00:00All right, so there were, in the fourth quarter, Davis Mills, we know, is outstanding in the fourth quarter of this game.
00:05There were multiple times, Seth, that I'm sitting up there in the press box with you and Reggie, a few others,
00:11and I'm looking at this and I'm going, okay, the season is over if they don't make a play right here.
00:16There were five of them for me that really stood out with Davis Mills.
00:20The very first one was, by yardage, the shortest out of all of them,
00:25but the Texans had been on a drive that started at the end of the third quarter,
00:29carried into the fourth quarter.
00:31This was the drive that made the score 29-18.
00:35It was 29-10.
00:37They have a fourth and two.
00:39It was third and two at the Jags' 17-yard line.
00:42They don't convert there.
00:44It's fourth and two.
00:45There's 13 minutes left in the game, and I looked on the ESPN.com.
00:49They had a 1.6% win probability at that point.
00:54Maxville territory, fourth and two, and I remember saying to you, they've got to get this here.
00:59The game's over.
01:00You've got to get the ball back three times now instead of two if you don't get it here.
01:03And I think Reggie thought I was insane for even entertaining the possibility of that.
01:07Yeah, that's exactly what they got down here.
01:10That's what I said.
01:11Well, they've got a chance to make this a football game at least.
01:13If they score here.
01:14I didn't believe it.
01:15Yeah, right, right, right.
01:16They had a 2% chance of making this a game.
01:21Yeah, 1.6% win probability, but they convert the fourth down.
01:25And here's what it sounded like.
01:26Knoll out to the short side left as they break the huddle.
01:29Niko to the right with Higgins stacked.
01:32Fourth and two at the Jags, 17 Mills under center, marks in the backfield.
01:36Here's Knoll in motion to the right.
01:37Mills takes the give.
01:38Throws right side.
01:39Knoll has the first pass.
01:40Steps to the bounds at the 12-yard line.
01:42The rookie does it again.
01:44Makes another play for his Texans.
01:48Wide open.
01:49Yeah, and the reason it was wild, we talked about earlier with some of the motion that
01:53they'd been using in that game.
01:55Jalen Knoll's out to the left, and he does a little whipsaw motion where he comes to his
01:59right, stops, goes to his left, and you can see the linebackers in the secondary trying
02:06to swap responsibilities and sort out all of that as it's happening.
02:10Meanwhile, the Jaguars have a blitz coming, so they've got a free runner in Davis Mills'
02:15face, but the pre-snap motion is what created that confusion in the secondary, and you end
02:21up with Jalen Knoll wide open.
02:22So that's credit to Nick Kaley and Jalen Knoll and Davis Mills for pulling that off,
02:27but they schemed that.
02:29They schemed that.
02:30That wasn't just a simple mental error by the Jaguars, a really confusing motion to
02:36get him open there.
02:37That is, and it was wide open, and I would say if Mills puts it on him a little bit more,
02:41he might have been able to turn upfield.
02:42There's that much room there.
02:43Yeah, he kind of turned that wide open pass into like a toe tap.
02:47Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:48Sometimes like a toe tapper with 10 yards of margin.
02:50All's well that ends well, but yeah, yeah.
02:52So that was the first one.
02:54You don't convert on that fourth down.
02:55The Jags get the ball back, and you need to get the ball back three times in order to
03:01keep the season alive.
03:03So they convert there, and then on that same drive, so they get the ball down to the 12.
03:07They miss out on first and 10, second and 10.
03:12That might have been the series, too.
03:14I can't remember if it was that one or the Schultz touchdown where it looked like Nico
03:17might have gotten interfered with on second down in the end zone.
03:20That might have been the Schultz touchdown.
03:22At any rate, third and 10.
03:24Oh, no, it was a missed.
03:26Yeah, I know which one you're talking about.
03:28Third and 10, Jags 12.
03:30Now there's about 12 and a half minutes to go.
03:32So 2.1% win probability at this point, Seth, so their chances of winning the game have gone
03:37all the way from 1.6% to 2.1%.
