00:00I detest that cacophony.
00:02Cacophony. That's a great word for it.
00:04I'm pleased we finally agree on something.
00:06I find the entire new wave phenomenon mindless and depressing.
00:10I got a telephone call if I wanted to audition for this movie in New York.
00:16It was for Alan Parker, you know, the guy who directed the movie.
00:20And at first I thought it was a joke because by profession I'm a composer.
00:25And I thought it was one of my students being cute.
00:32So I was less than cordial.
00:34And with a German accent you can really be less than cordial.
00:38Anyway, it turned out it was for real and I made some ground rules.
00:44And the most important of the ground rules was that I wanted Mr. Parker to know that I'm not an actor.
00:51I didn't want him to think that I'm going to come in there and pull a fast run.
00:55Tell me the first thing that comes to your mind.
00:57Mr. Rocky?
00:59Why not?
01:08It was a very unusual audition because he was told that I'm not a professional actor.
01:14He didn't do what one usually does in auditions which is give lines to read.
01:19He asked me, he said, I don't know anything about music, but I want to learn, say something about music.
01:31Which is a very unusual way to start.
01:34I loved it because I realized what he was doing.
01:37Here he comes beating his gums.
01:40What's he going to say?
01:42So the first thing I said was, jazz is the glorification of the inexact.
01:50And he said, that's unbelievable.
01:52That's exactly what then we had another chat for about 10, 15 minutes.
01:56And a day later I got the news that I got the job.
02:01I got the job.
02:15That's amazing.
02:18And here is where we came from to talk to me.
02:23We got your best, frankly.
02:25Now, is this good thing?
02:26You got your best?
02:27Can you keep that and I can keep it at the end?
