happened here?
01:06:42Jim, let me tell you something.
01:06:43Eddie Cotton disqualified Andrew Galata
01:06:46after he took away the third point.
01:06:48The same as Wayne Kelly did.
01:06:51And I told you it was going to happen
01:06:52after he took away the second point.
01:06:54Referees will go three points,
01:06:56and you're out of there.
01:06:57And it's all there is to it.
01:06:59He took away a point in round two
01:07:01from Andrew Galata for a headbutt.
01:07:03He took a point away in round four
01:07:05for a low blow.
01:07:06He took a point away in round nine
01:07:08for a low blow,
01:07:09and Andrew Galata is out of there.
01:07:12Referees will not generally go
01:07:13beyond three points deducted.
01:07:16So the deducted point for the headbutt
01:07:18figures into the disqualification
01:07:20for low blow.
01:07:20Three points were deducted.
01:07:22All right, let's go to Michael Buffer.
01:07:23Calls a halt to the bout.
01:07:26It ends at 2.58 of round number nine.
01:07:29The winner by disqualification,
01:07:33Riddick Big Daddy Boe.
01:07:45Once again, the referee had to call
01:07:48a disqualification of this bout
01:07:50after repeated low blows.
01:07:532.58, round number nine.
01:07:57Can you believe everything is nice?
01:07:59No one is getting excited.
01:08:01Rod Newman even behaved himself.
01:08:04Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.
01:08:06At this time, we do need to clear the aisle.
01:08:09Security please.
01:08:10And as doctors continue to look at Riddick Boe in the ring,
01:08:13after the fearsome beating he took for nine rounds,
01:08:16let's take a look back at this incredible war.
01:08:28In round four, Boe answered and put Galada on the canvas.
01:08:38And as Harold Letterman pointed out,
01:08:40there had already been penalty points assessed
01:08:42to Galada by this time.
01:08:43In round five, Galada put Boe down again.
01:08:47With this vicious assault against the ropes.
01:08:50But then couldn't finish him.
01:08:52And then the action at the end of the fight
01:08:54as a thoroughly beaten Boe was chased around the ring by Galada.
01:08:58Galada unable to curb his tendency to throw low blows there.
01:09:03The disqualification by referee Eddie Cotton
01:09:05working in his first match ever at this level of the sport.
01:09:10And quickly, let's look at what was on the three official scorecards
01:09:13at the time of the stoppage.
01:09:15You'll see eight rounds scored.
01:09:17And Galada led on all three cards.
01:09:2074, 72, 75, 73, 75, 71.
01:09:24So just as was the case in New York's Madison Square Garden
01:09:28last July 11, Andrew Galada was headed toward a clear victory
01:09:32over Riddick Boe and was properly disqualified
01:09:35for his absolutely inexplicable inability
01:09:39to stop throwing low blows.
01:09:42And they can't, I'm sorry, George, they can't all be intentional.
01:09:45No, no doubt about it.
01:09:47Galada could be probably one of the best young heavyweights
01:09:50I've seen in a lot of years.
01:09:51He has a world of talent.
01:09:52He's got the talent.
01:09:53He has a good left jab combination.
01:09:55Everything.
01:09:55What's going on in this guy's head?
01:09:57Why do you do things like this?
01:09:59I don't understand it.
01:10:00He could have won this fight hands down.
01:10:02Well, he comes from the mean streets of Warsaw,
01:10:04where he was, by his own admission, a rough-hewn street thug.
01:10:08He says that what he experienced there is every bit as tough and rough
01:10:11as anything that's experienced by inner-city ghetto products of the sport
01:10:15here in the United States.
01:10:16And he's got a mean streak, as you pointed out at the beginning of our telecast.
01:10:20And I don't think Lou Duval nor anyone else can control that,
01:10:23but it's going to take time and a little healing.
01:10:25I don't know what's wrong with this guy.
01:10:27Riddick Boe clearly was whipped from round to round.
01:10:30He fought a good fight, but let me tell you,
01:10:32Galato is the better man tonight.
01:10:34What about Boe's future?
01:10:35I mean, he gets another victory on his record,
01:10:37but he's now been thoroughly dominated twice
01:10:40by a guy who was a virtual unknown before July.
01:10:43Can Riddick still have a future near the top of the division?
01:10:46Riddick Boe is 29 years old.
01:10:48In the last couple of fights,
01:10:49he looked like he was 69 years old as a fighter.
01:10:52And I've seen a lot of 69-year-old guys in the gym
01:10:54look a lot better than Riddick Boe did tonight.
01:10:56Riddick Boe may have to think about career changes.
01:10:58I mean, serious career changes.
01:11:00He got hit a lot.
01:11:01Do you think the three vicious wars with Holyfield
01:11:03are part of the reason for the way Boe has decomposed?