03:41But it's third down, and you've got 10 yards to go, and Mills came up big.
03:45Here's the Jaden Higgins touchdown.
03:46Third down and 10 at the Jaguars, 12.
03:49Higgins in motion to the left.
03:50Mills with a gun.
03:51Marks to his right.
03:52Nico Collins, short side right.
03:53Davis Mills awaits the snap.
03:55Here it is.
03:56Mills in the pocket.
03:57Mills to the end zone.
03:59Caught.
03:59Touchdown, Jaden Higgins.
04:01The Texans score.
04:08And Jaden Higgins scores the touchdown there, and they get the touchdown.
04:14Go for two.
04:15Nico makes probably one of the catches of the year that won't show up on the grid anywhere
04:20because it was a two-point conversion.
04:21It wasn't part of his receiving stats or anything.
04:24And every point was big at that point in the game.
04:26You know, that made it a game where you were still keeping the field goal in play.
04:29It was an 11-point game at that point.
04:32Yeah, and it was – this was just a great throw by Davis Mills.
04:36They had a route combination to the left that just got Higgins, you know,
04:42open long enough in that window and it was just a well-executed play.
04:47Yep.
04:47Third and 10, and they execute and they get the touchdown.
04:49All right, so the Texans' defense comes up big.
04:53They get the ball back, and they go on their next touchdown drive.
04:58Got down inside the Jacksonville 10-yard line.
05:01Third and three at the Jacksonville 7.
05:03You needed everything to still be going right at this point.
05:08There's seven and a half minutes left in the game.
05:10So, again, you're down here.
05:11I suppose you could have kicked the field goal.
05:13You're down 11.
05:14So, you were bound to make it a one-score game.
05:16But the fact that you could apply true – the fact that you were – that you got a touchdown here
05:22and you weren't having to make a two-point conversion just to tie the game a little bit later was big.
05:28Dalton Schultz scores the touchdown toe-tapper in the back of the end zone.
05:31One back.
05:31Woody Marks on third and three at the Jacksonville 7.
05:34Mills awaits the snap from Andrews.
05:37Here it is.
05:38Davis looking.
05:39Davis with time.
05:40Davis pumps.
05:41Davis throws.
05:42Right side.
05:43Back at the end zone.
05:44Caught.
05:45Touchdown.
05:45Dalton Schultz rock and roll.
05:49Back-to-back drives with touchdowns.
05:53Mills with it a score.
05:59That was a hell of a catch by Dalton Schultz.
06:01And Schultz had to deal with a lot of traffic.
06:04First in releasing – he was trying to release.
06:07He got hung up by the defensive end.
06:09It was slanting across his face.
06:11And then he actually got – there probably should have been a defensive holding flag on this play before he came clear.
06:18Maybe they would have thrown it if he hadn't caught the touchdown.
06:21But that was like a muddy, murky path for him to get there.
06:26And the fact that Mills was – Mills got good protection.
06:30It was just a four-man rush.
06:32But Mills just dialed up a great throw there high in the end zone.
06:37The pass protection was really good on that.
06:39He did – at the very end, Mills had some pressure in his face as he threw it.
06:43Yeah.
06:43It was a great throw, great catch.
06:45But this was – that made it 29-24.
06:48The Texans fail on the two-point conversion.
06:50So they trail by five.
06:51They know they're going to need a touchdown in order to win the game.
06:54The field goal is out of play at this point.
06:56But I'll be honest with you, Seth.
06:57And I know Davis Mills has had some good moments as a Texans quarterback.
07:00His record going into that game yesterday was 5-19-1 as a starter, though.
07:04We're just not used to seeing Davis Mills come up big in this many situations as he did in the fourth quarter of this game.
07:11And I remember you and I talking during this final drive that's coming up here
07:14and us thinking to ourselves, okay, the lights are on now, Davis.
07:18You know, 29-10, maybe the Jags are in pre-event a little bit.
