Seth and Sean discuss Derek Stingley Jr and Danielle Hunter's incredible performances in the win over the Jaguars on Sunday.
Transcript
00:00You know, Seth, Stingley has some of these picks where, in the moment, you watch it and you go,
00:06that's one of the greatest interceptions I've ever seen.
00:09That one was the one against Trevor Lawrence and the Jags on Sunday.
00:15That was one where you needed to see the replay to appreciate how ungodly good that pick was,
00:24how ridiculously talented Derek Stingley Jr. is.
00:27Because to the naked eye, you couldn't, at least I couldn't, tell, like, wow.
00:32Not only was it a one-handed interception, it was like a one-handed that,
00:35it felt like gravity was going to prevent that one-handed catch from happening.
00:39The impressive part about that is, you know, talk about the modern gloves all you want.
00:44It's the physics of it, of having soft enough hands that you can just throw your hand out there
00:50and keep the ball from just caroming off your hand.
00:54Yes.
00:54You know, to have a soft one hand.
00:56You can stop it.
00:57On a throw that's a line drive.
00:59Yep.
00:59It's not a deep ball or anything like that.
01:04Like, he just had to really just stick his hand out there.
01:06And like you said yesterday, 99% of the time, that's a pass breakup.
01:10Yeah.
01:11And a good play.
01:12Yeah.
01:13It's a pass defense, but that's it.
01:15It was just how, I don't want to say effortlessly,
01:18but just how smooth and comfortable he was grabbing it and pulling it in.
01:22And the other part of that, too, and as you and I have had both had an appetite for just going in
01:28and, you know, soaking up the tears of Jaguars fans this week.
01:32Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:32That is very polarizing.
01:34That throw itself is very polarizing because the people who want to defend Trevor Lawrence are saying,
01:38well, it was just an incredible play by Derek Stingley.
01:41The other people are saying, are you watching the receivers slow down to come back for the ball?
01:48Yeah.
01:48That it was.
01:52Yes, most defensive backs don't make the play,
01:55but the only reason that Derek Stingley doesn't make the play or can make the play is because it wasn't a perfect ball.
02:01Yeah.
02:01So the other thing, too, is John Harris, I think it was John Harris telling this.
02:05Yeah, because John Harris talked to Derek Stingley after the game about that interception.
02:09And, of course, the first thing Stingley talks about is, no, he should have had that other one.
02:13Yep.
02:13They let go through his hands.
02:14Yep.
02:15That was the biggest stroke of luck the Jaguars had that day was that Derek Stingley didn't make that one interception
02:19on the really stupid throw by Trevor Lawrence.
02:21And that's classic Stingley, right?
02:23I mean, like, hey, what did you think of that great pick you had?
02:25He's like, yeah, can we talk about the one I didn't get?
02:29D'Amico was asked on his coach's show earlier this week,
02:32was that the best Derek Stingley Jr. interception that you've seen?
02:36Wow.
02:36Man, I put that one, I mean, that was probably the best catch, just one hit.
02:42Like, that was probably the best catch of the interception I've seen him.
02:45That and the Denver one, like, over, he always catches the ball like that.
02:49I think that was the best catch he had yesterday, the one-handed.
02:53But to me, the one that I love the most is the Miami one because it just, to end the game,
02:59like, they're trying to come back on our sidelines, just him going up, making that play.
03:03I was just, I was losing my mind on that one.
03:06That was an insane play, just when it happened, the critical moment in the game.
03:11And that other one has the benefit of me knowing that that was versus Odell Beckham Jr.
03:16Or, I mean, versus Tyreek Hill.
03:17Tyreek Hill, yeah.
03:18Compared to the nameless Jags receiver.
03:21Yeah, yeah.
03:21Johnny, if they kept playing that cut, because I watched the whole interview with D'Amico,
03:25and Johnny pointed that out, Harris, right after.
03:27He's like, yeah, he was running stride for stride with the Cheetah.
03:30Also, in that play, would like the one that directly ended a game that got him a win, too.
03:37You know, like, what was the...
03:38Yeah, I mean, it depends on how you're grading it.
03:40The physical impressiveness of it, the unlikelihood of it, or just the actual game situation.
03:45The Denver one was the one two years ago that I think they're talking about,
03:49where he tracked the ball all the way across the field, and, like, hands way out in front,
03:54diving catch.
03:55It was, yeah, he's something else, man, Derrick Stingley Jr.
03:59As long as we're talking about defensive...
04:00He is.
04:01Well, Derrick Stingley Jr. is the classic guy that, all right, if he wanted to do what
04:06Travis Hunter wants to do, and play both ways, I think Stingley is maybe more suited to it.
04:12Yeah.