01:11:07Yeah, just that something is missing.
01:11:08You lose a lot of weight, you get hit.
01:11:10You gain a lot of weight, you get hit.
01:11:12So there's no happy medium here.
01:11:14I think his trainer had the right idea when he said
01:11:18it could be a lost cause.
01:11:20Now, winning sometimes and getting beat like this
01:11:22is a loss anyway.
01:11:23So why do you keep doing it?
01:11:24I never thought I'd say something this weird again.
01:11:27Let's go up to Larry Merchant with the winner, Riddick Boe.
01:11:33All right.
01:11:34Thank you, guys.
01:11:36Riddick, this is almost a replay of what happened five months ago.
01:11:41You seem exhausted and beaten.
01:11:44How did you hold up against that barrage?
01:11:46Well, I wouldn't say I was beating.
01:11:48I was big, windy.
01:11:49But like always, I always thought I could get Gulotta.
01:11:51I mean, you look at it like this in this aspect.
01:11:53A lot of someone, you know, freshers and hasn't had many fights,
01:11:57so therefore, he don't get his time.
01:11:59But as soon as fatigue set in a little bit,
01:12:01everything started hitting me low.
01:12:04Were you aware from the previous deductions of points
01:12:09from Gulotta that if he did this one more time,
01:12:12that if you stayed out there long enough,
01:12:14something like this might happen?
01:12:15No, not at all.
01:12:17Actually, it never caught my mind
01:12:18because I was only the impression that now he would fight a different fight.
01:12:23The appearance was that you were taking a terrible beating
01:12:27or at least the worst beating we've seen you take before.
01:12:30What was it like in there for you?
01:12:32Well, to me, as always, I mean,
01:12:35a fight is a fight and we're in the business and we get hit.
01:12:38And I always have my family together
01:12:40and I just thought that it was a matter of time before
01:12:43I'd rather to come back and, you know, pretty much hit him or something
01:12:46and got him in trouble.
01:12:47Do you think he was in trouble at the end and exhausted
01:12:50and that's why he just didn't know what he was doing
01:12:52and is out of control?
01:12:53Well, I wouldn't say he don't know what he was doing,
01:12:55but I figured he was a little tired.
01:12:59After the first fight, your mother said,
01:13:00if that's all you can do, you ought to stop fighting again.
01:13:04Well, actually, I think I did a little better this time.
01:13:06You think you did better this time?
01:13:08Right.
01:13:08And you want to keep on fighting?
01:13:11I mean, if I can get a tired shot, then sure,
01:13:14but if not, then I mean, I'm going to try to get into what happens
01:13:16and if it don't work out, you know, according to plan,
01:13:19then I guess I'll give it up.
01:13:21He said, I ain't no dummy
01:13:22and I ain't going to allow these guys to hit me.
01:13:24So you feel that this was such a tough fight
01:13:28that you have to start thinking about this,
01:13:31about going out of boxing soon?
01:13:33Yes, this is true.
01:13:35Thank you very much, Riddick.
01:13:37But I ain't finished yet, man.
01:13:38I ain't finished talking.
01:13:39What else do you want to talk about?
01:13:40No, I think Galata gave a good kind of himself
01:13:43until he, you know, and, you know, I'll be back
01:13:45and I'm, you know, I'm not finished yet.
01:13:46Don't count me out.
01:13:47We'll see what happens next time.
01:13:49All right.
01:13:49Thank you very much, Riddick.
01:13:52Jim, back to you.
01:13:54And let's take a look at final punch stat numbers,
01:13:56which will again reflect Galata's thorough dominance.
01:13:59In the first of their two fights,
01:14:01he landed 100 punches more than Bo
01:14:03by punch stat computations.
01:14:05Tonight, he lands 192 more punches than Bo,
01:14:11throwing 162 more punches.
01:14:12He throws more jabs.
01:14:14He lands at a much higher rate
01:14:15and lands 50 more jabs than Bo.
01:14:19It was a complete and utter wipeout
01:14:22in favor of Galata
01:14:23until the second of his two disqualifications
01:14:27against Riddick Bowe.
01:14:28And now Larry Merchant is with the referee,
01:14:30Eddie Cotton, in the ring.
01:14:33All right, Jim.
01:14:34And I'm also here with Larry Hazard,
01:14:36the head of the New Jersey Commission.
01:14:38Eddie, did you disqualify Galata
01:14:42because that was the third time you took a point from him?
01:14:46No, I disqualified him
01:14:48because that was the most blatant of the fouls that he committed.
01:14:52We went over all of the rules in the dressing room
01:14:54with both fighters.
01:14:56Each camp knew exactly what I was expecting,
01:14:58a good, clean fight.
01:15:00I took a point away from Andrew for a low blow earlier
01:15:05and also took a point away for a headbutt.