07:21They're content giving up some yardage and burning some clock.
07:24We see teams do that all the time that are up three scores.
07:27It's just the Texans kept converting and getting some chunk plays and running the football and things like that.
07:3129-24, 7-yard line.
07:35Okay, now the spotlight is on.
07:37Let's see, Davis, if you can keep doing this.
07:39This might be the play ultimately for me that might have saved the season.
07:42There are six minutes left in the game.
07:45So theoretically the Texans could have gotten the ball back another time to try to go take the lead.
07:50But at their own seven, it's third and ten.
07:54And Davis Mills comes up with a huge play to Dalton Schultz.
07:57Third and ten for the Houston seven.
07:58One back marks.
07:59Mills in the gun.
08:00Three receivers left.
08:01Nico short side right.
08:03Davis standing in his end zone after the snap.
08:05Throws right side.
08:05Caught.
08:06Schultz.
08:0620-25 right side.
08:08And down across the 28-yard line.
08:11First down.
08:11Houston.
08:13Winger gets there along with the Lewickon.
08:15But not until Schultz moves the sticks.
08:1820-yard throw from Mills to Dalton.
08:22That would go on to be a 14-play drive.
08:24Right.
08:25That burned off almost the rest of the clock.
08:27Two of those drives.
08:28What was it?
08:28A 12-play drive, a 6-play drive, and a 14-play drive.
08:32That's right.
08:32That's something that's just been few and far between in the fourth quarter versus teams.
08:36And the great thing about this play was Woody Marks came up and attacked the blitzing linebacker in pass protection.
08:44Ariante Urseri didn't have an awesome snap versus Josh Hines-Allen.
08:48But in comparison to the fourth quarter last time where, you know, C.J. Stroud was having his arm hacked as he threw the final interception.
08:57Davis Mills got the ball off just in time.
08:59And Ariante Urseri held Josh Hines-Allen off just long enough for Davis Mills to complete this.
09:05But then also I think it was the communication or the relationship between Davis Mills and Dalton Schultz.
09:11And Dalton Schultz ago when he faced the linebacker and covered John, I mean, those two, Davis Mills and Dalton Schultz, were just on the same page.
09:22So it was just real, like, very, very – I think Dalton Schultz, you know, Dalton Schultz had talked in the pregame interview about him and Davis Mills working together all the time and having this relationship already.
09:32But then this week especially really amping that up.
09:35And that very much looked the case.
09:37That he – Dalton Schultz and Davis Mills were very much on the same page in this game.
09:41Davis Mills made that throw that we're talking about right here and that you're looking at on your computer.
09:45He made that look way easier than it is.
09:47Right, yeah.
09:48I mean, he's throwing – he's gotten – he's pushed over to the left hash a little bit here.
09:52And he's having to throw across a defender who might could step in that passing lane right there.
09:57I mean, he put it – he placed it perfectly, you know, out where only Dalton could get that ball.
10:02Like, that was a – you know, a little pressure coming in on him.
10:05Yeah, he had the backer coming up.
10:07Woody Marks got a piece of the backer, but the backer came off of him and it was in Dalton Schultz – in Davis Mills' face as Josh Hines Allen actually got Davis Mills to the ground after that throw.
10:18So, it was – yeah, it was a 16th of a second before it could have been a second.
10:23Could have been a safety in the end zone.
10:24Yeah, it could have been a safety.
10:25And then that's two points.
10:27Now it's a seven-point game and you're giving the ball back to him.
10:30Instead, it's a first down and the Texans would go on to grind the clock down under a minute.
10:36And then the Texans got down – boy, that pass interference call puts him at the two-yard line.
10:41Woody Marks scores the touchdown, but it gets nullified due to a false start on Trent Brown.
10:47So, you're going, okay, well, this is where Davis Mills being cursed as a starter for the Texans.
10:55In goal to go, finally when they're scoring down inside the 10-yard line, here we go.
11:00And it's a false start on Trent Brown and then a false start on Ariante Urseri.
