00:00The word for the day is pretentious.

00:08I was doing a play in New York, and it was a play by Arnold Wesker called The Old Ones,

00:15where I played a schoolteacher, and I had to talk to the audience as if they were a class.

00:20One, making claims explicit or implicit to some distinction, importance, dignity, or excellence.

00:29This is no song and dance class. It's English.

00:33You're going to take it and all your other academic subjects just as seriously as you take your presumed careers.

00:39You're going to work twice as hard as the other students in this city.

00:43You don't get any breaks because you're talented, or cute, or funny.

00:47So they called me to come and audition, and it was my lunch. I was on a soap opera that day,

00:52and it was my lunch hour, so I had to get a taxi and race over and read,

00:58and race back.

01:01And then they called me back to read with Gene, Anthony Ray,

01:05and it was just amazing.

01:09I mean, we just clicked.

01:12It was just phenomenal.

01:16Yeah, I swear, you send me the welfare, and I'll cut out, and no one will find me.

01:24There must be another way.

01:26Not for me.