01:15:07There were a couple other punches that were borderline relatively close
01:15:10that I probably could have taken another point.
01:15:12I wanted to give him an opportunity,
01:15:13but that was blatant, and I disqualified him.
01:15:17Did you ever get close to stopping the fight
01:15:20because of the battering Bo was taking?
01:15:23No.
01:15:24No.
01:15:25All right, Larry Hazard, quickly,
01:15:27from your point of view at ringside,
01:15:30do you think that everything was done
01:15:32according to the rules and properly?
01:15:34Not only were they done according to the rules and properly,
01:15:37I applaud the referee for the job that he did.
01:15:40Fortunately, I was a former referee,
01:15:41and I had the greatest confidence in this referee.
01:15:44We went into the dressing room.
01:15:46We went over the rules and regulations.
01:15:48He told them exactly what he expected,
01:15:51exactly what he would do, and he did that.
01:15:54I didn't see Gallardo complaining.
01:15:56I didn't see anyone in his corner complaining
01:15:58because they understood.
01:16:01I applaud what the referee did,
01:16:03and I stand behind his decision 100%.
01:16:05And I don't think you'll get any argument from anyone,
01:16:08including Andrew Gallardo.
01:16:10Jim?
01:16:12All right.
01:16:13Good job by the referee, George.
01:16:14Yeah, the referee did a fine job.
01:16:15As a matter of fact,
01:16:16he let Gallardo get away with a lot of things.
01:16:18A lot of referees would have stopped in earlier
01:16:20and tried to warn this guy of disqualifying him.
01:16:23He was more than fair.
01:16:24And if you're looking for a reason
01:16:26why Bowe winds up with another victory on his dossier,
01:16:29I guess you can chalk it up to courage or foolhardiness,
01:16:32whatever kept him going in there.
01:16:33I think the referee was not fair in saying
01:16:35that he did think about stopping the fight
01:16:37because Riddick Bowe was in trouble a lot of that fight,
01:16:40and I think he was watching him
01:16:41to see if he should stop the fight.
01:16:43He didn't admit that, though.
01:16:45Ironically, Bell Torrance, the trainer in Bowe's corner,
01:16:48you heard him say to Riddick,
01:16:49you don't show me something in the next round,
01:16:51I'm going to stop it myself.
01:16:52Well, what if Torrance had?
01:16:54Then we wouldn't be talking about this.
01:16:56It's pretty amazing.
01:16:57Andrew Gallardo went to his locker room.
01:17:00Who knows what we would have learned
01:17:02from an interview with Gallardo.
01:17:03He speaks four languages
01:17:04but uses equally few words in all four.
01:17:08Larry Merchant now joins us back at ringside
01:17:10from his work in the ring
01:17:12and your final take on this equally bizarre evening,
01:17:16Bowe Gallardo II.
01:17:17Well, as Yogi Berra said,
01:17:19it's deja vu all over again.
01:17:23When you go back looking at a past fight
01:17:25and you say what could happen, what might happen,
01:17:27I suspect if they had a third fight,
01:17:30something like this would happen again.
01:17:32But I do think that Riddick Bowe
01:17:35has lost both of these fights in the ring
01:17:39and that he has gotten the victories, rightly so.
01:17:43But I think that his stature
01:17:45as the best heavyweight out there
01:17:48has been sorely damaged.
01:17:50And I think that all the punishment he took,
01:17:53they have to think seriously
01:17:55about when or whether he should come back again.
01:17:59What about Gallardo?
01:18:00Do you see any hope that he can ever learn
01:18:01not to throw low blows?
01:18:04I don't know how to answer it
01:18:06because I don't know any precedent for this.
01:18:07And this, and I think part of it is
01:18:10he wants to retaliate.
01:18:12There's an intuitive thing in him,
01:18:15trigger in him that wants to retaliate
01:18:17when he gets hit
01:18:18and he loses some control.
01:18:20I don't think, I mean,
01:18:22he would have to be the dumbest guy on the planet
01:18:26to throw a low blow in that situation deliberately.
01:18:30I don't think he is.
01:18:31Yeah, an immense, immense man,
01:18:34an immense boxing talent
01:18:35with obviously immense problems.
01:18:38Well, Nick, you said it at the beginning of the evening,
01:18:41theater of the unexpected.
01:18:42Just when you think you've seen it all,
01:18:44you haven't.
01:18:46Jim Lampley, sometimes it's the theater of the absurd.
01:18:50Andrew Gulotta had it made, as you said,
01:18:52you and Larry and George,
01:18:54and Riddick Bowe knew he was in the fight of his life
01:18:56and he was being overwhelmed.
01:18:58That is the truth this night.
01:18:59But Gulotta, like an addict,
01:19:01could not help himself.