11:05And it pushes the ball back to the 14-yard line.
11:08Third and goal from the 14.
11:10So, you've got to score on one of these next two plays because you're under a minute.
11:14You've committed to this drive being the game-winning drive.
11:17You know, they were not going hurry up and saying, well, if we don't score, at least we're going to leave our side.
11:21It was going to be you either win on this drive or you lose the game.
11:23You and I had that discussion at the beginning of the drive.
11:26We're like, okay, well, they're running the ball a fair amount.
11:28This isn't – you know, they're definitely not hedging their bets here.
11:31This is it.
11:31And saying, okay, maybe we just get into field goal range, kick a field goal, try to get the ball back.
11:37They're just – they're going to try to grind the clock down.
11:39That's right.
11:39And they did.
11:40They did a successful job of that.
11:41The problem is they got those two false start penalties.
11:44So what do you do on third and goal from the 14-yard line with under a minute to go?
11:49You do this.
11:5037 seconds to go.
11:5229-24.
11:53Texans trailing third and goal at the 14.
11:57Mills, shotgun, marks to his left, two receivers, wide side right.
12:01Here's the snap.
12:02Davis looking.
12:03Davis stepping to his left.
12:04Davis on the run.
12:0510.
12:05Davis 5.
12:06Davis to the corner.
12:08Davis!
12:08Touchdown, Houston!
12:12The Texans take the lead on the Mills scramble.
12:15Amazing!
12:17D Mills gets it done.
12:1930 seconds to go, and Houston leads by one.
12:25I love Mark Vandermeer screaming Davis' name like he just lit the carpet on fire in the living room or something.
12:31Davis!
12:31Look, and this is, you know, last week when Mills was thrown in in the middle of the game,
12:40and he looked kind of unprepared for some of the things he was seeing defensively.
12:44One of the things that he could have been doing when he was only getting a three-man rush or less of a pass rush,
12:52he could have pulled the ball and run, and he did just that.
12:54I wonder if they said that to him this week.
12:56Yeah, I know, and I think D'Amico had mentioned that at some point this week.
13:00He did, he did, you're right, using his legs.
13:01To encourage him to run, use his legs in those situations.
13:03Yeah!
13:04Especially last week when the defense was dropping eight guys into coverage,
13:07and there's just simply nobody available.
13:08Take the easy yardage.
13:09You talked about it earlier on this play, though.
13:11The thing that didn't get mentioned on that play, and I'm not blaming Mark for not mentioning it,
13:15he's calling what he's seeing with Davis.
13:17But when you go back and watch the play, man, the box-out that Woody Marks had in the goal line.
13:21Yeah, on Devin Lloyd.
13:22Yes.
13:23So Woody Marks turned back, saw that Mills was scrambling, and he started kind of running.
13:29He started extending his route, which helped clear the Devin Lloyd who was covering him
13:34a little further downfield, and then he turned around and boxed out
13:37and gave Davis Mills just the right window he needed.
13:41And Davis Mills, I'm going to give lots of credit to quarterbacks now
13:44whenever they don't take a hit when diving or anything.
13:47He did a good job of protecting himself on that one.
13:49Protecting himself and getting inside the pylon at the same time.
13:51You know, that was a – and somebody snapped a picture of it down, like, behind the pylon there,
13:57and it's just – it's a great shot of Davis just got that ball tucked up against his chest
14:01and just sliding in, man.
14:03Like, it was a hell of a play.
14:04Here's what Davis Mills said after the game.
14:06What did he see on that play?
14:08Yeah, I mean, that was – kind of had an interview right after the game.
14:14I remember calling a play that we had already called in the game.
14:17They kind of just sat back in zone coverage, and as I was getting through my progression,
14:23scrambling opened up kind of in the same direction as where Woody's check down was.
14:28And as I pushed up in the pocket, he ended up making a big-time block,
14:33and I was able to find a way in the end zone.
14:36I'm missing a hell of a radio show here.
14:37Yeah.
