00:00Tutoring Gene on the Othello speech he had to do was a bit of a project.
00:07Catching him was hard. Finding the time to work on it was hard.
00:13But I did what I could. I explained it all to him, explained what he was saying,
00:18explained about the rhythm of the language, all of that.
00:22So the day we came to film that, I sat right under the camera where the director usually sat,
00:29and Gene came out. He did that speech like in a completely different voice.
00:38His language was perfect. Everything I had told him was there.
00:45I mean, I was astounded. Absolutely astounded.
00:52That handkerchief did an Egyptian to my mother give. She was a charmer and could almost read the thoughts of people.
01:01She told her while she kept it, it would make her amiable and subdue my father entirely to her love.
01:08But if she lost it, or made a gift of it, my father's eyes should hold her loathed,
01:17and his spirits would hunt after new fancies.
01:20She dying gave it me, and bid me when my fate would have me, wife, to give it her.
01:27I did so. And take heed on it. Make it a darling like your precious eye.
01:39But to lose it, or give it away, were such perdition as nothing else could match.
01:48That young man had talent beyond anything I could possibly explain to you.
01:58And I said to him, Gene, you could play that role someday.
02:04He says, what do you mean someday? Why not now?
02:07That was Gene.
02:09That was Gene.