04:12The biggest problem would be, though, that Derrick Stingley's also got a history of injuries.
04:16Right.
04:17Like, Travis Hunter already does.
04:18The same take would apply.
04:20Travis Hunter has already missed time now.
04:22He's on IR right now.
04:23He had to miss time during training camp with an injury, and he's tiny.
04:26Yeah.
04:27Like, he's not going to...
04:28He is not going to redefine or reinvent the game of football.
04:30It ain't happening.
04:30I know it's early in his career, but it ain't happening.
04:33Nope.
04:34Ain't happening.
04:34And we called it.
04:35It ain't happening.
04:36We actually asked...
04:37We had Nico on the post-game show, Nico Collins, who also had an incredible one-handed catch
04:41in that game on the two-point conversion.
04:44Somebody asked us that on the text page.
04:45Who had the better one-handed catch on Sunday?
04:47Stingley or Nico Collins on the two-point conversion?
04:50We talked about it with Nico a little bit.
04:52But I think Nico's was harder because he had to get his feet down also at the same time
04:58and get inside the pylon.
05:00There was a lot going on in a fraction of a second.
05:02They were both incredible, and I can't believe they happened in the same game.
05:05And they were both super...
05:07They both directly affected the score because Nico's was a two-point pick.
05:13Cam Little's going to get a look at a field goal there at the end of the half.
05:15Saved three points at the end of the half.
05:18Stingley did.
05:18So, Nico on his coach's show was also asked about the Neil Hunter's performance.
05:23I think when we get...
05:25Usually when we get off the air, Seth, on Wednesday at 10 o'clock is when the players of the week
05:28come out.
05:29I think the Neil Hunter's going to be the AFC defensive player of the week.
05:32If I had to guess, three and a half sacks in a comeback...
05:34Yeah, three and a half sacks in that game, especially.
05:36And two of the sacks were in the fourth quarter.
05:38Right.
05:38And a tackle for a loss in the fourth quarter.
05:41That's right.
05:41That's right.
05:42Yeah.
05:42I mean, he single-handedly stopped that one drive, basically.
05:45Bingo.
05:46Yeah.
05:46He was fantastic when they needed it most.
05:49Bunch of crooked numbers in the box score.
05:51How good was Neil Hunter, coach?
05:53Yeah.
05:54It's, I mean, one of the best games I've seen him play.
05:56Incredible.
05:57You know, since he's been a Texan, it started for me in the run game.
06:01When I saw the way he was setting the edge in a run game, like, that's what sparked it
06:05for me.
06:05And then when he was rushing, like, he was getting off the ball.
06:09He was playing explosive, violent, and the tackle had no chance.
06:13Yeah.
06:13And so, you know, for him to get the plays he made, I mean, also he had one, he had a
06:18two-play sequence late in the game where he goes underneath the tackle, gets a tackle
06:21for loss, and then he gets a huge sack.
06:24Yeah.
06:24Mark talks about that a lot.
06:25And it's, that was such a huge two-play sequence in the game to knock them back.
06:30Man, it was, it was big, man.
06:32Daniil, he's outstanding.
06:33We challenged him all week, right, to really crush the pocket, and he did that.
06:39Yeah, that sequence, they reiterated what you just said there, Seth, that TFL and that
06:43sack back-to-back.
06:44Man, games like this are so much more fun.
06:47There's so many heroes in a game like this, you know?
06:49Well, it's funny.
06:49You know, it is.
06:51Even as we're going, all right.
06:53The importance of just having players like Nico Collins and Derek Singley and Will Anderson
06:58and Daniil Hunter.
06:59The Jags aren't a great team or anything, but in that game, there's no way you're making
07:06that comeback if you don't have all of those things.
07:10Yeah.
07:10If you don't have those guys making those plays, those very, very unlikely plays.
07:14And, you know, Davis Mills doesn't have the game he has without, you know, Nico Collins.
07:20Like, Nico, that's a, I guess that's a, when people are trying to start, I predicted it.
07:25It's this point in the week where you're starting to hear people make the argument that, no,
07:29Davis Mills should be the starter instead of C.J.
07:32Stroud.
07:32Um, and, uh, especially people that didn't actually watch the game will look at Nico
07:36Collins' numbers, uh, compared to the other games he's played this year.
07:39And they don't realize that a big chunk of those numbers came on that meaningless play
07:44at the end of the first half.
07:4554 yards.
07:46Yeah.
07:46Yeah.
07:47That was 54.
07:48But it was still one of the better, even without that 54 yards is one of Nico's better performances
07:52this year.
07:53No doubt.
07:53Um, I think that there were a lot of things that happened in that game where it just, it
07:58felt like a complete and total team victory.
08:00That's what I liked about it.
08:01Yep.