14:38I don't know if our listeners could hear that or not, but, yeah.
14:40They can hear it fine.
14:41Okay, they can.
14:42I think it's a connection with us.
14:43Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:44We'd have shut it down if they couldn't hear it.
14:45But, yeah, they can hear it fine.
14:46But Davis – yeah, Davis talking about what he saw right there.
14:49And uncharacteristically, Davis getting out of the pocket
14:53and getting the game-winning touchdown.
14:54My biggest takeaway with Davis Mills yesterday, Seth,
14:57is how big he came up in these situations.
15:00All three of the touchdowns in the fourth quarter of this game by the offense –
15:04of course, we know Sheldon Rankins had the one to close things out –
15:07all came on third down.
15:08Yeah.
15:08They all came on third down.
15:10And third and longs, too, at times.
15:12Yeah.
15:12Yeah, it was – there were some – there were just some –
15:15there were so many moments in that game where everything could have just gone awry
15:17and fallen apart.
15:18Great point.
15:19Four of those plays that we – four of those plays we just replayed right there
15:23were on third down, and two of them were third and ten,
15:26and one was third and goal from the 14.
15:27Yeah.
15:28Not easy situations.
15:29No, no, no.
15:30He was really, really good.
15:31You know, that – yesterday was – in that play specifically,
15:35it was one of the few times I can remember believing that Davis Mills ran a 4-5-40
15:40at his pro day or whatever it was.
15:42Yeah.
15:42It was – I'm like, all right.
15:43I don't remember really always seeing it all that much.
15:46Like, that felt like a COVID time.
15:48It'll be a 4-3 by this afternoon, I tell you.
15:50There's a janky supply chain issue.
15:52He stopped 2020, but, like, he looked – he looked genuinely fast.
15:59And he is – he is strong.
16:01There's some times in the pocket where he does a good job of shaking off contact
16:05and keeping a play a little – he still gets – he makes you nervous while he's doing it.
16:11He still – he doesn't –
16:12He took a beating his first two years in the league, and he never –
16:15I don't think he ever missed games due to injury.
16:17He missed games due to getting replaced by Kyle Allen.
16:19Did you see that high school picture they showed on the broadcast of him?
16:23Yes.
16:23It was next to Trevor Lawrence, too.
16:25I'm like, God, these are two of the least inspiring high school pictures I've ever seen.
16:30This was the class in Georgia that year?
16:32David Mills' neck.
16:35It was even longer back then.
16:37Well, because he's got that awkward high school look.
16:39He's the first kid that's ever had –
16:41He had to grow into his neck.
16:42Grow into his neck, exactly.
16:44Yeah, he didn't get all the way there.
16:45No.
16:46But he's still – you know, he's lucky he does his neck exercises
16:49because if that thing wasn't muscular, that would be a danger.
16:53He might have had his head lopped clean off at some point.
16:55Remember the Titans game last year at the end of the year where it was the meaningless game,
16:59so CJ played like two series, and Davis played most of the game,
17:02and it was a goal-to-go situation, and Davis went like up and over the pile
17:07and landed on his face.
17:08Yeah, yeah.
17:09And his body was perpendicular to the ground, but his face was smushed,
17:14and like, okay, it's a good thing that guy's got a – you know, got like a slinky neck there.
17:18You know?
17:19Yes.
17:19Yes.
17:19Yes.
17:19Yes.
17:19Yes.
17:19Yes.
17:19Yes.
17:19Yes.
17:19Yes.
17:19Yes.
17:19Yes.
17:20Yes.
17:20Yes.
17:20Yes.
17:21Yes.
17:21Yes.
17:22Yes.
17:23Yes.
17:23Yes.
17:24Yes.
17:25Yes.
17:26Yes.
17:27Yes.
17:28Yes.
17:29Yes.
17:31Yes.
17:33Yes.
17:33Yes.
17:35Yes.
17:35Yes.
17:35Yes.
17:37Yes.
17:37Yes.
17:37Yes.
